... I hope it helped .. and didn't bum you out.

.... What's up .. and how have you been ...?

Sooo, it's on the hunt for a new vehicle ..huh.?

Hopefully the focus will work out for Ya on a trade.

Let's do all the positives first, it's and SE, the miles are low for the year, we are knee deep, it has some nice toys and the color works.

Now, let's do some negatives .. it's handshaker and there is ton's of em' on the market. -- But, It sounds like you have taken care of it, so it will "show" nice -- You are going to be in that high $6's low $7's zipcode on a trade.

Down Retail Rd. .. $8,9 in the paper and $7,9/$8,5 will get her done.

In Jan. I bought a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan which I love. However I've had 11 things to wrong (some of them repeatedly) during the 7 months of ownership. Partially I think the repeated problems (a/c, seat belts, etc.) were due to the shoddy service dept. I was going too. I found a great service dept. that fixed *everything* in one day.

I've tried to get it claimed as a lemon but both Honda and the BBB said no go because none were safety defects (actually two were) and everything has now been repaired.

I'm worried what is going to happen once my warranty runs out and the hassle of going to the service dept. every month (plus trying to arrange to use my mother's car...) is getting old. Not to mention that while I love my car, it's fun to drive and the payments are great, I don't have much confidence in it anymore.

So I was given an offer on a new 2002 VW Jetta sedan that is great because they want to get the 2002's off the lot. It's the color I would want, the packages I want, etc. However I am still upside down using the Honda as a trade in ($2000 upside down and I don't have time to sell it privately whih if I did that I would break even) and after taxes, tags, destination charge and so on, the price might be still too high. I have zero money for a down payment as well.

I only have one daughter so I don't have any concerns about out growing the Jetta (or Civic) in years to come. I have heard some questionable things about the Jetta's reliability which I am trying to steer away from not purchase again :)

So, should I keep my Civic EX and hope that after these last repair attempts everything will be fine? Or take the plunge and buy the Jetta? Again, I would love to keep my Civic, great car (I recommend it to everyone who asks me!), great payments, but these problems are really becoming a inconvenience.

    Any advice would be great!

    Thanks,

    Carrie

....... Wow, a extremely looow price for a great vehicle .. this one has no miles, and seems to have the right stuff.

Grab the Vin#, have it run through Audi service, run a Carfax, and IF, this puppy checks out -- Grab it ..!

$20 grand ..? can't get em' and can't find em' on the wholesale side for a price even close too it ... XC's are just super, but what a super price this is ..!

Good luck .. and let us know ..!

Thanks, Terry. I was hoping you'd have time to respond to my post because it seems like you're the expert around here. Do you work at auctions?

Well, I don't part with money easily so I've done research non-stop for the last three days and I've decided to buy the car. I'm a little hesitant about long-term maintenance costs but it's a great car at an incredible price. I'm calling the bank now! :-)

Please let me know trade-in and retail values for my 1997 Maxima GXE, auto, power driver's seat, alarm, cassette, color = sand (aka champagne), interior excellent, exterior a few minor nicks, tires <20k, 75,000 miles, location Minneapolis/St Paul.

I've been trying to sell it myself but haven't had anyone even look at it, despite running newspaper ads for 3 weekends, an ad on the net and posters at wife's & my work. Is the market bad for cars like this at this time? I've sold lots of my cars over the years but never had this much trouble.

    Thanks for your help.

    Terry,
In my search for a nice used Jetta, I stumbled across this at one of my local used lots and I may revise my search for this
    1999 Nissan Maxima SE?
Gold, Alloys, Bose, Moonroof, Auto, 22K miles, Spoiler, No leather
The salesman pulled a price of 17995 off his spec sheet, but I saw his Auto Trader ad which shows a price of $14495. What do you think?

As usual, thanks for your help and time. You and Bill provide a very valuable service, and this actually helps make the shopping process almost fun!!!

Well, are you ready to price a beater?

    97 Dodge Intrepid, Seattle Area
3.5L, Auto, PW, PL, AC, Alpine CD player, Black, Alloy wheels, cloth seats.

    Now the bad news
118,000 miles, small wrinkle in the rear passenger door where my next door neighbor hit me, some paint peeling around the driver door frame, few scratches, small hole in carpet on driver's side, "check engine" light is on, brakes just started squeeking, engine is making a funny smell.

I can handle the truth! What do you think I could get for trade-in, or retail.

BTW, Thank you, you are providing a great service.

It is an automatic 2WD. Its dark green, and I live in Arizona. When I was originally looking for a Blazer a year ago, dealers were selling 2D '95 with over 70K miles on it for around $15K. Around what would the trade-in value be?

yes, it is a 900. I knew that, just force of habit (I do the same thing with Volvos going from 960-S90).

Still, a car for a brave (or foolish) soul.

Bill, my condolences. I had a death in the family in February and know the pain and sadness you must be feeling right now.

Terry, thanks for the brutal truth. I can't start autocrossing the A4 until shes nice and broken in, so I think I'll have to keep the Focus for another month or two and sell privately. Well, at least I already have buyers lined up for some of the aftermarket parts...

I have a 2001 Honda Civic EX/automatic 2-door with 14,000 miles. What is the trade in/private sale value I can expect for the vehicle? It is silver with grey interior. I live in Las Vegas, NV.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys. Although it was my Grandfather's time.

Heck, I doubt I'll make it to 83! And he lived a good life.. really I am pretty cool with it although I will miss him a great deal.

Dave, good to be back, and awesome to hear the Jonah is outta here and the Galant did $4,650 or 4600 or so across the block at Imperial! So no prob. Remind me to leave ya a +fb anyways and I am gonna answer some posts and climb to the top and hit the bar for a well deserved 12 shots of Belvedere :)

Keep the Civic. It will be more reliable than a VW. Historically they are exceptionally reliable and have great resale value.

See what happens for the next few months, but I think you had a hiccup. I would NOT trade ifn it was me.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
OK.. So we have a Stripper here, I assume no roof, no alloys?

This is about a $6K wholesale piece I would think. So assume $8,500 ask, Grab no less than $7,400 (Ideally $8K)
Maybe U ask too much my friend?

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm..

It's got like NO miles for a nearly 4 yr old car.. Good color, you only have to move the little stick in the middle once to go forward... etc..

But no leather on an SE. So that is cause for Bill's "Whip o' deducts"

    Still, 22K? $14,495?

    Step 1: Get checkbook.

Step 2: Offer $14K, if they say "bugger off" Say OK to $14,495.

    Step 3: Write check.

Optional: Skip steps 1-3 and go to your room.

Buy the car. Very good price. Must be aged inventory they wanna blow out.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Not much.

Lotta miles and you have to push little stick back and forth to make it move around. And that thing shakes yer hand like a meat cleaver.

It does have BigMac-fodder-skin covering seats and someone did saw a hole in the roof to leth wind and cigarette butts in tho.

So I think $3K on a push, really upper $2Ks as a trade.

Throw it on eBay for $1.00 on reserve with 20 pics and watch it do $4,500 I bet.

Geez.. sounds like it's front-line-ready. For Beirut auto sales. :(

    Sowwy.

Uhhh... I almost feel like acting like Jack Nicholson in that courtroom scene.

Trade It? $1,500. As a dealer it sounds nasty... Sowwy...

    Like Sutton Place? East 57th?

You should be driving a Bentley. Go see the Millers over on Park ave and buy one. Seriously! :)

Oh yeah, the Honda. The Bentley Trade-In. Well, that or an Aston, right?

    haha.

Car is worth, wholesale, $7,500++ and I bet you can get $10K retail for it. Sell it for a dime under $9,300 and stay in your room till December. Seriously.. sounds like a nice car with no miles, just make sure it isnt all beat up in NYC and all.

    And thanks :)

    Vegas? Joe Pesci?

    I want an Autograph!

No Miles, Right car, right color, just check for casino chips and garter belts before you trade it in.

    :)

It's worth $13K out there I should think, wholesale, $15K retail (So ask $15,700/bo)

    Bill,
Thank you for the info. Sorry about your Grandfather. I know exactly how you feel, because I just lost mine two weeks ago. He was also 83. I will miss him a great deal, but it was his time and I'm thankful for 2 things:
    - He went quickly and didn't suffer very much.
    - I'm 35 and not too many people can say they had their Grandfather around until they are 35.

..... Now is the time to be buying a 4x4 ..

Everyone else is thinkin' Converts, sporty stuff, etc. So the market is down for the next 2/3 months ... Or till a Chiller comes through and folks start thinkin' "Oh yea, now I remember why I drive a SUV" ... l.o.l..

The price seems right on the EB, most dealers will cut em' from the herd for net, net .. I just bought a loaded up 02 Yukon 9K SLT, 4WD, quads, heated leather, slider, Disney pack, etc, etc, $45 on the sticker and $33 at the block.

00 EB 4x4 Expeditions, the ultra nice and ultra low mileage bad boys, are doing around the $22's at the barns, so most dealers will say bye bye to em', at the $24/25ish figure ...

This should at least give you an idea ..

I swore I would never play this card but... I'M ONLY A GIRL!! At least that is the way I am being treated by sales people! I'm trying to trade in a mint condition 2001 Ford Expedition XLT with an original list of $40,205, mileage is 37500. Has all the bells & whistles . I don't think there are any options it doesn't have. It just seems I am getting the serious "low ball" treatment as far as its trade-in value. I've looked up the Edmunds as well as the blue book, and they say it is worth between $23,000 and $25,000 and I'm getting offers between $18,000 and $20,000. Are my expectations realistic?? This is the first time I have traded in a car with any real equity in it (we only owe $13,900) so I feel like they are trying to rip me off! Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    Thanks-

I'm thinking of trading my 99 Blazer LT. It's 2wd, with 39k on it.
    Exterior:
    Clean
Dark Blue, no scratches or dings
Original tires, still have decent tread
    Interior:
    Tan leather
Clean, no stains, rips or tears
    All options except sunroof
    I'm in Texas.

    1. Can you trade in a leased vehicle
    2. If so can you then use that trade in towards the purchase of the new car?

    .... I'm a Dealer, I better do a better job than you .. l.o.l...

Do I feel he can come done in price ..?

That will depend on the price of the vehicle .. go to FAC (Flat [non-permissible content removed] Cost) on the invoice, take away the rebate and minus $800 off the demo cost, that should get you were you need to be,

It's summer, the last thing the dealer wants in his inventory, right now is .. a 4x4 demo with lots of miles --- lets see what that does.

Check it out .. and let us know.

Why don't you just tell me I'm looking a little plump, and dig the knife in deeper! :-) High...ya, I know, but Edmunds and Blue book have you enter the mileage before they give you a trade-in value... and it still came back between $23,000 and $25,000. Thats why I'm here... Help! ...Oh and its a 4x4. Black with Gray interior.
Here is the list of options:

my neighbor just totaled his '97 olds 88 w/ 80+k miles.
i helped him buy a new outback, nice...
anyway, the insurance handed him a check for $8,075.
sounds like the "brick-wall trade-in" is the best way to get $$$ for your old car :-)
