I don't think they will budge on 13,200 though, but it is certified pre-owned BS. I had gotten them down from $15k, which seems to be the minimum asking price for any 2000 jetta around here. I'll be putting 35000 miles a year on it, so the low miles a good. But I'll let Mrs. MPP2 look at both and pick the one she likes.
Ghulet- You are correct. It seems like the new Jetta GL have power locks, and the GLS has power windows as the main upgrade. But most GLS jettas also seem to be sold with the moonroof and alloy wheel option package, and that seems to add to the price quite a bit.
THose old RX Ragtops are all over the place.. but if it is MINT...
$4K wholesale/$5500 retail (Real $$)
The ABBAs... I mean SAABs..
Are both worth right at $10K or so across the block so i'd think they would retail in that $12,995/bo range and $12Kish will buy one. YMMV, of course.
Bill
$13,200 isnt bad, it just isnt a "steal" Still, from a dealer's perspective, you don't exactly have to give clean, low-mile certified Jettas away.
Me? I'd go find a 1995 XJ6
Bill
Cavalier? DOn;t say Cavalier.. I hate those junkers...
He's just a dealer, just like fedtrust.
Bill
The 9-5 is a TON of Bang for the buck. Yeah they have the resale value of Beer (think about that for a sec) but there's always a Hefty bag fullof $50 bills in the trunk too.
So ya buys em 3 yrs old.
Or ya do what Bret did and ya lease one.
Base 9-5s with the light turbo engine are little sweeties. Cheap, quick, good on gas, comfy, etc...
Bill
tsk tsk tsk...
NEED INPUT!
Bill
Now how many miles on it?
Geez... we gotta start sending people back to their rooms!

I have a friend who just sold his 1992 Audi 100. He bought a Volvo 80 from the local Volvo dealer. He said one of the main reasons for not buying another Audi was he had a bear of a time finding anyone to work on it.
ppw = prior paint work?
Glad you're back. Have a good weekend.

I'm in the NY area (obviously from my handle) and was wondering how used Jettas are selling these days. My sister has a White/Beige Leather 2000 Jetta GLS VR6 with automatic, moonroof, Monsoon Stereo, VW CD Changer and 32,000 miles on the odometer. There's a scrape along the bottom rear passenger door that we plan on fixing (from one of the dreaded parking lot concrete poles that jump out of nowhere). So when we're ready to sell the car it will be in excellent condition. Thanks for all the advice.

selling/trading in my car...
I have a 1993 Altima GLE with all the options (leather, spoiler, etc.). It is
a Canadian car and thus is in kilometers but is registered in CA. It has
about 210000km on it but the catch is that the odometer stopped
working at about 193000. unfortunately, the first digit has rolled between
1 and 2 so it could look as though it's actually 293000km.
I'm looking to buy a new car soon, and someone recommended that I
first take it to a CARMAX to get a negotiating point. Am I going to get
penalized because of the odometer? I've heard it's illegal to tamper with
them... Otherwise, the car is in ok shape, I would say it needs some
mechanical work (transmission leak, squeaky brakes).
What should I be expecting? Will US dealers take a Canadian car?
Thanks a lot.
I would have to see this puppy ... take your friends advice, check Carmax and see what they say.
Terry.
Sis has all the right stuff, soon, auto, slider, right color inside and out and it's a V6 .. oh yeah.
On a trade, around the mid $14's figure with the stuff fixed, on Retail Rd., $16,9 in the paper and she will see $15,9/$16,5 ... IF it is "jam-up" and knee deep.
Terry.
I don't have to tell ya, the miles are not going to be your friend here .. if it is clean, sneakers look new, no invasions of the "scary kind" and it looks like it has 30k, then you will be in and around that $6,5 figure or so on a trade ... miles just kill it .. sorry.
Terry.
By the way, if you really want the guys here to give you a number, tell them if its a stick or auto.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
The problem here is , not the lease pay-off .. it's the miles. If your vehicle had like 20/25k, your vehicle could be worth $9,0 or more, depending on the dealer. So the figures are fair .. the driver is just a little off. You may want to just pay the difference .. also there is some Nissan Loyalty programs going on, and this may help you even more if you go into another Nissan or Infiniti. You have some options, so try em' all and see what happens.
Good luck ...
Terry.
If it runs good, cuz' the miles are low for the year, so clean it up, drop it in the paper for $2,900 and you should see $2,5 or so.
A dealer might hit it at $500, or they might hit it at $1,0, it's hard to say, most dealers wouldn't know what to do with it, except wholesale it.
Terry.
Bose ..? HUD ..? Dual roofs..? Wheels ..?
Terry.
[and btw, they ARE all stick - yay!]
Bought an '88 from a post-doc at our school in late '95. 80k miles, blue, decent condition, no rust at all since from Oregon. Agreed on $2400, took it to ahve it inspected. Oooh doggy, comes back with p/s leak, oil leaks on engine etc. etc. $700 to fix. oy vey. Buyer wants to ditch it, new Subie has arrived, okay, he'll eat the $700, i've got myself a deal.
Turns out: the car has manual steering, so there was just a little grease seeping by. the other leaks never amounted to a drop on the floor, and everything else detailed was similarly b/s. Needless to say, I haven't used that shop since...
the mrs. put 35k+ miles on that puppy in less than two years, i sold it for $50 more than i paid... in like a weekend. with a crack through the windshield. and i put maybe $600 into it, halfshaft, exhaust, brake calipers, that sort of thing. i changed my first timing belt on that car, worked slowly and carefully, and still was done in 2 1/2 hours. i'm 6'1" and don't really fit, but anybody under 6' looking for a cheap car should snap that puppy up.
And the dealer won't be trying to "cheat" you if they offer you $400; it's really not worth more to them. VWs are hot with the kiddies, for whatever reason...

Thanks for all of you help!, you guys are great!!
We have a '99 S70 GLT with only 19K miles. The residual value in our lease contract is $18,344. Visited dealer today to look at new S60 models and he said the S70 would go at auction for about $15K. We've seen ads for dealers selling same GLT model with a lot more miles: 49K miles for 18.5K. What to do? Negotiate lower buy price with Volvo finance (based on the dealer's 15K quote) or turn in car and lease a new S60? Is the dealer going to make a killing on our low milage car? Is there any rebate or leverage we would have with a new lease? Thanks for your time!
It sounds like the Dealer is trying to make another sale, which is fine .. that's their job.
But, if it's a Nice, Clean one with No miles, it will do an easy $17,5 at the block.
Try to get Volvo to drop the price, don't talk with the nice folks that answer the phone (and Don't talk with the dealer, they do, but you see how far that has gotten you) , they have like no "horsepower" .. try your luck with a Reg/Dist Lease MGR at Volvo (don't tell em' the miles) .. I also "think", there is some
Volvo Loyalty monies right now.
But if push comes to shove, I would buy it and keep it. Or, through it in the paper after a super, duper, clean and detail for $19,980 and let someone come over and slap Ya silly for $19,5 .. .. 19k ?, Ya can't get em' and Ya can't find em' ...
Hey, good luck .. and let us know.
(As the Tire Turns) l.o.l...
Terry.
So if it's nice and clean and the tires aren't transparent, you should be in and around that $19ish figure on a trade.
Terry.
We have a Xcab, it's a 2WD, small V8, it's a XLT and the miles are lowish for the year, besides you say it's clean.
Want's $16,900 for it .. probably paid "around" $13,5 for it. Did a this and a that, maybe a "Certified" and the pack, would put him at around $14,5 or so .. he needs to make a profit -- $15,5ish should drive it away.
Nice to hear from you again .. Thanx for the compliment.
Terry :-)
On that V70... Terry, do ya think there just might be a chance that the dealer is chokin to have it on his lot?
As far as the S70 goes.. even if you cant get them down from $18,500 or so on the buyout (And I think ya can) I think that you would be *_really_* hard pressed to duplicate that car for that rice assuming it has never seen the inside of a body shop.
I know it's a car I sure as heck would want!
Bill
Thanks for your reply -can't tell you how great it is to have access to your helpful advice! But, being a newbie, I have more questions..
I forgot to mention: we talked to the folks at Volvo finance. They claim that the residual price is not negotiable, and they even have a $150. buyout fee and taxes on top of the residual, bringing the amount of the buyout to
$20,021. The Reg/Dist. Lease manager is at the dealership, but just not a salesperson???
What to say?
Also, the S60 2.4L lease is for $318. (48 mos. auto/cold weather/premium pack./metallic paint) with security and bank fee waived; tax and first month down, cap cost $30,200. Seem like ok deal? Seems like they are trying to unload these, end of year, etc.
As the Volvo Turns...
I appreciate what your saying, Terry. I think the problem I'm having is that the cars I want aren't sitting on the lots for months, I've been to 4 Ford dealerships, 3 in town, one north of town, each visit they may have 2-4 used Expy's on the lot, some w/ high mi, colors I hate or cloth or whatever. I've been to the two Lincoln near me, first one was the one who's trying to jack me for $30,8 on a less than perfect '00 2WD(which I believe was on the lot for about 1 1/2 mo), hopefully the other will prove better, they only had two Sand Navs on the lot, but guy I talked to seemed knowledgeable and mild mannered (hey there's a start) says he used to be a UCM a few hrs away and had to take a job in sales here to get his foot in the door.
The good news, that guy w/ the phat '99 was tryin to sell it for awhile, I just didn't know that's what I wanted yet to look for it. I'll have to keep scannin the net and the paper, and maybe this new guy at Lincoln #2 will come through.
Thanks for the help, really!

Now that we no longer need a tow vehicle, my wife want to trade our Explorer in on a wagon (most likely a Volvo V70). Here's the info
We're in Northern NJ.

Running boards
Privacy Glass
Michelin tires w/ 10k on them

It's got damage to the driver's side rear door that is going to be fixed (just waiting for the check from ins. co). Got a couple of parking lot scratches on the passenger side. Other than that it shines when clean (no more black cars for me..too much work)
I've added a front bug shield and rain guards for the windows. The seats should be immaculate as we've had seat covers on them since we got the truck.
I've had all the recall items taken care of including the tire recall.
Also, I've seen this asked before, but will it help/hurt alot to wait until the fall to trade it in?
Thanks,

We're thinking about trading in our 2001 Lexus RX300 for a luxury sedan. Don't know what make/model yet, but want to find out what it's worth before we start visiting dealers. The details are:

The front right fender and bumper were replaced due to a hit and run accident. Repairs were done at Lexus dealer recommended body shop. Can't tell the difference between the original and repaired parts of car. Other than that, it's in excellent condition and all maintenance was done by the dealer.

It's a 2WD in SFran, a 4WD is more sought after there .. and we have a nice Kiss "fender side", without actually seeing it, I would guess "around" $27/$28 on a trade. Lexus folks are getting to be like BMW folks, they like em' puuurffect.
Terry.
Right now, they are licking their lips for your vehicle, it has noooo miles and it becomes a "Hard to find". I will bet, they have at least 2/3 Salesman that have it pre-sold for $21 or at least have the heavy feelers out.
Volvo has some great lease programs out, as does just about everyone else right now .l.o.l...
What would I do in a situation like this ..? For starters I'm not a big lease fan .. but that's just me. I would buy the 70 out, and sell it outright and check out any lease programs they have on the S80 .. it's tons more vehicle than the 60, and more vehicle than most anything out there across the board, but that's just me.
Good luck .. and let us know.

00 EB 4x4 Expeditions, the ultra nice and ultra low mileage bad boys, are doing around the $22's at the barns, so most dealers will say bye bye to em', at the $24/25ish figure ... This should at least give you an idea .. Terry.

I am going to look at a private seller's
00 Expy EB 4x4
34k mi
Blk/Tan
tow pkg
typical EB stuff, except no roof or disney and I don't know if it has the load leveling suspension
ad states "New Goodyear tires, very well maint. MUST SELL, asking $27,000"
That said, if it is as clean as he says, and it's prvt sale, where does that put me?
Thanks, Karz
That my friend, will depend on the seller .. folks always think their vehicle is worth more than it should be, no matter what the market is doing. They get a little info from here, a little info from there, and the next thing you know is, they will only discount it a few hundred dollars. Also keep in mind, that most people still owe a pretty hefty, big bag of money on their vehicles.
But anyway, I would start em' up at $24 and nicely and patiently work your way up to $25,9 (if you have to) .. make sure your finance is just minutes away .. and something that seems to work alot is - CASH, plain old American Green Backs. Drop $2/$3 at the kitchen table on a bid, most times that seems to work better than a piece of paper they have never seen before, called a check .. alot better.
Private sellers can sometimes be (believe it or not) worse than any dealer you may run into .l.o.l. CASH is a language everyone understands.
Hey, good luck ..
Terry.
The color is ok .. the miles are acceptable but a little on the hi side, if it's a clean one, a 4WD, they probably have around $23ish in it .. and probably won't accept less than $24,5 or so, if it's a 2WD, just shave about $6/$9 off ...
Good luck .. and let us know.
Terry.
