Well, it looks like I got took for a fool in one of my first used car purchases ever. I have been buying used cars for a few years now, but I got hosed on this one. It's a dark blue, 5 speed VW Jetta GLS, with alloys, power everything. Prob is, I paid $11,000 for it, and now it has 88,000 miles on it. It had 81 when I bought it in May. Now, I can't re-sell it for anything. I was offered 7,000 by a dealer, but I think he was going low on me.

Additionally, I have listed it in Autotrader, and received a grand total of ZERO calls in 3 weeks now. What are you guys seeing for this car? What does the crystal ball say?
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Yeow!! Please tell Terry the car is someplace north with long distances between things. And please tell him the car has new tires and brakes and is in perfect condition.

Cuz if not, that car value ain't much. Hopefully Terry will have some semi-good news.

    Fingers are crossed.

hmm... Perhaps I should just ship it up here and use it as my "getter" car... =o) nice A2B ya know? At least I know whats been done to it in the last 3 years... =oP
  • charlotteashcharlotteash Member Posts: 5
now that you mention it. I even had new rotors put on the front and back just because I thought they looked bad. New ones, not reconditioned. Tires have about 7,000 miles on them. Put on new by the scam artist dealer.
I would just figure it to be worth close to payoff because it has the power everything, the sliding roof, the alloys, etc. I gotta unload this joker!!

    I've got a 1997 Maxima GXE:

    - 5 speed manual, cloth seats
    - color is Rosewood (I think that's what they call it, it's a browny maroonish color)
    - no other options ( not even a sunroof, and believe me, it wasn't easy finding one that didn't have one :) )
    - no accidents, single owner
    - hood and one side have mild scratches where my kids did some damage taking their bikes out of the garage, no rust
    - interior is pretty good considering I have kids, some wear on the driver's side floor mats from my big feet
    - I've had zero mechanical problems, engine is clean, brakes have been done, two new tires, other two are probably 50%
    - 38,000 miles (short commute and not used on the weekends or for trips)
    - western Boston suburbs

My wife doesn't like driving the stick, so it may be time for a new car.

Any thoughts on what I could reasonably expect for this? The various sites I've checked are all over the board.

    Thanks,

    -Charlie

..... Hey Charlie, thanks for a real good description. The miles are Low, so you got that going for ya ..

It has just the basic stuff and it has been doing just average things as far as wear and service sounds ok.

Everything was going your way til' I read that handshaker stuff, Ouch .. on a trade, it's somewhere in the mid to high $5's, the dealer "might" stretch to the low $6's to make a real tuff deal.

    sorry .. :-(

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Wa wa wa wa Wow ..! A whole lotta miles going on here - 88 klicks .?

    It's a 00 right .. ? - ooookay.

Nothing is going in your favor here, stiff, stiff, miles .. and it's handshaker, what else is wrong with it .. 245 McDonalds bags in the back seat and 3 tone paint .. Uuuugh.!

I read your post twice, I'm sorry .. I'm guessing the dealer is probably right, there might be a little here or there, but that puppy is going auction side no matter what -- not to give you any false hope, you "may" want to Clean it up and make it look New, I have a feelin', if you shop it around to some other dealers, it might do more towards $8, but that's a guess.

The reason why you can't sell it is, when folks here that kind of miles they get weak, even on a great vehicle like a Jetta, now if it was a 95, you probably could dump it -- by the way, what were you asking for it .?

    good luck .. ;-((

    Hi Terry,

    Thanks for your reply.

I like the car, I don't really want to get rid of it, and now I have a reason I can use. :)

One interesting thing, though - when I bought it, the dealer had two used ones of this model, that were 5 years old, both with 60K+ miles (and manual transmissions). He wanted $14-15K for each, and he was complaining about how low the price was because they had put more money into reconditioning than they wanted, and somehow neglected to raise the price enough to compensate. Yeah, right. :)

Anyway, I took one out for a drive and by the time I got back, there were two other people waiting to buy it if I didn't want it. I passed on the used one and bought a new one for < $20K. Didn't seem smart to get a 5 year old car for 75% of what a new one cost. The next person did buy the car, too.

So I'm a little surprised at how low the amount is, but that's the breaks, I guess.

    Thanks again for your response.

Not to 'add fuel to the fire' here, but how is the dealer a 'scam artist'? You agreed to pay $11k for a two year-old car with 81k miles, why is that the dealer's fault?
  • jasmith52jasmith52 Member Posts: 462
I think 7000 offered from a dealer is a pretty typical deal. Take your $11000 retail, remove 1000 or so for the extra miles and 6 months of depreciation since you have had the car and take off the $3000 or so spread between the retail and trade-in price.

This $4000 loss when trading in would be a typical deal for many used cars bought six months or so ago retail.

This also tells me that you can pretty easily sell it yourself for around $8500. And, if you are willing to clean it up right, wait for the right buyer, and bargain hard maybe you can sell it for $9000 or slightly more.
  • tblazer503tblazer503 Member Posts: 620
    gotta agree w/ ghulet here...
A major factor is also that all used car values got dumped in the tank the last year.

The biggest factor like Terry says is the miles are VERY tall for the year, and I know I get scared at 20k/year, so 40k for me is a no go.
  • visionxpvisionxp Member Posts: 45
i'll try to give you more info about the car im looking for(thats the best i can do right now since i havent bought one yet).

let's say a 93 318is in good condition with good maitenance records( i wouldnt say 110% .. more like 80-90 %), all the popular options for a BMW, around 100k miles (+ or - 10k), OK tires, OK brakes, clean title of course, good paint condition, California car with NO rust , nice looking interior and manual tranny.

again OVERALL car has to be in good condition.

so does that help? can you give me a more accurate estimate on the asking price and the price you actually pay to get the car.

how about a 92 with the same features?

    hope this helps!

    thank you again :-))

... Did I get a good deal from my insurance company?

    The scene:

My wife is driving along minding her own business when the bus full of senior citizens she is driving next to swerves into her lane, side-swiping her on the passenger side. The bus' mirror takes out the the front door, the sliding door, and the rear panel, busting out all three windows to complete the trifecta. (She wasn't seriously hurt, just shaken up a little, none of the old folks were hurt either. It's a good thing the kids weren't in the car, there was glass *everywhere*, it looked like a glass bomb had gone off). The insurance company totalled it out.

    The car:

1995.5 Ford Windstar GL, power everything, privacy glass, rear a/c, cruise, etc. 78,000 miles. Engine was replaced 15,000 miles ago (the infamous anti-freeze in the oil problem), other than that it was a great car (no tranny problems). A fair number of parking lot and garage pole dings in the doors. 4 new tires (95%+). Interior could use a good cleaning but is otherwise on good condition.

    So:

What would a reasonable offer from my insurance company have been?

It seems like everyone in the family is getting a new car (except me!) now my Aunt is on the bandwagon.

She has a 93 Toyota Corolla LE, it has power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, cassette, mirrors, auto, loaded, it even has the Toyota undercoating and rustproofing. All this time everyone thought it was a 98 or a 99, it's very clean inside and out, one small dent about the size of a pop can on the drivers side rear door, that's it, never smoked in and always in her garage. All the service has been done at Toyota, even all the oil changes every 3,500 mi for $34,50 a pop! New tires, brakes and wipers 7k ago by them, then twice a year for a $150 cleaning.

One drawback, it has just turned 100K, we all thought it had like 30k, the Honda dealer said it's worth maybe $1,500 on a trade, can this be true, she's sick about it, she has every service record since she bought it, all 38 of them.

    What say you?

As always thank you, again, when you get up to Philly, we owe you some burgers and beers.

    M.
  • charlotteashcharlotteash Member Posts: 5
for the realistic insight. Unfortunately, I still owe around 11k on the beast, and I have zero to little cash to go with it. So, I have no other alternative but to keep it as long as it takes to sell, at the price I need it to sell at. I have even contemplated Ebay, as things tend to fetch a slightly higher price over there. I have it for sale for $9999, and I have to expect to get that. Firmly.

Again, thanks for the insight, and expect to hear back from me when I finally dump it!!

I gotta ask: why do you feel the need to get rid of it already? Sounds like you just don't like it, but I'm curious.

That Corolla sounds like a perfect retail piece. Dealer doesn't really care about the history/records, since it will probably go right to the auction. I do know from experience that a private buyer will love the documentation. Miles might be a little stiff, but it should still sell easily through the paper.

I guess I bought it thinking I was going to be happy with a used econo-box. I have to say, that I love driving the car. There is absolutely nothing wrong with VW Jetta's. I had the window regs replaced by the great dealer here in Charlotte, different from the one I bought from, but now I just think my family needs a larger car. I unloaded a 2000 Nissan Xterra before getting into the Jetta. I like the car. I really should just keep it, as it is not a burden to keep or maintain. Easy car to do oil changes on too.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Jeez, I'd think there would be a ready market for that little car. Lots and lots and lots of people are looking for well-maintained, adult owned cars just like that one.

I'd be scouring the local paper and Auto Trader to get an idea of what they're selling for. Then put in one of Terry's famous 5-liner ads and wait for the phone to ring. Betcha it'll sell in a heartbeat.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... At least you are smart enough to have it priced right .. $9,9 is a fair asking price, but I feel $8,9 would get it done ..

I hope your Ad doesn't read FIRM, that's the quickest, fastest way Not to get calls -- no matter what, I wish you well ..

..... Yep, everyone is right on this one .. except the Honda dealer.

Don't let Auntie sweat it .. if it's as clean as you say it is, it's gotta be worth $2,5 in the dark on a trade.

Me personally, I wouldn't waste the effort on a trade, that puppy would be going down Retail rd. - make it super clean (Oooop's already is) nice, big Fat 5 liner in the paper for $4,5, all 38 service records sitting on the front seat, open up the garage door for $3,5/$4,0 -- drop it on their head for anything less ..l.o.l... this won't last a weekend, so I won't say good luck.

$34.50 for an oil change, her Toyota dealer must looove her.

..... Aaaaah, another insurance scam .. huh.?

The miles are low for the year, it's a GL and it has the dual stuff. Based on market conditions, barometric pressure and the alignment with Pluto, I'm thinkin' it might not do much more than $4ish -- but, if you have the same insurance co. as Peachtree, it might see $8,600 wow ..! I'm still scratching my head over that one ..

    But anyway, good luck ......

---- Visionxp, did you read the post I dropped for you .? #9301

That would be in by the frozen food dept, across the aisle from the mayo and mustard side ..

    __________________________________________________________________

Let's just say, all this comes true, the 92 is doing in the tall $4's at the block, so down Retail Rd., someone can ask $6,9, maybe more. The 318, is doing the strong $5's so on the retail side, $7,9 could be a good asking price.

This is based on a pretty "stand tall" vehicles, with miles like 95/110k. Just keep in mind, they Ain't cheap to fix, ya better have a Tech in Your pocket, cuz' he will be getting into it. :-)

    I hope this helps ...

    Unfortunately, I don't have peachtree's insurance company.

My insurance company gave me $5000 ($5600 'value' minus $600 in 'existing damage', I guess they meant the dings in the doors or something).

    So I guess I did alright. :)

    Thanks again.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Your welcome - I gotta start changing Insurance co's .. between you and Peachtree, I'm getting robbed .!

You did real good, it's a $2,500 van on a trade .. maybe. And on the retail side, maybe it "might" bring down $4 .. yep, you did good.!

Could anyone tell me what a 1999 Acura RL with 20,000 miles in exc condition go for in auction?

    Many thanks, Dave
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ... Good morning Dave ..

It sounds like it could be a nice one, if it has no paint work, no parking lot kisses and no interior warfare .. then it should do the high $21's, maybe the low $22's depending on the color and if it has a Nav system and if it's a "baby doll" ... a lot of if's going on here.l.o.l.

    Terry.
  • namroknamrok Member Posts: 18
I have a deposit on this car from a local Acura dealer. The price is $26000 Certified. It sounds like I have room to negotiate it lower. What do you think? No navigation system. My other option is a 2002 Infiniti I35 with 20K in mint conditionfor $22K. I'm concerned about the gas mileage I should expect from the RL vs the I35. Any thoughts on this?

    Many thanks, Dave
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Let's take a close look here .. let's say they paid $22 even at the block, auction fee will run around $250, transport (depending on where it's coming from) $150, lets do a little service in the shop- $250, lets put a detail on it $125, lets drop the warranty on it for $800, lets add a $400 pack .. so by this time, he's lookin at "around" $23,8 for a real cost.

You can always negotiate something, but this puppy has nooo miles and clean RL's are hard to find, so start him up at $25 and see what happens, but I wouldn't loose it.

In my stupid, humble opinion, I would take an RL waaay over a Maxima .. eerrr, Oooop's, I meant a Infiniti I30 - 20k on a vehicle that is less than 1 year old .?

    Terry.
  • namroknamrok Member Posts: 18
    Terry,

Many thanks for the insight. I negotiated a price of $26500 with the addition of 2 extra years warranty bumper to bumper, taking the warranty out to about 44 months. They just got the car and seemed to be unwilling to drop too low so quicklyas it has such low mileage.

    Thanks, D

You helped me about 6 months ago with the value of my Odyssey. Unfortunately, I didn't sell it then so I've put it back on the market to try again.

It's a 1998 Odyssey EX with 56,000 miles. It's a silvery gold color with a beige interior. 6 passenger, sunroof, alloys, tinted windows, all that EX stuff and the tires only have 2-3k on them. I used touch up paint on the few minor chips on the hood and the rest of the exterior is perfect. Seriously! Plus the interior is perfect, too. The guy who is selling it for me said it was in showroom condition. :-)

Now, we've got it priced at $14,895 and have only gotten a couple of calls over the past week and a half. Is this a good price? Am I being impatient thinking that someone should want to hurry and buy this van at that price? Thanks for any info you can provide!!

Terry, & or anyone else here:

Another oddball question: I've owned an '88 BMW M6 for about 10 years. Black/tan, always garaged, no winters, about 67K now, beautiful paint, some road rash on front air dam, 1 small nick in interior leather, not absolutely perfect but gorgeous. Very well maintained w/all records. Needs at least $1K in suspension work.

Anyway a couple of months ago I got into one of my periodic snits about schlepping the car/paying for repairs etc. & threw an ad into a national enthusiast mag asking $17,500 or b.o., figuring maybe I'd get no responses at all. But for a couple of weeks now I'm getting almost frantic calls & e-mails from all over the country about the car. One local guy seems almost desperate to pay $16.5K.

So I'm thinking I priced it too low--should have started higher--should have thought the whole thing out more thoroughly in advance. I love the car, but am not sure how many more years I can "keep it up"--the care & feeding of a 14 y.o. German auto. And now I'm schlepping it 60 miles away & renting a car every time I take it for repairs. One up-side to keeping it: The '88 M6 may be the most "collectible" & scarcest of all BMW 6-Series.

Any advice? (I know this is kind of an odd question for this board). Thanks!

  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Whats that old saying???? "$17,500 in the hand is worth $19,500 in the bush"?? Something like that.

You've got real people with real money who really want to buy your real car. If you really want to sell it, and this wasn't some ego-driven exercise in self gratification, then I say take the money and RUN!!!!

You may think there are more buyers who will pay more money, and you may be right. Or you may be wrong. But one thing's for sure, if you rerun this car at a higher price you will have blown off all the "real buyers" who are scorching your phone lines now. So, other than Mr. Maybe-He's-Real-And-maybe-He's-Not M6 buyer, who will really buy your car???

Sell it now and don't get greedy. It ain't worth $2000 or whatever. Good luck with whatever you decide.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ...... Bretfraz, you go boy .! ..l.o.l. ..

I gotta agree with Bretfraz on this one .. your M6 sounds reeeally nice, ultra loooow miles and from your wonderful description - *not absolutely perfect but gorgeous* - .. you do "feel" this vehicle.!

These are wonderful drivers, super expensive but nice. They do have a kinda "cult" type following and they still bring ALL the money .. but, it's only worth what one will pay for it and that might be now, 9 months or 2 Easters from now.

The tuff thing is, trying to find a cult member who has "Rock hard Cash" (American money) .. lot's of folks may call and look, but $20 Large is lot's of Jingle for the Vast majority too pull out of the "Hip National Bank" for a 14 year old set of wheels, he may want to, but his wife might stab his eyeballs out. l.o.l.

I'm not saying to sell it, just to sell it - but if it's time to go on, then get her done, have you tried to Ebay it .? $16,500 is a fair price, not a great price, but a fair one for both. And who knows, he may move another $500+.

Personally I would feel more comfortable with a little more, who wouldn't .. but then again, I'm from the old school - I'm a firm believer in getting what you can upfront .. then fight for the rest.

It's your keys and your decision ..

    Terry :-)

Serious, you have a great way with words, and if you can do the same thing verbally that you do with the written word, it would be great to listen to.

    Hi Terry,
I'm considering trading in the following:

    - 02 Acura RSX Type S
    - 200 HP Type-S motor
    - Satin Silver/Ebony leather interior
    - 21,100 miles
    - Immaculate condition

The car is two new and no figures on edmunds or KBB. What kind of money would I get on trade-in.

    Thanks!

.... Beth, I remember you .. you are the good lookin' babe up in MN with the 75 year old Mom right .?

Ok, down to business .. the vehicle sounds "jam-up", it's the right color, deep in rubber, it's a EX and the miles are low for the year.

The question is, where do you have it advertised and who is selling it for you .. the price is right $14,8 (remember that show?) .l.o.l....

Sometimes when a dealer or a private party goes to sell a vehicle, the market goes quiet, it may be quiet for a day, a week or sometimes even a month, no reason it just does .. it's common.

Be patient, don't be greedy and never use the word Firm in an ad, it's a instant negative. If the caller ask's "are you negotiable?" .. yes, everything in life is negotiable, it's a beautiful vehicle, but we do have to sell it -then stop- and go on to another topic, NEVER negotiate anything on the phone-Zip. But, if someone has $13,7/$14,0 cash money when they get there, then that's a whole different ball game ..

    let me know ...

    Terry :-)

Great advice from both re: my '88M6, thank you!

Terry, I have to ask; as you were thinking $16,500 was lowish & I agree: If you were going to price the car, what would you ask, & where would you hope to end up? Don't want to be greedy, but I do want to get "all the money" for this car if I sell; it's been my pride & joy for 9 years. (I've looked at all the prices I can find in the Roundel, E-Bay, etc. etc.--quite a large range).

BTW, my local $16.5 guy is up to $16.9, & another guy just called from out of state, sounded like he'd pay the $17.5 no problem if he likes the pics, etc. And of course I'm under no pressure, can easily put the car away until Spring & "regroup"--I doubt it will be worth less then.

Speaking of that, do you think this car might ever APPreciate? Of course I'd have to keep feeding it expensive parts in the meantime.

    Thanks again!

..... Hey Woody, this is a tuffy ... can the vehicle appreciate.?

Can Byrd make a 25ft putt on the 15th for the Buick open ..? Will Toms cough it up on the 18th ...?

So what's all this mean .. there is always a chance that a certain vehicle can or might do more money, yours is a limited build. If I remember right, they dropped 2,000.?

There is 3 prices when you sell a vehicle, an Asking, a Liking and a Taking price.

If this was me, I would be lookin' for a $18,9 "asking price" - would "like" to see $18,0, but I would "take" $17,5 in a heartbeat in a quick CASH sale.

None of the books really reflect the real value of this machine, so you are gonna hafta depend on the "cult" peoples knowledge, also my biggest problem with this "type" of vehicle would be, the little nice lady at the supermarket who put's a $800 scratch on my door and drops the value by $2/$3,000 for the real deal buyer.

..... It sounds nice, it would have to be, it only has 3,500 miles.

Why are you tradin' it ..? it's new...!

Anyway you are going to be around that $31ish figure on a trade .. it's black and 2WD in Texas - no help there ...

    I hope this helps ...

...... Ok, we have a 01 with 15,5 klicks, got some help there .. it's an auto, that's a huge help, a 4WD that's big bonus points and a few blow darts have hit it - ok gotcha.

If you have kept it clean, no funny stuff growing in the back seat, no strange odors coming from the glove box, nothing looks back, when You look in the storage compartments .. then on a trade you should be in and around the $14's on a trade ..

Good luck and let me know ...

Have you researched exotic/antique/classic car auctions? Maybe not Barrett-Jackson level but there are lots of auctions nationwide and sometimes these are the best places to sell a car like yours for top dollar. At the right auction there could be dozens of potential buyers.

Check out http://www.sportscarmarket.com . It's the uncontested bible of the collector car marketplace. I was a subscriber for several years and learned a ton about the classic car auction world.

..... Thanks for the compliment ..

Where's this Benz from ..? It sounds like a nice one, the miles are fine, it's a non-smoker, no kisses and it's got lot's of stuff ..

Let's hope it's a Yankee vehicle, cuz it's black -- on a trade, in and around the $58/$59,0 figure, "might" see $60 if it's puuuurrrfect and depending on the dealer .. If they decide to go down Retail Rd. drop a nice Ad for $72,9 and let the paper boy snatch it for $67/$69,9 ...

    Maybe this helps ...

    Hi Tery,

I will be going for the RL, but I want to know if I am getting fair trade in $$. I am trading in a 1992 Acura Integra 4DR GS w 95K miles, black with leather, sunroof, stereo casette, A/C, clean condition except for
    1. passenger seatbelt (motorized) needs repair, estimated around $300.
    2. CV joints making slight noise. Est around $400 to fix.

    Is $2400 trade n fair?
