I'm looking on trading in my 2002 TB LS 4x4 for a 2003 Envoy SLE 4x4 because if all the problems I've had with the TB.
My question is, did they fix and of the electrical problems in the 2002 triplets? Are the 2003 models more reliable? Any thoughts and or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

well this is it, my formal complaint has gone to chevy. The dealer said he can't fix my vibration problem , because there is no fix!!!! They were nice about it, and said they would try! Oh Well! 2003 tb ls, 3K In shop 5 times for same problem amonst others, thats 5 times more than my Nissan has ever gone in with 94K!

Thanks for the advice. I still haven't decided on the grille--with or without the cutout. There are some good pictures on the links that John sent maybe that will help me decide.
    Thanks again Envoyeur.

Is the vibration that you are experiencing really that bad? I'm guessing it's inherent to the spring based rear suspension. Probably some sort of resonance through the metal. From what I understand from others though, is that it's just a slight vibration felt in the gas pedal though?
  • ficussficuss Member Posts: 541
Has anyone checked the possibility that the tire tread pattern may be the cause of this vibration problem. People have rotated the tires, but no one has replaced the tires with a different brand or tread pattern. It could also be small differences in tire pressure, causing the tires to rotate at slightly different speeds causing a hetrodyning sound which is being felt in the gas pedal as a vibration. My Ford Econoline van has a similar feel if I am at a speed at which I am not pushing it very hard and am going up a slight incline in overdrive. Giving it a little more gas will cause the vibration or sound to diminish.

Ok, every once in a while I put in my two cents here to let others who are looking at buying a triplet know that they aren't all bad. I'm now at 11K on my '02 Envoy and am not having any of the problems that keep coming up here. My only complaint is my wife drives it all the time and I don't get to as much as I would like.

I do have a question for any who might know something about the wiring. I added a DVD and mounted the player under the back seat in the middle. Works great and the kids (very spoiled) love it! My problem is, I haven't been able to find a good place to wire it that is switched. Everything I've tested is live even with the ignition off. All the power outlets are always live. I don't like taking the chance that the DVD gets left on and the battery gets run down.

I know some of you have done some major modifications to your sound systems. Any assistance would me much appreciated.

  • cmack4cmack4 Member Posts: 302
Why not just install an inline switch somewhere between the dvd player and the live wire? That way you only really have to turn it on when you want to use it versus every time the car turns on? I would personally use the live wire for the accessory outlet in the console. IIRC the black plastic on the inside unscrews and you should have easy access to it after that's removed. You could also easily drill out a tiny hole in the console to mount the switch.

Well the vibe is felt in the steering, gas pedal, and a loud humming THMMMM THMMMM noise in the Cab! once again ITS NOT THE TIRES, WHEN YOU LET GO/ TAKE FOOT OFF OF GAS AT 0 to 125 mph you have no vibration what so ever!!!!!!!!!!! This is the at least the 10th time someone has stated that!
  • 2yearleaseonly2yearleaseonly Member Posts: 107
The springs have been replaced and the tires have been balanced and still the vibration. The dealer is putting in a device that will monitor the frequency of the vibration and report to GMC what the number is. From that, they MAY, and I mean MAY be able to tell the source of the problem. Than GMC will give authorization to swap parts. Supposedly GMC says they have never heard any complaint regarding the "VIBRATING PEDAL". I am losing my optimism that they will be able to find the source. Thank god its a 2 year lease and unlike a marriage, will be painless to split up at the end. I wish someone here on this board was able to get theirs fixed so they could impart their wisdom. The only thing I hear on this board is the dealer telling them to suck it up and deal with it. My dealer is already laying the groundwork for this eventual conversation.

Paul, I had the same problem. I was hoping somebody would explain how the radio and lights were wired so that the BCM controls them. I did figure out where to get power from after reading a project on installing a radar detector. What works is using circuit 29, its labeled "rain". It seems to be directly switched and not controlled by the BCM computer, so it turns on and off with the ignition switch. Highly recommend using the "Add-A-Circuit" by Littelfuse. Should cost you under $10.

aldan93: Have you figured out if it happens at a particular speed and rpm and gear combination yet? The sound you describe does not sound like a vibration. It sounds like what I described as hetrodyning. When two or more frequencies very close to each other in frequency are present, you will hear or in this case feel the thmmm thmmm. It is the difference between the frequencies that you feel or hear. I cannot say for sure this is the problem, but I would investigate it none the less. I mentioned the tire pressure simply because if the tires are not inflated to the same pressure, they will spin at a slightly different speed. The difference in the speed of the tires can cause this thmmmm thmmmm. If you only feel it in your fingertips and foot, it certainly is not shaking the car enough to be considered a vibration. Next, I would ask the dealer to replace the tires with a different brand with a smoother tread. The tires on my TB are basically mud/snow tires. They weren't designed for a quiet ride, but instead traction. They are noisier than most tires.

OK, the mechanic did state that this vibration problem is very common, and stated that it is in fact a frequency issue, GM has not figured it out yet, since spring replacement works on like 75% of problem vehicles, again if you let go of the gas, tires are fine!!. OK if you roll the car off a steep cliff NO VIBRATION! Tires are fine! Well anyway, I I'll wait to see what they will do after Chevy calls me back! After that it is BBB, and then ? 6 months I'll get rid of it!

I checked for my 2000 Impala LS majorgaurd warranty and they were $400 less than my home dealer
    http://www.capperautocenter.com/

I decided not to get it because we only put about 3,000 miles on the Impala every year. It is 3 years old with 7,800. I am going to take the chance.

    Thanks for the tip rpl13026!

I must have checked at least half a dozed other fuses in that area and found all were hot. Naturally, at that point I assumed everything was hot. Actually, now I have found a couple of others that like #29 are only hot when ignition is turned on. #29 is the best choice since I don't have the rain sense wipers anyway.

Cmack4, thanks for your suggestion too. The DVD already has a wireless IR remote control so I really wouldn't of gained much with adding an inline switch. I still would have worried about the wife and/or kids leaving it on.

The whole setup works great. I also have the power sunroof so I do get partial blockage of my rearview mirror. Cost me less than $300 for the player and 6.8" screen. Added bonus - the DVD player also plays MP3's! I'm using an FM sound feeder so I can play it through the BOSE. Sweet!

I just bought a 4 year/48,000 mile/$100.00 deductible extended warrantee through my dealer from GE. It was $1800.00 with 10% down and $90.00 per month for 18 months. No tax and 0% interest.

    Smfran,
Am I missing something, or is that really just a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty? 3 year/36,000 miles is standard.

    I meant 48mo./100,000 miles.

We looked at installing a DVD for the kids to watch movies in the Envoy. We decided to buy them both individual portable DVD players. They have 7" screens, work on DC or AC or have a 3 hour battery. Each son now can watch his own movie with no fighting over what to watch. Each son has his screen right on his lap in front of him. Each son has headphones and can plug into the acc outlet if we are driving more than the battery will last. Added bonus in that we can move them from car to car as well as use in motels and with relatives who don't have them when we visit. They were $350 each and we couldn't be happier. This solution was a lot more practical than adding a system to just the Envoy. With all the electrical goofiness, I wouldn't want to take a chance on adding any extra electronics.
  • pauleulpauleul Member Posts: 116
rainers - be happy to send you some info on the DVD. Would you like some pictures too?

hardhawk - and I thought my kids were spoiled! I also considered a portable unit. The ones I liked and allowed wider angle viewing were up there in price. Did you get the mintek? That one was around the price you paid and has the 7" screen. Pretty nice picture too, but I didn't like how sensitive it was to vibration and being bumped. I also didn't like the thought of the player getting tossed around, the screen getting messed up and the ease of theft.

Next I'm going to set up Gamecube with the wireless controllers. Then I'm riding in the back and playing with the kids while the wife drives. Sure am glad I never grew up - just wish the body had followed with that same thought.

Actually I got Audiovox Portables. They were the widescreen models and have a nice picture. The kids love them. At ages 5 & 8, the peace we get make the price of admission worth it. Two portables were also about the same or less than a single installed system.

rainers - I'll get some info and pictures off to you sometime this week.

hardhawk - mine are 4 and 10 but haven't yet figured out how to fight much. Lucky me.

Well, I went ahe4ad and did it this weekend, I traded in my 02 TB LS. I ended up getting a 2003 Envoy SLE. I have to say, the engine is MUCH smoother and quieter (especially when cold) then the TB. My TB sounded like a diesel engine with piston slap when cold... Although, I am led to believe that has to do with the way the TB was broken in... I purchased the car with 400 miles, and I believe it was abused during the break in process... The brake rotors were even warped when I picked it up.. And the engine just never sounded right...
I have to say though, I am very disappointed with the no power mirrors thing.. That's a pretty serious thing to leave out. They could have at least made them manualy adjustable instead or power. It's just really inconvenient. Has anyone here added power mirrors, and if they did, how much did they cost. Thanks!

Has anyone seen one of these installed on a TB/Envoy/Bravada? Site says the 49 inch version fits the triplets, but I'd like to see what it looks like:

After reading all these people with all these problems. I ordered my TB 2 weeks ago, but since then, I keep on reading about about 1000 problems with this truck. I am still going ahead with the buy as I have already ordered, but if I had to redo it, I don't think I would go for the TB. I feel like I am getting a FORD! Lets hope Chev is quick in fixing some of these problems before mine comes out of the factory...

All Envoys should have power mirrors as standard equipment. Take another look for the switch.
  • 2yearleaseonly2yearleaseonly Member Posts: 107
Nix the search asked for by 4156 and save your time. The switch aint there becuace in a scheme to lower the sticker price in 2003 they deleted this as a standard feature. It is now available as a package or as an option by itself in the SLE model. I know because I test drove a stripped SLE and was dumfounded when I went to adjust the side mirrors. Sorry paulyjsob you had to find this out BEFORE you bought the Envoy.
  • pauleulpauleul Member Posts: 116
richlavoie - I know it sounds bad here, but be assured there are many of us who aren't having any problems. It's just that we don't keep posting over and over to counter those that do. And no I'm not knocking those with problems. I'd be making just as much noise as you guys if I were having your problems.

You can get power mirrors as an option by themselves. It is code DK2 and cost $133 MSRP. Or you can get them in a package for about $1,450. Only the SLE model doesn't come standard with power mirrors. Probably cost at least a couple of hundred to have a dealer install. Maybe more if the wiring isn't already there.

To get a URL to show up as a link you have to enclose it in the following tags:

    <a href="http://www.edmunds.com">Description of link</a>

which will show up like this:

    Description of link

    tidester, host
  • scottc454scottc454 Member Posts: 356
Or just type in the URL, making sure to put in the http://

    as in http://www.edmunds.com

No href's or HTML knowledge needed. It makes the link automatically.

Now can I have a job here if I end up unemployed in the next couple months?

I asked my dealer when I bought the envoy and he said I can't get the power mirrors without the 1SB package... If anyone could tell me for sure, I'd appreciate it.. Then I go back and have another word with him...maybe they'll let me get them for the $133. Thanks!

This will be the third time in the past two weeks that we will be off to the shop again. We have a bouncing noise after going over a bump soat first they thought it was something rubbing under the front driverside so they re-routed some lines and sent me home well it didn't stop the noise now the 4awd light is out and the noise is still there. So today I took a ride withthe tech. and he thought it was the shocks and told me he would fix the gear switch which is a problem on the 02 TB. Ok go to pick it up today and the gear switch is fixed but the noise is still there so it goes in Tuesday at night for the first thing Weds. morning. I have to ask is anyone else having this problem and do we have a fix . Today they replaced the shocks and toqured everything but still this bumping noise. It seems to be only after you hit a bump that you hear it like the tire is still bouncing. Any info is helpful thanks guys. I am not a crazy woman either just crazy about my truck
  • cebtebcebteb Member Posts: 138
Check your spare tire mounting to ensure it complies with the detailed description for proper mounting as provided in the owner's manual.
  • anjin_navanjin_nav Member Posts: 18
Are you sure the noise is coming from the rear of the truck? I know of a lot of folks who thought the same thing as you and found out the hood was a little loose in the latch. The dealer can grease the latch to reduce any kinds of squeaks, but they can also adjust the hood bumper heights to help tighten the hood against the latch.

I could be wrong, of course, but it's a lot easier to get the simple things fixed than more complicated ones like suspension adjustments.

    Good luck!

It is unbelieveable that a vehicle in this price range would lack power mirrors as standard equipment. What is GM thinking? Buyers must really be on their toes these days.
  • paulyjsobpaulyjsob Member Posts: 48
You are right about the mirrors... I didn't even notice they weren't there till I picked it up.. It's just not something you look for... you expect them to be there on a $32K vehicle. Anyway, they're an extra $133 and they can be added as long as you have the rear defroster (which, go figure... is also optional).. Thanks for all the info guys.. I'm off to the dealer today to have them added.
  • momstruck1momstruck1 Member Posts: 206
not in the rear of the truck it is in the front driverside . it seems to be a thudding sound like I am still going over a bump after I have already driven over it. I am going in later this afternoon to see if they can fix it Wends. I was wondering after three times in the shop for the samething isn't that enough for the lemon law if they still can't get it right?? I mean I have three kids under 10 in that truck and this noise sounding like the tire is making me a little nervous to put my kids in this truck . Any thoughts??I love the truck but I want it fixed.

When I bought 03 Yukon last December, the F and I guy noticed I traded in a 02 Envoy. He inquired why the trade with such a new Envoy (bought it in March, 02). I told him there were few reasons, the Yukon had 0% financing for five years, the Envoy was not heavy enough to qualify for the section 179 depreciation and that there were numerous problems and annoyances with the Envoy. The F and I guy said he had just bought a 03 Envoy; he then went on for a good five minutes about having a $30,000 vehicle and not having power windows!

I do have to say that with all the problems I had with the Envoy, my dealership did everything they could do to accommodate me. They fixed the sagging headliner, misaligned body parts, bad paint spots (took possession at night), the transmission and put the gasket on the license plate panel. The wandering mirrors started occurring just before I traded it. The seats and the small gas tank were the most annoying thing and not fixable. I could not get comfortable with the seats no matter what position the ten way adjustment was set and since the backs had little or no side bolsters, on every turn I was sliding side to side. Two little things in life that I feel is a waste of time, getting my haircut once a month and filling my gas tank once a week but filling the gas tank every three or four days is ridiculous!

I am happy as duck with the Yukon. I am getting 14.1 mpg with the Yukon and was only getting 14.4 mpg with the Envoy (according to the DIC&#146;s) and for insurance for the Yukon, I am actually paying two dollars less. I am not saying the Yukon is without problems as there has been a couple. I am sure (or hope) the 03 Envoys have less problems.

The key issue here is it is up to an arbitrator to determine whether the condition that has not been corrected in the allotted time/mileage does in fact decrease the value, safe operation or drive ability of the vehicle, to actually award a repurchase. As a former GM employee I sat through quite a few of these hearings and the outcome is quite unpredictable at times. But I can tell you at the 3rd repair attempt if the factory is notified by the dealer of the potential lemon case because of the repeated repair attempts, by franchise agreement they can be held financially responsible for the outcome.
  • dshepherd3dshepherd3 Member Posts: 194
Should read if the factory is >not< notified.

The dealership thinks I am a dumb blond woman who knows nothing today I took it for a ride with the head of the service department and he was talking to me about his vacation to disney world!!!SO I have to hear that he thinks it is safe to drive and it is just the shocks being a little loud. I am also told that the car is getting a little older and it is going to make noise . HELLO it is only a little over 7 months old! Well I am going to wait for the dealership I usually deal with to open up again and go there because I am getting no where fast with this dealership. By the way after this 3 year lease is up I have to say it is back top a mini-van and off to toyota or honda to get it . This is two strikes for Chevy . For all of you who don't know I had a Venture with major problems before the Trailblazer.

I couldn&#146;t believe that GM forces people to spend extra $1400 on SLE Enhanced package to get power mirrors. I decided to skip this package and install power mirrors myself. I picked up power mirrors with a turn signal on EBAY for $120 and power mirror switch on GMPARTSDIRECT for $14. I hooked them up and everything works great (including heat and turn signals). Power mirror switch comes in different colors, mine was pewter GM part# 15065242. The worst part was cutting a hole for the switch so it fited nicely on the door panel.
I also installed Gentex rear view mirror to have outside temperature display. I picked it up at brandsmall.com for $179 minus $10 online coupon. I was hoping to find a harness for this mirror (it is the same as the original minus on-star buttons) but it was not there and I ended up pulling cables to have it connected.

Interesting factiod about the dealer having to notify the factory. Do you think it's better for a consumer just to skip arbitration and get a lemon lawyer and start court prep?

btw, you have 30 minutes to edit your posts - look for the Edit button next to the message title next time you want to fix something :-)
