farmer52: I was told that 92% goes to Japan. Now if so little goes directly to the main land (USA) why did Diesel take a $.15 cent increase the day after BP said they were shutting down 2/3 of the production? I think this points to how greedy these oil CEO's and their companies are. May these Ceo's be plagued with fuel problems in their own vehicles!!!!!
When the TransAlaska Pipeline was authorized, all the oil was earmarked for the US. The export ban was lifted in '95 due to an oil glut - the West Coast refineries couldn't handle all of it.
The most recent figures I've seen is that from 4 to 7% of North Slope oil is exported (to Japan, Korea and China mostly). Here's one story from '05 - link. (Seattle Times)
IMHO, the total global oil supply is limited, both as to the total quantity and the amount that can be pumped per day (the latter is far more important at the moment). Even if the US is mostly buying oil from the 48 states and certain nearby countries (Mexico and Venezuela), the same oil could be sent elsewhere and global market is such that our price depends on what other countries are willing to pay. Sure, the oil companies are greedy (like all for-profit companies) but they aren't the entire reason we see these price spikes. Speculators who buy future contracts on oil have probably contributed $5 to $10 of the per barrel price we see right now.
Speculators who buy future contracts on oil have probably contributed $5 to $10 of the per barrel price we see right now.
Possibly but they react to what's happening in the real world. Both geopolitical tensions and inadequate refining capacity in the U.S. strongly impact oil and gasoline prices.
 Hello, I purchased a 06 CRD Limited, It has a February 4th, 06 build date. It had been in the shop at the dealership for at least a quarter of its very short life. Automatic shutdown system kills engine when the brake is applied. First time at 2200 miles, dealership replaced fuse and relay. In shop for 5 days that time. Second time it happened was two days after we got it from the shop. Dealership replaced EGR valve and also stripped out oil pan plug as a bonus. (The oil change was supposed to be a freebie for all of my hassles-instead it cost me another trip to correct the oil leak) This time it spent 20 days in the shop, but the loaner (o5 liberty gasser)was better than the first (01 dodge neon). The 05 was a very thirsty unit and not as quick as the 06 CRD. This evening, at 3300 miles, the third episode has started, applied brake at slow speed and CRD shuts off. All 3 episodes start when brake is applied at a slow speed 10 mph. The only difference is that I could restart the engine this time, the check engine light is on. It got me home this time, last 2 times I was stopped dead and could not restart it. Monday it will be in the dealers shop again, hope to get another loaner. Overall I am very happy with my CRD, when it runs, it runs very well. It locks at 64 mph at 1800 rpm. I'm getting 23 mpg avg mostly hwy driving. Any thoughts or suggestions/advice please help. Thanks
Our '05 CRD Liberty had similar stalling problems due to a fuel solinoid intermittant short. Never did get any feed back where it was located when they replaced it, but no more stall outs. They did say it wrote a code. Some thing to consider or communicate to the dealer maybe.
Seems like some people are up to speed with eurekaboy about intake flows. Can't get my cheap thin air filters (purolator made in the US) anymore at O'reilly's. Nobody seems to mention the true surface area on the backside of the filter with the loss by the metal webbing required for reinforcement.
This got me back to aem cone filters and the strength of a round shape versus the flat air filter-is anybody using the aem and if so how to keep from sucking hot air from the backside of the radiator forward into the intake.
Thanks for looking. I went to the site again and read the article about plastic, steel, aluminum tubes and heat absorption (and remembered reading a post about putting insulation around the airbox) and the article stated the tube material material didn't matter. I was thinking about adapting the standard conical to the airbox hole, shield from radiator/engine heat, cut the guts out of a standard filter leaving the foam edge for the seal of the airbox lid. I didn't want to waste time if someone already thought it out.
Secondly, I remember caribou1 post about the deformation of the plastic tubes by overtightening? the hose clamps. The airbox tube hose clamp by the ps reservoir is deformed. Too loose suck unfiltered air, too tight deforms, another fine line. Probably should've found the torque setting in the shop manual.
Oil change was unremarkable including dependably seized drain plug. Measured oil (6.4 qts) to see if dip stick is inaccurate as per some earlier posts - full mark appears to be dead on.
Second air filter was not very dirty compared to the original air filter that was almost black. Probably turbo hoses are staying sealed.
4th fuel filter drain produced no water, but there was a smattering if black specks and flakes in the drain fuel. Factory fuel filter was hand tight like it was supposed to be. Used new gasket from new filter drain fitting with old drain fitting that has a water sensor. Also there appears to be a place on the drain fitting to attach a small hose and the fitting acts as a mini funnel to catch fuel/water that is drained from the filter separator. Threads on the fitting have a flat spot to allow liquid to flow when the fitting is just loosened. May try that instead of a funnel next time.
Attached a clear plastic hose to the bleeder screw on top of the fuel filter assembly and pumped the plunger until fuel came out of the fuel filter. When the engine was started it kept running instead of needing a second prime. Pretty basic stuff, really.
Be sure they check the wiring harness itself. The computer kept showing bad parts on my 05 CRD which we knew were okay. The tech jiggled the harness and discovered a short in it somewhere - he wound up replacing the harness, not an easy job, but with over 500 miles on the vehicle since, I think he found the real problem.
DC proposes the Bluetec technology and Toyota has it's "D-CAT" meaning "Diesel-Clean Advanced Technology". The "D-CAT" engine produces 177 HP from a 2.2 Liter engine.
We were 4 adults + cargo over the weekend and I compared the driving efficiency of the Toyota Corolla Verso to that of the Liberty CRD. Both vehicles are very similar in size. Acceleration is clearly more powerful above 50 mph and constant up to much more than 85, our speed limit. But there is nothing under the pedal below 2000 rpm even in 2nd gear, and engine braking is desperately absent. Once again I think the 2.8L 4 cylinder does a great job with it's automatic tranny when the ECU stops conflicting with other accessories. Let's hope DC will not be forced to choose a smaller engine because mountain driving will become a nightmare. BTW, it was already snowing at 9000 feet altitude and there was no loss of power! Mileage was similar to that of the new Jeep specs. Instant mileage during acceleration blocks the readout at 99.9 Liters/100 KM
Forgot something. Developed a ticky lifter running Mobil 1 5W40 (6k miles). The tick seems to be gone using Rotella T 5W40. May just be the new clean oil and not the brand? :shades:
Siberia, mine has been ticking since a long time and I'm reaching the 50,000 miles mark. I think this is due to rocker design and we should not worry. I also noticed the ticking almost dissapears just after putting new oil in the engine and reappears later. I use Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 now and never need to refill between changes.
Nice article from one of my favorite publications, AutoWeek, on diesels planned for the US market. It's an older article, but the part at the bottom about BMW, Nissan and Honda is worth noting.
Well my check engine light came on yesterday with about 200 miles left to make it home. Just had the torque converter, front pump and trans coolers replace two weeks ago. I pulled over and checked everything but nothing seemed out of place. Engine seemed to run normal so I drove the rest of the way home. Started it about two hours later and the light was out. Made a appointment for weds with the dealership. Does this sound like the EGR problem ???
Thanks for the link. Forgot about AutoWeek. Think we are going to the Texas State Fair for the Silverado introduction - your link got me to what be our Christmas present-even if I have to shrink my workbench to fit it in.
JC, How did your trans work turnout? Mine is still in the shop for the same thing after 35 days. Now they tell me they are replacing the radiator and it will be friday. At this rate they will replace everything on the vehicle - I forgot what the thing even looks like!
new2diesel: May I have some input, that I am very sure you may have already thought. However just incase it might have slipped by you. I get the real direct feeling the dealer that has your car is a bubble off. Surely the radiator can't be bad? This seems to be a way of keeping you away from the dealership. How many miles do you have on this CRD? Have you gone and see the radiator yourself? Just maybe or perhaps: 1. They dropped the CRD off the rack. 2.They are using it for a demo for customers. 3. They are using it as a loaner or rental? 4. While on a test drive it got in an accident and was totalled? 5. It got parked on the used car lot and a new salesman sold it? 6. It was parked in the back so long with the keys in it and someone actually got it running and soled it, and they have not found out it's gone yet. 7. It was parked next to the dumpster, and there was a fire in the dumpster, which spread into the CRD which had a window open and the CRD caught fire, and there is not much left. 8. It was sent to the auto auction by mistake. 9. It was sold for scrap at 47 cents a pound. 10. The Tec parked on the rack and the service manager thinks the tec is still working on it, but the tec has found a neat place to sleep and get paid for it. After the radiator the third member is next. Who knows maybe the tec can keep doing this another 7 days? Finally new2diesel, are you sure you are calling the right dealer that has your CRD? Maybe the dealer that had it at first had it towed to some other dealer? New2diesel, you have the patients of JOB! Your story needs to be put in Readers Digest! Could you please tell us the name of this 5 Star Dealer? PLEASE (remember no phone numbers)
Did you look for yourself. Have you seen the report on the tranny repair at lost and possible heat issue. Also of interest was a reply about warranty time-remember my old post from going to flat rate forum for our fords-can not duplicate-why do I want to work on your vehicle for hours, buy my own insurance and tools and get paid for twenty minutes and then have the wife ask how come the paycheck is so small-looks like dcx has really joined Ford (and GM?) in destroying the professional dealership mechanic.
Even if you have not been looking and thinking for yourself, please pray that everyone who wants out of the crd will be offered an escape (like merchantibilty that I have posted twice now).
See if they can replace the body, drivetrain, and VIN while they're at it... you might want to specify which body, drivetrain and VIN to use as replacements so you don't end up with that awful J--P Compass "thing".
yes it is doing fine so far ..." about 200 miles "....just one problem that is driving my crazier than i already am....when i check the transmission fluid "cold" it is showing to be just a lil' bit too much "above the 2nd hole", then when i check it hot and it does not seem to have moved up the stick any "maybe even a lil' lower on the stick..so it is showing a little too much fluid cold, but not nearly enough hot !! any ideas anyone ?? how far do ya need to drive before checking it hot ?? i drove about 8-20 miles the 5 or 6 times i've checked it...
tired old dave: After a good length of time pondering the issue of DCX making some (good jester) some effort to reach out to us "test market" buyers. The only way to get the attention needed to attract DCX to respond is going to be a difficult task. This would have to be highly organized, and done in such a way so others who have CRD's that don't use this web site will be exposed to this movement to seek DCX to give some kind of rebate or recompense. There would have to be a web site or snail mail address that would collect the owners name address, and VIN. This would take some very serious advertisement to get the word out. Then consider the fact that altogether 11,000 CRD's were made for the USA in 05 and 06. If you could get at least 1/2 of these owners to say they feel they were part of a "test market" and had they known that was what they were, they would not have bought the CRD. This is at least a 12 month project. The distribution of this information is a huge problem, and unless some paper or TV network picked up on this story to make this a very public issue, there is just a minor chance CDX would make any effort in the buyers direction. There are always those who get excited and all worked up, and when push comes to shove they chicken out, and then you stand all alone. I know because I have dome a few small protests a long time ago and it did not turn out as well as I had hoped. In all honesty the only thing I can see that might have a better impact would be if everyone just on this forum would call 1800 992 1997 and on #5 give the person the reason why you are not happy. if only 10% of the 11,000 owners called this would at least make someone take note. Dave, perhaps going a few months might be a good thing for you. You could establish with time your CRD is not up to par.
FArout, I like your sense of humor! The dealership said they bumped the radiator while they were working on it so they are replacing it. Actually this dealership is pretty good by comparison. The main holdup has been DCX with parts. The only upside with all this is that the longer they keep the car the better my case is against them for settlement. Of course the dealer that I promised the car on trade to isn't very happy right now! All I can say is I hope no one else has to go through this - but I am pretty sure some of you will. I have no conficence in these vehicles - especially for off road vehicles. There is a better than average chance these CRD's will dump you in the middle of nowhere if you take them off road. As I said before - good idea poor execution.
So far so good I got the vehicle back on August 10th. Just a week before towing a 2400 lbs trailer 765 miles to WV and back. Trans performed well even on those steep grades of up to 9% for 13 miles. I did notice that when it goes into overdrive at ~60 it goes right in. It used to slip in and engine rpm would increase ~200 rpm until it locked up. So it looks like they fixed it and put in updated parts per the TSB. Mileage appears to have improved also I was surprised to get 21.05 and 20.36 while towing this thru very mountainous terrain.
I'm taking it in tonight for the CEL which has now gone out. It went on around the 565 mile mark.
Good luck with yours !!! I hope they are paying your rental !!!
I just got back from the dealer, and replacing the solenoid did not fix my problem. In fact, they replaced a transmission valve which they say also includes replacing the solenoid. They also did a reprogram of the body control module, based on a recall notice that I received. I drove it about 10 miles after leaving the dealership, and the problem happened again. I took it back and this time went on a drive with the technician with the diagnostic computer plugged in. We came up with a more accurate description of the problem...... If you have to drive anywhere near 50 mph for an extended period, it "drops a gear." At this point, the transmission goes into "limp in mode," which apparently means that the system detects a problem and goes into a simple operating mode at a lower gear that allows you to limp into the dealer to get it fixed. This is what I described as "failure to shift into overdrive." If you turn off the ignition and start over, the limp in mode clears, and the transmission works normally unless you get stuck at 50 mph. If you start out and accelerate normally to 55 and above, everything works fine, as long as you don't drop back down to 50 and stay there. So I am going to "limp back in" tomorrow and leave it for who knows how long until they figure out what is going on. They are going to give me a loaner, and gave me a coupon for a free oil change for wasting most of the day today.
lightkernel: As I read your post, what came to mind was just a thought. I believe there is a temperature control, that if the transmission gets to hot it will not allow it to shift into 5th lockup. The opposite is also true if it's too cold, until the trans. warms up it won't shift up. Perhaps others might have a better idea. Hope this helps.
new2diesel: Perhaps what you thought was humor, was in fact things that just might have happened. I am really astounded that this dealership has gotten away with these excuses. I would think the zone rep. would have interviened by now! I always hate to extend my good experience with this CRD, in fear it might back fire on me. But, we have found it to be reliable and holds up well on on our testing grounds of a road. We do not drive it any different than the first 3.7 Liberty we had. Both seem about the same, except the mpg, which the CRD is way ahead of the 3.7 L. With the added 230 lbs or more makes the ride a hole lot more comfortable. I understand how it is when you have made up your mind that this is not going to please me no matter what. I have been there a few times my self. I hope this ends on Friday as you say, they owe you that and more!
Farout... Have you seen the Nitro, it looks like the libby. I wish that they put the 2.8 vm motori in it ,not the 3.0 that the GC will have. I love my 2.8 engine it have that get up and go, it remind me a 6 cylinder for van that i used to own. The problem with the CRD is parts I wish that I could buy the parts at any parts store, but that is the story with all the euro cars. Well let me know how you like the Nitro....... I love it......
nescosmo: I am glad you like the Nitro. What you see is somewhat like the Liberty of 08 will look like. The longer length. As for the grill I can't remember if the picture at Mikes Totally Free Jeep News showed that or not. But, the 3.8 that is in the 07 Wrangler will also be in the Liberty and the Nitro in 08. There are a bunch of new DCX engines called the Phoenix engines that will be coming out and replacing what we have now. We had a 3.7 Liberty for 8 months in 05, and the engine sucked fuel, had modest pick up. I was very uphappy with 14 to 17mpg, and most of the MPG were in the 16 mpg range. That's why we bought the CRD. The week after we got our CRD diesel prices went way up over the gas prices. The prices of diesel have remained higher than gasoline from that point until today. This is a first that diesel has remained higher that gasoline. However even with higher fuel prices we are keeping diesel costs to .114 cents per mile. Which is still less per mile than our 3.7 would be getting at even 18 mpg. I doubt you will see a diesel in a Nitro or a Liberty for a long time to come if ever. To put a diesel in now because of the cost increases of diesel engine that are legal with the 2007 Federal emissions, who would be willing to pay in the $34.000 range for a Sport CRD? Just wait until the GC CRD with the MB Bluetec comes out, I won't be supprised if the price starts in the $38,000 range. The thing I think about is the bigger a vehicle gets the more weight it luggs around, the more fuel it uses. I expect the window sticker of the nitro to be the same as the Dakota is with the 3.7 . The added maybe 6 inches is not enough for me to think about trading in. I really don't plan on changing vehicles unless it's for some unforsen thing.
Am I the only one who does not believe this tale of woe? Several aspects of the story make little sense, including the report that the dealer who took the trade is waiting for the vehicle to be repaired, the whole litany of vehicle failures, etc.
that doesn't leave me much to look forward to !! thanks for the info. tho....i took mine back to the tech today and he added some fluid & told me not to worry about what the transmission stick read cold just make sure its close "hot"...of course when i got home it was still a little low so i'm adding about 6 oz. at a time till i get it in the "holes" hot !! i have drove mine around for about 200 miles sinse the solenoid was replaced and it is doing fine so far, no interstate driving yet tho...but i have hit 50-70 mph alot....i hope they get yours fixed quick....keep us posted, thanks.....
Got a price on the fuel filter for the crd.$61.00,the part guy was surprised someone asked for it.Don't think you'll see these anywhere else but the dealer. If the CRD engine is like a lot of diesels keeping the water out and a good clean filter always helps.I don't know how finicky the common rail engine is with regards to fuel.Does anyone know where to get more info on this engine? The little I do know is that they are well known in Europe and are a proven design.I'll cruise around the web myself for info, cheers all...
Looks like you copied something from Microsoft Word and the quotes or something didn't translate well. You could try pasting into NotePad first and that should strip the codes out.
Hope you're staying dry up there; can't believe the cabins floating down the Little Su.
vtdog: Same thing happened to me. I was negotiating a buy back while the CRD was in the shop. The service manager said they still had to fix it no matter the outcome of the buy back. Sure enough----a short 4 weeks later they had fixed it.
vtdog: I try not to judge ones honesty, by the problems a person has. There are circumstances that seem so unbelievable you would bet money it is not true. But quite often these unbelievable stories turn out to be very factual, which I believe is the case of new2diesel. I am of the opinion that trusting a dealer such as new2diesel has done, can leave a person holding on to the rope they have around his neck, and then someone pulls it and leaving a man to hang. Most people want to trust dealerships, but dealers such as he has, leaves a bad taste for all dealers doing a good job. I say new2diesel is trust worthy. We should not publicly bring someone up to the complete forum, to challenge their integrity.
vtdog: You mean to tell me that your CRD did not come with an Alien Swatter? Mine is hung just above the "Pull for Ejection" handle located in front of the shift lever. I am always careful not to push "Afterburner" button near the window switches. I am assuming you bought the Outer Space Sport CRD like I did. Hows your CRD working for ya? I am pretty content with ours. But when ever I brag, that's when if something is going to go out it proberly will.
The CRD kickboxed all the way up the BW parkway every time I cycled across 55 mph or 65 mph despite my ebullience in an earlier post that TSB 18-023-06 resolved the tranny shudder. So, at 500 miles after this lamo TSB, the tranny learned its way back to award winning meadow muffin tossing. When I can go for an entire oil change without shuddering I'll post as much to this forum. I apologize for the false hope.

Things get worse when you have to buy the Euro...
Heating oil in comparison is 3.65 USD per gallon.

Hope you're staying dry up there; can't believe the cabins floating down the Little Su.
I am guessing that the BCM recall is for 06 models only. Now that it's done the thing chimes at me when I do U-turns.
