Terry, (& or anyone) if you get a chance; I'm going to look at a:

2001 M3 WBSBL934X1JR12061 Titanium silver/black, 6,800 miles, H/K sound, single CD, 6-spd, heated seats, cold weather pkg, factory alarm, excellent condition inside & out, $38,500.

I don't know anything more about the car than that, yet, except I do sort of know the people selling it, & I think it might be an estate sale type situation. Assuming the car checks out 100%, what would be a great price for me to buy the car at? "I don't really need it, shouldn't buy it, etc." so not sure how long I'd keep it. My other choice is a used Honda S2000 (I realize, an odd pairing of vehicles to consider).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Keep in mind that there were a lot of engine failures on the early build current-generation M3s. If this one hasn't had its engine replaced, it's very possible that it hasn't had the opportunity to (too low mileage). I'd verify the status of any BMW warranties or service campaigns to be sure that any low-mileage failure is covered.

..... In the land of Wayne Huizinga .. we have a 95 Tahoe LT, it's a 2wd, the miles are low for the year, we have the no-sale green thing going on with the tan guts, we have a tow pack, boards ..

If, the paint isn't all burned off, no love bug invasions, the leather doesn't have that Jack the Ripper look, cold breeze and the service is 110% .. then trade side, you should be seeing the mid/tall $3's, maybe the low low $4's depending on the dealer ... the miles save this one ........ :)

    ==================================

Thanks again Terry. Our first offer from a dealer was $17,7 and 15 flat and because I had posted here and you told me that we would see low to mid 15's maybe could get dealer to wander toward 16 we decided to tell the dealer we would think it over on the weekend and call on monday. So I shopped the offer and found that the first dealer didn't want my business all that bad. I know in the grand scheme of things it is only $600 difference but to me it is. I really appreciate what you do and it was such a HUGE help for us. I am not very good at negotiation and this is the first car (this will be the 6th car I have owned) we got a decent deal on and I have you to thank for that. So even if you don't get updates all the time, know that you provide valuable info to us poor folk that don't understand the car business.

Terry - thanks for all the help in the past ensuring that my deals were fair to both parties. Unfortunately, I need to buy a Cayenne today or at latest Friday morning and my option list is making locating the vehicle next to impossible. My local dealer located one in Dallas but it is the "manager's car" so it has 1600 miles on it. I'm praying that these "manager's cars" are not abused like loaners - what do you think?

Anyway sticker is 76,600 and they said they'd do 69,500 delivered to Houston which is where I need to get a car. He said they've only been discounting new '05 Cayenne S's $2K off sticker so this is a "great deal". What do you think a fair number would be for both sides - i.e. I want to say "look, if I were trading this in to you guys you would only be offering $XX,XXX"

    2005 Cayenne S 4.5liter
    Silver w/ light gray guts

    Air Suspension
    CD changer
    Soft Leather
    Park Assist
    Comfort pkg - yada-yada-yada
    20" rims
assuming showroom condition - they haven't said otherwise

    1600 miles in Dallas/Houston TX

thanks for any quick response & Happy Holidays!

    >>>Want to see best time to trade this in.<<<

    Take your pick:
    1) Now. It will not increase in value in the next 12-24 months.
    2) Never. These things depreciate like month-old tuna casserole. You've already taken the largest depreciation hit, any further depreciation is "cheap" compared to what you've already been through.

Just a repost --- anybody have a real world trade in value?

    Hey Terry -

Thinking about trading in and your efforts would be appreciated.

I have a 2002 Passat GLS 1.8T Auto in Orlando, FL
It is an automatic with 21,000 miles with Sunroof, leather, monsoon, and homelink. It is anthracite blue and needs no body or mechanical repair. Dealer performs all maintenance routinely and all parts are original (brakes, tires etc.)

Minor scratches from daily driving but otherwise a very clean car.

    Thanks again.

Hello! I was told my Juice in the Subaru Impreza Outback Sport / TS board that someone here by the name of Terry would be able to figure out spot on what the real world trade in value of my vehicle is? :-) Anyone else is welcome to help too of course.

Location Palatine, IL (Northwest Suburb of Chicago)

2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Sport Wagon

    Engine 2.5 165 hp boxer 4

    Driveline AWD

    Mileage 53500

Exterior color silver with beige bumpers and door strip things (whatever they're called)

Alloy Wheels, Sony CD Player with steering wheel audio controls added on, Viper car alarm with Remote Start (550 ESP I believe) Arm rest air filtration system carpeted floor mats rubber floor mats (yes I have both) roof rack automatic dimming mirror with compass, mudflaps and I think that's it for options.

Exterior paint is in good condition. A couple of chips on front that haven't rusted (thank you wax) have touch up paint to touch up before trade in. There's a red blotch of paint on the driver's door (can probably buff out) and some paint missing from the plastic beige door thing (should be able to touch up) There's no dings or dents that I've noticed.

Interior looks like new. I've been very anal about keeping it nice on the inside.

Tires are Yokohama AS430s and were new in August

All maintenance up to 40k miles was done at a Subaru dealer. After that point we've maintained it ourselves.

Now for prior damage . . . :-) The car was purchased in June of 2001 (Subaru released the '02s early). In January of 2002 (with 12k miles on the odometer) I was run onto a median on I-94 which caused 12,000 worth of damage to the car. Insurance picked up the tab and repaired the car. Most of the suspension was replaced and the car was completely repainted in the original silver/beige colors. It was done with all genuine Subaru Parts. Looking at the car right now you wouldn't know it was in an accident.

Carfax also does NOT show this accident despite there being a major police write up and tickets issued (to the other guy) as well as a massive insurance claim.

So with all that being said, what can I expect for trade in value if I was to trade it in a few months from now.

Oookay .. In the land of the 2 criminals on the same football time ....

We have a 03 325i with 14,000 short miles, color is good for the area, we have some HK, we have the butt warmers, we have the blinders, we even have some of the Prem/sport pack and the auto .... you know the drill, no paint, no Popeyes, no curb burners, if so .. then trade side, the dealer probably paid the mid/high $23ish figure, lets say $24 just for the grins and glory, lets do a little CPO action $1,200, lets fix a this and that $200, lets fix that rip in the back seat that no one saw on trade $200, probably $400 pack ... dealer "might" could "maybe have" $26 at the table in it ..... $29,900 .? thats a good asking price .. but I have a feeling that $27,9ish will get it home, maybe less with "tumbleweed time" starting to settle in .......... ;)

    3.0 Liter V6
    Mileage: 59,000
Color: Black w/black top / Grey Leather
Options: AM/FM/Cassette/CD (6) Changer Audio system; Traction Control
    Condition:
Exterior: shiny paint, no dings on sides, a few small blemishes on front (very small). Tires have about 15,000 miles on them.. look like new.. Brakes are good... no noise.
Interior: Mostly driver seat with normal wear; usually only driver in car; non smoker; a small blemish on left side of driver seat in leather where pants pocket button hits when getting in. Overall interior is in excellent condition.
Maintenance: maintained by dealer every 5,000 miles.
Car was in a minor accident last year. Hit on left side behind driver door. Repaired by Dealer Body shop. Looks like new.

Car drives great and is has been taken care of. Garage parked. Need to know what a realistic trade in value is: Edmunds TMV=$16,979; Intelliprice=$12-926-14,865; KBB Good Condition=$12,230; KBB Excellent Condition=$13,075.. quite a wide range!!! What is real here? Thanks, Otownman

               ==============================

It's an 01 - it's black and black (in Florida.?) 60k, SLE, garaged, it's been serviced, we have a minor meteorite hit to the door ... if it's super clean, no swirlomatic car washes, no split seats, door work shows -0-, if the vehicle drives/looks/feels like 25k .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $13's, could "maybe" see the tall $13's if everything goes your way with the right alignment with Mars and Jupiter and it needs -0- .. if it needs stuff, start deducting .... color and the miles are not your friend ........ :)

    ........ Penn State fans.? ...

We have an 02 325ci, it's an El' Coupe', we have 29k short miles, we have that funny move it around thing between the seats, color combo is fine, we have the cheapo interior (do you wear Leatherette shoes.?) we have the Prem pack, slider, bun warmers, all in all, probably not a bad vehicle ..... if the we have no paintwork and the service is from yesterday .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $19's, low/mid $20ish figure, might get a brave dealer to march/stagger/struggle to reach close to that $21 figure, but I have a feeling that $20,0 would just about kill it .... no leather and the handshaker should hold this one back ...... :)

Let me know what happens ....

    ........ Penn State fans.? ...

Well, we don't have anyone else close.

Thanks for the info. I am curious though...

Why is the stick a detriment in a car like this? Once when it was in for service they gave me a loaner with an automatic and I hated it. Since this is the coupe I would think most who appreciate driving would want the stick.

    2002 Honda Accord Special Edition
    4-dr sedan
    4 cyl
    Auto trans
    35K
    Black ext / grey interior
Alloy wheels, factory roof, single CD, PW/PDL/cruise
Condition - good, would look alot better with a proper detail. Some light scratches on the edge of the trunk, easily buffed out. Otherwise dirty but not damaged. Smoked in though.
Brakes - rotors shake very lightly on hard stops, tires, about 40%, only maintenence done is oil changes every 4K
    No damage or wrecks

This is a model Honda made out of Accord LX models; they basically added the alloy wheels & roof to make it a little nicer than the LX. I think this was a factory version though as I've seen lots of them around in many areas.

Drives great, just needs a good cleaning. Thanks Terry - keep up the good work!

    Fair enough.

Is that true of all makes? The auto and the stick are the same cost in the new corvettes. I can't imagine a corvette with an automatic, but that is me. I guess nobody is going to make a purchase decision on that vehicle based on what resale will be, but will it be a factor?

Lots of folks consider resale when buying new. Remember that Terry's primary concern is buying and selling these things and sticks don't move like autos. But Terry also says buy and drive what you like.

I have co-workers that scratch their heads when I say I want to go back to driving a stick and use the resale arguement with me. I'm of the thought of why should I pay $1000-1200 extra for a feature I'll hate for 5 years just to get back $4-500 on the back end.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
Good point... if you stick to 5 years.
Buddy of mine was offered $15,5 on an '03 CRV EX 5sp and was told the stick is a $1,500 hit.

The cost for the auto is usually $800-1200.

And robr is right... Terry's stick is turning and burning, not "fun to drive" or "new vs used"... those decisions you still have to make for yourself.

3" on the ground and counting... mounted snows last night, just under the wire....

Happy Thanksgiving, and happy trails if you're traveling!

Mathias - I could see a CRV taking that kind of hit with a stick. But what I'm looking at new: Legacy, Passat, V50 I think would do better. The slush boxes in those are all around $1200.

I got my snows on about 10 days ago - during the 4" snowfall we got!! Nothing like putting on snows in the snow.

I asked about my 02 Saturn SL 5 speed 48K, a month or so ago. bowke said to ask 4500 and take 38-42. terry said to ask 5900. 02 SL1 and 2's are all over the lots for 6-8K, most with lower mileage and more options, so I thought mid 5's would be a good place to start if I got mine in top shape.

So I got new tires and front brakes, cleaned it up and put an ad in the paper. Five days went by without a call. Not wanting to make this a project, I lowered the price to 4900. Within a few days I got two calls, one came to look at it and two days later he bought it, at my asking price.

From prior expereince I think I got a little lucky here in selling it this quickly without hassle, but one buyer is all it takes. Im hoping to make better choices so as not to be in this situation - I could be in CCBA but I dont like to brag. Anyway, this board is much appreciated and entertaining too, keep up the good work.
