    I have a 2000 bmw 528i wagon, as follows:

    black w/ tan interior
Premium Pack (leather, S/R, power everything, 16" alloys)
    auto trans.
    CD changer
    22K miles, all dealer service
Exterior: one 1 inch "Dimple" on the front of the hood, paint is intact. Front air dam has 1 verticle crack. One 3" scrape on the left rear lower plastic panel. (The car has a very nice appearance overall; & no accidents).
Interior: never smoked in, no kids, very nice condition.
tires about 50%; I have an unused set I could have installed.
    CPO warranty thru 11/05
    clean carfax

What is this worth, in trade, or private sale? I'm thinking of selling within a few months while it still has some warranty left. It's been a great car, virtually no problems, but I'm getting slightly nervous as the warranty runs down, & thinking of getting something Japanese (used RX330, or MDX??). And if anyone has any thoughts on the sanity of selling this nice low-mileage bmw, would be welcome. Thanks in advance!

I have a 95 Geo Metro Sedan with 165,000 miles on it. I've had to replace the front brakes at 115k and the standard transmission at 136k. Other than tires and oil the only other thing that has been replaced is the serpentine belt. A thousand dollars in repairs, total. I am going to have to replace the front axles soon, the CV joints are about shot.

I would definitely get it repaired and continue to drive it. I still get between 35 and 40 mpg. I've found that mid-grade gas gives me the best milage and is actually more economical.

My daughter is 10 and we are already planning on it being her first car. We'll have to trick it out, some, of course. : )

    Hello

I curious as to what real world market value, both dealer and private seller, my current car has. My lease is up in Feb' 05 and I am way under in my miles and trying to make my mind up as what to do with my car.

    Details:
    NYC
    2002 BMW 525i sport
    4 door
    2.5L- 184 hp
    5-speed auto w/ steptronic
    23K
    Sterling gray/ gray leather
    Premium Pkg
    Sport Pkg
    Xenon
    Cold Weather Pkg
    Interior Excellent
Exterior- only thing above normal W&T- quarter size dent in hood that will require repair by a body shop
    Brakes- >50%
Tires- 25%, but need replacing-too noisy
    All scheduled maintenance by BMW

The right passenger window( broken) and door (small dent)were damaged by a break in. Repairs made by my BMW dealer

The car has had one warranty claim to replace part of the LCD readout in the dash.

My cap cost on the car was $41+k w/ buy out just under $28k.

    Thanks for your analysis.

    Terry,

Well, I need to do a favor for my folks and help them unload the old family sled.... and I need your help pinning a value on it.

We are in sunny (almost cold) Southern California
    (93010)
He's the second owner of a 1996 Mercury Sable LS Wagon
    It's got:
    24v 3.0 litre V6
    Automatic, A/C, PDL, P/S, P/B, All electric
    122500 miles
    3rd seat
    AM/FM Cassette
    Cruise
Leather trim only - not full seating surface - the seats and doors are mostly cloth.
    Red with Tan interior
Sneakers fairly new 8 to 9/32 on them
    All maintenance records
    Alloy wheels
Alarm and keyless entry w/ 2 remotes

Here are the negatives. Interior looks a little tired. May clean up with thorough detailing - but no tears, no Taliban shoot outs, no FF invasions. Just looks like a Ford with 125K....

Also - the right side was scratched heavily by some branches and some clumsy parkers a few years ago. He had it repaired by some kids who spoke English as a second (or third) language. They sprayed everywhere and carefully avoided any surface prep work -- so it looks straight ( never was bent) but poorly painted with a little bit of over spray spots (and the scratches show through).

What should I ask on the local Park 'n Sell lot to move it briskly but not leave money on the table??

KBB shows Private Party at $2900 and Trade In at $1500 for Fair condition, but I take those numbers with a grain or two of salt.....

    I appreciate it! Thank you!

OK, so maybe buying an almost new X3 with stick is not the best idea... :)

What do you think about this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cate- - gory=6008&item=4508628489&rd=1

I haven't seen the car yet, but the price does seem right and I can easily live with small scratches and chips :)

Now, onto my car.... What can I reasonably expect (trade-in or private sale)?

    '98 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro
    5 speed,
    Silver with black cloth interior,
    Sport package,
    Trip computer,
    Blose w/ cd changer,
    120K miles,
Bunch of little scars here and there, clunks in the suspension (can someone tell me why Audi can't design control arms that last more than 20-30K miles????? - AAAAAHHHHHH!).
I have someone who wants to buy it, but don't know what to tell him - $$$-wise).
My guess is ~$4-5K, but who knows???
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Around here, Midwest: That is a $1500 car in specified condition if the A/C doesn't work, $1900 if it does work. These are retail cash buyer dollars. It is a Ford with 125K on it.

I would not even worry about the park and sell lot. Give it a good detail, finish any maintenance (get a safety inspection report while you are at it), put maintenance records on the front seat, find some parent looking for a first car for a teenager, take cash money and walk away. It is a relatively big, relatively safe, and mostly slow first driver.

The better it looks and the more you can build the value of the maintenance and mechanical condition of the car, the slightly more cash money it will bring.

IMHO I think that KBB trade in value for higher mileage and older cars is usually closer to the actual private party retail value rather than the value they give for private party retail.
  • fensterlipsfensterlips Member Posts: 28
Thanks dkuhajda. I suspect you're right about the West Coast too. Only the kids wanting the first car need to be held at gunpoint in handcuffs to get them to drive a Ford Wagon. Out here they want something smaller on a rice diet. Naturally that depends who is paying the bills......but they'll take an '86 Honda anything over a '96 Ford or worse yet Mercury.

The Park 'n Sell lot gets a lot of poorer (think spanish speaking) people looking for wheels. I was afraid that putting a sign in the window would drag me into a 4 week sales cycle ( not to mention forcing me to drive it everywhere to be seen)

    Terry,

I have signed all paperwork to trade my LC in on an 05 acura mdx touring. I pick it up this saturday. I got the acura for invoice + 350 + approx 950 for side steps, body side mouldings, cargo tray and weather mats. I got 22,500 for the LC like you thought (and IN is a tax difference state and usually a state of confusion)

    Thanks,

    Terry,

Just a question- was considering a 2001 540i this weekend, and dealer offered me 14K on my car (Chicago)-

2000 Lexus GS400 (V8) Platinum Package w/60K miles- Loaded, black/black, Nakamichi, immaculate, no dings, fully dealer serviced, all records, no paintwork or accidents, back seats like new (no one's ever sat back there), etc.

I looked online and no one's asking for < 22K on such a car (as a seller), and Edmunds/KBB says trade is >20K. After walking out, dealer now calling me back today to talk. What's my car worth on trade? THANKS!
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
A car like that would do well if the owner puts a good clear and easy to read sign in the windshield and parks it in full view at the high school basketball games for the parents to see.

Another good spot is to drive it to WalMart and make sure it is parked where the most people will see it on the drive into the lot. Especially on the Friday afternoon of payday or on Saturday.

I seem to recall someone selling a minivan with a go-zillion miles on it by simply keeping the sign in it when they went shopping at WalMart a while back.

The Park 'n Sell might be an easier way to go, less the commission and fees you have to pay to them.

Those are good ideas. Not sure about the school thing, but we have our Wal Marts, Home Depots and Targets to park in front of....

    I'll try that.

The Park 'n Sell is run by a used car dealer who figured out how to get the county to let him use the Park N Ride lot next to the freeway on the weekend as a place to showcase cars. He (only) charges $45 the first weekend (Friday eve to Sunday 5:00pm) and then a sliding scale if you need to bring it back. Most of the iron that moves well are the transpo and beaters but he gets 100 cars a weekend of all kinds. Great business! No bank business, inventory worries, etc. Wish I'd been connected into that deal.

One small scratch on rear bumper, probably easily airbrushed by lot fairy. One small door dent (Quarter Size), easily pdr'd.
80% tires, good brakes and everything else.

Thinking about giving it to the stealership in return for a new 05 Pathy. How bad will my head be taken off.

Real nice car for $21.6K. Has all the stuff I wish my 5 had. Of course it has no warranty:-( But with a stick (no auto trans. to worry about failing), & the 6cyl. (less maintenance than the V8), it "might" not be too expensive to keep up. BTW, a lot of people replace cooling system components on E39's as they age (either preventively, or after a failure).........

Of course, if you've been an Audi owner, owning an E39 w/o a warranty may not faze you.

If the BMW is only half as reliable as the Audi has been, I will be in good shape :) Lots of small things going bad, but in 80K miles, I've not been stranded once.

I hear you: nice 530i, stick shift, Xenons, & the SPP, for around $22K? (If it checks out): Sweet. I passed up an almost new 2001 525i Touring a couple of years ago with all the same equip.; I'm still kicking myself. The A4's are nice too.........drove a new A4 1.8 manual w/SPP a couple of years ago; wow.

Well, I did go for a test drive and... the car is NICE! The engine and transmission appear to be in top shape - very smooth. It took me a while to get used to the clutch - quite different from the Audi's. Now the bad part... The fenders and hood HAVE been repainted, BUT whoever did the job knew what (s)he was doing. I have to give a credit to the internet sales guy - he was very honest in his eBay description. As a matter of fact, the car's condition is better than described!
Decisions, decisions, decisions.... The fact that the car was in an accident doesn't bother me as much as the fact that the car is a BMW (I've owned several cars w/ salvage titles and every one was great!).

I figured that buy-it-now price was too low, unless there was some paint work..

If you keep it a long time, you can do okay.. If you look to trade it in a year or two, you'll give back that cheap price in a much lower trade-in value.....

Yeah, I know... The sales guy basically told me that the first bid is what he thinks (+/- couple hundred $$$) he can get from local wholesalers. The BIN price basically guarantees that you get the car... So, if I wait till the end, I SHOULD get the car for $21.6+TTL...

Fourth times the charm, I hope (see also 23168, 23227, 23388)? Please, please? My roommate is having some serious health problems and may need to sell or trade the following (perhaps temporarily for a beater, then hopefully to buy a new Corolla eventually):

2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport (mid-line model)
    4.0 6-cylinder, 5-speed manual
    black exterior, gray cloth interior
factory graphite alloy wheels and original Goodyears
    45k miles
    hard and soft tops
tilt wheel, rear defrost and wiper
    NO a/c
factory AM/FM cassette w/speakers in roll bar, NO CD player
NO modifications done of any kind
in Chicago 60657 (north side, near the rich DePaul kids)

Condition generally good, paint very nice, no major scratches or dings. Left corner (probably plastic part only) of rear bumper pushed in, but no compromise to structure or mounts of bumper. Interior good except one cig burn in driver's seat, needs general detailing but will be done before trade. Soft top missing one plastic window panel, hard top now installed and in good shape, wiper and rear defrost functional. Tires are original but surprisingly good for 45k (would it pay to spend the $600 to have them replaced anyway?). New brake pads all around, rotors in front. He owes somewhere around $7-7500, I'm thinking trade should well exceed that. Is winter (now) a good time to sell these, or are they more popular in Summer? What do you think on trade, or should he sell outright? Prices on these rigs are really all over the place. As always, thanks!!

..... This car has a salvage title.? ...

Lets say: straight title with painted and/or rebuilt hood and fenders .. dealer might have paid the super tall $16's low $17's, could have got brave if it was really really really nice and drop the super ultra high $17's, "maybe" the low low low low low $18's in it on a throw of the dice, maybe -- paint AND a handshaker, not a good match, I would rather have the Mumps .. on a fast turn and burn-it, I bet he would have taken $19,9 or less the closer to Christmas it became ................. :)

If it was minor damage (that is, no frame or engine stuff), and it was a top-notch repair, I would probably drop 19.9 on that 530i on the spot. Perfectly equipped, and good miles to boot.

But, if it used to be 2 feet shorter than it is now, I'd pass.

    ...... I was just waiting for it to be a re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-post ......... ;^)

It's an 01 Sport with 45k, we got the handshaker, both tops, no breeze, rear defrost, soft rubber, new stoppers, a few small meteorite hits here and there - all in all, probably not a bad Jeepster ..... weak rubber, a dealer will probably drop the mid/high $10's, maybe "might" step off the cliff and drop the low low low $11's, but I have a funny feelin' the $10,5ish would just about kill it .. so he's fine as far as the pay-off is concerned ..... down Retail Rd, new rubber, super amazing 4/5 liner Ad, great detail, Estate Sale.! - $12,900 *asking* and drop that bad boy like a bad habit for the first $11,5/$12,5 ....... pick your poison ~ but let me know.!

I need the real world trade in value on a 1999 Toyota Sienna XLE minivan.

    Options are:

    XLE line
    two tone paint
    leather
    moonroof
    cd player
    1 power sliding door
    fob remote
    60K miles
    20148 area (Northern VA)
Involved in a head on accident last week, being repaired ($4300 worth of damage) right now.

Items being replaced with geniune Toytoa parts:

Right headlight, radiator, a/c unit, and any other damage they discover while in there. The bumper and hood are also being replaced.

This was bad timing as this was the weekend we should be showing the car to sellers. But instead some guy decided to speed on a wet road going around a bed, lose control and hit me head on. Nice :(

Any thoughts what we could get on it as a trade in? We're assuming no one would buy it from us directly since it was involved in an accident. We had originally planned to sell it ourselves before the accident happened.

    Thanks,

    Carrie

Looking to buy used 03 Nissan Murano SE/loaded - mint - but 53k miles - dealer's asking $22k...looking to trade our Volvo V70 XC AWD and need a realistic trade in value. KBB #'s come in around $18.5k which seems pretty low...our buyout is $22.8k...think we can get close? Also, what do you think of $22k for the Murano?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

    Year/Make/Model:01 Volvo XC
    Body Style: Wagon - AWD

    Other: no damages

You are going to sell a nice low-mile Volvo XC wagon (the new body style, right?), and get a miled up butt-ugly Murano? (no offense intended).

Any particular reason? Is the Volvo not reliable? Or just want a sort-of SUV?

    just curious..

No salvage here - the title is nice and clean :)
Actually, I would prefer if the car had a salvage title and the price reflected it.... I've owned several of them in the past and have nothing but fond memories (like being 18 years old and being able to drive a '91 Mitsu 3000GT :). But I digress...

I may have to stop by one more time and take a closer look at what the extent of the damage was.

Even with the paint job, I'm pretty tempted... The used 528/530 market in Chicago appears to be pretty strong... cars.com or autotrader searches show similar cars to be at ~$25K+.

I would re-read Terry's post about 20 times before you buy this car. As well as take it to the very best high-end body shop in your area for a pre-purchase evaluation.

The part in Terry's post about "the closer to Christmas it gets, the guy will probably take $19,9 or less": think about it (esp. the "less" part). It may not sell on E-bay. It's a stick shift car with fairly major body damage, in where, Chicago? And it's 3 weeks to New Years when they'll be dying to sell this thing, if they can even find it under the snow drifts.

Personally, I'd chill a bit & evaluate other options. And maybe check out some nice E34 5series (6 cyl) w/o body damage........you'd save $$, might even like an E34 better. Lots of nice used BMW's out there. And if you really want this repaired 530i, based on what Terry is saying, I'd wait until N.Y.'s eve, go in there, & offer them $18K--something. ("Call their bluff"). It's a body damaged, 4 y.o., 50K mile stick shift car w/no warranty.........

The more I think about it the more I'm considering just calling one of my "friend" dealers and going with them to a local Manheim auction. If the handshakers are really so undesireble, I might as well go to the source and capitalize on it! In the worst case scenario, I'll lose half a day of my life... In the best case, I'll spend (+/-)$300 and buy a nice car.

Any idea what an avg $$ is lost to get out of these things? I know I'm going to lose $$ and I'm ready for that but how much is too much.
