    >>>I could be in CCBA but I dont like to brag. <<<

Don't look at it as bragging, look at it like admitting you have a problem is the first step towards recovery. Although I don't think recovery is a goal of CCBA...

Re-sale on manual transmissions vary according to how you are re-selling it.. If you go the private sale route, and you have a sporty car, then given enough time, you'll probably find a willing buyer at a fair price..

However, if you want to trade it in... dealers are looking for what sells best and fastest.. and automatics are where the business is.. and, you will take a hit on trade-in with a manual.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule.. The first that comes to mind is Porsche.. Tiptronic transmissions are a $3K option, and knock trade-in down by about $2K.. So, getting that automatic will cost you about $5K..

Manual Miatas probably bring about the same price as automatics.. Believe it or not, an automatic Vette probably brings more money than a manual..

    regards,

That I believe. My non scientific observations have shown me that the typical Vette driver is either a 50 YO male in his MLC or a trophy spouse.

    Fair enough.
Is that true of all makes? The auto and the stick are the same cost in the new corvettes. I can't imagine a corvette with an automatic, but that is me. I guess nobody is going to make a purchase decision on that vehicle based on what resale will be, but will it be a factor?

          ===============================

It depends on the vehicle, it's not so much the manual transmission, it's the market - most folks "prefer" automatics, most buyers drink Slurpys, read the WSJ, talk on the cell phone and do crossword puzzles while they're driving and the manual has gone wayside, plus gas mileage is "almost" the same, so it becomes a major convenient "thing" .... most of the handshaker buyers are usually younger for the sport side, or you get the guy going thru is mid-life crisis and can't live without his BMW 540 6-speed or the Vette (that ends up getting parked in the garage for 5 out of 12 months) ..

Manual trannys are kind of like "leasing" a car .. if you know what your going to be doing in 15 or 25 months, then it's not a problem, it's the folks that buy the handshaker and start going psycho in the next 15 months or less and they can't unload these dudes, especially the the hi-end imports, it can cost $2,000/$4,000 at trade-time depending on the vehicle and tuff to sell -- But .. if you really truly enjoy it and you know the ramifications upfront, then buy/drive and enjoy it ............ :)

PS: (disclaimer) handshakers in the sport types can find a market, sooner or later .. but handshakers in the SUV's can be the kiss of death.

leather's kinda dry but no cracks/rips and the interior is otherwise clean
    Chicago, IL

    Thanks in advance!
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Does it need a paint job, or will a proper detail bring out the shine in the paint again?
Given gas prices at $2.00 a gallon; the 17mpg or less that car will get around town; what is the market for the car? A/C blows cold? Sure there is NO rust, in Chicago? Look under the wheel wells and around the bottom area of the bumper.

$850-$1000 is about trade side money if it looks A1 with shiny paint. After a super detail, like new tires, prettied up real good, asking $2500 and out the door near $2,000. If it needs anything, start deducting. This is of course, assuming it does not reek of cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke can flat kill a Caddy.

An as-is price of around $1000, maybe $850, might be right on the money depending on condition. The older cars condition varies considerably. Since the paint is faded, I have to assume the maintenance was sub-par and it needs considerable work to be A1 condition. The $850 might have been a fair offer depending on its condition. A little detail and maintenance work can really bring the value up considerably.

    Terry,
    the RS has a V8 , t tops & power locks/windows. I was thinking about 2000.00 - 2500.00 .
The 04 monte I bought in October but the dealer bs'd me about the length of the warranty (it was a demo w/5K miles ). Wanted to know if it made sense to bail now. Seems I will hold on to it as it depreciated a great deal. I got it for almost 2 K under invoice plus the additional 3500 rebate so I did not do too bad.
    Thanks for all the info!!

You kinda left that part out ..l.o.l.. without the rust and the seats not all faded away, some cooold breeze and a great detail, you could *ask* $2,900 and maybe see $1,900/$2,500 .. the good thing about some of these are, they won't depreciate much more .............. ;)

Anyway ... we have a 03 Exploder XLT 4dr with 22k, V8, we have the 4wd, color is good, slider, 3rd seat, tow pack, tunes, boards .... If ~ we have some rubber left, no visits to the local body shop, no I ran over the folks waiting in line at Best Buys at 5:30 AM, no cut and snips in the interior and it's not all smoked out .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $14's, might maybe "could" find a dealer that lost his mind and drop the low $15's in it .. I have a feeling the Galves book will hold this one back ............. ;)

It's probably a lot better than you make it sound and it just "looks" bad ... it needs a great detail and probably some rubber(?) .. $850.? .. thats a little on the cheap side, unless it's all rusted out and it needs bunches of stuff ...

If everything works and runs like a champ, then if I were him (and I'm not) I would drop a few bucks at the detail shop and get myself a great Ad .. then $2,900 *asking* and sell it to the first Santa Elf for $1,9/$2,5 ..... remember: dirty vehicles get dirty money - and clean vehicles get clean money ...

    "... V8, short miles, (Auto.?)..."

Tundra V8's only come with the auto transmission.
    More's the pity.

These things are nasty strong in the market... I have a feeling if that truck were to be drove (*) up here to MI or maybe WI, it would easily see $21 or $22 on the street... low mile 4x4, rust-free even on the dirty parts... can't find them around here, that's fer sure.

Yep, but with the V6 only... the local dealer allows as how he's never even seen one... I don't think they went through all the trouble certifying the V8/stick combo.

The V8/auto is one sweet powertrain, though.

    Hi Terry,

Long time listener, first time caller..

NE Ohio - Akron / Canton
    2002 Honda Accord Special Edition
    4-dr sedan
    4 cyl
    Auto trans
    35K
    Black ext / grey interior
Alloy wheels, factory roof, single CD, PW/PDL/cruise
Condition - good, would look alot better with a proper detail. Some light scratches on the edge of the trunk, easily buffed out. Otherwise dirty but not damaged. Smoked in though.
Brakes - rotors shake very lightly on hard stops, tires, about 40%, only maintenence done is oil changes every 4K
    No damage or wrecks

This is a model Honda made out of Accord LX models; they basically added the alloy wheels & roof to make it a little nicer than the LX. I think this was a factory version though as I've seen lots of them around in many areas.

Drives great, just needs a good cleaning. It's my mom's car, just trying to give her a hand.. Thanks Terry - keep up the good work!

Condition now- both passenger doors destroyed, B pillar pushed in~6inches into cabin; Rear quarter panel damaged, drivers rear axle possibly ruined
(wheel still on but angled inward about 60 degrees-after being pushed into curb)

    ..... Naw Jersey.?

Well ...... it's a Convert .. it's a Bimmer convert .. it's a 330cic convert with the black and tan .. it also has the sport and the HK .. it's a Bimmer convert with 37k and the auto thing ... if it's clean, no Popeyes chicken in the seats, no curb burners, no paint by numbers, no stitch and go in the top .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $26 figure, might maybe "could" find a dealer that might crawl/fall/stall into the $27 figure, but because of the area and miles, I would think $26 would just about do it .......

What a beautiful thing: **i dont owe anything on the car but am worried** -- be happy, don't worry ........... :)

    " B pillar pushed in~6inches into cabin; "

    Glad everyone is okay.
Hope & pray that they won't raise this one from the dead. If they do, hope and pray you leased it... :-(

Unhit, this thing would be worth some serious money... a guy can do a lot of body work for $10k, let alone $20+.

.... Whoa Bud, is everyone okay..? .... cars a replaceable, people aren't ........

Here's the deal on a smack like this ... **YOU** need to be there with the insurance co *and* the body shop for the "tear down" .. depending on the body shop, they will be lookin' for a home run, ever see a surgeon work for half price..?

There has been alot of posts lately on Edmunds about these type of situations - and it all starts off at a nice comfortable $5,500 and 2 months later "Wango Tango" they seem to be lookin' down the barrel of $11,0/$12,000+ and your renting a Hyundai that your paying for ...

A "good" quality body guy will have a pretty good idea, but go brain dead with the insurance company .. now, he can be off by a thousand here and a thousand there and parts are parts ... You need to know the: "Worst Case Scenario", so bring your camera and take LOT's of notes, once they have these things torn down, it's like a lottery ticket, a feeding frenzy for these guys ... check it out, then let me know all of the stuff - could very well be a total, or close enough to make it worth 60% at trade time ............... let me know.!

Terry and Mathias, thanks for the quick responses and concern. When i made it to the accident site and saw both wife and son were just shaken up i felt relieved. Then I took a look at the car and got scared again-there's no way they're alright but they were. Family's welfare always is first priority. Now i have to deal with the financial mess. I agree with you 100% I don't want a pieced together car that's unsellable in a few years and no matter what they say no one gets the car back into good enough shape to take another whack like that again. Of note, i'm buying the car not leasing so financial hit becomes very personal.
Will take your advice terry and let you know the outcome soon.
P.S. One question - how and when do i bring up the issue of diminished value if they try to fix this thing?

.. **Long time listener, first time caller..** .. l..o..l...

What happened to the Browns yesterday.? .. they score 48 points and they still lose.!?! amaaazing .!

In the Land of the NEC ... we have a 02 SE Honda, 4dr 4 banger, 35k small miles for the year, the color is ok for the area, auto, slider, wheels, typical SE, yep very familiar with them, take an LX and put some stuff on em' and Honda makes an extra $400 a unit, not bad .....

If it cleans up, then trade side, in and around the low/mid $11's, maybe "might" see a dealer waddle towards the $12 figure .. but with "tumbleweed" time fast approaching and the weather seeing snowflakes, I have a funny feeling the mid $11's would just about do it ........... :)

Let me know how it goes ....

.... They made a few 01/02 V8 handshaker Tundra's and the word here is few, veeeery few .. they're kinda like an Audi A8 with no leather, no pack and no slider ........ ;)

Hello! I was told my Juice in the Subaru Impreza Outback Sport / TS board that someone here by the name of Terry would be able to figure out spot on what the real world trade in value of my vehicle is? :-) Anyone else is welcome to help too of course.

Location Palatine, IL (Northwest Suburb of Chicago)

2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Sport Wagon

    Engine 2.5 165 hp boxer 4

    Driveline AWD

    Mileage 53500

Exterior color silver with beige bumpers and door strip things (whatever they're called)

Alloy Wheels, Sony CD Player with steering wheel audio controls added on, Viper car alarm with Remote Start (550 ESP I believe) Arm rest air filtration system carpeted floor mats rubber floor mats (yes I have both) roof rack automatic dimming mirror with compass, mudflaps and I think that's it for options.

Exterior paint is in good condition. A couple of chips on front that haven't rusted (thank you wax) have touch up paint to touch up before trade in. There's a red blotch of paint on the driver's door (can probably buff out) and some paint missing from the plastic beige door thing (should be able to touch up) There's no dings or dents that I've noticed.

Interior looks like new. I've been very anal about keeping it nice on the inside.

Tires are Yokohama AS430s and were new in August

All maintenance up to 40k miles was done at a Subaru dealer. After that point we've maintained it ourselves.

Now for prior damage . . . :-) The car was purchased in June of 2001 (Subaru released the '02s early). In January of 2002 (with 12k miles on the odometer) I was run onto a median on I-94 which caused 12,000 worth of damage to the car. Insurance picked up the tab and repaired the car. Most of the suspension was replaced and the car was completely repainted in the original silver/beige colors. It was done with all genuine Subaru Parts. Looking at the car right now you wouldn't know it was in an accident.

Carfax also does NOT show this accident despite there being a major police write up and tickets issued (to the other guy) as well as a massive insurance claim.

So with all that being said, what can I expect for trade in value if I was to trade it in a few months from now.

Warn them you plan to pursue a DV claim before they fix it. Then get an independant appraiser to appraise it, you have up until the statute of limitations for property damage in your state (2 years where I live).

Hey Terry - Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. Once again I come to the master seeking knowledge.

Just got back from the Toyota dealer, tired of spending money on it, and wife wants to sell it to a family member who needs a car. I may drive it through the winter, and I may not...

    Location: Columbus, OH
    Year/Make/Model: '96 Toyota Avalon XL
Engine: 3.0 liter, 6 cylinder, auto
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 170k
    Color: Tan/Tan

Major Options: alloys, sun roof, leather, 12 disk CD changer, keyless entry/alarm/remote start

Condition: Good considering age and miles. A few minor dings and scratches, driver's side seat leather shows some wear, but interior is good otherwise.

      Tires - about 50%
      Brakes: New
Maintenance: Current except for some seals/gaskets/CV boots that need to be replaced (about $1800 worth) Service dept said just keep an eye on the oil after I declined the repairs. I have been, and it isn't losing much. Will deduct the cost from my price. New PS pump and rack.

Other: front and rear bumper covers have been replaced/repainted. (parking garage - Jeep didn't want to stay parked and rolled into the back pushing the front into the wall.)

As usual, thanks for your help.

P.S. The TL is still awesome. :-)
