My guess is, "moot", if you're trading it. The dealer can probably buy tires for less than you.....btw, what are you buying? (just curious).

*Also, what would the benefit of slapping new shoes on her be? Would I see a return on investment for doing that, or is it pretty moot if I'm trading tomorrow?*

    .. **Terry,

Wondering if you can give me a trade in value for the following...

    2003 Murano SL
    Silver outside... black inside
    2WD
    Central FL (Tampa/Orlando)
    just under 31k miles
Premium Package (Leather guts, sunroof, Bose 6 disc sound system, power everything, HID headlights)... No Nav, DVD or Traction Control, though
a small ding on each side of her... plus the front driver's corner of the bumper has a pretty good scrape in it from a parking lot pole, but not a hole or anything though. Also, the car has a few paint chips on the front end (the paint on the Murano is so thin!)
Tires are original and pretty worn (about 75% maybe)... Alternator is less than 500 miles old and, other than the few mishaps mentioned above, she has been babied and Zainoed since day one, so the paint really shines when clean.
I've got a dealer making me a great offer on a vehicle if I buy by Monday... trying to get in there in Sunday, because of Halloween. If you can't respond by then, no biggie! kbb shows about $19,500 and that doesn't sound too bad, but I want to make sure I get my full value for it.
Also, what would the benefit of slapping new shoes on her be? Would I see a return on investment for doing that, or is it pretty moot if I'm trading tomorrow?
You've helped me before and I really appreciate it, Terry! Thanks!!!

in Bucks territory .... we have a 03 Murano SL 2WD .. the miles are low low low, the exterior color is good, the interior color is bad, we got the Bozo sound, slider, Prem pack, hydes, HID, the rubber has left the building, we have some baby kisses and a few love bug attacks ......... trade side, in and around the super tall $18's low/mid $19's depending on the dealer ... leave the rubber alone, a dealer can drop $250 and have it done and $150/$200 for the scrape .....

Happy hunting, happy Halloween and let me know what happens ..... by the way, what are you trading for and whats the pay-off ....?

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!!

The wife and I decided to go fun and get a convertible... right now were both torn between a Crossfire (for the two seater speed demon in us both) and a Solara (for the sensible, yet fun loving refined demon in us both).

I figured the Solara would be a problem to negotiate on, since they are in such high demand, but the salesguy was offering me sub $30k for one without me even working on them. The Crossfire is no sweat, because they want to sell those so bad they are slitting their own throats to move them...

If you didn't have to worry about hauling kids around, which would you choose? Obviously the Toyota will be reliable and it's almost Lexus-ish... but the Crossfire is such a fun car to look at and to drive... It's apples to oranges, I know... ;)

We've got much less than 19k to pay off on the Mo, so no sweat there. *phew*!

Thanks a ton for your input and replying so quickly, Terry!!

Convertibles are going out of season and it doesn't appear that there is very strong demand in all areas. Shop around and you should be able to get a good deal on the Solara. The Crossfire is based on the SLK so it might feel sportier and more solid than the Solara. Also, IIRC, the Solara was not designed from the ground up to be a convertible so the Crossfire might feel more solid with the top down.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
When in doubt, I'd say, go Toyota--even if the Crossfire is a little more "fun", or whatever. Chrysler products sometimes have lousy resale, & not so great reliability; while just the opposite holds for Toyotas. (Imagine what the resale is for used Crossfires if dealers are desperate to sell new ones).

*Obviously the Toyota will be reliable and it's almost Lexus-ish*
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
If you take the Toyota vs. Chrysler argument to its logical conclusion....
... then the advice has to be to get a Crossfire. Used.

Thanks for the feedback... one more question on the trade-in value of the Mo... Does an extended warranty (7 year/75,000 miles) add any value to it? It was purchased through Nissan.

Had to move things back til tomorrow... I appreciate everyone's input so far. Thanks!

In my slow motion quest for a reasonbly priced 330 ZHP. I located this example somewhat local:

    WBAEV53424KM05402

'04 BMW 330i 4 door sedan, 3.0 six, 6 speed, 15k miles, Red over grey alcantra mouse-fur. ZHP Performance Package, which includes Sport Package bits plus other stuff, Premium Package (roof, etc.)

I haven't seen it, but let's say it's condition is what to expect for a 15k bimmer. The highway Toyota dealer website it's at links to a supposedly clean Carfax. The asking price is $31,995, which is significantly below others of same year and more miles. O what say Terry on a real transaction price? TIA

    Hi Terri,

You the man, someone sent me over to this board to get your advise. I have a '96 Lexus GS300 with 114K miles. The car is clean has all options including the "gold" package. One minor ding between the LR fender well and the rear door, it is hardly noticable. Approx 20% of the rubber left.

I am considering trading the car in and have looked at a variety of sources for trade-in value. Everything I have seen says $5,500 to $6,800 for a dealer trade-in. Went shopping on Saturady for a VW Passat and the dealer first offered me $3,800 and said they could come up to $4,500 but that was the final offer.

I live in Northern New Jersey, any idea of the value?

    Thanks for your help.

Terry, looking for a trade in value in Cincinnati for a:

    2000 Honda Accord
    EX Coupe
    3.0 Liter V6, Automatic
    77,000 miles
Dark Green Exterior, Tan Leather Interior
Sunroof, power driver seat, power windows, locks, air, CD (single), AC
New brakes (all 4) 4,000 miles ago
    Tires 20% worn
    Oil changed every 4,000 miles
Transmission, radiator serviced a few months ago

Interior is clean, but not spotless, driver's seat is worn on the outside seam
Now the bad news  , the car has been wrecked, twice. The hood has been replaced, the front bumper (twice), and one front fender. There are some scratches on the rest of the car, nothing major, my daughter had it in college so it has its share of parking lot scratches and scrapes.

She's started her first job and has that new car itch. I'm trying to get her to wait until spring, but she wants to get some idea of what her car is worth. I'm trying to decide, trade or private sale. I know the color, accidents and exterior condition are no help.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Hey guys,

I'm just hoping to get an expert's opinion -

    Location: St. Louis, MO
Year/Make/Model: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
    Body Style: SUV
    Engine: V6 automatic
    Driveline: 4WD
    Mileage: 70,000
    Color: Sandstone (Darker gold)
Major Options: leather, both front seats power and heated, premium sound with 10 disc changer (all factory), power sunroof, power heated mirrors, Electrochromatic Rear View Mirror, auto on/off headlights, overhead console, alarm, sunscreen glass
    Condition:
    - Body and paint are in good shape (no accidents), interior kept clean
    - Tires – have 20,000 miles on them, brakes in good order
    - Maintenance – regular checks/fluid changes
    - Other - no prior damage/insurance claims or repaints
    Edmunds TMV Trade - $7,092

Also wondering if there would be a significant advantage to waiting until Dec-Jan-Feb (winter driving season) to trade in an SUV.

Thanks! This is a great resource.

If you're trading it in, no, the warranty amounts to ZIP. You need to cancel it and get a refund for the prorated difference. If you were selling it privately, then it would be a different story.

    *2001 Ford Expedition 2WD
*"No Boundaries" edition (sorta between an Eddie Bauer and XLT)
*Black ext with grey leather int
    *4.6L V8
    *73K miles
*All the usual power goodies you'd find on an XLT

    *17" alloy wheels
    *Trailer Tow
    *3rd row seat
    *Newish tires
    *No accidents

    Actually reposting this time...

I got a line on an MDX of the color/model/year that is more or less exactly what I've been looking for. Worked out a deal, but haven't yet signed papers. Need info fast. The question now is... am I nuts?

Okay, the obvious answer to that is, yes, but am I nuts for this particular deal.

    Outside bean town
    1999 CR-V EX
    5MT and AWD
    113K miles
    Silver
Added roof rack, alarm, tow hitch, and heated moo hides
In clean condition (minor scratches, one ding)
    Tires 'bout 50% worn
Brakes and everything else are good.
2 rear-enders! But no damage to painted parts (muffler and bumper skin have been replaced)

Trading for a 2004 MDX Touring in silver with 33K miles. No options. Very clean condition.

The dealer is offering me $6,000 for the CR-V and selling the MDX for an even $32K.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Wellllllll.........maybe. I gathered he only wanted to buy New. And maybe it's my past experience owning 2 Toyotas, & 2 Chrysler products over the years. Of course, I'd probably be looking for a mint condition used bmw Z4, or E46 Convertible in his price range.....(or less).

*If you take the Toyota vs. Chrysler argument to its logical conclusion....

    FOLLOW UP:

Well, I worked the local Toyota dealer via phone and fax regarding the price. I had a potential buyer of the car (was going to sell it for about $21k to a friend) fall through at the last minute, so I dropped the Murano in as a trade at the last minute.

Worked the Solara down to $600 over invoice before TTL and then watched as the manager of the place tried to low ball me at $17k for the Mo. After a polite arguement over their numbers, he went back and offered me $18,500 instead. Seeing as how I got more than I was looking for on the new side, I figured I was making out like a bandit and agreed.

Thanks to EVERYONE who offered advice on this deal. It is greatly appreciated!!

    Terry,

This one is tough because of a rebuilt engine. Does this add or subtract value? Anyway...

    Durham, NC
    1998 Chevy Blazer LT 4WD
    4DR Wagon
    Vortec 4300 V6 OHV 12V SFI Engine
    100K Miles
    White exterior/Beige leather interior
Options: Towing package, underbody shield package, roof rack, running boards, bug deflector, side window deflectors plus everything that comes standard with the LT package (basically loaded except for a sunroof).
Condition: Very good. Paint looks new. Small dent in the rear bumper on the far right. Tires with 12K miles on them. Well maintained.
Other: Rebuilt engine at 71K miles. Runs great without any problems. Airbag light comes on intermittently.

My wife thinks we can get $6,500 but I think she is off her gourd. I would be happy with $5K. Your opinion is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

This van is being sold by a friend. I really hate doing business with a friend, but I am kind of stuck now. I like the van but don't really think it is worth what they are asking. They want 10,500. I know they would take 10,000. I don't believe it is worth more than 8,000, but I don't know (guess you knew that). Please help me:

It is a low top conversion van. It has:

1999 Chevy Express Conversion Van they asking $10,000
30004 zip code (ga, near atlanta, ga)
    Sherrod EVO I Conversion Package
    brown/beige/taupe color
    80k miles
    no tv, dvd, etc.
    not a high top
    has quad seating
    sofa seats in the back
    power seats
    cloth interior
    Rear Air
    Supposed to be extended size
    towing package
    running boards
    alloy wheels
    good tires
minor wear (good condition, not excellent)
    mechanical good
    never wrecked
    5.7 V8

    You said:

In the land of the Falcons ... we have a 2004 Honda Odyssey EX-RES with 16,000 short miles ............. the color is right, no soccer Mom interior, no affairs at Maaco, good color and no battles at K-mart ........ trade side, in and around the mid/high $20ish figure, might maybe see the low low low low low low $21 figure .....

Now, we want to flip the 04 Ody for the 03 MDX..? ....... the MDX has 55k (kinda tall) good color, nav, rubber is kinda deep and you "think" it's pretty fat daddy for an 03 ....... the dealer might have paid the super tall $22's, low low $23's for it ... figure a this and that (no CPO.?) and it might hit the table at the tall $23's low low $24's .... figure a little profit - and you might be trading for your Ody and in and around the $4ish figure ...... I think you're going backwards .... what are they asking ....?

We did the deal. They gave us $21000 for the Odyssey EX-RES with 16k and sold us the MDX Touring with 55k for $22300. Total difference $1300.

On a side note, it appears my dear husband is FINALLY ready to sell his LS. Carmax offered $5500 for an immaculate 94 Lexus LS400 Anniversary Edition with 126k. The car has new tires, white exterior with tan leather. Nakamichi, heated seats, traction, 6-disc changer. Should we take it an run or sell it private party?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... $1,300 ....? that was pretty darn good ..!! .... I'm not particularly crazy about the 55k .. but as far as the numbers are concerned, it's a good trade ...

The LS ....? .. $5,500 is fair, very fair .. that said, LS's get some serious $$ even on the Retail side with big miles (small miles for the year) that's why the dealer isn't afraid of it .....

Me personally.? .. I would run this dude down Retail Rd .. serviced, paperwork, super bath, BIG Ad, blah-blah-blah and: $8,900 *asking* and cut it loose for $8/$8,5 ..... big market on these, maybe the 21 year old kid, maybe the 45 year old guy in his mid-life crisis, could even be the retired guy that wants the big name and the reliability ..... unlike the risk of a Benz or Bimmer ..l.o.l.....

    Congrats on the new MDX!

"We did the deal. They gave us $21000 for the Odyssey EX-RES with 16k and sold us the MDX Touring with 55k for $22300. Total difference $1300."

Me too. Picked mine up last night. We traded the 5MT CR-V (115K miles) for $6K. Drove away with a 2004 MDX-t (33K miles) for $32K. Probably not the best deal I could have gotten, but I don't think I got ripped (right?).

Maybe we'll bump into one another at the next MDX rally. ;)
  • breldbreld Member Posts: 6,918
Last we talked, I was getting a $25,500 trade on my 03 MDX Touring on a 06 Sienna AWD, purchase price at $200 over invoice. This was a "be there" deal according to Terry, and based on the previous poster paying $22,300 for his 03 MDX Touring, I think I better "get there." Granted mine has 20k less miles, but still.

Anyway, I was overly optimistic on the value of our MDX, and so the price differential is higher than expected on doing this deal. My wife and I decided that we should maybe just "make do" and keep the MDX. Then, wouldn't you know it, we finally get a call on the MDX from a buyer who may be interested at $29k (meeting with him tomorrow), and the dealer called back with another $500 on the trade, offering $26,000 (apparently the Acura dealer now has a live one). 8.1% tax savings puts that pretty close to the $29k private party sale.

So, perhaps the smart thing to do is to just keep our current ride (it usually is, isn't it?), but I told my wife if we do want the van, this is a good deal. We'll see.

All the advice given out here is invaluable. Thanks.

If you think the dealer is really wanting to step up to do the deal which is already on the money and they came up another "real" $500 to try and get you done. I would try for a little more. Call them and say at $26,250 for my trade and the same $200 over invoice you will come down right now and do it. You will need to be prepared to actually go to the dealership to finalize the deal right then. After the sales person comes back and if they say they cannot do it, tell them you are still going to have to think about it.

Who knows, they might do it. You already left the dealership.

One for the Oracle, err, Terry:

    Location: Detroit Metro area
    1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE
    3.8L V6 FWD
    Mileage: 104k
    Color: Green/Charcoal interior
Options: Power drivers seat, p/w, p/l, not much else
    Condition:
    - Bought the car in Texas three years ago with only 40k miles on it. No rust anywhere
    - All fluids maintained per manuf. maintenance schedule
    - Tires at 50%
    - In the last few months: New shocks, new intake plenum, new engine computer, alignment, rad flush.
    - Has cracked windshield, I have not fixed it because it's on the passenger side only
    - Paint in good condition, very few door dings/scratches, definitely above average for a 1995.
    - Interior is also nice, no french fries, sucker sticks, or bubble gum

I'm thinking asking $3k and cut her loose at $2,5. Is this a fair asking price or should I aim higher/lower?

    Thanks!

If you don't get the windshield fixed, don't ask over $2,000 and expect many offers over $1500.

A cracked windshield will indicate to any buyer that the car has not been taken care of properly. Plus it will not pass any safety inspection. Most insurance companies will not insure it until the glass is replaced.

$3000 is fair asking after a good detail and the windshield fixed, should see $2500 in short order. Might even get the full $3000+ if it had nearly new tires and a full inspection on the seat by a good ASC mechanic along with the windshield fixed. Shouldn't last long if done right and not over priced for the market. At $3,000 you might not even need an ad in the paper if it were ready to sell and drive. Just put the for sale sign in it when you go shopping at Wal-mart and any high school sporting events, making sure it is parked were it will be well visible.

    ????

I've sold a number of cars with cracked windshields. I've been willing to deduct from my asking price for the cost of a replacement window, but not $1500 off. Many states don't have safety inspections. I don't know about the sellers state. When I insure a car my insurance company has never asked me about the windshield.

Not necessarily. I know up here in Alaska you could have the windshield replaced, drive 1/2 mile and it'll be broken again. Vehicles in Alaska tend to drive around with the "Alaskan" windshield, it just gets too expensive to replace it every time it gets cracked. I'm sure there are other states that are the same way. Insurance companies up here don't even ask about the windshields anymore.

In the words of the great one, " dirty cars bring dirty money, and don't give them a reason not to buy your car."

Cracked windshields (as does a very dirty car) on an otherwise nice looking car indicate to most buyers no pride in ownership, hence the car may be beat up where you cannot see it. Especially when a windshield is under $300 for most domestic vehicles installed!!!! You either want it to be an easy sale for the most money, or you want to unload the beater to the first buyer with any kind of cash offer in hand.

A 10 year old Domestic with 100K. The only way to get top dollar for the car is to make it look like it is worth top dollar. Otherwise you are feeding to the market of someone who needs a car today and has usually one maybe two paychecks worth of cash on hand.

As for the windshield being cracked. It is a clear safety violation in virtually all States that you can be pulled over by the police. Get a mechanical safety violation ticket, it gets reported even if you fix it, your insurance could go up, if you do not fix it usually within 30 days, you also have to pay the fine.

Alaska's market doesn't count. This car lives in the upper midwest.

I have a 2005 KIA Spectra5. I had work done on it due to hit and runs. Verry minor work and it looks great and brand new again. I have 10,000 miles on the car. I would like to trade it in only because I feel I have had a stream of bad luck with it and want another car. What's the trade in value? Thanks in advance

Congrats your new MDX too! What color did you buy?

I really like the MDX. Drives great for something of it's size and the 3.5L is plenty peppy for daily driving.

Even without all the details on the car, it is a KIA Spectra that has been in a pinball machine!!!!

I would be suprised if the actual cash value after a used car manager appraises the trade in is over $6,000.

The Kia dealer has used 2005 Spectras that were ex-rentals and less than 20K on them advertised all the time for $7,999. The 2004s are advertised for usually $5,999.

    hello all,
I want to trade in my 2000 nissan frontier 4x4 xe king cab.. its a 5 speed,58000 miles, very good condition inside and out. tires are pretty worn. matching cap(about $1000). I want to trade in for 2006 titan. Just wondering also if you usually get more for trade in like a nissan for nissan at a nissan dealership as opposed to nissan for a ford at a ford dealership. would appreciate any comments on the value. thanks

This is a car I'm going to look at, so I'm not clear on the condition, but the linked carfax says one local owner. I have a mechanic I trust to check it out if it looks good in person, but I'd like to know what's reasonable, provided it's in good condition.

    Many Thanks!!!

Update on my friend's '98 boxster with 86,000 miles

$15,900 *asking* and cry and whimper at $14,5/$15,0 .. but take it ...... if he does it right, he'll sell it quickly ... if he nickels and dimes it, then so will be the offers ... clean cars get clean money and dirty cars get .. well, sometimes ya hafta to make a planter out of em' ...

You may want to increase your stake in any potting soil companies you hold. He had it detailed, then started at $17,500. He's now down to $16,500 and is still complaining about the lowballers.

    Good Afternoon!
I live in Saint Louis, Missouri. I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited 3.7 liter engine, 4WD, automatic, with every option and upgrade except the navigation system. It has 13,000 miles on it and I keep it in a show room condition, and I also bought the extended warranty with maintenance and oil changes. There is nothing wrong with the car, I just dont like it. I wanted to know what price I could expect as a trade in? I wanted to take advantage of not paying another $1,300 in sales tax, or do you think I would do better selling it on the street? Thank you in advance. :)
