Terry, Car_man suggested I ask your advice on the real-world value of my car. I have a really bad lease on it so I'm trying to figure how much I'll lose if I sell it or trade it in. Location: Freehold,NJ Year/Make/Model: 2005 Toyota Highlander w/3rd Row (not Limited) Body Style: SUV Engine: 3.3L V6 Auto Driveline: AWD Mileage: 7900 Color: Bluestone Metallic/Ivory Leather Major Options: Appearance Package, Cold Weather Package, Leather Seat Package, DRL, moonroof, privacy glass, JBL w/6 CD changer, front and side airbags (these are just the major options -I have most of the options) Condition: Flawless Exterior/Interior Tires: Not sure, probably not much - I've only had it since April - i guess, new Brakes: Not sure, probably not much - I've only had it since April - i guess, new Maintenance: All performed by local dealer
Actually there are real mountains with real snow 2 hours from LA, not that we ever go there :-) The Denali comes standard with 4WD or AWD or whatever it is, so that's why we have it. My husband wanted the Denali because he thought it looked cool at the time. Men. And yup, I know that lack of third row seat will hurt us. On the positive side I think they sell better in LA due to our not having rust problems like in the snowbelt.
Woody - thanks for the reply and insight. While the Sienna adds a good deal of functionality we desire (hence the change), the MDX certainly still meets our needs fairly well. So, if we're willing to walk away if it's not a good deal, perhaps that will motivate the dealer a little more to deal on the trade.
As far as giving the "whole" picture for Terry, here it is: Looking to purchase in Denver:
2006 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD
Dealer's price is $1,369 over invoice. Not the best deal I have seen, but pretty consistent with Carsdirect and other deals I have heard of in this region.
Trading in:
2003 MDX Touring w/DVD Entertainment (no NAV) Sagebrush pearl (greyish green)/grey leather 35k miles No other extra accessories or options (just standard Touring goodies) Good condition in and out - couple of door dings, few minor scratches, garaged, no accidents.
Dealer offered $27,000, claimed best offer from area Acura dealers was $26,200, and he is "borrowing" $800 profit from the Sienna deal. So, I always had believed that they really called these other dealers for bids - is that just bogus? In any case, given this statement, I asked, and the dealer acknowledged, that he's willing to take less of a profit if the trade was not in the picture.
So, while we're waiting for our color to come in, we threw the MDX in the paper, asking $30,600. Been there for two weeks and no takers.
Thoughts on the $27k trade and my private party asking price? Thanks for all the help.
Doesn't California still have required EPA and minimum safety inspections? On trade, it has the value that any salvage yard would give for the car. ~$200 On private sale, it has about double that amount. ~$400
It is a crashed Neon with salvage title, not much going for a value there.
I would like to know how you managed to keep insurance on it without actually fixing the damage to the vehicle and having it certified repaired after it was called a total loss.
I'm thinking you got an answer for the private party price: "[..] asking $30,600. Been there for two weeks and no takers."
That sounds loud and clear to me.
Auction side, I finagled to see this: 09/14/05 MILWAUKE Regular $23,500 42,768 Avg DKBLUE 6G A Yes 09/22/05 GTR TMPA Regular $23,600 43,276 Avg RED 6G A Yes 09/30/05 MANHEIM Regular $24,000 43,711 Avg BLACK 6G A Yes 09/28/05 CEN FLA Lease $20,600 49,183 Below SILVER 6G A Yes
So I have a feeling he's telling you the truth.
Personally, even at $27, I'd just step up to a new one or forget the whole affair... I'm thinking you're seeing a bit of the Denver dividend for the mountains + snow you get to deal with in winter.
You're really........thinking of trading a 2005 Accord LX-V6 for a Hyundai??? This is one of the WORST ideas I've ever read on any auto. forum. It's like trading a Cartier watch (at least, one of their less expensive ones) for a Timex because the Timex has a couple more "features". :confuse:
The 2006 Accord V6 has stability control standard. The NHTSA star ratings do not reflect real-world safety. The IIHS ones (www.hwysafety.org) give a better picture. They haven't tested the 2006 Sonata yet, but the old model was nothing to write home about. The Accord with side airbags did fine.
With the Sonata, you're considering a new model from a company with a poor reputation for quality. You are likely to need the warranty on the Hyundai.
Of the things you mentioned, the stability control is the only thing I think might give you an advantage, and if I really wanted it, I'd just trade for a 2006 Accord V6.

Options: Blue Santorin Pearl paint Sport package Moonroof Sport Seats Homelink Auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors Xenon headlights
Original MSRP (including freight): 27,790
Very good condition, all dealer maintenance except additional oil changes I did myself couple of small dings on doors, one each side. Paint is still in very good condition. Interior is spotless.
Tires: New at 30K, about 50% tread left.
Maintenance done by dealer (included in standard warranty that went 4 years/50K
I have logged every oil change and every tank of gas, and the car has been garaged. I consider it to be in excellent condition. No accidents or damage. Windshield has a small crack at base of passenger side from rock. Otherwise it is perfect.
Got an offer of 9500 from Carmax (just to sell) and 8000 from a dealer (who started at 6500) for a trade for an 05 Honda CR-V. KBB, Edmunds, and NADA average trade in is about 10K.
Any thoughts or advice? I'll likely be trying to sell it myself here soon.
I guess I wasn't clear. I fixed the broken break light but not the cringled sheet metal. Then I did the various inspections to get retitled. You need to do a break and light inspecation and then they do a quick inspection at the DMV. If you have major reconstruction I think they refer you for a more through inspection.
I'll try another re-post on this one; things can get buried pretty quickly here!
Looking for a value for- Location-Pac NW 2000 BMW Z3 Convertible "2.3" inline 6 automatic 64000 miles white with black top & interior all power options including power top, leather, wood, heated seats extremely clean tires replaced 4000 miles ago clean title
I have really enjoyed this car and its really solid. I have just recently moved into the middle of downtown Seattle and find that, while I love the size, I now use a car mostly when it is raining or when I need to carry something. Great match for a Z3, right? What could I expect at trade? KBB and NADA put trade in around $13K and $15K, respectively, but I know winter is coming. A scan through AutoTrader shows asking local dealer retail prices from $17k to $20k for same year similar miles...
..... **The reason why I'm thinking about trading the Honda is the Hyundai warranty, additional safety features such as electronic stability control, 5-star crash test rating for both front and side (the Accord only received 4 stars on the side crash rating) leather, etc. I think the Honda drives a tad better, but I wanted to get anyone's opinion on this deal .....** ====================================
Well for starters ......
Hyundai's need that warranty to overcome the last 10 years of a "very dismal history" .... there is a Kazillion Honda's out there with 120/150/200,000 miles on em' and still ticking along the highways and byways - it's kinda the norm .... Safety.? .. all the test dummies would rather be in the Honda - just ask one .........
And Hyundai's.? .. well lets put it this way, when you figure in all of the buy-backs that are "quiet, but abundant" and all of the un-reported service problems via the rental car agencies, then add in the miserable resale value (because low mileage 05's hardly see the $13 figure on a trade) your going to find yourself light years ahead of the game in the Honda ....
Now - and 75,000 miles from now ......................
Hi, I would like to know if you can give me a real world trade in value for my 2005 PT Cruiser. It is a 4 door Touring model with the following:
automatic 6 disk changer alloy wheels electric drivers seat cruise control 6800 miles bright silver exterior, slate interior
Everything else is standard for the touring model. It is is perfect condition, no dings, scratches, stains, and still even smell like a new car. The dealer I contacted gave me a line saying that no car is considered in "excellent" condition by a dealer, unless it has never been titled or driven off the lot. So therefor, no one is going to give me kbb or edmunds "excellent" rating price. I know he's bs'ing because I know what he can turn around and sell my car for. Could you please give me your opinion on the value? Thanks
Still doesn't make any real difference on the value. It is a 97 Neon with a Salvage title that has not even had the damage repaired 100%.
Were it properly fixed with the salvage title, it would be worth in and around 40% of what a non-wrecked clean title Neon of like miles would be worth, ~$3000 because of the low miles. Fixed with salvage title worth ~$1200.
As-is with crinkled metal, if the trunk does not leak, around 1/2 the $1,200 or ~$600 give or take selling it to McDonalds Joe Worker who needs something to drive right away and has a couple of weeks paychecks saved up.
If you know what you can turn around and sell the car for, then by all means get your money and sell it.....
No car is excellent condition except for very, very few. Given that it is a Chrysler product, it pretty much was not excellent condition when it was new. It may be better than most good condition similar vehicles, but not likely it qualifies as excellent.
A new 2006 Touring has a retail out the door price of $14,900 after all rebates as of today.
Used price for a one year older 2005 with some miles on it has to be at least $2,500 less retail, $12,500 after a full dealer detail and check out. So trade side is going to be a couple of thousand less than that, the dealer has to cover the costs of doing business, overhead, the cost of the money in the vehicle, pay the staff, advertising, etc.
I would expect you would be seeing trade values in and around the $10Ks.
The question becomes, why are you trying to trade in a nearly new car?
Any dealer seeing a private individual trying to trade in a car like that could be thinking: "I wonder how may problems they have had to deal with in order to be trading it in this soon." A lot, or some, people who trade in low mileage almost new cars are doing it because they are frustrated with all the dealer repair visits and constant problems.
How much should I expect in trade-in value on this wrecked vehicle (after repair)?

When you're car shopping with a trade .. always-always-always be shopping the difference figure ..... meaning, your car and "X" amount of bucks .. don't get involved in the taxes or pay-off, thats yours ..... **Difference only** .....
Your *asking" $30,600 .. no calls.? not surprising.! .. because your asking waaaaay too much $$ .... especially when a dealer will *ask* $29,900 and cut that bad boy loose for the first $28/$29 that comes across his desk ....... I kinda doubt they're dropping $27 into the trade, not when they can waddle off to the auction and buy the twin for $25 or less ....... difference my friend -- difference ...............................
If the difference figure works out at in and around $1,600 over dealer invoice (real money) and $27 for your MDX (real money) then you need to be there, cuz' you caught someone in a coma ........ tax savings in Colorado, right ....?
Why is it getting repaired? $11K is already 60% of retail value. We all know how body shop estimates wind up much higher on significant damage wrecks due to hidden damage. Before signing off on the repair, I would get it into a Toyota/Lexus dealer to do a full inspection of the repair.
Any car that had prior frame damage is worth significantly less after the repair. You need to have pictures showing the damage before any repairs were started and provide them to the dealer at trade time so they can see how much work was done.
I don't think anyone can give an accurate estimate of the trade until seeing the repair work and the extent of the damage. In general, take whatever it would have been worth had it not been damaged, and multiply by 75% should give a ballpark figure if it was fixed right.
You will need to pursue a diminished value claim as well with the insurance company as it will be worth less after repair versus not ever having been wrecked.
.............. Yikes .!!! .... $11,0 big ones .......?!?
Anyone hurt ....? ... Did it make it on Carsmack.?
I ain't lookin' at this bad boy .. but I have a funny feelin' you have some frame and a little cut and snip going on here, this dude should have been totaled ...... whats it worth ..?? .. pick a number, somewhere between $8,000 and $13,000 ... not much difference here between yours and any of the 200,000 flooded vehicles from the southern region .....
If the difference figure works out at in and around $1,600 over dealer invoice (real money) and $27 for your MDX (real money) then you need to be there, cuz' you caught someone in a coma ........ tax savings in Colorado, right ....?
Thanks for the advice Terry. Very eye-opening. I feel like I'm pretty realistic on these matters, but apparently was being a bit optimistic on the MDX.
As far as the deal, I sat with the sales manager a few weeks ago on the Sienna/MDX deal, and it did, indeed, come to $27k for the MDX and $1,369 over their invoice (which included some marketing - that's legitimate, isn't it?). The problem was, the Sienna was silver and my wife decided she wants a white one. For an '06 Sienna XLE AWD w/leather & DVD (package #10) at an MSRP of $37.5k, the difference was right around $8k.
Sounds like that was a very fair, if not great, deal. So, the white one comes in in a week or two - hopefully we can get to a similar place. The manager pointed out that with regard to the trade value, the car would, of course, be a month older. So, how much depreciation should I reasonably expect in a month on that MDX?
And, yes, tax savings in CO. So that $27k trade-in seems very good now.
In any case, thanks again - really appreciate it. And I will post an update (hopefully) within the next couple of weeks. Take care!
So Terry - I was a little surprised (pleasantly so) at the high trade-in estimate you provided for the low mileage 05 TSX several posts ago. $23.5k on a car you can buy new for $3k more? Of course, it does only have 3,800 miles on it.
So the TSX's are doing pretty well holding their value? That's good to hear, as that's my daily driver (the MDX is my wife's). Especially since I've been eyeing the new IS and 325's.
I suppose someone is about to tell me to go over to the Chronic Car Buyer's thread now, huh?
Hi Terry, I'm trying to help a friend sell the following car. Retail and trade in values would be of great assistance. Thanks! Location: Louisville, KY Year/Make/Model: 2004 BMW 645Ci Body Style: Coupe Engine: 4.5 V8 Automatic Driveline: RWD Mileage: 12050 Color: Black/Dark Red Major Options: Cold Weather Package, Logic 7 Premium Sound Condition: Flawless Exterior/Interior Tires: 40% worn Brakes:15% worn(if that) Maintenance: All performed by local dealer Other: Sadly, the car suffered significant damage to the doghouse when it t-boned a moron who was running a red light; both air bags deployed. That said, the car drives great-no squeaks/rattles and the quality of the repair work is excellent.
..... These things have to be cleaner than the Board of Health - and twice as sanitary to get any real money ........
It's a good color for the area, the service has to be from yesterday, the seats have to hovered in, ya can't drive into Moms rose garden and put scratches on it and put $1.50 wax on it and it has to glow in the dark ....... this one was used as a test pattern for the Taliban - unfortunately ..........
They all "look" good until a pro puts an eyeball on it and probably an Elco ....
I dunno what to tell ya without seeing it, but I bet I could see the work on it from 800 miles away .. I'm guessing it's on the Bimmer service site and probably Carsmack ..... if it was super clean, a "baby doll" and it needed -0- .. it would be worth in and around the $55/$57 range on a trade .... with 27 pounds of new paint, bondo and funny colored screws and parts .. it might be worth somewhere, a ballpark, a figure in the universe, a number in the area and without seeing it .. maybe "could" might be worth anywhere between $35 and $45 depending on the finish work and who looks at it ... all a dealer is going to do is run it off to the auction and wave bye bye .. so they'll want to be waaaaay back on this broken beauty ............
The best thing to do is "quietly" drop it by the Bimmer dealer and see what they will do - then calculate the Retail figure from there ...... example only: if they drop $40k (real money) into it, then you know to *ask* $49,900 and thats with a full service, a detail from the gods and every piece of paperwork from mile #4 .. then maybe see $47/$48 .... hard for me to put a figure on a vehicle like this without actually seeing it, they have to be puuuuurfect ...... nice cars though, me and the g/f drove an 05 with 2,800 miles on it to the Trent Jones courses last week .. actually, she drove and I slept ........ me personally.? I'm into custom golf carts .............. :P

I'm getting no hits on my '00 Villager at $6,700 asking (and $6k liking and not much less "taking"), so maybe I'm going about this all wrong and the Vibe should go instead.
After 14 days, $6,700 marked down to $6,400, I finally had a guy show up and look at it. He checked it out pretty thoroughly, warts and all, and offered $5,800. At $6 we're remaining friends, he gave me some cash down, and he'll come get it on Monday.
This is the third time I've sold a car in the $5-9 region, and each time I've only had one really interested party, but with the help of Terry, I've been spot on with the value.
This doesn't answer your question, but at $21,500, why not just order a brand new one for $2-$3K more? Even if they came down $2 grand on that used one, is it worth it to buy a 4 y.o. car with 43K miles & no warranty?
Thanks Terry. The owner is a straight-up guy and isn't trying to hide the history of the car. I will say this; I've driven and wrenched on BMWs for over 20 years and I looked the car over thoroughly- the repair work on this car is very, very, good. At any rate, he's going to sell it outright and was wanting to know a fair price to ask. I appreciate your help and insight.

......... that pretty much sums it, especially if it's a vehicle that there is "plenty of" in the market and there is all kinds of incentives and/or rebates, plus they run through the auctions like piazza out of the neighborhood Piazza Hut ...

but at $21,500, why not just order a brand new one for $2-$3K more?
$21,500 asking
Actually, this is exactly what I said... And, sure enough, they went up to the MINI dealer, and priced out a virtually identical model.. $26,300...
So, at $21,500, definitely not a good buy.. But, at $18,500-$19,000.. well.maybe..
But, this one is at the used car dealer just two blocks away from their house... You know how it is, when you have to drive by a car, everyday? :surprise:
Anyway, interested in what the dealer may have in it..

Those are good Rules (Steiner's Laws of Finding a Spouse), & usually I'd defer to Mathias on anything automotive, but here are a few different ideas:
1) You may never find a "good one". Did I say never? I mean, NEVER. Are there other ways to emphasize the concept NEVER???
2) You can have as many as you want, either all at one time (in Utah), or successively (see Larry King). But, "it's gonna cost ya" (as if one wasn't enough!).
3) Mileage: I dunno. I'm betting Ali McGraw is still very hot. Now, my mileage......uummm.....well....
3) Mileage: I dunno. I'm betting Ali McGraw is still very hot. Now, my mileage......uummm.....well....
I wasn't clear enough.
By mileage I was talking about friends who go through multiple girlfriends (or wives) over time. When talking with my buddy's at work, I usually assign names; For instance "Mike's Law" for the guy with the new gf every six months, but none of them stick... that usually drives the point home nicely.

Well ... there's no such thing as "excellent" unless your driving a 05 A8 with 3,300 miles ....... this 01, the miles are looooow for the year, no quattro, you say the service is 100%, no paint by numbers and it's in pretty good shape ... but, we have that darn movin' around thing between the seats and no hydes ....... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, maybe the low/mid $8's if it needs -0- and it glows in the dark ..... ... what kills this puppy is the meat clever, no moo seats, the color is ho-hum and no quattro ..... sounds like you got ---all--- the money from the local dealer ....
These are nice vehicles, but like any sport type sedan the Vast majority of the buyers are lookin' for that auto thang ...

anywhooooooooo .......... it's a Mazda 6 five door hatch V6 with 15k .... the color is pretty good, baby miles, no battles with the blue hairs at K-mart, it's a (oh no.!) handshaker, we got the sport pack, a little spoiler action and some wheels .......... no hits, no runs no errors.? .. no KFC in the back deck and no funny stuff in the ashtrays..? ... if so, then trade side - in and around the mid/tall $13's, might maybe "could" see the low low $14's .......... the lows miles and the V6 giveth, and the handshaker taketh it away ...............

A scan through AutoTrader shows asking local dealer retail prices from $17k to $20k for same year similar miles...are these guys dreaming?
I am the one who has this low mileage TSX...and based on what all of the dealers are wanting on their used TSX's (i.e. same year/same mileage) the trade in price that Terry gave me (In and around mid/high 23's) is right on. It is a given that no car is in "excellent" condition when you trade it in....however, been through this enough times to know I will stand my ground firm and I don't feel that the trade in value is unfair. I mean we are talking about an Acura, not a Hyundai! The dealer has called me back three times....wanting to do a deal....because he knows he can make big $$$ on my trade....I just tell them where there need to be on the price of my trade and as soon as they get there my interest will increase....although it is funny.....the number of phone calls have increased as we get closer to the end of the month??? Well maybe it is not quite so funny! ) I will keep Terry Posted!!! ____________________________________________________________________

Hey don't feel bad, you are part of the great majority on these sport types ......
People buy them - and love, kiss and caress them .. it's that they just can't use them on a daily basis ..... my brother is perfect example and I've posted this many times .... he had to have a "Vette" .. Vette-Vette-Vette, thats all I heard about for a month ... but he wanted to drive one over the weekend .. naah, that wasn't happening ..... so I gave him one on a Monday - he got up early, put his little suit on, picked it up, drove it to work, went on 2/3 sales calls, went to lunch, did 2 more sales calls and on the way home he stopped at the dry cleaners and the store --- and he was Done.! .... if he would have driven' it for the weekend, he would have thought it was the greatest thing invented since Kool-Aid .. driving it and getting in and out, no storage for dry cleaning and finding a place for a cell phone, a laptop and digging for his briefcase 5 times in a day and putting the top on and off "cured" him ..l.o.l........ So, you're just one of many .....
Anyway in Seattle ..... we got this little 00 Z3 auto with the 2.3 .... the miles are waaay loooow for the year - but tall for a Z3, we got the power top, the color is good for anywhere, we got the hydes, bun warmers and new round things ........ if you haven't bounced this off the local Burger King, no curb burners, no slash and burn interior, no Dutch Boys and the service has been 110% ... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $13's, maybe "might" see the low low low low low $14's if it's super nice, not in a hurricane and it needs -0- .........
Me personally ..? ... this might be a winner for Retail Rd .. super detail, all the history and service records glued to your forehead, a Donald Trump Ad that goes as far south as San Fran .. and: $17,495 *asking* and cut this baby loose for the first $16,0/$16,5 ...... .. the auto and low miles are a helper, but the 2.3 is no help ...... properly done it won't last long ....

Car_man suggested I ask your advice on the real-world value of my car. I have a really bad lease on it so I'm trying to figure how much I'll lose if I sell it or trade it in.
Location: Freehold,NJ
Year/Make/Model: 2005 Toyota Highlander w/3rd Row (not Limited)

Major Options: Appearance Package, Cold Weather Package, Leather Seat Package, DRL, moonroof, privacy glass, JBL w/6 CD changer, front and side airbags (these are just the major options -I have most of the options)
Condition:
Flawless Exterior/Interior
Tires: Not sure, probably not much - I've only had it since April - i guess, new
Brakes: Not sure, probably not much - I've only had it since April - i guess, new
Maintenance: All performed by local dealer
As far as giving the "whole" picture for Terry, here it is:
Looking to purchase in Denver:
2006 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD
Dealer's price is $1,369 over invoice. Not the best deal I have seen, but pretty consistent with Carsdirect and other deals I have heard of in this region.
Trading in:
2003 MDX Touring w/DVD Entertainment (no NAV)
Sagebrush pearl (greyish green)/grey leather
35k miles
No other extra accessories or options (just standard Touring goodies)
Good condition in and out - couple of door dings, few minor scratches, garaged, no accidents.
2024 Audi Q8 e-tron - 2017 911 C4S - 2025 BRZ - 2023 A6 Allroad - 2024 Genesis GV60 - 2019 Cayman
On trade, it has the value that any salvage yard would give for the car. ~$200
On private sale, it has about double that amount. ~$400
It is a crashed Neon with salvage title, not much going for a value there.
I would like to know how you managed to keep insurance on it without actually fixing the damage to the vehicle and having it certified repaired after it was called a total loss.
"[..] asking $30,600. Been there for two weeks and no takers."
That sounds loud and clear to me.
Auction side, I finagled to see this:
09/14/05 MILWAUKE Regular $23,500 42,768 Avg DKBLUE 6G A Yes
09/22/05 GTR TMPA Regular $23,600 43,276 Avg RED 6G A Yes
09/30/05 MANHEIM Regular $24,000 43,711 Avg BLACK 6G A Yes
09/28/05 CEN FLA Lease $20,600 49,183 Below SILVER 6G A Yes
So I have a feeling he's telling you the truth.
Personally, even at $27, I'd just step up to a new one or forget the whole affair... I'm thinking you're seeing a bit of the Denver dividend for the mountains + snow you get to deal with in winter.
Not in the business,

With the Sonata, you're considering a new model from a company with a poor reputation for quality. You are likely to need the warranty on the Hyundai.
Of the things you mentioned, the stability control is the only thing I think might give you an advantage, and if I really wanted it, I'd just trade for a 2006 Accord V6.

Very good condition, all dealer maintenance except additional oil changes I did myself
couple of small dings on doors, one each side.

I would like to know if you can give me a real world trade in value for my 2005 PT Cruiser. It is a 4 door Touring model with the following:
automatic
6 disk changer
alloy wheels
electric drivers seat
cruise control
6800 miles
bright silver exterior, slate interior
Everything else is standard for the touring model. It is is perfect condition, no dings, scratches, stains, and still even smell like a new car. The dealer I contacted gave me a line saying that no car is considered in "excellent" condition by a dealer, unless it has never been titled or driven off the lot. So therefor, no one is going to give me kbb or edmunds "excellent" rating price. I know he's bs'ing because I know what he can turn around and sell my car for. Could you please give me your opinion on the value? Thanks

Terry
Terry.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Take care!

Other: Sadly, the car suffered significant damage to the doghouse when it t-boned a moron who was running a red light; both air bags deployed. That said, the car drives great-no squeaks/rattles and the quality of the repair work is excellent.
After 14 days, $6,700 marked down to $6,400, I finally had a guy show up and look at it. He checked it out pretty thoroughly, warts and all, and offered $5,800. At $6 we're remaining friends, he gave me some cash down, and he'll come get it on Monday.

**no car is considered in "excellent" condition by a dealer, unless it has never been titled or driven off the lot .....**
......... that pretty much sums it, especially if it's a vehicle that there is "plenty of" in the market and there is all kinds of incentives and/or rebates, plus they run through the auctions like piazza out of the neighborhood Piazza Hut ...
**I know he's bs'ing because I know what he can turn around and sell my car for.** ....
If I had a dollar for everytime I heard that statement I would printing this from my Villa in southern Spain ...... it's not important what he "might" "maybe" sell your trade for -- if it's so important, travel down Retail Rd, get a super Ad and sell it yourself ----------------- simple.!
I don't have a location on this one, so today you live in Charlotte ...... this is an 05 PT Cruuuuuiser Touring model .... it's got small miles, it's clean, no battles ar Wal-Mart, no overnights at Maaco, we got a power seat, auto, tunes and the color is good for any area ...... trade side, in and around the low/mid $11's, they might get a little spunky and even drop the mid/tall $11's to make a tuff deal, and "maybe" get even nutso and drop the low low low low low low low low $12's in it to blow a unit off the ground thats been sitting there for the last 180 days - maybe .......... what are they offerering you - and whats your payoff ...??
Terry :P
$21,500 asking
Actually, this is exactly what I said... And, sure enough, they went up to the MINI dealer, and priced out a virtually identical model.. $26,300...
So, at $21,500, definitely not a good buy.. But, at $18,500-$19,000.. well.maybe..
But, this one is at the used car dealer just two blocks away from their house... You know how it is, when you have to drive by a car, everyday? :surprise:
Anyway, interested in what the dealer may have in it..

Slap a new fender on a 3/5/6/7 series, have Da'vinci do the paintwork, then have Michelangelo do the buff and finish and your still looking at a vehicle that is worth $3,0/$5,0 less to a Bimmer dealer or auction side - and the higher the market value, the less it is worth .......... what does your friend think it is worth .....?

Asking $21,500.. What do you think they have in this?

Cinci/Nashville area, right ...........?
It's an 02 "S" with 43k .... we have new round things, 6 gears to get home, color is good, prem/sport pack and the slider ..... it's just an average vehicle doing average things, right ...?
$21,500 ..............?!? .. it's an 02, right ........................? .. as in "oh two" .. the year before "oh three" ...?
Where's the dealer at, New Zealand...? ...... CPO.? ..... they might have paid the mid/high $16's, maybe got whacked and dropped the low low low low low $17's in it ... the miles are a little tall and there is bunches of these 02/03's running around with 15/20k ...... figure he went nutty and dropped the loooooooow $17's into it, did some service, did some art work and it "might" hit the table at the high $17's - maybe ...... the market gets weaker the colder and the shorter the days get in your area .... $19ish would be all the $$, especially when someone can buy a "in the wrapper" 20ker for "around" the same and a new one for $5,000ish more on a cold and snowy day in December .....

Pretty much what I thought... definitely someone's commuter car, not a toy..

It only takes one buyer to purchase one vehicle ............ :shades:
Terry.
That's sorta like Steiner's Laws of Finding a Spouse, of which there are three:
1) You only need one good one.
2) You only get to have one.
3) You get no points for mileage.

Now, my mileage......uummm.....well....
cheers, Woody

I wasn't clear enough.
By mileage I was talking about friends who go through multiple girlfriends (or wives) over time. When talking with my buddy's at work, I usually assign names; For instance "Mike's Law" for the guy with the new gf every six months, but none of them stick... that usually drives the point home nicely.

Very good condition, all dealer maintenance except additional oil changes I did myself
couple of small dings on doors, one each side.
Thanks, tcasboy

Good description --- tanks ..............
In the land of Elvis ...... we have a 01 Audi A4 FWD with 50k ... we got the no-sale blue thing going on, it's a handshaker, we got the slider, a little Sports action, it's a handshaker, it's got the blinders and no "moo cow" interior .......
Well ... there's no such thing as "excellent" unless your driving a 05 A8 with 3,300 miles ....... this 01, the miles are looooow for the year, no quattro, you say the service is 100%, no paint by numbers and it's in pretty good shape ... but, we have that darn movin' around thing between the seats and no hydes ....... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, maybe the low/mid $8's if it needs -0- and it glows in the dark ..... ... what kills this puppy is the meat clever, no moo seats, the color is ho-hum and no quattro ..... sounds like you got ---all--- the money from the local dealer ....
These are nice vehicles, but like any sport type sedan the Vast majority of the buyers are lookin' for that auto thang ...

Slowly, but surely I'm getting there ...... don't I remember Columbia getting a ton of flooding and no power after Floyd in 99 ...?
anywhooooooooo .......... it's a Mazda 6 five door hatch V6 with 15k .... the color is pretty good, baby miles, no battles with the blue hairs at K-mart, it's a (oh no.!) handshaker, we got the sport pack, a little spoiler action and some wheels .......... no hits, no runs no errors.? .. no KFC in the back deck and no funny stuff in the ashtrays..? ... if so, then trade side - in and around the mid/tall $13's, might maybe "could" see the low low $14's .......... the lows miles and the V6 giveth, and the handshaker taketh it away ...............

Perhap I need to find another manual shifter like myself to sell it to.
Thanks again.

A scan through AutoTrader shows asking local dealer retail prices from $17k to $20k for same year similar miles...are these guys dreaming?

So Terry - I was a little surprised (pleasantly so) at the high trade-in estimate you provided for the low mileage 05 TSX several posts ago. $23.5k on a car you can buy new for $3k more? Of course, it does only have 3,800 miles on it.
So the TSX's are doing pretty well holding their value? That's good to hear, as that's my daily driver (the MDX is my wife's). Especially since I've been eyeing the new IS and 325's.
I suppose someone is about to tell me to go over to the Chronic Car Buyer's thread now, huh?

Good luck and let me know ...........
Terry :shades:
