I agree with qbrozen to post the asking prices.....it's like trying to judge in a vacuum w/o that.

Which is in the nicest condition? Tires/brakes/shocks condition? Any good indie bmw or volvo shops in your area (or not?)--that could make or break the decision for me.

Is one owner more negotiable than the other? ATBE, I'd go for "the best deal" between the 2.....or....which color do you like best?

Looking to buy a Volvo 2007 S60 2.5T and may trade my car. I have a 2000 S70 SE FWD, white exterior, taupe leather interior, new tires, battery w/129K miles in pristine condition. No dings, no wear, seats all look new w/the exeption of the driver's seat, all maintenance done at Volvo dealerships, majority of miles highway driving. Any idea of "real-time" trade in price?

    Thanks for any help.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
If the bimmer is in good shape, I kinda doubt $7 is gonna do it. They have their friends, and they do look spiffy. That's gotta count for something, whatever the harsh financial realities are.

Just try and find another one...

Not to say that $8,500 or $9,000 would be a "good deal", but I suspect that's what it's gonna take... of course, a new Corolla for $14 would meet the case to admiration...

You are better off selling the car.
The most you would probably get from a dealer is @ $2500.
Car could do $4-5,000 private party if it is REALLY nice.
Obviously, this depends on what part of the country you are in.

Thanks Bill for your response, sorry for not posting more info. Actually I just realized my original post has the wrong mileage.

I purchased the car in Feb-07 for $22K in cash @ 45K miles, it was not certified pre-owned, but close to it. I also purchased an extended warranty. Carfax did not show any issues and I haven't had any since owning it plus I just had the 50K mile check up. I did notice an area on the driver's side door that looks like it was repainted, but other than that it's in very good condition.
Here are the other specs. By the way it's White with beige interior, so I think I'm safe :)

    Audi A6 2003
    Mileage: 51,000
    Engine: V6 2.7 Liter Turbo
    Transmission: 6 Speed Manual
    Drivetrain: Quattro AWD

    Garage Door Opener
    Power Retractable Mirrors
    Heated Front and Rear Seats
    Special Leather Seat Trim
    Power Moonroof
    Rear Ski Bag
    Electrochromatic Exterior Mirror(s)
    Xenon High Intensity Discharge Headlights
    In-dash, 6 CD Changer
    Cassette
    Bose Audio
    Power Driver Seat w/Memory
    6-Speed Manual Transmission
    Electrochromatic Rear View Mirror

If you need anything else let me know. Thanks again.

Never drove one, but I did drive an S4 with that power train. Good heavens, what a car! A real kick in the pants upon acceleration, and surefooted, too.

I had the pleasure of driving in the rain, and with "normal" driving, I could not get any tire unstuck.

I have no clue what it's worth, that's a question for a pro... for an '03, this is a very difficult car to put a value on, since the market for these has got to be less than a hundred buyers, nationwide.

On a private sale, though, one could probably get a lot of tire kickers to waste one's time...

OK... you're not going to like me....

First, thanks for the info! :)

Car is worth, as a trade... 14kish. Probably ask $17,900 and get 16,500+ private party.

That being said, the A6s aren't too bad reliability-wise, and you have a warranty.. why not keep it? It's a MUCH nicer car than a Civic and a LOT more fun to drive.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
They exist.. and they are somewhat rare. It's the one A6 that isn't really hurt by a stick either...
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Theresa,

Volvomax gave you great advice.. clean it up, put it on craigslist for $5,900/bo with a well written ad and grab $4,500 or better.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
You're low on the 528i... I'd gladly pay $7k for that car and I am a dealer. I could get $11k for it in a heartbeat with those miles.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    OK...

Location and pricing on both cars.

528i is overdue for new cooling system at that age tho!

98s do have the more durable engine.

More info and I can shoot you values.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
I drove an automatic version a while back, before I leased my Accord. I believe at that time it was around a $20k car with miles in the mid 30s. I liked it, but it just didn't impress me enough to warrant the purchase.

The dealer actually had us drive a new Passat right after the A6 drive and they certainly felt VERY similar (other than the power, of course).

Heck, if I had known I could find a stick, that might have changed EVERYTHING!

    Thanks to all who responded...

14K, Ouch!! But it's ok, I still like you Bill :)

Believe me I do love this car and enjoy driving it. However after my divorce my income will change significantly. Plus, I don't know where I'll be living or how far away I'll be from the car overnight. I'd rather just cut my losses and start over. I'm not worried though, this is just a temporary set back. A few years up the road, I'll be back here telling everyone what a great deal I got on my next A6!
Thanks so much for your help!
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
But you are talking about an even trade. How does that help you financially?

  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Wow. What a nice car--is there anything it DOESN'T have as options? I can't see any, from your extensive list of expensive options. AND--you have an ext. warranty?? That would help relieve my own audi-out-of-warranty-phobia.

Hell, I'd almost buy it--where are you? Or, can you just keep it? Such a beautiful car, for what it would sell for....it would be different if you were having problems with it.....almost seems a shame to sell it.

Out of warranty A6 2.7T that uses premium fuel vs. a new Honda Civic with a warranty and over 30 MPG using regular..

Depending on the commute, I'll say $200-$300 less per month in fuel and maintenance/repairs..

Those 2.7T engines are sweet... but, not known for being reliable or cheap..

    Just my guess, though..

    You guessed correctly :):)

With the Civic, I'll save on fuel, insurance and maintenance. Maybe I'm being a little too causcious(sp?) looking into the future, but those things I just mentioned add up, plus my A6's 50k mileage and the fact that I'm not the original owner scares me. I was told that the 70k tune up would be around 2k. That's not a problem for me now, but I just don't know what the future holds.

At any rate it's going on the market... I'm in the Union/Middlesex county of NJ if anyone is interested. :)

There's actually a button on the dash that does not work with my model so yes there is an option I don't have :)

I went to a dealer to check on a Freestyle, I have a Taurus wagon, 02.. yes they have taken a beating on trade in and value..hard to figure.. I have 54000 miles and just wanting something newer.. not because of the car.. anyway he points to Kelly's and shows me a screen of around 4500 for tradein.. I go home check the same site and same info, since I had him put it in at the dealership. I put the same and it comes out at 6200! my question is.. does the dealerships have a separate login to get a worse value.. I have seen this discrepancy more than once and I know what I am doing..I don't add a thing more.. :confuse:
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
Was the condition of the vehicle rated the same?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Okay $8,500 if it's a sharp car. Those are low miles (and you'll need 'em). I'm not talking asking prices, I mean real money changing hands. Seems like $8K-9K is the hot spot.

I like the 528i from that period. One of my favorite BMWs. Probably the only one I'd own from 1998.

yes, I can't remember who, but a pro around here once said there is a dealer's Kelly and the free consumer's Kelly, and they don't agree.

man, that is tempting, that's for sure. Again, too bad I have 20 months on my lease. :(

Anyway, if you are too upside-down on the car, an even trade probably won't happen either. I mean, someone has to pay the bill, right? Sooo... if you owe $20k and want a $17k Civic and they give you $15k for the audi, then you are actually paying $22k for the Civic.

that $5k can pay for ALOT of premium fuel!

yes I used same condition.. and everything.. I watched him put in the values a second time... I mentioned edmunds, and nada and he dissed them, probably because of the "education" you can get by reading some of the tips...
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
there are 2 different Kelley services.
One for dealers, and one for consumers.
The consumer site has a built in fudge factor that sometimes isn't even close to the dealer side.

Keep in mind that in either case, Kelley's values merely represent a point to begin talking, not a hard real value.
Depending on the condition of your wagon, location, color etc I think it is probably worth between $4-5,000

Hey... sorry about your lease getting in the way, I know you would have given my "baby" a good home :)

    oops typing to fast

My best offer has been $17,000 and had to do some negotiating to get that.

The two dealers I have talked to claim the new 08 body style and rebates are hurting my trade value.

    Could be.
$17,000 isn't out of the question, but I do think it is a bit low.

    Stop.

Take it to Shawn at Eurosport of Westfield on North ave in Westfield. Don't go NEAR the dealer.

If properly maintained that A6 won't kill ya, and you still have the warranty on it.

Thank-you all in advance for your help and guidance. My sister resides in the New York Metro Area (she lives in Jersey) and would like to know how mucb you think her car would be worth as a trade in. Here's everything I know about the car:

    2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6
    4 Door Sedan
    2.8 L VR6/ 174 horsepower/ 4 speed automatic transmission
    Front Wheel Drive
    61,000 miles
    White Exterior/Beige Leather Interior
    Leather/Heated Seats/Power Moonroof/Power Windows/Power Door Locks/ABS/Traction Control/Dual Front & Side Impact Airbags/16" Alloy Wheels/6 Disc CD Changer

A few minor dings here and there (the car is 7 years old)/Clean interior.

Tires have about 70-75% tread life left. 4 new brakes and rotors were installed just last year. Synthetic Oil Changes.

The car has NEVER been in an accident.

Again, I follow the "Stories From The Sales Frontlines" thread and truly value everyone's opinion. Thanks again for your time!

Should be easy to sell in Philly.

Wait for the first snow fall and price it 15-20% below what you paid new. It'll be gone the first weekend.

    V6 auto 47K miles
    windows,locks,tilt,cruise,air,cd,power seat,keyless,traction control,abs,alloys,spoiler

new ceramic brakes/lifetime warranty rotors (less than a month ago)

    Bill,

I checked with the detail guy about the convert and he wasn't talking the same money that you were. Oh well, I really can't think of anything I'd like to replace it with for 12k.

I have happened on several bmw sedans and wonder which you might recommend. There is an 06 530xi heavily optioned - prem, cold, nav, sport, 18 in rims (I can't remember if these are runflats) , keyless, AT, 15k miles , non CPO , titanium over gray for about $42k.
There is a black over black 530xi 06 with cold and prem, CPO for $40k, 17k miles, AT.
I can get a leftover 07 525xi new titanium over gray but haven't gotten full option list for "under invoice" - dealer says there was manufacturer money that ended last month and they bought the cars and will sell (but not lease thru bmw) these cars. Also had black over terra 530xi new, same deal, but I've not seen the terra in person. Would do the same deal on any leftover 07, but they didn't have much - mainly xi's.

I'm leaning towards 06 or 07 b/c of the poor 08 crash test side impact result - supposedly the redesigned armrest hit the dummy's chest.

I haven't seen too many 06 or 07 530 sport rwd that don't have high miles in my area. Closest dealer, dreyer and reinbold doesn't much like to deal anyway.

Let me know what you think,
    Mark

Jetta sounds like a $5500-6k piece in our market.

Thanks for the usual good description! :)

On a private sale it's probably worth $8,500/bo and take $7500+
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Usual disclaimers apply.. (Paintwork, condition, etc) But I'd think $14k-14,500 trade and ask $16,900 private party.. bear in mind that at 6% tax rate a $14,500 trade-in does save you $870 on taxes.. so youd really want to get $16k for it to be worth your while at a minimum.
