Just curious, but I'll pass any feedback along:

'95 200K mile bmw 540i, white, black int. Was rear-ended, major body work done at bmw dealer, drives great, looks great reportedly. Transmission, sorry, don't remember. Has apparently an "M package" of some sort (?).

She was offered $8K by a mechanic at the bmw dlr. (!) I advised her to take the money, & run like a thief. Even w/o the body repairs, but with??? And those miles? I know Volvomax knows bmw's, or anyone, TIA.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Take the money and run before that guy comes back to his senses.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
good god. maybe the mechanic thinks its 100k? (although $8k would STILL be too much)
man, it may be too late already. he may have sobered up.
Even if real nice and no bad history, that's a $3k vehicle.

No question - sell it yourself. It should bring between 8 and 9 (maybe more if it's nice and has records) on a private party sale. A '99 with a locking diff is very attractive to 4Runner fanatics.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, since the car is in"fair" condition at best, that is exactly the value you will get ;)

Figure the car will trade for $6-7,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Lotta miles on that rig.
    Figure @ $24,000 trade.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
What does that mean? And is there still a fair trade value I can get for my car?

Mattias beat me to it, but it seems like you haven't maintained the car.
So, a "fair"(as opposed to a good) value is all you are likely to get.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I agree with you & BR. I'll try to--pass along the consenus, altho I wasn't making any headway with advising to take the deal before. She's still madly in love with the car; is having some sort of separation anxiety (??).

Where are these people that want to pay double or triple what a car is worth when I'm selling my own used cars? :confuse:
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    I'm thinking $16-17,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Its a $500 car if you trade it.
Get the window fixed, put it on craigslist.
    Should bring $2-3000 easy.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
agree w/ BR, that is WAYYYYY beyond all the money.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Last week we had someone in here who paid 62,000 dollars for a 2004 Range Rover with 60,000 miles on it.

    :surprise:

    We were speechless.

    Good morning,
was toying around w/ purchasing an 04 to 05 bmw 545i... hard to get your finger on these, pricing is all over the board. So, what are these things flying thru the auctions at?

Found one at a local BMW dealership here in Tn...
05 bmw 545i, 36k miles. Darker silver w/ grey interior. seems to be in good typical shape for a 3 yr old car. drives nice during test drive. I'm assuming basic options w/ NO nav...does have heated seats. guy stressed how slow its been multiple times... what would one like this be flipping thru auctions at? They have marked at $33,9 w/ no certification.
What is price difference between 04 and 05's w/ 30k'ish miles?

they actually have the 530i's marked higher than the 545i's... mentioned he can move this car cheaper than the 530's.

    thanks in advance.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Prob looking @ $3-4,000 on a trade.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Not surprising. V8 powered lux sedans have taken a beating recently.

A typical 545i is going over the block between $24-28,000 depending on equipment.
    a 530i isn't much less.
FWIW, I wouldn't buy this car w/out the CPO warranty.
You should have some room to negotiate that in.

    Any help would be appreciated:

    Baltimore County Maryland, 21030
    2006 Jetta GLI

    Turbo 6-Speed Manual
    24,800 miles
    Color: Platinum Gray, black cloth
Extras: 18'' VW Rims, Package #1 sunroof and XM, spoiler

    Condition:
Showroom condition, 1 very small ding
Tires - Brand new <2000 miles, Bridgestone (just spent $800)
    Brakes- fine
Maintenance- all oil changes at dealer

Other: The car was backed into in a parking lot resulting in a new front right fender and new VW rim, all genuine parts, no aftermarket. Car had only 6000 miles when hit so the paint match is great, udetectable to most. (btw I did get $1800 in diminished value just be writing a letter to the insurance company of the guy that hit me)

I am trading this in this week on an Acura RDX
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
and to add to that IMO the 530i is the better car to have.

Much better gas mileage then the V8 for very little performance penalty and will be more reliable too.

That musta been a typo... maybe they meant 6,500?.... I hope?
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
No, not a typo we were talking to them face to face they just got royally shafted.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
What was a reasonable price for it?
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
    Retail less then 25,000.

    Wholesale less then 20,000.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
How is it humanly possible to take advantage of someone to that extent? I always though KBB excellent retail was the "pie in the sky" that represented the upper limit of how badly you could take advantage of a buyer. Where do you even start to pull up a number like that?

Its about $15k trade-in without the damage history.
I'm no good at figuring that into the equation.

I just took it to Carmax first, they offered me $15,000 and they picked up that the fender was replaced due to the "caulk" unser the hood on the seam.

I am headed to Acura now to see what they say, thanks.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
If you got $15,00, thats prob all the money.

Got an internet offer for loaded Lexus, ($39,533 w/ navigation and RES) but will be trading in our van.

    2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L w/NAV & RES
    32800 miles
    Dark Green w/ gray interior
minor dent on passenger sliding door where wife scraped cement pole coming out of bank drive-thru. Taking it to body shop to see what it would cost to fix.
Tires are original, but are in good shape. Will replace if necessary.
All service work done at dealership.
Will be replacing floor mats due to melted crayons. Other than that, everything is in pretty good shape.
Our current lease payoff is around $24,600. I know I won't get that, or probably come close, but our lease (45,000 miler, so we're good for that) does run out in November, so we may run it until the end if we have to.
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks, :cry::cry:

The Acura dealer started out at $14,500 and then moved to $15,000. I also bought the RDX for very close to invoice.

I made a good deal today.

    Thanks

thanks guys.. gives me a decent feel. Appears they have a bit of room on the 545i on their lot.

british rover... I would agree w/ you on gas mileage... but if I were ranking what I want in car, speed and performance come before gas mileage... just as so the gas mileage isn't horrible. I've currently got a G35 and it appears the v8 is roughly on par w/ it. I do not think i would be happy taking a step back in the perceived "performance" department into a 530. I could talk myself into it, but a month down the road I think I would regret... I know, would like the gas mileage, but like i said, performance ranks a little higher personally.

    thanks again.

Private sale number needed (I am looking to buy)

1998 Contour SE. White, auto tranny, 4 cyl. 89,000 miles.

Looked very clean outside. Has the alloy wheels.

Spoke to owner, who said it had been in the family, and just had new tires/brakes/AC refresh/tensioner and belts (might be something else too). Basically lots of the wear and maintenance done.

Never smoked in and no accidents/paintwork (that part I believe).

    Overall, looks nice and clean.

Assuming drives right, what is fair private #? asking price is $2,900, TMV is ~$2,500

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

Unmolested, its probably a $21,000 truck.
    So, deduct for the door.

Since you are upside down, i'd just wait.
There's gonna be deals in Nov when your lease is up.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
I put 29,000 real money on a 2006 LR3 HSE with 15,000 miles on earlier in the month and about 21,000 for a 2005 LR3 with 43,000 miles on it. I figure your car splits the difference at about 25,000.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, britishrover is the guy to give you a real number.
To me, it looks like KBB is smoking crack.
Your truck is bringing mid $20's at the auction.

That particular car I actually sold new and it was sold for 54,000 USD. I think MSRP at the time was around 55,000. That car did have every single option though including the rare heavy duty package with locking rear diff.

That is sobering--losing $25K on a low mileage $54K car in 2 years or less........but some people have "the dough to blow". (My frugal mind instantly starts thinking about the new or used cars one could buy outright just for the depreciation amount on that vehicle.....just glad it wasn't my money.....)......
