Not that this answers your question, but are you buying or selling? If you've got an '09 Honda Fit for sale, I'd sell that privately in a heartbeat!

I have a neighbor that wants to trade it in for a CRV or a Pilot ASAP, because the car (2009 Fit) is terrible in the snow and ice.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
Its not the car, its the tires and/or driver.

She wanted to put studded tires on, but coul'nt find any for that model.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Yeah, even many AWD vehicles are not that great in snow and ice if they don't have Winter tires. I knew someone who skidded into the back of another car in an AWD Subaru on snow, w/the stock summer or "all weather" tires.....

Where are you that people need studded tires? Would not regular snow tires do it?
  • vagabondchefvagabondchef Member Posts: 107
Almost bought a 2009 Fit myself, but was pissed that the sport model did'nt come with traction control, plus the car is way overpriced. The Fit is a car for Southern California. You are better off and money ahead buying an Accord LX Auto.

    Hi All:

Would like a real-world trade in value for the following in Southeastern Louisiana:
    2005 Toyota Matrix
    2WD, Automatic, Base Model
    55,000 miles

    Thanks

Studded tires have been illegal in Illinois for years - I remember helping my father pull them out of a set of snow tires when I was a kid back in the '70s.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
Where the heck do you live?

People were getting around just fine prior to the days of AWD, FWD, traction control, etc, etc. Seriously, your neighbor just needs driving lessons. No car is going to cure the problem.

    @ $13,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Doesn't look like much room, maybe a grand.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Wholesale is probably @ $10-11,000, so the retail price isn't bad.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    @ $10,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Not a lot of feedback for this model.
I'm gonna guess wholesale A@ $15,000 or so.
You might have a grand or so of wiggle room, then again you might not.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Figure $9-10,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Trade in $7-7500

My bud who owns a vending company has bought 3 new Fits into
his fleet. Bought them because he thought he was gonna save some
big bucks on gas and maint. costs............ He sure regrets it now !

Terrible in the snow as well as scary to drive, $1000 brake jobs every
5000 miles, long dealer waits for parts and service etc..............

Hes going back to the bulletproof Chevy full size vans.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
A vending company driving Honda Fits? Does he strap the vending machines on top of the car? Maybe that's why his gas mileage sucks. Vending machines strapped on top don't help the aerodynamics and probably do a number on his brakes too.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
1000.00 brake jobs every 5000.00 miles?

Sorry, I think someone is pulling your leg!

I forgot to metion that it's the Grand sport S - does that make a difference?

    Thanks!

Local dealer in San Diego says my mint 2008 Civic EX auto sedan with 7500 miles is only worth $13500 but Edmunds TMV says $17500,KBB say $18115,NADA $18175,
    so what gives.Why the difference?
  • johnxyzjohnxyz Member Posts: 94
Its a GLS (not the 'W' 6 GLX).

Does this economy kill trade-ins/private sales by 25% or more then even 6 mos or 1 yr ago? (Not counting Fits, Prius', Smartcars or Civics)?

Anyway - let me know what you think is a realistic trade-in as well as a private sale on my '00 Passat. Thanks.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I looked at it as an S
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I think that the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Looks to me like $15,000 is closer to the number.
However, with the price of gas going down, these cars aren't retaining their value like they did.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Probably pretty accurate.

Right now, Honda is offering low finance rates on 2009's which can make a 2008 harder to sell.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
Well, Isell already said it, $1000 brake job is complete BS ... or your buddy is a complete sucker and found the most crooked service department in the country. Even our Pilot (read: a FAR heavier vehicle with bigger and more expensive brakes) went 40k miles on its first set and only cost $600 for all new rotors and pads.

And why would there be a wait for parts, don't these essentially share most parts with the Civic?

Hmmm... wait a sec... $1k brake jobs, long wait for parts, OH, now I get it, your buddy lives in Australia! Hey, that's what you get for buyin' one of them there foreign cars. Tell him that Holden makes an El Camino-like car.

The trouble is, people read things like that and some actually believe it.

I'll probably hear a customer say..." I hear Fits need a 1000.00 brake job every 5000 miles!" Pure rubbish.

I'm very surprised your Pilot needed rotors at 40,000 miles. Never heard of such a thing.

And, no, I don't think Fits share many, if any parts with a Civic. Still, availability isn't a problem at all.
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,296
Well, Isell already said it, $1000 brake job is complete BS

Considering the prices dealerships charge... doesn't sound like BS to me. I went in for an oil change today, the dealership said I needed new brake pads. It was $244 just to turn the rotors and put on new pads (front only).

On the other side of the coin, we have a local franchise called "Brakeway". For $99 they replace all 4 brakes, turn your rotors, and bleed your system... then they bleed your wallet with all the upselling.

    2007 VW GTI.
4 door. Silver. moonroof/sat tunes package
    DSG tranny
18" wheel option (with summer tires, nice for a philly winter!)

only 12K miles on it. Seems pretty clean overall.

at a local new car (non-VW) dealer.

what is a realistic price on this, considering it needs tires for the winter?

  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
well, like i said, our Pilot was $600, and that was at a dealership, and all 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads.

ahhh... wait... come to think of it, I think that was just turning the rotors, not replacing them. So that's still pretty close to your price of $250 for the fronts only.

But, again, this is a Pilot. $1k on a Fit? I can't buy that. And certainly not every 5k miles. Hell, my 3700lb G35 is not even halfway through its pads and I've now driven it nearly 10k miles AND put 9 autoXs on them in addition to an hour on a full track exceeding 100mph.

For a brake job on my 99 CRV it was like $180 and that included new pads, turn the rotors, new brake fluid, and adjust the rear drums. *sigh* I miss that vehicle. Best darn one I ever had.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Whoever wanted snow tires should just buy a set of regular all-season tires, then have them siped. Problem solved.

If someone actually manages to get bad gas mileage and bad traction and bad reliability out of the Fit then they are officially the worst driver on earth.

    Give them an award.

sorry i can't provide a value on the 'Fit', but a lot of cars can start in 2nd gear if you put the shift lever in '2'. this can help reduce wheelspin, if that is the issue.

My wife went compleley thru ALL of the pads in 27,000 miles on her '05 Pilot. Dealer wanted to replace at least 2 rotors (perhaps all 4) and charge more than $500 for the job. Honda wouldn't goodwill any of it.

My son replaced all the pads for less than $60 and left the rotors alone. And there's no problem with them whatsoever now.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Probably not to many of 'em have gone across the block seeing how they've only been out for a couple of months. My guess is at least 3 grand less than whatever the sticker was.

A reporter from a large business magazine would like to speak with consumers or dealers who have come up with different ways to sell their new or used vehicles to make their deal or ad stand out from the rest. (Similar deals that have been used are the “buy one, get one free” promotion or a guy waking around town with a sandwich board advertising his pickup truck). If you found a different way to sell your vehicle, please respond to ctalati@edmunds.com with your daytime contact information no later than Monday, December 8.

Your wife must be a hard driver to go through brakes that quickly or maybe you live in an area with a lot of hills?

Are you sure they didn't want to just resurface the rotors? Unless she went metal to metal, they should be OK.

I have a 2003 Honda CRV (EX/auto/4WD) that was in a collision about a year after I bought it. The damage (about 14K worth!) was all repaired with new Honda parts and it has driven beautifully for the last 4+ years. It has low miles (25K), new tires, and is otherwise pretty clean. How can I expect that previous collision to affect trade-in value? thanks in advance.

you read my mind. The chromes are horrible, but man I dig those blue suede inserts on the seats. :)

99s are nice. Last year before Mazda starting recommending premium fuel, FWIW.

I test drove one way back when, but kept my '93 (which I still have).

    2008 Chevy Malibu LTZ
    4 dr sedan
    V6
    FWD
    4500 miles
Blue exterior / Black & Brick interior
Fully loaded - Sunroof, CD, XM, leather, remote start,

Condition: Excellent, no dings / scratches, interior is flawless...

No prior damage to the vehicle, tires are excellent as well...

Just trying to get a real idea of what this car is worth on a trade right now to a GM dealership...
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
LOL, well, at least she isn't as hard on me as she is on her car. She starts up fast and brakes late - all the time. She goes through gas, tires, and brakes like nobody I know.

The dealer really pissed me off in pushing new rotors because they are ok with no real scoring and still were true.
  • otto8otto8 Member Posts: 116
I figured the "hondas never need repair" crowd would be out in force!
But anyhoo............These are used as route vehicles for like cash outs
and service calls. They use GM full size 2500 pickups with tailgate lifts
or box trucks to move the equipment.
The owner Larry is a toyota fan and has a lexus, land cruiser, and Escalade
for his personal vehicles yet scratches his head why these supposed "trouble
free and cheap to maintain" hondas are racking up big repair bills already!

    Why he didn't try a vibe/matrix twin insted I don't know.

Anyhoo the local Chevy dealer soaked my dad almost $1000 for a front
brake job with rotors, hubs, etc. on his s-10................
