    Car is probably worth $12-13,000

Given that the newer Boxsters are said to have about 55% of their content from the 911, it's interesting that resale hasn't been better. Also, there have been a number of engine failure reports involving 911s, so it'll be interesting to see how well they hold their value as word gets around.
  • longislander1longislander1 Member Posts: 112
I will say this for the Boxster: its handling will match or beat anything that's on the road today. Beyond that, I'm not impressed. I tell people that, for $60,000, it's a very nice $40,000 roadster. You pay an awful lot for that little gold badge on the hood. For me, this Porsche hasn't had the same longstanding appeal as the 968 convertible I owned for 10 years.

So far, maintenance costs have been fairly low because I only drive it about 3,500 miles a year and an annual checkup at the dealer, including oil change, is about $450. But no Porsche is reasonable to own, unless you're comfortable doing your own mechanical work. At the dealer, an oil change is $250 alone. On some of the Porsche forums, we get guys who want to buy one by the skin of their teeth and we tell them that they need to have a sizeable reserve fund for maintenance. There are some great deals to be had on new and used Boxsters right now, but if you have to add $5K for an extended warranty or $14-$20K for a blown engine, they're not really such great deals.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try another Miata (I love them, but still don't fit quite right in the cabin) or wait for a redesigned Honda S2000 or the upcoming Nissan 370Z convertible. I think Japanese is the way to go. I wish Mazda would make an RX-8 roadster.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I probably will end up with another Miata, mostly because I've been happy with mine.

Perhaps I've been lucky but I don't think I've spent $1200 in repairs in the 8 years I've had it, and keep in mind it was already 8 years old when I bought it. And I'm including a timing belt and water pump, which are maintenance, really.

To put that in perspective, I've spent $8.33 per month on average on repairs. On a 16 year old vehicle.

I doubt even a newer Miata will match that rate.

A Porsche would make you extremely happy... but, eventually, it will make you cry....

It is still the greatest car I've ever owned... but, when my child was born, I knew it had to go... and, I was extremely lucky... Probably only spent around $2500-$3000 in the four years that I had it... and this was in the early '90s...

    My budget would tolerate that.

My budget would not tolerate engine replacement, though.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,497
Exactly... but, there are no guarantees.. That was a lot of money for me, then... Plus, $20K to buy the car in the first place... It was the possibilities that moved me to sell it..

    I blame my wife.... :(

I know that this isn't the right place to post this, but I have owned several Porsches. When I gave up D.E.'s and club racing, I was looking for a fun roadster. I was sure that I wanted a Boxster. I drove it and it was "OK", but I wasn't blown away. I decided to test drive the new Miata PRHT. Well....I bought it. Great car and very easy to own. I even put snows on it so I can drive it year round. (and I have other cars to drive)
I paid list price cause it was just out and in demand, but you can get 5k off on an '08 now.
    No regrets here.......

Helping out a co-worker to find out the value of her 2003 Mini Cooper S

    Location: South Central PA

    Color: Grey
    Options: sunroof, navigation system
    Condition
small dent in front quarter panel
    tires: about 50%
    brakes: just replaced

No other accidents that I know of

    Thanks.

For one thing, 911's are rarer.
The target demographic has more disposable income and the car benefits from decades of accolades and great press.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Sounds like a $10,000 car.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Good to know.

Hey, are you selling it? :D

    Just kidding.

New PRHTs are now down to $22k or so, really not bad at all. That's with basic equipment, so they go up near $30k loaded.

I saw one used 2007 for $20k and it was loaded, that was a bargain. I almost jumped on it. It was the right color, trans, had leather seats with heaters, everything. I guess I just chickened out.

I've seen used 2006s as low as $12k or so, but most are $15k.

volvomax - just to get an idea, what to 2006 and 2007 Miata soft tops go for across the auction block?

I'm sure the hard tops are much higher, so what about those? They only came out in 2007 so it's possible not many have hit the auctions.

    Thanks volvomax (and so quick).

i'm assuming this is the trade-in value???

What do you think of the redesigned BMW Z4, which should be out this spring?
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Yeah, that was a trade number. You really should try to move it privately first though as they continue to bring good money.
  • dtownfbdtownfb Member Posts: 2,918
That's what I plan to recommend she do. It should sell pretty quickly for $11k.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
It should sell pretty quickly for $11k.

just take your tax laws into account. If I trade a $10k car in NJ, I basically get credited for $10,700 thanks to the tax credit. So I wouldn't bother private selling if I thought $11k was the limit.

Wondering what my trade-in is really worth. Most of the online sites are clueless about the diesel VW.

    Location: St. Louis, MO
Y/M/M: 2005.5 VW Jetta TDI (this is the "New Jetta" that was introduced mid-year, with the current A5 body style)
    Body Style: 4dr
Engine: 4 cyl turbodiesel, direct-sequential gearbox (DSG) = automated manual transmission; real-world 40 mpg combined average (documented)
    Driveline: FWD

    Condition:
Few very minor dings on the body. Interior is in very good condition.
    Everything works.
Tires - about two years old
Brakes - still good; changed fluid about 6 months ago
Maintenance - all up to date with records
Other: I wrecked the front end when it was 3 months old but it was repaired good as new and been great since. Replaced broken windshield about a year and a half ago. Defective dual-mass flywheel was replaced a couple of months ago under extended warranty.

    Thanks for thoughts!

I've always found the Bangle Z4s, even the latest ones, kind of ugly, although I've been a longtime fan of BMW (had a 525i with stick for nine years -- great car). I'm sure they're good cars under the skin and probably getting closer to Boxster handling. My faith in Bimmers was shaken recently after one friend decided to ditch a fairly new 328xi after thousands of dollars in out-of-warranty engine work and another friend took her convertible to a big dealer here that touts its service, but failed to properly diagnose what was a pretty simple alternator problem. If I was choosing today, I might go with a 330i convertible over the Boxster, even with some sacrifice in handling.
  • longislander1longislander1 Member Posts: 112
I understand how you feel about your Porsche. I felt that way about my '95 968 and thought I had to have something new by buying a Boxster. I would have been better off putting more money into the 968. A lot of people say that Porsche isn't what it used to be. Many of the early to mid-'90s cars were still pretty much hand-built and had that quality feel that you don't get today. Based on my limited comparison between 968 and Boxster, I'd agree. Just for comparison (and to stay relevant with this forum), I sold my 968 for about 45% of what I paid for it after 10 years of ownership. I bet the percentage is close to the same for the Boxster after only 3.5 years of ownership.

I appreciate your thoughts. I have an '01 330i that's been a terrific car & that I will almost certainly keep for at least another year. Still, I'd love to have a roadster, although selling the idea to my wife will be a struggle.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Miata values depend on the miles.
    2006's anywhere from $9-12k
    2007's anywhere from $10-14k
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hard to say. Not many examples to og on.
    Figure somehere in the $14's.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
These are also hard to figure.
Unmolested, I'd say in the $9-10k range on a trade.
Your value depends on the damage, how well it was repaired and the Carfax.
Value could drop a grand or $4 grand easy.

Curious what trade value of the following would be:

1998 BMW 323is coupe. 5-speed. Not sure of (or if) any other options besides the sunroof. Doesn't seem to have the sport seats, unfortunately. OH, its silver over black in NJ.

I'm thinking trade is in the $3k neighborhood. What say the auctions?

    Thanks!

I realize the stick & 4-banger are two big strikes. KBB says $4500 trade-in and that's the offer from one dealer. should I push for more? Edmunds says $7500 (I know...)

i have a kind of vague value question for you, or maybe not, about a car that might or might not be for sale here in central ct.
    gen 3 vw jetta(92-98),
    assumptions are 96-98.
guessing at to mileage to be 150k.
    maintenance up to date.
i think it has sunroof and probably auto trans.
    what i do know:
right now it is sitting in a parking space pretty much covered with snow.
belongs to neighbor of my mother and was garaged until last year.
in the garage is a nissan rogue.
never had an accident as far as i know(about last ten years).
titanium(somewhat yellow silver color), alloy wheels, always clean.
1 kid as a passenger a few years ago.
30 mile round trip commute to work.
i am looking far a fair price for both of us.
if there is some other info that would be a big factor, let me know.
    TIA.

excellent maintenance fully up to date

What kind of trade in value could I expect for this car from a dealer?
Also what's the difference between wholesale and retail price on this car so I can negotiate better.

Can anyone tell me what are the Jan. Northeast auction prices for a 2006 G35x sedan in "above average" condition ?

I cannot afford a $ 22,000. certified car from a Infiniti dealer. A used car dealer said he can get me one if I specify exactly what I am looking for. He would call me if he sees one at a local auction . My price would be what he "pays" for the car plus $1,000 for his services and DMV fees.

I am looking for one of the many 2006 G35x's that are now coming off 3 year leases. Diamond Graphite, Liquid Platinum, or Black Obsidian are desired colors with 30,000 - 36,000 miles. Must have a moonroof.

    Thanks in advance ! I prefer a preowned 2006 G35x than a new 2009 Honda Accord LX.

    Figure somewhere $15,000

The first and only quote I've taken so far, via email after pictures, vin, etc. sent, was $17k from a dealer in south Jersey. Looked at a used ex rental '08 G8 GT on a Chevy dealer lot locally yesterday and they seemed a bit more interested in my Malibu (very "front of the lot" kind of a car), so probably higher but I didn't have them price it yet. Varies from place to place as always.

I am looking to sell my 2000 Lexus RX300.

    Atlanta, GA
    2000 Lexus RX300
    3.0L V6
    Automatic
    2WD
    113,000 miles
    Silver exterior/gray interior
Memory seats, sunroof, leather, 6-disc changer, roof rack, climate control.
Vehicle is in good shape. Minor surface blemishes, nothing inconsistent with the age and looks much better than similar aged vehicles and some newer cars.
Non-smoker. Tires are in good condition.
    Needs nothing mechanically.
Autocheck is showing a minor impact a little over a year ago for a bump to the passenger side. No frame damage.

    What's a fair price?
