Bowke actually the guy was in his early 40's. He didn't care if he made a profit bowke. He just wanted to get rid of it. He told me he could probably get more than what I offered but he decided to take it anyways. Like I said it was a lucky instance and it doesn't happen everyday.
By the way its not common to pick up auction cars at guide book trade in prices that a normal joe can look at such as Edmunds unless the car is in high demand. Usually well below trade in guide book prices. You know that bowke. Show me where dealer black book prices match up to Edmunds trade in values.
Another question: How is it a private person can buy a car at a DEALER only auction unless a dealer bought it for them and resold it to a private buyer at a profit. Now if that happened I can see a private car buyer paying trade in value for a unit from a dealer only auction? Last time I checked only licensed dealers are allowed in Dealer only auctions.
don't get outta hand here. Edmunds numbers for trade-in and private party are typically high, not always, but typically they are high and sometimes give people a false reality. Flip over to "Real-World Trade-in Value" board, read back a few hunderd/thousand posts to see where the same question is answered many times.... I'm going to quote Terry here from earlier today (Terry, you're now a superstar, next I want your autograph!):
"it's hard to say and it's *impossible* for info sources to put a figure on it with words like "good" "fair" "average" without actually seeing it and that all depends on the vehicle, miles, color, geographic area, time of the year, options, your hair color and what you had for dinner on Tuesday ..."
Many things a website can't evaluate that determine the prices, yes, it gives a ballpark idea, but you can't dig a bunker and "shoot" for Edmunds b/c sometimes its just not, to be frank, correct.
My 2 cents, take a look at all the online journals, Edmunds, Kbb, NADA, Black Book... average them out, and usually the realistic, real-world number is typically toward the bottom of the scale. We can all dream about what our vehicles are worth, but you also have to be realistic!
You need to get off of this holdback thing .. especially if the clock has been ticking away and soaking it up .. unless a dealer is getting a Really Nice trade, the dealer isn't going to pay for the financial cost twice - anything after that is just a gamble and we all know how many winners come out of Vegas ...
I do agree with you! But then again when it comes to buying a car off the street most private party sellers normally go off these very guides. In my opinion Edmunds by far is the most accurate if you compare it to your sunday paper. I take Edmunds numbers and look at what people are actually asking for their car for sale. Once I finalize what I am willing to pay I then go take a test drive, and look at the condition of the vehicle. If I feel comfortable with the ride I will always insist on have my mechanic check it out for me for final reassurance. If my mechanic and carfax gives me the go ahead then I will use the Edmunds numbers to make a fair offer to the seller.
........... Man, you are in the tree's ... Take 8 different vehicles - half domestic half import, put some low miles on them and take some preferred options, then use Nada, KBB, then Edmund's .. some will be higher, some will be lower .. then use the same vehicles and drop 80k on those same dudes and you will see a huge discrepancy .. but they will be all different.
The point is, you can't pick on any of them .... where Edmunds is waaay off is in the private sale vs dealer CPO, sometimes as much as $3,0/$4,0 off depending on the vehicle and none of them deduct enough for high mileage and sometimes KBB gets a wild hair and deducts too much ...
if you got it for invoice less rebates I'd say you did okay. Maybe not the longest drive the fairway has ever seen but that wouldn't be bad at all and might let the dealer make a few bucks as well.
Might be in the trees according to you but I am telling you I find Edmunds to be more accurate during private party negotiations then I do any of the others. Again I agree any of these references are only guides not set in stone. Could the car be worth more? Could it be worth less? Sure it could only the crystal ball holds that info. A car is worth what one is willing to pay for it plain and simple. Both you and I know that. My point was private parties use the guides as if they were set in stone most of the time. Its rare to meet a private party seller and he states "well in my opinion this car is worth XXXXX". No he states "well according to NADA, Edmunds, or my bank the car is worth xxxx". So that is why when buying used from private party I always tend to lean towards Edmunds. And yes I do look at other guides as well to see what they state as a backup.
Stop and think about it. Do you really see to many Ford Focas cars driving around? I don't! I personally don't see them as a good investment regardless if you kept it 8 years or not.
I would invest my money on a different make and model. Because today you say you will not sell it but tomorrow you might decide dang I'm just not happy with this car anymore and now your stuck because your phone hasn't rang once after you listed it in the paper.
Then again it might sell in 2 days. Again only the crystal ball hold this kind of info. But if I had to bet my pants on it I wouldn't do it. Just me.
"Do you really see to many Ford Focas cars driving around? I don't!"
dude...the focus is in the top 10 in sales volume each year, and is on car and driver's 10 best for 5 years straight, going on 6. i drive one, and while ford isnt my first choice, the focus is a heck of a car for the dollar.
isell was talking about a "[non-permissible content removed] unit". this is a vehicle with certain OPTIONS that noone wants...not the vehicle itself.
before you talk down on ANY vehicle, please learn how to spell it first.
May be one of the top selling cars but as far as I can see in my area I don't usually see them. They are scarce. Maybe I am missing them. Who knows. I live in one of the top 10 largest cities in the US. Bottom line is to me I would buy a Civic way before I would a Ford Focus. I just don't see wasting money on one. They don't have curb appeal to me like the Honda's do.
I can't hardly believe I'm doing this but your comment "so you, as an informed person, took advantage of an elderly person...sounds like you are no better than car dealers, bill." is misrepresentative, because as Bill pointed out, he never said the sellers were elderly. Just wealthy. If we want Bill to be fair in his statements, the least we can all do is the same, I think.
However, to be honest, I don't care if they ARE elderly, as the informed person, I would like to hear the argument as to why a) paying less than the asking price is taking advantage of someone and b) why it only applies when the seller is elderly? I offer x, they take it, I'm to say "uh, gee, wait, I can't buy it at--I gotta give you asking plus 100 because you're old??"
Tornado finally agreed with me on something. Thanks! I appreciate it.
By the way why do you call yourself tornadoe? Are you from the anywhere within tornadoe alley?
When I lived in Oklahoma I use to chase tornadoes to help collect data for the national storm center down in Norman Oklahoma. Seen some really good ones in my time. Have you heard about the guy in Oklahoma who plans on driving directly into a tornadoe with a special type of car he built? I am not kidding. This guy says he's going to do it this year. I will let you know the outcome if your interested. lol
with all due respect, you just did it again. Bill said that he "lived" in OK, not "lives". Who knows what city he lives in now. If you're going to correct his grammar constantly, which I can appreciate, at least don't jump on him when it's not deserved.
No I don't currently live in OKC. I am not interested in releasing what city I am in. I can just see you guys making muliple phone calls to dealers in this area trying to talk them out of using our reverse auction service. No thanks!
By the way did I mention to you guys that I now have to major credit unions that really likes our reverse auction idea! Their almost excited about it. My marketing director has another appointment to meet with the marketing director and the presidents again next week. If we land these credit unions which both combined are said to be 100,000 member strong I just have a hard time believing you guys wouldn't put a bid in for a chance at some of this business.
And as for using the term investment bowke why can't I use it. If you buy the car at the right price you can turn around and sell it for profit. You guys "invest" in auction cars every week. To me that's a investment. Now if you get $XD$#$ then that would be a expense, money pit, cash-burner!
What the heck, as long as I'm opening my mouth, I might as well go full out.
Bill, could you please at least ATTEMPT to use proper grammar and spelling? There is a spell-check feature right next to the post button that you could use. As just one example, "to major credit unions" should be "two major credit unions". Do you just rush through your posts without paying any attention to detail? I find myself reading your posts twice just to be sure I read them correctly, as incorrect grammar and spelling can be tough to decipher. Work on it a little, and you MIGHT get more respect for your posts.
Bowke, I did read your post. It seemed to assume that he lives in OK at the very least. We can't assume that. Perhaps I'm reading your post incorrectly, in which case I apologize. Hey, it's Friday afternoon, and it's been a LONG day.
With all do respect. Yes I do type very fast and it creates alot of errors. I will slow down and make sure my grammer is correct. But again understand that I have said over and over I am not the best speller in the world. So I will give it my best try for you!
i have no intention of keeping you from making money...noone here wants to sabotage your business venture. we just said...over and over...that WE wouldnt give you a red cent.
i asked to know what metro area you are in because im familiar with most of the major US cities. just curious.
Bill, what I don’t understand is why you are here ALL the time. I thought your reverse auction site is going live in a month. I know that when my systems are a month away from deployment, Edmunds is the last thing on my mind because I am busting my butt 60 to 70 hours a week testing and fixing bugs. I know you are not doing any development, but you should be doing a lot of testing because your customers (i.e. dealers and CUs) will lose confidence in you if you don’t go live on time, or the site is buggy when you do go live.
BTW: What web technology are you using, and how are you financing this little enterprise?
Actually Joe I have been putting in many many hours developing this site. I am a web designer and I have a web designer/ back end programmer that works on the auction code full time as well. We are coding most of it using PHP. As for financing I have 3 equal partners total. The programmer, the dealer marketing rep, and a credit union marketing rep. So if you think about it this setup makes the perfect combination. Everything is working out fine so far. And it looks very promising with the credit unions. Just got a call tonight asking if I want to include their loan forms on my site.
The dealer marketing rep has over 25 years in the auto business. His sole resposibility is to go dealerships around our state and sell the idea to them. So far he has been very successful.
The credit union rep just sold a Honda dealership because he retired and now works as a consultant for the two credit unions that is possibly coming on board with us. His sole responsibility is to bring on as many credit unions as possible. He feels confident that we have landed these "TWO" major credit unions in our area. Once we get going with them we will have him look into more as well.
As for having time here. When I am designing which has been alot lately I always have Edmunds minimized. I can type really fast with alot of mistakes lol. So I come and go when I get bored of designing the site. Kind of gives me a break.
We are looking at running our beta testing sometime around the 1st of June - 21 June to work out any bugs the program might have. Plus we are tieing up a few other loose ends as well.
That '82 Accord.... hatchback..stick.. no air.. not even a right side mirror. MSRP was $7600. And if you were lucky, they would throw in floor mats, IF you paid MSRP.
It was still a great car... drove it for 12 years, 130K and still had the original clutch.
i have a 2003 Focus SE sedan, 7000 miles. on my way home last night, the gas guage read empty, although i had just filled up that morning. as i looked at it wondering what happened, the engine light came on.
i took it in to service last night, and they called me this afternoon saying its done.
turns out that superamerica fuel has been ruining fuel pumps in fords, chryslers, chevys, hondas, toyotas, etc...pretty much everything. there is a news article about how AAA has has triple the fuel calls over the last week, with people reading 1/2 tank but running out.
anyway, they replaced the fuel pump (in under 24 hours, by the way), and all seems fine. they said it might happen again, since i still have the gas in it, but that superamerica will be reimbursing FoMoCo when all is said and done, so they dont mind doing it again.
please let me know if you have issues like this, so we can organize our efforts.
i have a feeling that superamerica is "watering down" their gas...kind of like ballparks do with beer.
know I'm on your side, but I do 10-15 Ford Focus lemon law cases a WEEK, mostly for repeated fuel pump failures (and some other engine management problems)....and we don't have Superamerica stations up here....
and lexington, ky areas only. i just found this out. the local news did a story on it last night, and its not limited to the focus, or fords for that matter.
SuperAmerica is an Ashland Oil station... The same as Speedway.. I'm pretty sure their gas comes out of the same trucks. I doubt this was your problem, but if you think it might be... Start filling up at Shell.
OK.. here's the deal.. I purchased a 04 Mazda Tribute.. I didn't realize my license had expired, but the salesman gave me the keys and I drove it home (1st mistake).. of course when the financing started, it was declined and I was called to return the car.. no problem.. I get there and I want my trade in back.. they said it was blocked in and they couldn"t reach it.. come back in two days..(I'm still in their car).. I come back in two days, my trade-in has been stripped of the speakers, the door is damaged, the side panel removed, the front door window electrical board just smashed. Of course I'm hot.. so the dealer says they'll fix it. I go in their new car.. I try to drop it off again and I'm told, they don't know when it can be fixed and I should keep the car over the weekend. I've never experienced anything like this. All I want is my trade in the condition was in when I dropped it off. Can a dealer damage a car before financing is completed? What are my options? I'm I still bound by this contract? I don't know who to pay, what to do? I'm stumped..
the trade was theirs and a lot boy stole the speakers, I'm thinking - looks like petty theft, plus an attempt to keep the person in the new car in order to shame them into coming up with some more down payment to get bought.
Unscrupulous, for sure, but not my area - in the "dealer fraud" arena, I deal with odometer tampering, selling wrecks without disclosure, selling buybacks without disclosure, and yield spread.
If the dealer can't get the buyer bought, the buyer can make payments to the dealer, I guess, depending on state laws - as a manager, I'd want to keep the miles off the new ride and get the person back into their trade ASAP - beats all I've seen...
......... Ya know, I have read this 3 times and each time it makes less and less sense ...
Let me see if I have this right: your license has expired and the dealer is going to take the risk of you having a fender bender or stopped by the Federales, because your either on a dealer tag/unregistered plate or a 30 day temp tag and then having their new $25,000 vehicle towed away by Smedleys Towing and Surplus co .. Then, take the risk of a Big tow bill and daily storage charges, plus your not approved and they have no contract, so their liable ..
All this because of a blocked vehicle and some missing speakers and $50 bucks of plastic ..?!? .. any dealer on the planet would have had your car moved out and handed you $50 bucks and made an appointment for new speakers ..
Something doesn't add up here .. this is either a "troll" story or a, uhm, uhh, hmm, aahh or a "troll" story ................ ;-)
I can see this getting missed (the expiration date) if the finance person (or whoever looks at it) skims over it. The rest of the story is kinda odd though.
The problem you described is also getting big notice in NW Pennsylvania, my town of Erie specifically. The Attorney Generals office is researching the problem. It was written about in our local paper just last week. No once seems to be able to pin the problem down to a specific source, but many dealers are seeing quite a few folks in with gauge problems and check engine lights. I tend to think you're probably right about "watered down" gas or something of that nature. It's quite wide spread around here.
yes, it was even on the local news friday night. (when i had it happen). no sooner did i get home in the rental, turn on the tube, and there was the story.
My guess is that it isn't an expired license, but most likely credit concerns or problems. You can get an expired license renewed rapidly unless there are other circumstances (DUI, Tickets). My guess is it is either credit issues or we're not getting the real story.....
"By the way why do you call yourself tornadoe? Are you from the anywhere within tornadoe alley?
When I lived in Oklahoma I use to chase tornadoes to help collect data for the national storm center down in Norman Oklahoma."
When I entered college, it was with the intent of obtaining a meteorology degree. Alas, events conspired against me in such a quest (ahem, actually I was just too dumb). However, I still enjoy amateur weather forecasting/storm tracking, etc. I have yet to do any storm chasing, but I think it would be fun. I live in NE WI, so since truly widespread tornadic events are rare, that kind of storm chasing is hard to do. We might get a huge, devasting line of storms, but it's normally high straight-line winds around here.
It's pretty cool that you did work for for the NSSL. The national storm center to which you refer in Norman is the National Severe Storms Laboratory. They do nothing but research how severe storms develop, evolve, etc--with a primary focus on tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center in Kansas City has principal responsibility for issuing Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Watches. Both equally cool, IMO.
Yes I know its called the National Severe Storms Lab. I refer to it sometimes as the National Storm Center because that's what some people call it around here. Just habit. But anyway your absolutely right the lab does focus mainly on Tornadoes. My job was not scientific by no means lol. Wanted to clear that up. When I said I "helped" collect data what I really meant is I drove the van around helping my friend collect data. . He was the expert. As for me I just have a fascination for severe weather. So I traveled with him around Oklahoma chasing tornadoes when ever I had a chance. Its a big adrenilin rush when a tornado changes directions on you and you have to out run it. Had a couple instances of that happening. If you ever get a chance you should really try to chase a few. My buddy now has a service where he drives people around chasing tornadoes for money. He has been booked for about three yrs in a row now. Really has turned into a big business. Once I get out of the service I am thinking about going into business with him full time. Any ways where has everyone gone to? The board really has died in here. Take care.
You will try anything just to prove that I am in Oklahoma. Ok I'll admit I will be traveling back in about a couple of weeks to visit family and friends! I WISH I could move back because it is home for me. As for saying the words around here I grew up much of my life in Oklahoma and I probably said it without thinking when I was talking to tornadoe. But believe what you want to believe. Last time though I am not living in Oklahoma. Its that simple.

According to drift dealers dip into holdback all the time. Is he wrong?
And according to your passage that is the very reason why I would keep the trade negotiation and the new car negotiation seperate.
Hard to answer your question but you need to consider this.
The car that nobody wants today is a car that nobody will want as a used car when you want to sell it someday.
Today's "bargain" will probably become a serious problem later for you.

but that part of the post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.
bill...OK city is not one of the top 10 cities in the states...if you arent talking about ok. city, then please let me know what city.
ford sells just as many focuses as honda does civics.
and your reference to investments is inane. there is no automobile in the world, other than collector cars, that is any type of investment.
please use a different term. expense, money pit, cash-burner, whatever...just not "investment".
Just my 2 cents.

When I said I "helped" collect data what I really meant is I drove the van around helping my friend collect data.

so you ARE in OK!
To somewhat keep it car related- its amazing what vehicles people use for chasing, some use waaaay too nice of a car to take out on a high risk day.

Have you guys noticed a trend? Starting to move a lot of the Sentras and Civics as opposed to Pathfinders and Explorers?
Also, is it possible that manual transmissions will come back in vogue? I'd like to get one, but I've been wary about the hit at trade in time.
