I was wondering if either of you have notice a very slight play when you are at speed and ease up on the acelerator slightly and then acelerate slightly??...It would be in the old time the play in the differential and drive shaft.. I notice this when I am cruising down the highway, just a very slight amount of play Tony
Things are good for me. The car is great. Got raped by the dealer, tho for adding in the XM radio after the car arrived. They charge 15% over retail for the person who handles the details. When I was charged 15% PLUS $400(!), I called to see why I wasn't at least kissed! The 400 is going to be refunded. Well, that's when I found out about the 15% commission this person makes on everything the dealer installs (over and above the regular retail price plus installation). I guess Biener Audi of Great Neck is not unique in this practice, but I have never heard of it at any other car dealer I have ever used!
I didn't mind paying cash for the car...but don't steal from me!
I haven't noticed any play in the driveline, it maybe something I need to listen for. And you're right, I did get a good deal on my car. I saw a W-12 priced at $150k at the dealership last week. GEEZ. But the interior was glitz galore and the thing had 22" wheels. But for all that, I like mine better. Not too overdone like that one was. I do have the piping contrasting on the seats, doors, dash, and panels throughout the car tho.
I'll probably put the W-12 in the garage for now since it has crossed the 1000 miles mark and drive the wife's CLS 55 because she's gone to Amsterdam for 2 MONTHS!!! It's time to party!! And that way my W-12 will be fresh and full of gas when she returns.(lol)
P.S.- You be sure to update us on the facelift procedures.
My father was having a problem with the trunk on his 2004 A8L; when closing, the trunk would come down, stop, and then go back up. He brought it in, and found out that the trunk hinges have a known problem: they are made of two different types of metal, which don't work together very well. One of them tends to bind, which triggers the pinch protection.
They knew of the issue, but Audi didn't send out a letter since not everyone experiences the problem. If you're having a problem getting your trunk to close, this could be the cause. My father's hinges were swapped out under warranty.
It looks beautiful, particularly the right bottom fender and little grill....I sur hope that is your home garage, as you have plenty of room for more cars...In the picture you can see the green pretty good, sort of what they use to call `Bottle Green`...It also looks like you got the sports suspension...Tony ps tomorrow is the big day for me...The car goes to the body shop, and I get to take the train home
Hi you old a6??? Wondering....Took the car in, and the shop is really impressive....Must have had at least two million dollars worth of cars (value) just that I could see..One a8 was hit in the front and had the whole snout off...I took advantage of that to see what was behind the grill...It looked pretty substantual and the alumnum was fairly thich.. Underneath it had alot of quilted aluminum--shiny- I thought it would be pretty soft, but it wasn`t...Hated to then walk away and leave the car....We went over to the showroom =about a block or so away= and looked at the Ferrari`s maybe six or seven- beautiful all- the the Aston Martin, five or six...I didn`t know they were so epensive two hundred thirty thousand or thereabouts for some..Jags, Audi`s, and several more that I can`t remember....An impressive dealership...They also do engine repairs etc on the second floor, so that was nice to find out....We then took the train home..I should say Metromover...I was really delighted to be exposed to what any large city will someday have in their future...It was so conenient, clean, and smooth...I didn`t have to go more than ten miles or so, but I can tell you there are many more train trips in my future..Cost a dollar fifty which is way better than just the parking charges..and way quicker....Man oh Man...Tony
....ag is silver on the periodic table of elements, so the plate refers to ..
"A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty "Hi Yo Silver!" The Lone Ranger. "Hi Yo Silver, away!" With his faithful Indian companion Tonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains, led the fight for law and order in the early west. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. The Lone Ranger rides again!"
I thought the g was a 6....I have been reading the discussion on the ls..I wonder if through lease, if the Mercedes, BMW, Lexus were similarly equipped with accessories and a lease was exactly the same ---what they would choose...I think I would get the Mercedes unless the arches are too big, now on the otherhand if the s8 were to be offered at the same price---no need to guess....Personally from what I have seen I am not fond of the tv screen not being able to be closed....Funny how after alll these years with Lexus that is something I have grown to dislike Tony
This is the first full sized car I have owned. I usually prefer more sporty cars, but so far I am delighted with my choice and my decision to "grow up".
Well you do get fatigued in the sportier cars, particularly on trips over four hours....I use to have an Alante, long ago, and I swear I couldn`t drive much further than Ft Pierce....I was totally beat..Incidentally the Allante was a miserable car...I got hooked on the guarantees, and GM really took a bath trying to fix the leaks etc. That was the time I abandoned ship and got the first Lexus....The Audi is the nicest car that I have owned so I think you are going to be way in front of me with your series of cars....Further I did also think the tag may have had someting to do with your China trip..Hi Ho Silver-- Ha--Tony
What`s going on `Man`...I sure hope you didn`t ride away into the sunset with the `Lone Ranger`....I must admit I admire emass with his witty liscense plate....A characer...There were two brackets supporting the bottom of the bumper that were also damaged, so I will wait til tomorrow to get the car.....on further reflection it`s lucky not more damage was done....A strange thing to happen once in twenty years, and with the new car...Tony
1 more day to wait. That's great news. The W-12 is resting for about another week as I'm smoking the Pirelli's on the CLS 55 into oblivion. This car is a 4-door Mclaren SLR, in my opinion. BUT, for all of it's performance, the Audi still has my heart. I could practically sleep in the thing.
On another note, I don't know if you guys are familiar with the new DVD Transporter 2. The guy was driving an A8 and the way the car was being driven in the movie was nothing short of phenomenal. In the first movie, his car of choice was a 740il. Great car. But no Audi.
On another another note, I got a message on the DIC saying the DRL NEEDS ADJUSTING. So to the dealer I go again. This time it was a short visit. The daytime running lights needed to be pivoted downward. This occured due to my "top-flight" speed test of 155 mph. 20 minutes later, I was out the door with a clean car, again. I guess the car thought that the HID daytime running lights were blinding people, and they didn't come back on until they were adjusted.
In comparison to the Audi, the CLS is beter in what ways, and worse?? I know you are having fun , but I just wondered why your wife went to Amsterdam for such a long time...I find it hard to be away for a month, and just today was reminded to send the estimated tax in to the treasury departmart....Man that`s where all the extra money in my life goes....As my car has the smaller engine, which is quite quick in my world, I just wondered what all the extra power in your car kicks in at...Such as say from twenty mph to fifty, or some combination like that???..It must be exilerating Tony
Audi says that the W-12 goes from 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. I've had my car tested, and it did it in 5 seconds flat. The midrange punch will nail you in your seat at full throttle. I must say that the car is a hot rod in a plain wrapper. Quite a sleeper.
My wife went to Amsterdam for 2 months because she works for DeBeers INTL, the world's most prestiguous precious jewel company. So her business takes her there, most of time at the beginning of the year. Her family's Dutch hertiage is another reason that takes her there because her grandmother still lives tbere, and she's 103 years old!! I'll be going over 1st week of February. She also reports to me that she saw a S 550 in person in Holland, and she was in absolute disgust. This coming from Ms. Mercedes herself
As for the taxes, thank Heavens I made some major purchases this year (112K on a car for one), or else I'd owe the Uncle more than what was owed this year.
This is a copy of a message I posted in another forum:
I picked up my car last month. Love it, but.... I ordered the following items to be installed by the dealer: XM radio, phone cradle and window tinitng. When I picked up my car, there was a one-line charge for a molding package for $2089. I was so excited to get the car that I just paid it. A week later I questioned the breakdown of the charge. More than a week after I asked for the breakdown, I was finally give the following:
XM = $850 including labor Tint = $699 Cradle = $540 including labor (??)
After long and hard complaints, I was rufunded $400. $110 on the XM and $290 on the cradle.
No tax has thusfar been refunded, and I have called about it already. The check came with no explanaion anywhere on it explaining what it is for.
I called my advocate, and while she was very sympathetic, she said there is probably little she can do about my dealer charging (after adjustments) 15% over his regular retail price for adds to a new car. The fact that I was overcharged by at least $400, and then the attempt to cover that up, was not really addressed.
I feel this dealer is crook and will never trust him again.
Has anyone else had (or is having) a similar eperience?
By the way, the dealer is Biener Audi of Great Neck, NY.
I don`t know how quickly my car will get to sixty, but I know it is way quicker than my old car the Lexus, or at least it feels that way....I have no doubt your number is right as that is a powerful engine, with plenty of torque, and the numbers in the magazine just didn`t ring true.. Fascinaing about your wife and her involvement in the gem trade...I know so little about it, therefore I am loath to spend money in that world although at some point I hope to indulge my wife...Sort of stupid buying her a nice car as we know the value is going down, but a nice diamond `as they say forever` As for her report on the S , that is condeming - First hand experience ...Thanks for the report Tony ps `you lucky dog`, and any more details on the diamonds won`t fall on deaf ears.
Sorry you are having this experience....If the dealership is like the one down here in Miami (large) I just wouldn`t know how to approach them...As I reported when I took my car in for the repair, they were very polite and referred me to the people who did repair my car...I didn`t ask them about a loaner or anything, and it turned out I got to see the `mother of all repair shops`` the people are very good and friendly, and the car was repaired immaculately..My only holdup is a small bracket which will be installed next week...They didn`t ask for any money other than the parts deposit, and request I pay when it is finished...I further requested to meet the person who actualy replaced the bumper ect. , and the only problem is I don`t speak Spanish--just a few werds--but I got across my gratitude...In talking with them, thys said that many people just come in and pick their cars up and are rather indifferent...Not a good way to be...I have to up my estimate of the cars they are repairing at one time to maybe four million dollars ...There were four Astons, five Ferrari, numerous Audi, Porsche, RR, Jag, and on and on..I was really surprised they could do mine so quickly..I could have picked it up last Wednesday , but waited for the little bracket...Further it is Friday the thirteenth, so I drove it right back home. Should have known that would be the luck of the day.. Anyway as the world turns, there are good honest people out there, and I sure appreciate them....Tony
Gents, my '06 A8 is 1.5 months old and has developed a rattling somewhere in the sunroof/homelink console area (I think). Usually I am the only person who hears the static-like rattling when going over rough pavement, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I don't like my local dealer, and the dealer I leased the car from -- Livermore Audi -- is 145 miles away.
I have not had this problem-or any other so far...I did hit a tire tread that damaged the right bottom bumper....Do you like the Livermore people?? If so, maybe it is worthwhile to make a special trip to get help...I really think anyone should give some thought to whom they do business with...If the local dealer is poor, I just wouldn`t buy that brand of car period....I wish you luck Tony
.....who is a self proclaimed Audi hater, just plopped down a $50k deposit on a 2007 S8. This coming from a person who told me that I was going to the firey pits down below because I gave an S65 AMG up for a W-12. This from a former DCX engineer. How insane is that?
He took one ride in the W-12, and came away both astonished and confused. Astonished at the power the W-12 put out, and confused because he couldn't believe it's an Audi. He's always ragging on his made-to-order S600 Brauss Edition and saying that it is second to none, yet my S65 blew the doors off of his $200K piece of overpriced MB scrap metal.
So now he's having to stomach all of those bad things that he said about the "lowest premium brand". How can Audi be the lowest premium brand. Because they sell in modest numbers? That's the more reason to by one as it's not the everyday LS 430 or S500. And definetely not techno overloaded like the my 760il was, despite having MMI, which is easier to program and use.
Funny thing is, I used to be one of those guys. Until my daughter got rid of her money-pit SLK and got a S4 Cab last year. Now my sister has S4 Cab too, and she had a SL500. Were still German, but not Munich. Audi produces some of the most reliable, safest, and performance laden cars on the market. Small numbers: I'll take the exclusivity and keep my resale value at the same time.
My new A8 is in process and I was interested in accuracy of delivery. Ordered Nov 16, the production tracker the dealer supplied shows actual out of body shop 1/11 and forecasts end of paintshop 1/16, elevated warehouse end 1/16, assembly shop end 1/17, release to shipment 1/19. Any quess when I could expect delivery in Cleveland, OH. Details - exceptional dealer support and attitude, great dealership - Stoddard - Cleveland. A8 is NorthernBlue-Heated Wheel, Premium Pck, 19" all season, sirius.
RE: My new A8 above post. 19" - we use this car in normal suburban driving in Cleveland four seasons. We also make several winter trip to Western NY state 6-8 per winter for skiing, thru the Lake Erie snow belt and the NY state snow areas. Should I snow tire this car. Any recommendations. My last car BMW 745 REQUIRED snows. My dealer suggest trying the all seasons first. Any thoughts?
For what it`s worth I ordered on last day of August, and car was delivered just before Thanksgiving...Dealer told me three months, and it came a little befor that..I think blkhemi has had some experience in the snow, so I defer to his better judgement on that front..Tony
Man- you guys are goint to town with Audi...I fully agree with you when you question how Audi could be the lowest premium brand...I also find exclusivity( I`m taking your word on the spelling)a nice thing...Further I think Audi does not have a large dealer network therefore less cars are sold, but that doesn`t mean we can`t use our heads and judge for ourselves how good the cars are....I think to make judgements that pay off in the future a person has to project forward and act on that, more than just follow what has been...I`m afraid we are all going to take a beatin as we have a depreciating asset, so we need to enjoy ourselves now....If I could do things differently with what I have, I would get the all leather headliner, but at the time I didn`t think it worth the extra money...The headliner I have is very nice, and I had no car I could compare to, so I did what I did...After seeing a car like yours , I think the leather headliner is very attractive....Your neighbor is stepping up to the plate, so encourage him to really compare your car and make sure he get`s what will be enjoyable....I really have passion for the a8 I own, and that is different than my most previous cars....Of coure I am a little `snake bitten` with the tire accident, so you be careful of things on the road as our cars ride a little lower than I am accustomed to...Tony
Even with Audi's superb quattro AWD, I still put snow tires on for added security. I've got the W-12 with 20" wheels. Let me tell you, finding 19 and 20" snow tires is next to impossible. So I ordered a set of 17" from the Audi dealership for the A8 and got the tires from tirerack.com
The traction was instant. No grunting or digging for traction. A month ago, I drove from Oyster Bay to Kennebunkport, Maine in the middle of a snow storm and the Audi was doing better than some 4WD SUV's.
Maybe not, if and only if you get the same exact size tire that's on the car now. Because of the low-profile type tire, you'll be hard pressed to get the exact tire. But it isn't impossible. Takes a lot of Internet research.
So if I find 19" this late in the season any issues with just mounting them on the same rims as the all season and just changing tires each season. Anything magic about the 19" rims?
Audi NA earlier today in regards to the headlight problem a couple of weeks ago. It seems that the higher-ups there was none to happy that a $112,000 car was in for a service that should have never occured. I tried to explain to the lady that I know things happen and that the service department was hands down the best I've ever experienced in the luxury car biz, and I've owned every single nameplate.
So here's what they offered me. FREE SERVICE FOR AN EXTRA 7 YEARS OR 100,000 MILES!!!! My friends, it doesn't get any better than this. She also repeatedly apologized for any inconveince that my have occured. I told her that I had a blast driving the loaner A4/S4 and that the dealership took extremely good care of my car.
Audi, if you're reading this, you have earned a place in my garage for many years or as long as the BIG GUY upstairs allows.:) Tony P, what's the A8 looking like since the facelift? Emauss, give your new A8 a rest and tell us what's going on.
You have been on an amazing run so far this year, and I hope it just goes on and on.. On my car, I went back and had the little bracket finished up...Most of the really expensive cars I saw a week ago were repaired and gone...The new batch was coming in, and a Ferrari needed a new quarter panel, and I think just the part was above five thousand dollars...I went out and looked at the car and I couldn`t see anything wrong until I went on the other side of the car..Surprise...My car is as new, with the very bottom of the bumper peplaced, along with the grill inset...I looked at it very closely and every seam was exactly where it should be.. I notice down here in Miami there are way more luxury European cars than any others , and really alot of Audis..For some reason Lexus is very scarce, where as up in SouthCarolina Lexus rules the roost, and Audi`s are almost non existant....Just guessing that Miami is Spanish , and Charleston is English. Tony ps where are you emass?
Things are going very will with the car and all. Very busy at work...and my bathroom is in day 20 of a renovation. Granddaughter (one and only) just learned to climb out of her crib....and all is well with the world.
I am now tempted to hope a headlight goes out, that is the way Lexus treated me in the past a long time ago...I sure hope Audi goes the same way..It will then really pay off for them in the future, as the only way I would have traded cars is that Lexus didn`t have the new model...Now if Audi treats me well, Lexus will have some competition the next go around...Tony
Exactly what does this TLA (LPB) mean? I have just read some recent posts here (I usually participate on LPS forum) and LPB = Audi caught me completely off guard.
Is this something that relates somehow to Audi's US (or overall NA) sales in units or dollars?
Or is it a suggestion that Audis are "the lowest price" in the class (well, maybe, but I don't think so)?
The new S8 (and S6, too) ought to impress anyone looking in this price class -- it "ought" to garner respect even if the prospective customer spends money elsewhere.
Maybe I should go back, way back, and read several hundred posts to see the origin of said concept.
In the mean time, if you would, if you know or think you know, please share what in the wide wide world of sports would make someone think LPB.
I'll not be looking for a V10 anything (I am pleased with my 3.2 V6 A6) for some time, but were I in the market for a High End Premium Sport Lux car, the new S8 would have to be in the top two choices. And, despite all the bla bla bla about a BMW 7 series, the S8's AWD system makes the 7 seem all the more impractical (anywhere, not just here in SW Ohio.)
I think they are just misinformed, or being argumentative...I sure have enjoyed your posts elsewhere, and consider you right along with Merc as the best....Merc is number one for me, , so this is about the highest I can go for yourself...I have read your reasoning for the 6, but you being such an avid car man, I would think the 4.2 engine would have done you proud....By driving around eighty mph I get pretty good milage ,,26 or better if I don`t get stuck in traffic, and if my instruments are accurate...They may not be--or so I have read..I would love the s8, but I (at this time)reallly have to draw the line somewhere...I to get to drive my wife`s bmw-station wagon with all wheel --on occasion, and I kinw it is more evenly balanced, but for the life of me I can`t tell the difference....I think the weight overall of the bmw is the thing that contributes to its sportiness...Tony
Today when i went to get the car, and after starting up, the tire pressure warning popped up...What a surprise--down five pounds....Searched around for a tire repair spot, and lo and behold a roof nail ..Plugged it..The question is ```Is that ok to do?```Tony
Please go outside and see if you can rock your car with it in park...Today while they were fixing the nail, I noticed the car move while it was in park, and think that may be the motion when I am at cruse...It rocked maybe an inch or two....Tony
"Plugging" the tire may be a good thing if it didn't puncture the groove of the tire. It proves difficult to assure safety if it punctured this way. What size wheels do you have? If 17's or 18's, then you nay get away with it. My 20's with the ultra-low profile tires would explode if even attempted to plug them.
As for the rocking, without the e-brake up, I can move it foward. I thought that was pretty weird seeing how this is an AWD car. But I can also rock my 4WD pick-ups and SUV's also.
"Plugged it..The question is ```Is that ok to do?```Tony "
No!! Plugs by themselves sometimes leak, and usually sometime down the road when you can least afford the downtime. You need to add a patch on the inside.
BTW, A combo plug/patch is the only approved method by the tire manufacturers.
I have the sport suspension with the 19`` wheel and all season tires by Perelli....The roofing nail went in between two grooves in the middle of the tire..The gentleman put a drill like router to enlarge the hole so the plug could go in...It looked like it was a good job, BUT I wonder....It would seem as though a patch and a plug wouldn`t work, as the plug would put a hole in the patch...
I have never really rocked my previous cars, so when the tire man pushed on the tire , and the car rocked as it did, it was maybe a lead as to what I think is slack in the drive to differential...In the old days it could be a worn out joint or two....Any additional thoughts?? Tony ps I came back to S. C for a week and the car is down there, so I won`t be able to follow through for a week or so...Hope the tire is holding air..

Inquiring mind. . . :confuse:
As for the rocking, without the e-brake up, I can move it foward. I thought that was pretty weird seeing how this is an AWD car. But I can also rock my 4WD pick-ups and SUV's also.
No!! Plugs by themselves sometimes leak, and usually sometime down the road when you can least afford the downtime. You need to add a patch on the inside.
BTW, A combo plug/patch is the only approved method by the tire manufacturers.
