I want to say Cadillac Eldorado, but I'm probably way off base. I have no idea whether that car was ever associated with "fame and fortune," but it seemed rather glamorous in its early years. It also underwent some serious changes in the '80s which, as I recall, were not looked upon favorably.

I'm with boomchek -- Cadillac Cimarron
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Cimarron it is! Yes, the hints were a tad vague, but it made you think, right? :P

Sometimes called "A Chevrolet with 40 lbs of sound-deadening material"
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
When the war finally ended, I got the steel
So I had to come up with futuristic appeal
I looked so bizarre, I hardly seemed real

My competitors were stuck in their old fashioned ways
By material shortage and a bad styling faze
But soon the Big Three had numbered my days.

    Who Am I?

    Make AND Year!!
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
The make is a Kaiser but I don't have the year - maybe 1946?
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
That's a really good gues except for the futuristic part. Mr. Kaiser INTENDED to put out a futuristic car (front wheel drive, etc) but ended up marketing a very ordinary automobile.

So, no, not the right answer but a good answer. :)

NOTE: By futuristic, I mean comments made AT THAT TIME by the press and public. Our modern eyes might not even notice styling cues which were highly controversial at the time they were introduced.

    I'll guess 1948 Tucker Torpedo

  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I would say "right answer" except that I do not believe, from a historical perspective, that the Big Three engineered Preston Tucker's demise. Preston Tucker engineered his own demise. He was way too small a fish for the Big Three to care. Also, Tucker came and went in a flash--the car was not ground down by the D3.

So I have another car in mind that is a "right-er answer". :P

Okay BIG HINT: It was called the "Which Way Is It Going" car!
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Studebaker?

I'm not sure of the year but I want to say 1950?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
47-48 would be accurate enough but we probably all remember the 1950 model the easiest! Good work!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
In 1951 my maternal grandfather wanted to buy a Studebaker. My grandmother said something to the effect that if that car stayed at their house, she wouldn't :shades: He eventually bought one of the new 1952 Fords instead.

Fast forward to ca. 1985, and my dad was eyeing an AMC Eagle or a Colt Vista 4x4. My mother repeated history and said something to the effect that if one of those was in the driveway, her car would not be. Sadly, she was OK with the S-10 Blazer he bought.

I was born way ahead of my time
My powertrain was a groundbreak design
My clients could lease me for a short term
Much respect I did never earn
Finally my parents crushed all of us
But under a different name I'll be reborn at last

Impact, or Saturn EV1 as it was marketed.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Wow, that was quick. Yes it was the EV1. I saw one at Petersen Automotive Museum but never one on the road, well maybe once in California.

I wonder if one of the leasees actually kept one and just not returned it (could have claimed it was stolen or fell off the bridge into the ocean or something), whether GM would go after them to try to recover the vehicle somehow.

Maybe there are a handful of examples hidden somehwere. :confuse:

I think WWU down in Bellingham was somehow able to keep one for their vehicle engineering department. I have seen it before. I know once GM was very upset and was really trying to get it back, but they couldn't.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    You could get 55mpg
    From little old me
But after a slow sprint around town
You may prefer taking the DC subway (*) downtown
Mileage was my claim to fame
But they kept changing my name

    * - hint
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
I wonder to what extent GM would go to try and get back every one last unit? Lawsuits, bailiffs, repo men?

I think other than hard core greenies, techies, or auto uffs or historians, as seen in the documentary, most people don't really care if there are any remainig units out there.

    HAH I get it!!!

The Geo Metro XFi 89-94 with the 1L 3 cylinder engine.

With subway being a hint for Metro

Yep, AKA Chevy Sprint Metro AKA Geo Metro AKA Chevy Sprint.

I had a Chevy Sprint for a while, not the Metro model. Mine only had 48hp.

    It was quick downhill! :D

A concept car I became at first
My gigantic motor was very high thirst
Into production I was fast tracked
And on the track I fiercely attacked
Had a lousy cloth top and scalding exhaust
If you couldn't handle me, you'll just hit a post
My big potent motor for a time you could get
As an option in trucks, don't you forget!

    Dodge Viper.

Help me out with the first year... :confuse:

    90 something.

Oh baby I hear the voices calling
    Tossed salad, and scrambled...Viper parts.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
There was an EV1 in the Smithsonian a few years back, but I believe it's gone now.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
EVERYBODY wrecks their Viper sooner or later. All you have to do is go into a corner too "hot", then panic a little, let off the gas abruptly----and you and your Viper are toast.

    It's an animal.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
I think GM tried some kind of legal action, but it was rejected.

I can't see why GM would fight so hard to get those things back, and I have to wonder how much money they wasted in doing so. What a ridiculously managed corporation

One of my sales managers said that when the Viper coupe first came out, a bunch of dealership general managers (they drove them as their demos) got killed in them that year because they had no clue on how to control them.

Well technically because they were leases, GM was still the owner of all of the units. But yeah they should have sold them to whoever wanted them except they would have to have support for parts, which I think were unique to these models.

I am considered to be the sexiest sports car
From the 70s and I come from afar
I have eyelashes and I'm low as can be
    I'm fast and expensive
    Do you know me?

    Some people think I'm elegant
    But Shifty says "just fat"
I'm more nimble than an elephant,
But it took Stirling Moss to do that

My small sibling was the Germans' curse
It won Le Mans free and clear
But me, I was a silk purse
Made out of a large sow's ear.

I'm thinking Jaguar but I don't know enough to say a year and model. E-type perhaps.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
    Gotta be a Benz.

I know they just came out with the Stirling Moss edition SL.

    yep, exactly.

    Okay, I'll cough it up.

Jaguar Mark VII sedan, 1951--1956, winner of the Monte Carlo Rally (hard as that is to believe) in 1956, driven by Ronnie Adams & Frank Biggar.

I know Moss raced them but it was a different rally of some note.

it is hard to believe I know, but it really happened. Maybe all the other cars crashed?

Actually these types of races are more about the drivers and about endurance, than actual handling or speed. Jaguar engines of those days were very sturdy.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    That only lasted 12 minutes.

    Mine are too easy.

I'm trying to pick less well known, obscure cars, but I guess I give out too many clues. I just want to narrow it down enough that there is only one correct answer.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
I was thinking 420 and its prettier sibling the Mark II

Fintails came in 1-2-3 at Monte Carlo in 1960 and won a ton of other races....maybe weird things just happened then.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
They were weird things happening. In 1961, Panhard won 1-2-3. Now THAT'S weird.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Not a car but a person.

Probably the most respected of all time who worked for a well known car magazine.

He tested cars and answered questions in a monthly magazine

I know our host knows so you can't play unless the others don't know.

He was around from at least the early 50's until he passed away in the mid 70's.

A real legend with very strong opinions.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I think I may know this one too. One of the "popular" magazines? Back then they were full of smoking ads.

Oh wait, you said car magazine.

    Hmmmm.
