I think that window safety feature responds to a bodily appendage's obstruction by falling off its track and down into the door. I've read a bunch of posts about that safety feature here and on the Jetta Problems discussion. Of course, there's a built-in audible warning to the would-be amputee -- the window has a special, built-in, Volkswagen-patented "Rattle Annunciator" to call the user's undivided attention to the window area. A similar warning device is employed in the dash area to call the occupants' attention to the air bags and other safety features that would go unnoticed without the patented "Rattle Annunciators" to call attention to normally disregarded areas of the dash, doors, vents, etc. Similarly, the breakaway glove box handle is designed to save the user's fingers if they put too much pressure on it -- if, for instance, they mistakenly attempt to open the glove box door when it's already open. The technology of the patented Pinch-Pruf (TM) power window controls is going to be utilized in next year's Jetta, the STP (Safety Top Priority) model. This model will also have Pinch-Pruf (TM) doors that automatically reopen if you close them on yourself, a Pinch-Pruf (TM) hood that reopens if you slam your hand in it, and Pinch-Pruf (TM) tires that will place the car in reverse if you roll over your child accidentally.

How many have you been to? Better yet, how many have you yourself organized?

Actually, why are we discussing this anyway? I was making a point that the lowly Protege has meets like this. EVERYONE expects the high-tech, sporty, top-of-the-line-economy car Jetta to have a cult following of devotees. So actually, your comparison shows that the two cars have something in common -- which I firmly believe was the last thing in the world you wanted to illustrate with that remark.

None yet (the two fests), since I am a former Toyota owner who has organized Camry (the bland car every non-Toyota owner makes fun of)meets before my switching to the VW's. I've been to many and organized a couple of meets for VW's.

Do you want a cookie or something for organizing meets?

Give me your address and I'll mail you a box of cookies. What you do in your spare time (besides bashing the Jetta owners) is not my business.

(and I looked at the Protege problems board....it's no crown jewel of reliability either....you can say the same for the 02 Camry.)

"...Civic 2dr coupe out rates the Jetta w/ SAB..."

    SAB???
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
    >> thought we established that the both the Civic and the Subaru Impreza both got the highest ratings possible from the NHTSA (IIRC). I think they can at least match the Jetta in terms of safety.<<

That's for front impact and the Jetta also gets a 5 star. I'm talking side impact. I've driven the current Civic and Imprezza. Neither one felt substantial or safe in regard to a side impact. Furthermore, neither one has any luxury.

BTw, where's the Pro rate? As we all are pretty much in agreement about the banality of the civic, it's uesless bringing it up. At least the pro has some zest!

They might melt on your heated seats on the trip home from the store.

I guess the Jetta would make a great Pizza Hut delivery vehicle -- those seats will keep the pizzas warm in transit!

What do you have against luxury items? I live in an area where the average temp is like 72 but I'll tell ya what, on a nice cold evening, I love riding in cars with the windows/sunroof open, seat heaters going. Cold air rushing around, warm back/butt.

"Drivers Wanted" is part of VW marketing. After seeing how inadequate Mazda Protege owners feel when discussing the Jetta it only seems appropriate that Mazda must adopt "Jetta Wanted" for Protege marketing. Perhaps a charity fund should be established to enable a pitiful few Protege owners to upgrade to Jetta.
Jetta offers choices of more HP, more mileage, more luxury, higher resale, etc..
Meade- Sorry to hear that you have to drive a 76 Maverick. Is your Protege in the shop or is a 76 Maverick preferred to Protege?

    What?

    Zoom-Zoom?
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
hell yeah, that's the best! (can i say hell?)

i use the seat heaters instead of the regular heater--i prefer that heat to hot, dry air blowing all over the place.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
The Pro doesn't rate as high in frontal collisions.

Also, I don't know why thes organizations don't test side impact collisions.

    BTW, SAB=Side air bags.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Let's talk to Vocus about time in the shop. My Protege has NEVER spent time in the shop in 39,000 miles. And I don't envy Jettas; I think I'd established that already. Keep up; the debates more fun if you actually read the posts.

BTW, I haven't seen any Jetta commercials lately. I do, however, see a lot of Protege "zoom zoom" commercials. And Mazda doesn't have to beg for buyers like VW does. "Drivers Wanted?" How about taking out classifieds too?

Well, you can all breathe a sigh of relief now. I'm logging off and heading out the door, not to return until Monday. Have fun with your Jettas; I know I'll be having a great time zooming home from work even though it is 97 outside right now!

No hard feelings anyone, OK? If we all came from the same cookie cutter, this world would be a boring place and every last one of us would have a Civic in our driveway!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!

    ;-)

    Peace,

    Meadeball

P.S. One last thing -- I have my own seat-heating device. It's large, round, and soft to the touch, and works best after a couple beef'n'bean burritos from Taco Bell. Bye!

    What?

    Zoom-Zoom?

Mazda's website doesn't consider the Jetta as a direct competitor.

no were not all in agreement. civic equates to protege (what zest, isn't that a cheap soap!) and they are both good economy cars. jetta is more comparable to an acccord in terms of smoothness and refinenment. until the 626 is replaced, even this car isn't at the level of jetta goodness.

newcar: i guess there will be no truce, but i'm having fun with this. i think you are too.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
    My Protege blah blah blah...

you do realize your Protege is not the general consensus of its reliability.

You bring up vocus...he's not the general consensus of VW reliability.

If the Protege is so reliable, there wouldn't be a need for a Protege problems section in Maintenance and Repair.

Every car is going to have its problems. It's not a hard concept to understand.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
And Jetta does not necessarily =smooth and refined...ask all of those who have broken window regulators, rattles, etc. You can put a sheep in wolf's clothing, but it's still a sheep.
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
man, i'm going to vw vortex. they don't talk about the protege there....
  • yooper53yooper53 Member Posts: 286
DEALER WASHES Roger that! "fund raising" car washes..A couple times when I felt it was a good cause I drove up, paid for the car wash and drove away. Talk about strange looks! :o)
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Here's some Jetta talk. My gf finally got her '91 GL back from her sister...they have to split it for the summer (2 months apiece).

Anyway, it runs pretty good for an 11 year old car and still gets pretty good gas mileage. I'm planning on giving it a really good wash and wax and making it look as good as it can (the paint's been fairly neglected).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
What the hell happend in this topic since 9am when I checked it last? I just got burned from all these flames.. :)

The heated seats are VERY good when you have a bad back, like I do (permanent damage from a car accident in 1998). I turn them on when I get stiff from driving, and it takes the stiffness right out of my muscles. Can't do that in any Protege (I know, I have driven 3 for extended periods).

And why are we having this fight anyway? Who cares if some say the Protege handles better or the VW has a better interior. Everyone knows what they liked enough to buy when they drive it. That is all that should matter.

There is enough hatred and fighting out there, so why add more in the form of all this crap?
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
"Every car is going to have its problems. It's not a hard concept to understand."

Ah, the Jetta owner's favorite phrase. Every car is going to have problems. That has to be the million-th time that phrase has been uttered on this board. Guess what? Every car has 4 wheels. Every car has some sort of engine. Every car has seats. Every car has windows. According to your logic, every car must be the same right? The HALF truth is that every car may experience problems. The TRUTH is that some cars are more prone to having problems than others. "It's not a hard concept to understand."
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
can we PLEASE STOP THIS! It's getting really annoying.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
All cars do have problems though. Although the Protege has less problems (statistically) than the Jetta does, they still have problems.

I had problems with my Protege that no one else had when I owned it. It happens to everyone.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Todd's post didn't say anything to do with any other cars. It was directly posted in regards to the Jetta. If you're saying stop saying anything negative about the Jetta, then that's not possible in a public forum because this isn't the "Happy Jetta Owner's forum". It's a general forum. Take the good with the bad.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249

No way. A) A civic has no soul while the pro is at least a fun, tossable car. B) The jetta is only in price anything like an accord. That's it. If you're crossshopping Accords and Jettas you're gonna end up with an Accord/Camry because obviously you're not desirous of fun or near-luxury.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
Sorry to burst the poor little Protege's bubble but i test drove that thing compared to my current Jetta and I have to say, it is NOT "BMW verve for half the price." What u get is half the handling, half the space, half the horsepower, half refinement, half of everything. Sorry but too many halfs for me. You people have to realize that magazine reviews are movtivated by the number $$$ a company poors into the magazine lap for advertisements. In Protege's case, it's owned for Ford and they spend way more than VW. That's why they got first place. I would take a Jetta 1.8T over a regular Protege any day.
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
Just you Paul....LOL. We just have to kid ya! I can see car makers now with your poster on their wall. "Beware Paul!"

The surgeon general reports that 99 out of 100 interviewed had no problems with the car. The other one was Paul.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
"In Protege's case, it's owned for Ford and they spend way more than VW. That's why they got first place."

Is that really how it works? Funny how I don't see many GM vehicles getting first place in comparisons, yet they are the biggest car company in the world with the most money. Would you care to explain that to me?
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
The 1.8t engine ownz all of you. Remember that!
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
That is a great engine. No disagreements here. LOL....0wNz....ROFL!!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I just drove the Jetta for the first time today since I put it in the shop 2 weeks ago. I was all ready to tell them to take that car and gimme my money back. With one drive, I remembered why I opted to get the car. Smooth, powerful engine. Comforts galore. Great (Monsoon) stereo. If I would decide to get another car (that's if they would buy this one back), it would be extremely hard for me to find a car I like as much as the 1.8T Jetta I have now.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
When did this become the Protege vs. Jetta room? Isn't there another forum for that? Can we possibly use that one for this crap?
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
so, it's fixed now? or are you still going to try with the lemon law thing?

every day i get in my car and think, i love my car. i haven't done that with any other car i've driven. this is the first car i've had that i enjoy as opposed to just using to get from point a to point b.
  • bpibpi Member Posts: 120
How much did Ford spend to have magazines (in some cases) rate the Protege higher than the Focus?

"The VW spec is 87 lb-ft for the lug nuts. Much higher than Toyota's 60 lb-ft spec. So the lug nuts tightness is not a defect, if CR bothered with checking the owner's manual of the Jetta wagon."
Well, if you bother to read the magazine, you would know that CR always checks the owner's manual as well as the shop manual. Unlike car magazines that get their test cars directly from the manufacturer that may have been hand-picked (probably a waste of time for some makes), CR buys their own test cars, carefully breaks them in and makes sure the cars are in spec (wheel alignment, tire balance, engine specs etc.) No, I doubt having X number of rattles or less per vehicle is part of the spec of any vehicle.LOL
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
No, the car is not fixed right. They refuse to work on it anymore, saying it "operates within manufacturer's specs". So we will see how close it operates to manufacturer's specs when my lawyer (who I have a 4pm appointment with today) gets done talking with them.

I cannot believe you guys made me & your fellow town-hallers (who may actually be interested in discussing the Jetta) wade through the steaming pile of garbage that is most of the past 70 posts.

This is NOT the WWF. We do not have knock-down, drag outs that are like unto "my dad can beat up your dad." NO, there is not another room you can use for this on Edmunds.com. If you'd like to discuss the relative merits in a civilized fashion, be our guest to head over to the comparisons board.

If it weren't such a waste of my host time, I'd go back and delete most of the past 70 posts that popped up during my 3 hour absence from this topic. But it is.

"...All cars do have problems though."

I had a 1992 Civic DX which had no problems before 100,000 other than wear stuff like brakes and muffler at over 60,000.

Still had original clutch when I sold last year at 141,000 miles.

"No way. A) A civic has no soul while the pro is at least a fun, tossable car."

That's funny. I was just thinking how fun and tossable my Civic was. It was LOTS of fun!

Enough with the protege talk!!!!! The "Pro" was not even mentioned in the post!!!

Me too (in my Jeep). Not in the Jetta. Although the Jetta has not had many problems other than stranding my wife at night in an unknown neighborhood with a dead fuel pump, it is still "just a car", and not fun like the Civic was and the Jeep is.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
I love my Jetta, it's fun to drive and hasn't given me any hassles. I'm driving 800 miles back to Billings, MT for the holiday weekend (in-laws)

I'm interested to see how the turbo does over the 5 mountain passes. Supposedly turbos enjoy high altitudes... or at least aren't bothered by them like most n/a cars.
  • sarah233sarah233 Member Posts: 161
i don't want to get into a "civic vs. jetta" thing after this morning, but my civic was SO BORING and had no power. sorry your wife got stranded........but i haven't had any problems with my car at all so i have no reason to bash it.
  • protegextwoprotegextwo Member Posts: 1,265
I'm glad you enjoy your car. I would include a VeeDub in any shopping/test drive regime, when researching a new car purchase. Volkswagen has done a lot to raise the bar in all segments in which they compete. Very commendable, me thinks. To be honest, the Volkswagen Jetta Wagon GLS-V6 is a verrrry tempting vehicle.

BTW, your Town Hall name? Anakin,...Anakin Skywalker? The kid whom turned into Darth Vader? I had to ask!

May the force be with you Anakin, and avoid the dark side me thinks...
