Actually, why are we discussing this anyway? I was making a point that the lowly Protege has meets like this. EVERYONE expects the high-tech, sporty, top-of-the-line-economy car Jetta to have a cult following of devotees. So actually, your comparison shows that the two cars have something in common -- which I firmly believe was the last thing in the world you wanted to illustrate with that remark.
Meade
Do you want a cookie or something for organizing meets?
Give me your address and I'll mail you a box of cookies. What you do in your spare time (besides bashing the Jetta owners) is not my business.
(and I looked at the Protege problems board....it's no crown jewel of reliability either....you can say the same for the 02 Camry.)
SAB???
That's for front impact and the Jetta also gets a 5 star. I'm talking side impact. I've driven the current Civic and Imprezza. Neither one felt substantial or safe in regard to a side impact. Furthermore, neither one has any luxury.
BTw, where's the Pro rate? As we all are pretty much in agreement about the banality of the civic, it's uesless bringing it up. At least the pro has some zest!
I guess the Jetta would make a great Pizza Hut delivery vehicle -- those seats will keep the pizzas warm in transit!
Meade
Jetta offers choices of more HP, more mileage, more luxury, higher resale, etc..
Meade- Sorry to hear that you have to drive a 76 Maverick. Is your Protege in the shop or is a 76 Maverick preferred to Protege?
Zoom-Zoom?
i use the seat heaters instead of the regular heater--i prefer that heat to hot, dry air blowing all over the place.
Also, I don't know why thes organizations don't test side impact collisions.
BTW, SAB=Side air bags.
BTW, I haven't seen any Jetta commercials lately. I do, however, see a lot of Protege "zoom zoom" commercials. And Mazda doesn't have to beg for buyers like VW does. "Drivers Wanted?" How about taking out classifieds too?
Well, you can all breathe a sigh of relief now. I'm logging off and heading out the door, not to return until Monday. Have fun with your Jettas; I know I'll be having a great time zooming home from work even though it is 97 outside right now!
No hard feelings anyone, OK? If we all came from the same cookie cutter, this world would be a boring place and every last one of us would have a Civic in our driveway!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!
;-)
Peace,
Meadeball
P.S. One last thing -- I have my own seat-heating device. It's large, round, and soft to the touch, and works best after a couple beef'n'bean burritos from Taco Bell. Bye!
Zoom-Zoom?
Mazda's website doesn't consider the Jetta as a direct competitor.
BTW, SAB=Side air bags."
Your car has SIDES? (Jeep owner)
:-)
newcar: i guess there will be no truce, but i'm having fun with this. i think you are too.
you do realize your Protege is not the general consensus of its reliability.
You bring up vocus...he's not the general consensus of VW reliability.
If the Protege is so reliable, there wouldn't be a need for a Protege problems section in Maintenance and Repair.
Every car is going to have its problems. It's not a hard concept to understand.
Anyway, it runs pretty good for an 11 year old car and still gets pretty good gas mileage. I'm planning on giving it a really good wash and wax and making it look as good as it can (the paint's been fairly neglected).
The heated seats are VERY good when you have a bad back, like I do (permanent damage from a car accident in 1998). I turn them on when I get stiff from driving, and it takes the stiffness right out of my muscles. Can't do that in any Protege (I know, I have driven 3 for extended periods).
And why are we having this fight anyway? Who cares if some say the Protege handles better or the VW has a better interior. Everyone knows what they liked enough to buy when they drive it. That is all that should matter.
There is enough hatred and fighting out there, so why add more in the form of all this crap?
Ah, the Jetta owner's favorite phrase. Every car is going to have problems. That has to be the million-th time that phrase has been uttered on this board. Guess what? Every car has 4 wheels. Every car has some sort of engine. Every car has seats. Every car has windows. According to your logic, every car must be the same right? The HALF truth is that every car may experience problems. The TRUTH is that some cars are more prone to having problems than others. "It's not a hard concept to understand."
I had problems with my Protege that no one else had when I owned it. It happens to everyone.
No way. A) A civic has no soul while the pro is at least a fun, tossable car.
The surgeon general reports that 99 out of 100 interviewed had no problems with the car. The other one was Paul.
Is that really how it works? Funny how I don't see many GM vehicles getting first place in comparisons, yet they are the biggest car company in the world with the most money. Would you care to explain that to me?
every day i get in my car and think, i love my car. i haven't done that with any other car i've driven. this is the first car i've had that i enjoy as opposed to just using to get from point a to point b.
"The VW spec is 87 lb-ft for the lug nuts. Much higher than Toyota's 60 lb-ft spec. So the lug nuts tightness is not a defect, if CR bothered with checking the owner's manual of the Jetta wagon."
Well, if you bother to read the magazine, you would know that CR always checks the owner's manual as well as the shop manual. Unlike car magazines that get their test cars directly from the manufacturer that may have been hand-picked (probably a waste of time for some makes), CR buys their own test cars, carefully breaks them in and makes sure the cars are in spec (wheel alignment, tire balance, engine specs etc.) No, I doubt having X number of rattles or less per vehicle is part of the spec of any vehicle.LOL
This is NOT the WWF. We do not have knock-down, drag outs that are like unto "my dad can beat up your dad." NO, there is not another room you can use for this on Edmunds.com. If you'd like to discuss the relative merits in a civilized fashion, be our guest to head over to the comparisons board.
If it weren't such a waste of my host time, I'd go back and delete most of the past 70 posts that popped up during my 3 hour absence from this topic. But it is.

I had a 1992 Civic DX which had no problems before 100,000 other than wear stuff like brakes and muffler at over 60,000.
Still had original clutch when I sold last year at 141,000 miles.
That's funny. I was just thinking how fun and tossable my Civic was. It was LOTS of fun!
Me too (in my Jeep). Not in the Jetta. Although the Jetta has not had many problems other than stranding my wife at night in an unknown neighborhood with a dead fuel pump, it is still "just a car", and not fun like the Civic was and the Jeep is.
I'm interested to see how the turbo does over the 5 mountain passes. Supposedly turbos enjoy high altitudes... or at least aren't bothered by them like most n/a cars.
BTW, your Town Hall name? Anakin,...Anakin Skywalker? The kid whom turned into Darth Vader? I had to ask!
May the force be with you Anakin, and avoid the dark side me thinks...
