where is it written that the Jetta is anything less than top rate quality, for it's price range? paul's rattles. so do a few other peoples. mine doesn't. this is my repeat Jetta purchase. my first one didn't rattle either.

the fact is, most American and Japanese SEDANS in the under $25k range are cars people are forced to own. well, maybe except for the horrendous PT Cruiser.

the best thing about VW is, people drive them because they actually WANT to. not because they were scared into it by Honda/Mazda [non-permissible content removed], or because it is all they can afford. i still can't fathom it, but i realize it is true - some people read this forum, and actually go buy a Honda or Mazda because they think it won't break down or rattle. i personally could never live my life in fear like that. would much rather take a chance on a car rattling, than falling asleep at the wheel or slitting my wrists from boredom.

wouldn't matter if every single Jetta rattled, or even had mechanical problems. they are sweet cars. people love them. VW has "something", even I don't know what it is exactly , that other car makers don't.

we can argue and argue and argue, but that fact is, there are some people that swear that they will never buy a first VW, and some that swear they will never buy another one. who cares? i don't. VW doesn't. sure, some paranoid people do. let them drive their Mazdas and Hondas. their as just as many people that for decades past, and decades to come, will ONLY buy VW's. the reason is they have soul, quality, safety, in a nice cheap package, that no one else can seem to touch. shouldn't we leave this board to Jetta owners to discuss/praise/whine about the Jetta? i could never actually post somewhere else, about a car i don't own, without feeling like a total loser with too much time on my hands. but, that's life for me i guess. everyone is raised with different ideas of what is acceptable with regard to interacting with society i guess.

    isn't this conversation getting old?

What the heck is going on in here?

It seems like many of you have forgotten that our discussions in the Town Hall attempt to provide a civil area for friendly conversation that (for the most part) belongs a) under the topic of the main board and b) under the topic of the specific discussion.

There are many conversations going on in here that don't comply with that tenet at all and this has been going on for way over a hundred posts.

Protege conversation belongs in the Protege discussion. Protege vs. Jetta discussion belongs on the Comparisons board.

Petty squabbling over personal opinion doesn't belong here at all.

The Town Hall also hosts these discussions for folks interested in specific vehicles. There is no way someone looking for honest information on the Jetta would possibly think they might find it here.

And that, my friends, is not acceptable.

I agree with Kirstie, it is way too hard to go back and delete all that should be deleted in here. If any of you understand our point, it would be much appreciated if you would delete your own out of line posts (IAW what I wrote above).

Further messages on this order WILL be removed.

If anyone has any questions or feels a need to comment on my post, please email me.

Kirstie, I appreciate the assist, thanks.

Hey what kind of Jetta do you own? 1.8T, TDI, VR6? That other engine...

    Just curious. Without the 1.8T (or a VR6) I wouldn't touch a Jetta.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Have you ever given a TDI a try? I would imagine you would be surprised at the amount of power that it really does have. Sure, it cant keep up with the 1.8T, but the savings in fuel are amazing. Right now I have put over 450 miles on my current tank and am still showing over 1/4 on the fuel gauge.

I would also like to say to all of those out there considering a Jetta that to date, I love my car (2002 TDI). It has had zero problems, no sign of rattling, and I love getting in it every day after work. I actually go out for lunch even when I have food to eat just because I want to drive it, and that is a huge difference over my old car (1994 Chevy Lumina - ugh!).

I am posting, using my laptop in a NC hotel room right now. :) Driving to see relatives in Asheville, NC (ugh). Drove my car about 250 miles thus far, fuel economy is holding a steady 28mpg (all highway, 75-85mph, AC on the entire time). Having alot of fun driving, even with the rattle. :( Even showed my dad what it felt like to go 100mph on the highway again. :) He didn't believe we were going that fast, until he looked at the speedo himself. Now he is all of a sudden talking about getting his license (and he is 56). We will have to see where this one goes... :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I went to the lawyer today. What he told me is that it would be very hard to prove the rattle would lower the value of my car (one of the stipulations). He also said the service area gave me pretty spotty records, probably on purpose. And he said if VW did decide to buy this car back, they would give me MSRP only, and then deduct about 34 cents for each mile (and I am at 15K now, so that would be ~$5100, which would make me negative anyway. It's not even worth it. I will just end up keeping the car, and maybe trying to sell it myself. I am really mad over this now, but I somehow am glad I got to keep the car. This is really sick. :) I drove this trip thus far (see above post), and I remembered why I bought this car. I love it! :)

Also, the heated seat (set on "1") is great, and my back didn't hurt over the 250 miles so far driven. Who says heated seats are only for winter? :)

Anyway, Happy 4th everyone! Have a happy and safe holiday.

I was a little surprised to hear the report of only 28 mpg on a highway trip, even at higher speeds. We no longer own it, but got 26 mpg on highway trips at an average 75 mph in a '98 BMW 540i sport 6 speed, which is charged for some odd reason, a GAS GUZZLER TAX due to its epa city rating of only 16 mpg. It's funny, because we averaged about 18 mpg overall(it has a computer to track this), which isn't that bad for a 8 cylinder vehicle driven in lots of traffic.

We like the Jetta for its affordability mixed with Germanic style and will definitely consider one when we move to a small town and are putting 6,000 easy low stress miles on it a year rather than the 20,000 mile a year dangerous Atlanta commute my wife has to make here. I want her in a bigger vehicle on these roads.
  • jsstoverjsstover Member Posts: 40
That's very odd... When I drove my jetta (before the wife stole it from me), I would average about 28mpg per tank with the 2000 VR6 5 speed manual. When I would highway travel I would average 32mpg. Now granted, I am a very conservative driver. I always do the posted speed limits (65mph on highways in Ohio) and be very easy on the accelerator.

Other than the window regulator clips breaking on the driver's side window, we have had no problems with our Jetta. It has been a very reliable car so far and we have 38,000 miles on her.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i average 25-26 in my stop and go usually. i must say this 100 degree weather has not helped in the MPG department, for some reason. the car drives fine, even with A/C on, but i am noticing that i am not getting as many miles in a tank full this past week.

i can get 31-33 on the highway on long trips. that is about it.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i never got even close to 25-26 in my Gen 4 VR6. 17 city, 22 highway was the best i could do. it loved the petrol! :)
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
I get 25 MPG in my 2001 1.8T and that's 75% highway/25% city, AC/defroster ALWAYS on. I average about 85 mph on the freeway. If there's one major drawback to my Jetta it's the horrible gearing VW uses. No car sold in the US should be turning more than 2k RPM in the top gear at 55 mph. Quite simply, VW gears their cars wrong.

My old 2.4 L 145 HP 91 Stanza could cruise at 85 all day and still give me 30 mpg.
  • venus537venus537 Member Posts: 1,443
you're right about the VR6, it sucked a lot gas out of my car too. i'm too lazy to figure out my gas mileage so i just go by how many miles i can get out of a tank full. with the 1.8t, i'm getting as many miles as i did from my previous accord V6 which had a gas tank that can hold about 2.5 more gallons. one more reason for me to like the 1.8t. even though my turbo is saddled to an automatic, it's more energetic, more fuel efficient, more refined and quieter than my VR6 ever was.

i know the VR6 got a horsepower boast since then, but i don't see why anyone would spend the extra money for the VR6. you'll miss out on the real wood trim and automatic climate control on the top model i guess.

blueguy: an awful lot of cars out there have their trannys geared "wrong" then. 2250 rpms at 60 mph sounds about right to me. during the first few weeks of driving my VR6, i found myself trying to shift up to another gear when i was already in 5th gear. so how does this gearing problem compare to the beam axle?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I had the AC on the whole time, was travelling in 90-degree weather, and going 75-85mph all of the time with occasional bursts to 100. My 2001 Protege got the same mileage with a 130hp (wheasing) 2.0 engine. I am very happy! :)

I have gotten up to 30mpg on this last tank, so it's getting better. Also, there were some city miles on the first (28mpg) tank.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I told one of my relatives that I had gotten a new car, a Jetta. She was like, "what's that? I have never seen one." Okay, anyway...

I have not seen one Jetta here in NC the entire time we have been here. I have been looking on used car lots and everything, and not ONE! I still cannot believe it, neither can my dad.

I finally got my new tire while I was here too. It only cost me $122 here, so that's cool (I have the 17s).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I just ran out for a bite to eat, at the local Waffle House restaurant up the street from our hotel. This guy had a Jetta TDI (he was from Texas though). He noticed my key on the table, and started asking away about my Jetta. He went with me to the parking lot, looked at the engine and the interior, and we talked for like 10 mins. or something.

He said he has a dash rattle too, but he doesn't want to investigate it, and he deals with it. Maybe I should have talked to him a couple months ago, eh? :) Anyway, it was really cool to run into someone who was so hyped about the Jetta.

hello, well after reading all the
    posts here regarding rattles,and
numerouse other problems, i decided to visit other car sites such as autoweb, carpoint, and cars.com andautosite among many
    others, and sure enough those
jetta owners r haveing same problems as u people in this forum.i especially like the 3 strait reviews in autoweb about regarding 3 different jetta owners who all had driver windows
fall into the door. anyway, not that i did not believe u guys but i just had to check it out for myself. same problems over at those sites as well lots of door rattle problems, electrical problems, among many other. anyway, since u guys talk about rattles so much here i have dubbed u guys the ratt pack. needless to say, i wont be getting a jetta anytime soon.

Every car has its problems though. So it can happen to any of them on the road.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Is this the conclusion of the Vocus Jetta Drama? Are you back in love with your Jetta Vocus. I mean you've already gone back and compared it to the Protege, even though YOU were the one screaming at everybody to take that kind of talk to the Comparo topic.

Seriously, is this the end? Are you just going to live with the rattles now?

Um, I expect about 2500-2600 rpm (about 100 rpm for every 5 mph over 55) at 80 (freeway cruising). You know in Germany they don't have this kind of pathetic cruising gear as everybody who travels on the autobahn would be hyper-mad at VW for giving them cars that can't clip along smoothly and economically at normal speeds.

It's not even the buzzing issue any more (that still gets on my nerves). It's the sorry gas mileage I get every time I cruise up to LA. My friend's Infiniti g35 with 260 HP should NOT be getting better gas mileage when he's loafing along at 90.

my jetta 4 cyl. 1.8 turbo sedan 2002 was fine the first 4000 miles but the noise in the doors now at 8000 miles is totally bad. the mechanic pulled off one side panel and said some plastic part was flopping around. tried silicone and foam spray, no luck. ordered panels for the worst two doors to replace. will let you know results. other two doors making noises around the door locks. again sounds like rubbing plastic. any hints, help or advice? had my acura integra on these same bumpy roads for 16 years and no rattles. is there any hope, i have a tough time with rattles. this jetta has me worried as i keep my car in top condition and for a good while. please advise. thank you
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I want to believe there is hope. Occasionally, I also hear slight rattling coming from my door locks, but it is not nearly as bad as my dash rattle. Which, by the way, is getting worse. I am hoping that the worse it gets the easier it will be to fix it when I bring it to the dealer next Wed. Maybe that's just wishful thinking....

My doors also make noise but that I can live with as long as the dash rattle muffles everything else. I love my Jetta....but it is a shame that a great car which provides an enjoyable driving experience can be overshadowed by such an annoying rattle. The rattle does not even affect the mechanicals of the car....the only thing it affects is my mind and attitude. I wish I had the ability to ignore the rattle. Though, if my car had alot of miles on it I would figure that rattles come with age......

Actually, someone in my neighborhood yeserday commented on how pretty and nice my Jetta was and they thought it was real expensive. I love to get compliments...especially on a car that has been on the market for over 2 years.

Paul. You said you should have talked to that guy from Texas months ago, and thats too bad, since a bunch of people tried to tell you the same thing months ago. Yes the rattle can be annoying, but you seem to really love your car, so it's good to see that maybe you are ready to put it out of your head and just drive.

I pretty much figured that's what the lawyer would tell you. I'm sure you kind of knew too, but being so mad about the service department might have clouded your judgement.

So let's hope you're ready to enjoy and drive your car............

$122 for ONE TIRE?? Wow! I was looking around for tires for our Jetta, and was complaining about anything over $50-55!!! Holy Crow, what are those things made of, gold?

"...He noticed my key on the table, and started asking away about my Jetta. He went with me to the parking lot, looked at the engine and the interior, and we talked for like 10 mins. or something."

Wow, that's pretty nervy. I can't imagine talking to someone just because I saw a keychain.

    Here you go:

Go for the racer look. Remove All interior panels and non essential parts. Drive with bare metal doors with just the mechanicals there.

This will give you the coveted German function over form look and also (hopefully) eliminate your rattles. It should also reduce weight, and therefore improve gas mileage, braking, accelleration, and handling.

Good luck with your crummy car.

yes paul its true all cars are
trouble prone, but thats not what iam talking about here. iam saying that the odds of getting a honda or toyota thats reliable is pretty goood. the odds of getting a jetta that is reliable is pretty slim. i would much rather put the odds in my favor.another words, buying a jetta is a crapshoot, u have to hope and pray that your new jetta is going to be a good one. good luck all future jetta owners you will need it.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
blue - well i wouldn't expect anything less than a VW complaint from you :)

but i wonder why yours revs so high. mine, at 75-80mph, is just at 3k rpms. must be really different gearing for the 5 speed manual vs. the 5 speed automatic. what is your car doing at 75-80? like 4500? that is bad.....getting into old Integra GS-R territory there....

are you shifting into 5th? haha. have you had the car checked out? it shouldn't be that high...can't be good for MPG's...

vocus - i often have people ask me where i got my car. i wasn't too keen on silver/gray leather combo at first, but took it because it was the best color combo in the area. lots of people have actually asked me about the silver/gray leather. my point - i guess it isn't too rare for people to question total strangers about their car. i would never have the nerve to though...
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
please tell me what these odds are that you are referring to, and how you came up with them.

aren't you the person that a few months ago came in here and said you bought a Jetta and traded it immediately for an RSX?

"have you had the car checked out? it shouldn't be that high...can't be good for MPG's..."

What are they going to "check out"? There is nothing you can do about the gear ratios short of changing them.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
right, if it is the the gearing, nothing is "wrong"....except in Blue's opinion. and all things considered with regard to what he thinks about his car and VW in general, that is entirely possible. i am saying, if the car is that horrendous on the highway, something could be wrong, mechanically, with that specific car. i have never heard of anyone else complain about a abnormally high rpm highway drive in any Jetta, VR6, turbo, or other. just a new complaint that i don't recall hearing before. but, given VW's horrible reliability and quality, there could be a major engine or tranmission issue here.

just asking BLUE if he has had it checked out....:)
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
What else could it be besides gearing is what I'm trying to say. The only think I can think of is that the clutch could be slipping badly, but blueguy would know that. There is nothing to be checked. That's the way it is and it cannot be fixed because that's the way VW designed it. I don't think it's a flaw because there are MANY 4cyl cars out there that turn quite a bit of RPMs when highway cruising. It seems the smaller, more high output engines are the ones that rev high on the freeway. Take a look at motorcyles. Those things turn 5000-7000 rpms when they are just cruising. Didn't they change something with the gearing in the 2002 1.8T manuals anyway?
  • bluong1bluong1 Member Posts: 1,927
one more thing could be wrong is the tachometer itself.

  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
not sure what was changed with regard to 2002 turbos, outside of upping the boost a little bit.

yep, most small four cylinders do rev pretty high at high speeds. to me, my 97 Honda Civic HX 5 speed, and this 2002 Turbo automatic, are the smoothest revving small fours I have ever driven. very quiet and sedate on the highway. the difference i guess between the two is that i can get the VW to actually go somewhere :) the HX, though pathetically slow, got EXCELLENT MPG's though :)

the VW is a small four, but i guess it doesn't rev as high as the Integra did because it has turbo, and it comes on so low (1900 or something like that). of course, my redline is like 6k or 6500, where the GS-R was almost 8k.

I own a 1999 Jetta GL 4 door (new style) that was recently hit on the drivers side. The B pillar was pushed in so that it touches the side of the drivers seat and the air bag did not deploy. My question is should it of deployed? How do I know that it will deploy in the future? I have had to have the front passengers dash air bag replaced twice by VW and I am now concerned that it may not go off in the future if needed.

    Thanks for your input.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
The 02 5 speed turbos do turn lower RPMs at 80-85 than I get in my 01. It's still too high though. 5th gear is supposed to be a cruising gear, and thus very tall.

Is it possible to still buy a stripper Jetta GL with manual crank windows?
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i would say, since you have the 99 Jetta, without the airbags in the ceiling, that your car operated fine. the side airbag in the seat probably inflates from a certain pressure. i am assuming you were in that seat, and you are alive, so the impact, by the time it hit the seat, was not enough to make the bag inflate i guess.

i would say that is a good thing :)

is the car not "totalled" now?

i was in a fairly severe accident in a 01 Civic EX. i hit two things head on - a car and a telephone pole, and neither front airbag went off. i thought it strange too.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Yes, I have a '02 Jetta GL with crank windows. I needed to get a pretty "cheap" car since we were not planning on getting a new car for a couple more years. The lease deal on my Jetta was great. Very low payments. Eventhough it's a "stripper" it still comes with A/C, 6 airbags, 4 wheel anti-lock brakes and a very fuel effecient engine. Though I saw a Jetta base model with a 1.8t engine. Except for my rattle(s), I really am enjoying my Jetta.

I was reading on Automobile magazine today that the Jetta will not be redisigned until 2005. That is when my current lease will be up. They said the Jetta will be bigger, which is no surprise.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
So what do you plan to do now?

Also, where in your dash is the rattle?
  • vic19vic19 Member Posts: 56
CR rated the Jetta wagon number 1 among station wagons in its class. Two minor problems, one was a rattle in the dash.

I'm with you Vocus, a rattle in the dash is not a minor problem. It would drive me wild, and they're practically impossible to find.

Neither one of your airbags went off in the Civic when you had the accident? I find that surprising. I guess you weren't going like 15mph or whatever the speed to make them go off. At least you walked away, so that's good.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I guess this would be the end of the Jetta Saga. :) I really like the car alot, and the rattle is annoying. I might change my mind yet again and try to sell the car privately in a year or so, but right now I cannot afford to pay the negative equity on it (like $2000 or something). Also, if VW would have bought the car back, I would have had to pay more than if I sold the car myself. So why lose more money?
