Does this apply to 2001 XG-300 Also?

Question: "Does this apply to 2001 XG-300 Also?"
Can not say for sure. Your best bet would probably be to call your local Hyundai dealer and ask if you have an open recall on the ECM Reprogram.
If that's where you bought the car they should have that information on hand.
    Good Luck.

I have 2001 XG 300L with trip computer(?).
    I dirve mostly in city.
When I fill up, the Distance to Empty shows 370 miles.
Then after 5 miles driving, it shows 340, then....it goes to 280 mile with 20 miles driven. I can see the number drops as I go... Is it because of gas vapor pressure build up in the gas tank?
    Anyone has similar problem?

Shortly after XG300L purchase last year, I had independent window shop to do a after market tint on rear window. The result is poor AM reception, due to metallic particles in the tint.....
Is there any (simple) way to add AM antenna?

The recent recall on the side air bags is for the Sonata, not the XG300,accoring to Consumer Reports June issue. The lurching problem is not a recall, but a service bulletin to dealers.

As my grandmother used to say, "never judge a book by its cover", is probably a painful lesson for you sobright1. If there is one consolation I can offer (but not your $10K haircut) is to buy a Toyota Avalon XLS as your replacement car.

The Avalon is reliable, dependable, coffin-like quiet, excellent gas mileage, spacious interior, large comfortable bucket or bench seats and all that with a premium JBL sound system.

If you intend to keep this car for a long time you should expect 100,000+ trouble-free miles or if you decide to trade after four years, the residuals are outstanding.

So how do you spell relief? A-V-A-L-O-N.

prison experience.Guess it's something you just have to walk off.If your experiences are true,I'd say you got a lemon. The XG's seem to be selling well.Other then rough shifts the car seems to generally satisfy the expectations of their owners.Your dealer experience also seems to run counter to most Hyundai purchasers.
deluxcar I owned an Avalon prior to purchasesing a 2000 base Impala.Iput very high mileage on a car(40,000 per year). The car was adequate, but at about $10,000 more then an Impala not for me.The maintenance was high and dealership issues were greater then with a GM dealer.Everything found in the Avalon can be had for much less in a Lesabre.
The main problem with Japanese cars is the almost anal maintenance mindset they get you in.If the average Chevy was maintained like this it would last 300,000 miles. With the Impala I can skip an oil change without fearing sludging, not worry about timing belts and generally just drive the car.In my case anyway ,the Impala just allows me more piece of mind.
If I wanted a fully equipped mid-size car for normal driving I would consider the XG.It offers everything a more expensive midsize car can offer at a very good price.

Sorry, you got a lemon, but I find your comments to be blown way out of proportion about all Hyundais in general. Scan the other boards and you won't find any problems like yours. Almost everyone is raving about how happy they are with their Hyundais, even after 30k, 50k, and 80k. Auto Union recently rated Hyundai higher then Honda, Toyota, Nissan, VW, Mazda, and Mitsubishi in a customer satisfaction/quality survey. That alone proves they aren't all junk. In fact, the Hyundai Sonata was rated the best midsize sedan, the Kia Sedona was rated the best minivan, and the Hyundai Sante Fe was tied with the Highlander as the best midsize SUV. This is the first time any Korean car has made it to first place in any survey. I have had my $10k Hyundai Accent for 2 years and 23k and its only needed 2 trips to the dealer for repairs. Neither repair required it to be towed and it has never left me stranded. Oh, and my brakes work just fine. One repair required the tranny to be taken off to replace a small bearing and the dealer replaced my clutch when it didn't really need it (you should know the clutch is not covered under the warranty and the dealer didn't need to replace it with 21k miles worth of wear, but they did anyway. So, in other words, I have been treated well by my dealer and Hyundai has stood behind their warranty in my case). Any manufacturer gives you hassles when they think they will be stuck with buying it back. What, do you honestly think Toyota will gladly take their lemon off your hands? My sister had to fight Honda for an entire year to get them to buy back her piece of junk '00 Odyssey. She called them all the time and they would never return her calls, something that really pissed her off. So, she wasn't treated any better by Honda then you were by Hyundai.
As for your complaints regarding resale value, I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for you. Anyone who tries to get rid of their car after 1 year takes a huge loss, but you should have already known Hyundai has lower resale then the big Japanese makes. My friend has a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo which he spent 26k on, and surprise surprise, he has only been offered 13k to trade it in. So, your resale value was just as good as a Japanese nameplate SUV. The used car market is in a slump right now, so you should not have expected much. As for me, I have been happy enough with my Hyundai experience that I would not hesitate to buy another if they have a car that interests me. Once again, I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience, but making all Hyundais out to be as bad as yours is wrong and a flat out lie.

Sorry about your unfortunate experience with XG. It seems like you had quite a few problems, some of them are life threatening problems.
As I know, most state adopt Lemon Law, which requires to provide a new replacement vehicle when major safety system need more than 3 repair on the same system. While I was reading #1056 message, the brake problem was never corrected. If I were you, I would go to same dealership three times and file complaints clearly, then file Lemon in the State Consumer Affairs, etc. With just one problem, brake only. Bring up other non-life-threatening problems would not 'add up'.

And the trade-in value you have got...(I understand your feeling....) However, it happens to me when I sold Toyota Camry, and Chevy S-10...in recent years. The dealership offered substantially low numbers, compare to the Blue Book Wholesale. At least $4K-5K under their retail price. Also the Hyundai you have sold was in a accident and had brake problems which cannot be corrected (per your comment.) In other words, your $13K(trade-in) + $4K-5K = $17K-$18K(retail) for a used car which had a lot of problems, which dealer have to fix before they sold to consumer, by the book. (They will also be in a trouble when sold a vehicle with known safety problem.)

In my town, new Toyota Camry with automatic transmission and auto door/window... sold in that range. The trade-in price you got has huge difference from what you have paid, but doesn't seem totally un-reasonable.

"Hyundai has made great strides in packaging their cars but unfortunately they are still light years behind even the American cars in reliability and customer service, just barely ahead of a Yugo."

Sorry about your problems, but you are extrapolating alot from your personal experience. My brother had a Nissan Sentra that needed a new transmission and engine with less than 40k miles on it. Does this mean no one should buy a Nissan product? Nonsense.

Your above statement is ridiculous. Most Hyundai owners on Edmunds can easily refute that allegation.

    I don't blame them."

    They still sell Hyundais.

My dealer replaced the sway bar linkages and bushings today on my XG300. Boy, what a difference! Car rides like new. Actually, better than new because even new this car had a loose rear end. Now the ride and handling are vastly improved. My wife noticed the difference in riding in the car after a few minutes, and was impressed at the improvement. I am pleased, and hope that the repair lasts.

Took my 350L in at 3400 miles for ECM reprogramming. Even though I bought my car from a different dealer, this dealer was very nice. Even paid for cab roundtrip to/from my office. They said it was standard practice for them. They do operate shuttles but they figure customers don't want to be driven around dropping off people at different destinations. So, they pay for cabs. In the end, we are paying for it but, still, a nice touch.

The car is now starting off smoothly. No more grabbiness and surging! No more slipping transmission. I am happy again!

I did mention that the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel don't light up at night but I was told that is the way it is. Same for the power lock and window lock switches on the driver side armrest. Is this true?
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
The power window switches don't light up? They do on the Elantra.
  • leirexleirex Member Posts: 50
    Hello,

This is the second time that AIRBAG light comes on and stays. When it happened first time, dealer said that it was sort of loose wiring that caused the light to come on. It was fixed and now came back on. Should I bother to take it to the dealer again? What would the light mean exactly? I now have tendency NOT to trust Hyundai after so many problems (about 10 or so different problems in about 6 months with some of the same problem repeating) in a row. As I mentioned several times already, I still do have wind noise and engine noise problems that I have been living up with for several months after dealer tried to fix two times in vain. I am afraid that I am getting paranoid.

The on-board computer calculates your milage by your most recent driving data. When the tank is filled, it has a "default" number of, I estimated, 20 mi/h milage. So when the tank is full at 18.5 gal x 20 = 370. As your driving data changes, the default milage number changes. Sometimes you actually see the "miles to empty" go up when you switch from surface street slow driving to freeway high speed driving because your milage improves, and vise versa. It is a stuip device to me because it confuses than clarifies. They all brag about having this "on-borad computer" device in the car, but it is really a brain-dead device that provides no value.
  • dafuowndafuown Member Posts: 11
This is one of the less-noticed XG-350L devices similar to the auto side-view mirror angle adjustment when backing and automatic seat retreat when key is pulled..... Your auto A/C button will take care of everything according to your temperature setting, including adjusting the venting and air flow direction (!!) as required. If it needs a fast cool down or heat up, it will keep recirculating air (the circulation button is on) until the temperature reaches the setting, then open venting (the ciculation botton off). However, there is an exra feature in this: read the manual about automatic venting control. If you push the button with "A" in the circle (left to the recirculation button), it will take care of venting for you automatically. It actually detects the exhaust condition on the road and shut the vent off if it detects that you are idling in a freeway traffic jam with all the exhaust fuming at you. Isn't this amazing?? Of course, you can't stay on recirculation for too long before it starts to get condensation on windows. Therefore, the auto venting device adjusts the venting to optimize the in-car air quality as well!! Read the manual on venting control. So, push the big square "Auto" button for automatic A/C and the small "A within a circle" button for automatic venting. Once both are lit, you don't need to worry about anything other than setting the temperature at your preference. Don't need to adjust airflow direction, or the venting........ it automatically optimizes it for you.

For those who have been wanting to know how the XG fares in the offset impact, Dateline will be showing the results tonight at 10 pm eastern time. They will also have the results on a number of other midside sedans. Let's hope it does better then the bumpers did (they were rated poor). If it does well, it will also prove that sobright's rant about airbags that don't deploy will be shown to be a fluke.
  • acco20acco20 Member Posts: 211
Sorry to report the XG350 received a "POOR" rating, Only the ES and the Camry did better. UN- confirmed, but I am quite sure.
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
The XG350 received a "good" rating for the offset crash test, not "poor" -- it received "poor" for the 5 mph bumper test.
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
Hyundai has once again proven to make safe cars. No airbag problems were noted, unlike the Altima. Sorry sobright1, you were dead wrong about the safety of the XG. The only thing keeping the XG from getting the "best pick" rating was a possibility of lower right leg and foot injuries. Otherwise though, it did well and had low injury risks.

Great job, XG! It was good to see a Hyundai product do well.
  • dafuowndafuown Member Posts: 11
I did my reprogramming last Friday at 4000 miles on my XG350L that was bought in Nov 02. It really makes a big difference on the shifting especially from start to 1st gear. It does not lunge or lag any more. I made the request citing that I read it on a message board. The dealer told me that only certain VIN numbers had this problem. Is that true? I read so many messages among three boards and this is the most common problem. Anyway, with the new crushing test results, it proves XG350L is an excellent buy for those of us dare to make the jump with Hyundai. If you have not done the PCM reprogramming and have the problem with transmission during early shifting, you got to do this reprogramming. It does not take the problem away (the acceleration pedal is still touching than other cars), but it does improves to the point that I will no longer complain.
  • ajmaurerajmaurer Member Posts: 1
I feel your pain re: the transmission. I have taken my car in a total of 6 time within the past year re: the transmission slipping, lunging, whatever you want to call it. I am so tired of dealing with this problem. It is quite embarrasing when you have passengers in your car and all of a sudden your car goes from 5 mph to 15 mph without even pressing the gas. Goodness they think you're trying to run over someone. Anyway, the dealership looks at me each time with confusion. Then the reply I receive when I return to pick up my car is, "We didn't experience any hesitation as you explained, the car ran fine for us." I don't know what else to do. If I try to sell it then I'm sure the prospective owner would experience the same as I have while test driving. Can anyone offer some guidance on how to rectify the problem? I often wonder if it would be helpful to contact Hyundai home office and explain my discontent. THX

    Hello,

No one so far has posted any response to my last posting regarding the airbag-light-always-on problem. Anyway, now after a couple of weeks, it went out. I wonder if there is loose connection somewhere or if something is really warning me of possible malfunction of airbag as SOBRIGHT experienced life threateningly. Does anyone know what AIRBAG light exactly means when it is constantly on? It really bothers me when it comes on and off. Thanks.

Just received in the mail a recall notice from Hyunai as follows"
An intermittent condition that leads to supplemental restraint systen (SRS) warning light illumination may result from motion of the side impact airbag wiring harness and side impact airbag wiring harness connector which mount to the adjustable seat cushion assembly. This condition only relates to the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact airbags and may prevent seat mounted side impact airbag deployment during and accident where such deploymnet sould occur.

I have reveived a "Technical Survery" after 1 year from purchase. It is about 8 pages long and asking about detailed items. I have owned several new cars, but never got this kind of survey.
Is this applies to all owners or randomly selective owners?
  • john00john00 Member Posts: 27
I got that same survey one day last week and I've had my xg300 since February 2001. Just like you I've never receive surveys after that long on a time, ususally receive them after the first month or two. I do remember receiving one for the XG after about a month or two. Maybe they are seeing how many people still own there XG's after a year and how things are.

I bought my car from Morrie's in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and I'm unhappy with the dealer. Everything from the sales process to the service has been aweful. The sales process is history, but now, when I take it in to be fixed, they deny the problem. My biggest beef is with the way it shifts. Reprogramming the ECM helped, but it still goes back to it's old ways now and then. And it took three trips to the dealer just to get them to admit there was a problem! What did the service manager do? He recommended I use Amoco Gold!--yes--for a transmission problem. They just want to get rid of anybody who has a complaining. Also, the air conditioning doesn't cool well. What did they do? They wrote "can not duplicate problem" on the service order. When I inquired, they said I would need to bring it back when it's 90 degrees out so they could see if it's working. Is anybody else getting similar run-around with their dealers????
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
The Town Hall is about to take on a new look in an effort to make content more easily searchable and accessible.

Have you seen the Letter from the Town Hall Manager on the Town Hall Welcome page? If not, you might want to follow that link to have a look.

And hang on to your seats. Change is never easy - for any of us - but resolving the Search problems we've had will be worth the pain.

My parents have an XG300, and we all love it. In a year it only has 5,000 miles, and I put on 4,000 of them. I'm writing because I might take the car off my parents' hands and take it with me to law school. We live in New York City and this passed winter was rather weak. I want to know if anyone drove their XG300 in real winter weather, and how it responded. I'd be taking it to Syracuse, NY which averages 186 inched of snow a year. If it worked well, were there any modifications, like tires, that could be suggested?

Please email me at sbklaw2005@hotmail.com, since I will not be able to check this group often.

    THank you.

    1. XG350, when in Reverse, will the passenger side mirror would tild down?
    2. When you hold down the unlock key on the remote, will it lower the driver's side window?
    3. Overall how would you compare XG350 to?

    Thank you
  • john00john00 Member Posts: 27
    1. Only on the xg350 L model
    2. Yes pressing the unlock a second time and holding it will lower the drivers window
    3. Compare to what Toyota Nissan Inifinity ?
For the money it's hard to beat and the 5/60
    10/100000 is the icing.

These are great info... thinking about picking one up 350L next week.

One question, when I test drove the 350L, and put the gear in Reverse, the right side mirro did not tilt down, is there anything else I need to do?

    Thanks...
  • mavric68mavric68 Member Posts: 17
If the remote mirror switch is set in the center, neither mirror will tilt. To the right-just the passenger mirror. To the left-both side mirrors. Also, if the parking brake is set before the key is taken out of the ignition, the seat will slide back when the key is removed and will slide forward into driving position when the key is inserted again.

Test drove a 350L yesterday and bought it. Had one question though. The car had 4mi on the odometer. When I started the engine, there was a rapping sound coming from the engine. The sales person told me it was the self adjusting valves and the noise would go away after running it on the highway. Well I took t out on the highway for 5 miles and returened to the dealership. The noise was noticably less but still there. Has anyone had this and did it correct itself?
  • joenicjoenic Member Posts: 14
apparently the salesperson was correct because I picked the car up last night and this morning it is very quiet. I know I am going to have a few issues with the car. I wonder if anyone else has had these problems. Yes surging is one of them. The dealer says the mechanic on duty tells her that all new arrivals should not need any reprogramming though. I notice a destinct pulsating in the brakes. Could be warped rotors? The auto air conditioning seems to never shut down. I ran it for as long as an hour @ 75 degrees but never shut off. Also the ambient temperaturew reads form 90 -110 degrees. I wonder what that represents and if it has anything to do with the auto air. In anycase for my first day I love this car! Better than my Chev. Cav. I gave in trade. But thats an easy one..the Hyundai was 10K more on the sticker so we must have bought something for all that money!

Hi Guys, If I purchase a Hyundai Dealer at one shop, can I get warranty service at another Hyundai Dealer who are close to where I live?

    Thanks
  • joenicjoenic Member Posts: 14
jayliu, I have an Elantra '99 which I purchased from one dealer and have had warranty work done at another dealer here in the Boston area. No problem.

Like many of you I've experienced transmissions surges since the cars was new and have considered having the reprogramming done. But withing the last month I have not experienced any transmission surging. I've have my xg300 since Feb 2001 and have just turned over 10K. Since this the transmission has finally figured out how I drive I'm going to forget about having the reprogramming done. Maybe it just takes that long for it to figure out how you drive.

What octane of Gas should I use?
    87?
  • john00john00 Member Posts: 27
I believe what is reccomended is unleaded mid-grade of 89 octane. That's what I've always used and have never had a problem. Anything higher is a waste of money since the engine is designed for a particular octane.
  • forgopforgop Member Posts: 16
For the person asking about the mirrors lowering when putting in reverse, you must also make sure it is auto mode, or they won't lower.
  • forgopforgop Member Posts: 16
I just picked up my XG350L on Friday and I'm already in love with the car. I have one little detail that's bugging me at this point. I was nearly empty on Saturday and filled up the car. The trip computer didn't just automatically jump from 40 miles to empty to what a full tank of gas should have showed, which disappointed me. The number literally crept up gradually to over 200 miles to empty, but I drove 100 miles before it ever showed that figure. Has anyone else had the same problem?
  • mavric68mavric68 Member Posts: 17
87 is recommended on the 300.
  • forgopforgop Member Posts: 16
What kind of gas mileage have you had after driving your car for quite some time now? I have had mine for 4 days now and am somewhat discouraged for what I appear to be having at this time. Granted, it's just 200 miles on the odometer, yet I'm looking at somewhere around 340 miles for my first tank of gas looking at the trip computer. Has anyone hit 25 MPG or more?
  • joenicjoenic Member Posts: 14
Just filled mine up for the first time. I had 265 miles on it and it took 15.8 gals. Thats about 16.7 miles per gallon. I don't expect much more to be honest. The sticker rated it at 18 - 21 so if you live in Boston as I do knock 1-2 miles off the city figure. They fiure it under perfect driving conditions in the city which as we all know...NEVER happens. Also I filled up with 89 octane as the car is rated to use at least 87 octane at the pump. I've always found that 87 leaves just a little ping on all the new engines because the timing is so retarded. 89 usually always solves that problem. Then again, a slight ping doesn't bother many people.
