Tough crowd in here... Anyone else think the headlights on the 01 Max are in-adequate?? I seem to over-drive them a lot, on un-lit highways, maybe they need re-aligned ??? They just don't seem to be that bright....
Wow, I was amazed at the difference I noticed when I first turn on the lights in my 00 Max. Either you've got a problem with your lights alignment or you're accustomed to something far brighter than most of us.
I was looking at a friends max 2KSE the other day and I noticed that there are two bars (one on each side going diagonally down, with the one on the left going right to left and the one on the right going left to right). I then looked at my Max01SE and noticed they are not there. What are they and should I have them? Is this a mistake??
Using your directions, I was able to finalize the little wiring mess that the back-end repairs caused and made my CD changer dead. The "hook" now became the wiring harness attachment point and my trunk (driver side)is back to normal. CD Changer is working fine.
Regarding your detractors, Internet is a marvelous device that allows all kinds of free speech, which includes its less than civilized forms. Your detractors have the constitutional right to spew it all and it is up to the board supervisors to kick them out when it gets bad enough. I am happy to see that their punches, although hurtful, did not knock you out.
George, it is clear from your writings that your participation here is useful and informative to others here. The same can be said for Joe, and wg had some interesting thoughts on Mobil One and filters. can I suggest that the snipping cease and if you have something constructive then by all means chip in. That really goes for anyone out there. We should use this space for the trading of useful questions, answers and information (and of course the occasional humor).
..on my 2K Max with 5600 miles, no engine mods to speak of. Car was not at the gas station for more than a week before this occured. I am bringing it in on Thursday, it is still under warantee, but if you have any thoughts, it would be appreciated.
My analysis suggest that your IP address matches other members at this conference and other conferences at edmunds. How does it sound if someone makes open statements about you.
I appreciate your input but continue to have concerns in light of what my service manager is telling me. He was vehement in saying that the TCS and ABS would be impacted. Also, gerapau, it is my understanding that the Max's suspension, etc. is especially "tweaked" for the 17" wheel/tire package. If that is in fact true, then I fear that my handling would be adversely affected beyond the mere addition of a smaller wheel/tire package, i.e., the wheel/tire package (smaller) would impact and this "impact" would be exacerbated by having a suspension set up for much larger tires and wheels. May I ask if your recommendations are based on a technical background in this sort of thing or are you just surmising that I shouldn't have any problems going in either direction tire size wise??
Check out www.tirerack.com . They will have packages with snow tires mounted on steel rims, either 15" or 16" I'm guessing.
A higher profile 15 or 16 inch tire/wheel combo will be about the same diameter as the low profile 17 inchers the SE comes with. The ABS/TC system compares the wheel speeds with each other, so as long as all your wheels are the same size there won't be a problem.
With narrower, higher snow tires, your on-pavement handling will not be as good as with the stock tires. You will have to give up something for better going in the snow. No tire is perfect for every condition.
I own a GXE 5-speed (steel wheels and hubcaps) and want to get some aftermarket alloy wheels. Obviously I'd want proper fit (hub centric, right bolt circle and offset) and I'd want to avoid something hard to clean. There's the obvious decision to go with stock 15" or go +1 or +2 on size. My local Goodyear dealer advises avoiding wheels with chromed rims (where the rubber meets the wheel) because he said the chrome flakes and the wheels leak over time. Any other caveats on things to look for or avoid in aftermarket wheels?
Seems like many wheels use hub rings. Any opinions disadvantages or advantages that?
There are a few places that actually sell peoples take-off wheels..that is..people buy a car...want aftermarket wheels, and sell these like new wheels to them. One is Acker wheel (www.ackerwheel.com). I only offer this info because you may want to get a set of SE wheels for your GXE or....they offer MANY other wheels...and CHEAP compared to dealer costs !!
If you don't like my opinions go to the next one. Don't make accusations to stir the pot. But then that was what you wanted to do isn't it. What do you have to say about rpm9 sounds like he might not fit your sterotype
You drove a Grand Am...and you find it more exciting than a Maxima ?? ROFLMAO...I'm sorry....it's kind of obvious that you're a kid from the Grand Am room trying to make some sort of waves in this forum.....my god....laughing that hard really does HURT those stomach muscles !!! Nice try.
LMAO....You've just proven my point. You're a kid, and when you grow up...LOL...you may want to start searching higher up on the food chain for your "chicks" (by the way...chicks are baby chickens...you mean chics?..LMAO)...Thanks again.
You're really cracking me up! Your "gorgeous women" must be high school girls. I know you honestly believe in what you're saying. I've been there. But trust me, when you're older, you would have a much more accurate view of what constitutes a gorgeous women, and what a true stylish car should look like. And you'd laugh at some of the things you're saying now. I'm not trying to put you down. I'm sure you're much "cooler" than I was at your age. Hell, the first car I owned was a second-hand 1975 Civic when I was in Grade 12.
Joe Thank you for the aftermarket / OEM rim site. I purchased one of the first production GLe's in early July 99 so I don't have the star/spoke rims that the Se and the Gle come with now.
I have been on this board since day one and although I don't post very often I appreciate your informative and sometimes funny comments here.
Have just turned 30000 miles and I am still glad my user name is iluvmax!!
Yes...the wire loom is for the power drivers seat, as well as the for the heated seats. If you don't have a power passenger seat, you may not notice the loom tucked in under the pass seat. If you look closely under the passenger seat, even w/o a power pass. seat...you will find a wire loom somewhere...it may not be as noticable, or may be tucked in a bit better than the drivers seat.
Thanks for the pointer to Acker Wheels. I'll give them a call.
By the way, do have any idea what in model changes were in the 2000 Maxima that warrants two different sets of Factory service manuals (printed or on CD?). I'll look at my VIN to get the right set on CD, but wondered how significant the in model year changes were (or is it the difference between models -- GXE/SE/GLE)?
To all who may be interested... I have just sold my 2000 MAX SE...I bought the changer when I got the car for over $500 dollars(I know I paid a lot but that's how much they were back then!)..It is brand new(all serial numbers are on the unit and box!), in the original NISSAN OEM BOX, Never even been opened!!!(THE PRemier-AFTER MARKET UNIT- is not even close to the OEM and I would not get anything but OEM NISSAN)... I was just too busy(or lazy!..LOL) to install it in my 2000 max SE.....anyone interested in a BRand new OEM (model # B8183-C9961)6 disc changer for the 2000-2001 max..this is a steal..I am willing to sell it for $225.00(FIRM!) plus shipping(if that's possible..not sure?)..or just pick it up if you live in the NY\NJ\CT Tri-state area..any questions please e-mail me at Misel00@aol.com.....Please only serious inquiries..Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PS..Also once installed no dealer will ever know that you didn't have it when you baught the car thus carrying the full Nissan Bumper to bumper warranty..this was told to me by a service manager at my local Nissan!!!!!!)
All they have to do is ask to see the original bill of sale, or the purchase contract for the purchase of your car to prove whether or not you bought the changer with the car.
When I bought my Max, CD changer cost me $338 installed. Your ad doesn't mention installation (or warranty as canadiancl properly pointed out). It seems you ought to lower your "(FIRM!)" price some more to be successful in this forum. Or go to ebay.
I got the tires at Active Green & Ross. The tires were approximately $165 each and the steel rims were about $65 each. Price includes installation and balancing. I may have paid more than I should have but I didn't really shop around. The Nissan dealer quoted me a total price of approximately $1450 for the same tires and rims.
Thanks for bringing the fuel-cut discussion in the January 2001 issue of Road & Track to my attention. (See Page 142, Technical Correspondence, "Shifting killjoy".) A copy of the article made its way to some people who hopefully can make a difference.
For those who are interested, I've reproduced the article in Post #402 in the 5-speed forum:
I was wondering if anyone out here has this problem for their maxima:
If parked for more then 8 hours on a cold day (40° or under), it takes 2 LONG tries to get the engine to start. It's buggin me out!!! Anyone have this problem? (i hope i am not the only one)
I don't drive a Maxima and never have. But I've always liked the styling - until the 2000 model came out. The side view looks okay, but the front view looks too bubbly and bland and the rear end (especially the taillights) are a serious design flaw that actually should make the person who designed it go back to design school. I don't understand how the powers that be at Nissan actually let this happen.
This person has been posting the same kind of inflammatory statemmets in several forums. It must be some bored, unspervised junior high school kid with nothing better to do than annoy the grown ups!
I won't even RENT Grand Ams! The last time I did, it left me stranded, as well as being a very uncomfortable car. Whatta joke!
To each his own I guess. before I bought my 2k SE, I had a 95, then a 97. I wasn't crazy about the new look myself but....after about 10 minutes behind the wheel, I was hooked. Many people share your opinion on the rear end but....If you're a true Maxima fan...it grows on you to a point where you actually love the look...very different. Thanks for your post. We like ALL kinds of opinions !!
Jerry...I've posted this problem in the past but...I'll get into it again for ya.
If you start a cold Max for only a few seconds, such as to pull it into the garage, or just move it....without letting it warm up a bit, it'll sometimes be hard to start the next morning. I know it's a pain but...it's been a normal trait since the VQ came out in 95. In the future...try this...if you have to move the car briefly after it's cold, be sure to let her run for about 1 to 2 minutes before shutting het off...that should take care of the problem...let us know if that doesn't work.
I could be wrong but I don't think they are the same person. The only thing is I'm not sure if rpm9 is really a young whippersnapper or just trying to sound like one. But in any case, I don't think he is just trying to piss people off. There is a bit of method to his madness. He actually responded quite reasonably to one of my posts over in the Honda4 thread.
My 00 GLE started right away in the 0 Degree F. weather. But after running for 30 secs, put it in reverse and the car died. Did this 2X. Let it warm up a few more min and no problem.
The Traction control has been great this week in Kansas City. Was behind a Lexus ES300. He tried to get going up a slight hill, all I saw was his exhaust cloud but no movement. Was fun to pull around him and be on my way. (Would have thought the more expensive ES300 would have traction control standard!)
Hi all . I've got 30k miles on my early production(16 "wheels) se .I drive 100 miles a day from northern westchester to nyc .I've gotten through one pretty mild winter, do i really need snow tires on a front wheel drive car in the ny metro area? I would probably get alloy rims with tires from tire rack. Is the expense justified??? Joe what do you think? the last time i saw snow tires in my family was on our oldsmobile delta 88 circa 1975
This topic was discussed a lot when the new styling came up. But - if you read statistics, a lot of people actually like it. The sales of 2000 Maximas surpassed the previous year by a lot!! Someone can correct me but I think it was about 20%. Also, the new styling was imitated by Ford Taurus and is being copied by others, too. We bought a black y2k GLE and love the looks. On the other hand, SE did not look good because of the "black-eye" look of the tail lights (except when the rest of the car is also black). However, as in every similar situation, it is all a matter of personal taste. Just my 2c.
from what I understand, the reason why the new Maxima has sold so well is because Maxima owners are very loyal to the car because, after all, the Maxima has one of the best reputations in the sedan world. So when it came time to trade their old one in, despite their gut feelings about the undersireable design, they went ahead and bought one any way because, after all, it's still a Maxima. But deep down inside, there is an overall feeling of disappointment with the way it looks.
I was in the wonderful State of Montana for the last week visiting my parents, and I went down to the Nissan dealer just to see what they where charging for there Nissan Products. They had a 20th Anniversary on the lot, and wanted $33,000 for it, and said it was the cheapist in the state. Yeah Right!. Then I asked if they had any 5 speeds, and they said they didn't even know that Nissan made a 5spd in the Maxima. What the hell kind of dealership is that. Just thought I would share -Witt
I'm surprised that a sports sedan sells at all in Montana, LOL. That's got to be SUV and pick up territory!
Whacko, I'm one of the many in this forum that purchased a 2000 Max as my first Max. Brand loyalty and product reputation were factors, as was the performance, handling and perceived value. Design? I like the looks of BMWs more than nearly anything else. I happen to like the looks of my GLE, but it was not the reason to buy it. If you go to the forum that compares the 300M with the Max, you'll find a lot of the 300M owners bought their autos because they liked the styling. Let's see how happy they are a few years from now, LOL.
i too am a new maxima owner. personally, i thought the pre2000 maximas were a tid bit bland. i remember seeing a 2k max last sept and was blown away by the way it looks. well, blown away is a bit much, but i liked the new look alot. i dont buy your idea of loyal customers returning to purchase the new max solely as the reason why the max is doing well. it might be one of the reasons, personally, i think its not that big of a factor. every product has got it's loyal customer base. i think because of it's reputation as a leader in the sports sedan class, in addition to it's new looks, poor american build quality, is what makes the max leader of the pack.
Just chiming in. My first brand new car ever was my 2K SE Max. I bought it with the early in the model year with the 16" wheels even. What drove me to the Max was it's reputation, not necessarily it's looks. The last two cars I've owned, a 89 Taurus and a 90 Regal, both purchased with < 60K on them were junk before they hit 100K. Everything was going wrong on both, especially the Buick. Fuel injectors, computer, tranny, you name it. Now I know people say that US cars of the "new era" are comparable to the ricerunners, but after being burned twice, and deciding to spend big $, I chose the Max. I did several months worth of research before making my decision, and looks was on the bottom of the checklist, even though I like the looks. I even like the blacked out tail lights, at least on my car. I've got the pearl white with black tinted windows and black leather interior. Looks sweet. Maybe the grand am dude doesn't like the looks because he's always looking at the rear end cuz he couldn't catch up if he wanted to!
I bought my 2001 SE Max last month and have been loving it ever since. That was the ONLY car I looked at or even test drove - all because of it's reputation and other people I've known who have owned one and wish they still did.
My last car was a 91 Eagle Talon and I had several problems with it. I was also in college and the time. I treated myself this time and while the back of the Max isn't my initial desire, it has grown on me and I love my baby max!!! :-)
