tdar: did you change the tweeter and/or head unit as well, what did you have to do to remove the factory speaker?
Aurora's 17" looks great on the intrigue final 500, even better performance in the summer, for sure. Anyone put on 17" wheels yet?
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
one2one : Wishful thinking. My guess is they still want to sell as many as possible before the division dies. I don't think Oldsmobile will be front and center like some previous shows though.

jg28 : I would go Maxima if you are looking for a V6. Altima is good, but there are a few cut corners and I don't like the clear tail lights on the Altima. You are also more likely to be able to deal on a Max at this time.

Last winter I still had the 98 Intrigue and it didn't have PCS. In about 6" of snow, I took it out on a deserted street on the way home from work (since it was still snowing no one was out) and the car performed like it was dry outside. I did full throttle acceleration from a dead stop and pushed it up to 50 mph. No slipping, no sliding-- straight as an arrow. The Intrigue has excellent control in the snow. I can only imagine how it must feel with PCS. My assesment of the Intrigue in foul weather is that it inspires confidence in bad weather driving. I've driven cars where there's a noticeable difference in driving wet vs. dry. In the Intrigue, if it weren't for the fact the wipers were going, I wouldn't have known that the weather was bad. That's just one of the reasons I opted to get another one.

Yes, can't tell much from just that one picture. Hopefully there will be some sort of explanation on the website soon.

Re. wiper blades: don't overlook your GM dealer. I got a set there a few months ago, exact-fit original GM (in the GM package with a part #) for less than what I would have paid at the big chains.

All, my buddies non start problem, at 44k miles, out of warrantee no less, was found to be the cransk shaft sensor, as I suspected. Whats is the TSB number so he can go after GM for the 400 dollar bill?
    -thanks all.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
As far as I know just because there is a TSB does not mean it is a free fix out of warranty, it is just instructions for the dealer how to fix problems. GM are not obliged to pay for it because they issued a TSB.
  • ketchketch Member Posts: 217
ya I know just because a TSB may exist, that it doesn't mean its covered under any warrantee neccesarily. nevertheless, the TSB would help my friend get what they call an "adjustment" perhaps. Anyone know the crankshaft sensor TSB is, if any?

yurakm said to dindak "My Regal uses the same 22 inch blades as Intrigue. My Malibu also uses the same blade on driver side, and shorter 19 inch modification on right." and posted a link to a message posted in the Chrysler Impala discussion - here is the link: yurakm "Chevrolet Impala" Jan 2, 2002 11:27am.

Something was wrong with the link display that screwed up the page layout, so I had to remove the original message - sorry.

A couple of recent off-topic and uncivil posts have been removed.

You folks need to remember that the surest way to encourage someone to keep making posts that agitate you is to keep responding to that person. Think about it - if you are trying to irritate people and no one at all takes the bait, wouldn't you get bored and give up? OTOH, if you see that you are accomplishing your purpose of annoying folks, that just encourages you to continue because you are getting what you wanted in the first place.

Just remember that folks can express opinions in the Town Hall as long as they stay within the Membership Agreement. And there is no post in the world that requires a response. Just skip it if it aggravates you. And if you see a post that you feel violates the Membership Agreement, please drop me an email and I'll check it out. It's my job to deal with that sort of thing, not yours.

If anyone wants to discuss this, please address me off-line. We aren't going to talk about it here.

    Thanks.

I think the Maxima handles better than the Altima, independent suspension or not. Dindak? I don't like the clear lenses either on the Altima but the Maxima has them now too. But they're not as bad as the Altima.

Those 17 inch wheels look great. Has anyone looked at those though? They clearly have the distinctive Aurora "A" on them. I wonder if they made a special edition of them with the Oldsmobile rocket insignia instead of the Aurora "A"

Oscarz, please keep me updated on the hose thing. I'd LOVE to relocate mine. It's driving me crazy.

"It was redesigned as recently as 2000.."
The Maxima was restyled in 2000, not re-designed. The solid rear axle platform dates back 8 years to 1994, when the '95 model came out. Then, the 2000 model got new sheetmetal.

Also, back on topic, GM should have Olds displays at shows, since they still have to sell them for 2 more years.
  • jjpowell2jjpowell2 Member Posts: 91
There was a full display of the whole Oldsmobile line including an identical Intrigue to ours. The display, however, was tucked into the back corner of the event.

Have a date with the dealer tomorrow for another alternator swap....maybe 4th time's the charm? I'd love to see the one they take out to check the part #, but I know that won't happen. They'll also check into the LOUD rattle coming from the area of the front left strut.

On looks and power I'd buy this car again after going to the 2002 Auto Show unless someone gave me a blank check for the new Lexus Convertible!!!

Intrigue really does still look pretty good compared with what's out there. New Camry is ugly and Accord is bland and a dime a dozen. The only sedans I really like are the Intrigue, Maxima and maybe the Altima. Grand Prix is ok on the outside, but the dash needs to be fixed before I'd go back.

Anyone seen if the 02 Intrigue has an updated DTS stereo in it like the Alero?
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Did you mean RDS stereo? DTS would be cool though
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
I remember reading a Car & Driver review where they said after driving an Altima then a Maxima back-to-back, the Max felt pretty disappointing/archaic handling and chasis dynamic wise. I would assume the Intrigue with the NL sway bars/poly bushings and almost anything other than the Badyears for tires would be good as either of them.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
dindak - I think the Grand Prix has lost its auto climate control. Call me spoiled, I can't imagine owning another car without it.
  • yurakmyurakm Member Posts: 1,345
I was too lazy to delete and resubmit. You did what I had to do. Thank you!

When I saw the long line, it was already late to edit. Also, with wide monitors (19 inch, 1600x1280) I am using, the long line did not distort the text.

Just bought a '98 Intrigue GX for my teenager. 67K miles, not a scratch or blemish inside or out, garaged every night, was owned by a local couple in their 60's who bought it new in April '98 and who just bought a new PT Cruiser! Paid $7,500.

Anyway, they had every single service receipt since new, and the car has needed nothing fixed or replaced except what one would expect - oil, filters, tires, a battery, wiper blades. I was impressed, after driving several 3-4 year-old Tauruses, Regals, Grand Prix's etc. with 50-75K miles, at how well this car is still screwed together - not a single rattle or squeak, and it tracks straight down the road, still has tight steering and great brakes. I paid for Pep Boys to plug it into their computer and put it up on the rack for a quick inspection, and everything checked out fine.

This is my first experience with Olds - and probably my last. Too bad, because this appears to be a really good car.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
vcjumper : Yes RDS.. I'm drunk! Very cool feature indeed.

redline : I have climate control in the Intrigue and it used to be available on the GP also. Did they discontinue this year? I like the dual-zone feature (as my wife is always cold), but otherwise I could probably do with out.

TSchramm : The car is well screwed together IMO also. I have not had one rattle or squeak on my 2000 GL yet. Rock solid.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
Ya, I considered a Grand Prix but took it off the list for not having ACC. I'm really loving it this winter. Yeah, I'm spoiled too :-)
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
Add me to the spoil list! You never know how good it is until you lose it.
  • ketchketch Member Posts: 217
This a.m.. while the car was warming up (23 degrees out) in PARK, in the garage, began to see the headlites dim multiple times (lites were hitting the garage wall, so it was easy to see this).
My premis that it occurs when in Drive, super cold out (below 20), and when accelerating, was wrong. It stopped after a few minutes, and of course will do so when i enter the dealer's service area. Will wait alittle and monitor the problem before going in for a fix.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I admit the roads around here are pretty good compared with say Detroit or something. Only when I go downtown Toronto do I really experience bad roads, but that only happens 2-3 times a month.
  • buzzard4buzzard4 Member Posts: 43
I'm not the happiest Intrigue owner in the world, but I really haven't had much trouble with stray noises. Then again, before the Intrigue, we had a Saturn SC1, which was the undisputed king of buzzes, rattles, and general crappy construction. The fit and finish problems with our Intrigue are more cosmetic.

I also like the ACC, purely for the psychological effect it has with my wife. She is also constantly cold, and thinking that she has done something to magically make her side of the car warmer seems to work, even though the few times I let her drive, I don't feel a really noticeable difference.

While I'm here, a quick update on my problem with having no power steering at low speeds. I'm going on 2 months since having the steering rack and pump replaced, and the problem remains solved. The only thing I've noticed (or possibly imagined) is that the speed sensor may be calibrated a little differently, as the tight feel seems to kick in at lower speeds than before. As time passes from that mess, I'm beginning to remember why I liked the car. Of course, the looming bearing problem could put me over the edge...

Great car for your teen driver, just hope he or she is careful and doesn't get too many tickets as that car can easily induce high speed driving. Seriously though, it is a good safe car with ABS and traction control and they certainly won't have to worry about driving what everyone else is driving.
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
What a great parent you are! My teenager drives a 1990 Grand Voyager with 135,000 miles on it. This van is king of the hill when it comes to what Chrysler refers to as BSR (buzz, squeak, rattle.)
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
Imacmil - LOL! My first vehicle was a 12-year old 1978 GMC High Sierra pickup. The body was held together by Bondo and it had no A/C. But I loved it and it got me where I wanted to go. I can't imagine being a teen now and having a car as nice as an Intrigue!
  • TSchrammTSchramm Member Posts: 106
Not that I intended do spoil my kid with an Intrigue, but she also drives my younger child to school, and frankly, a 4-door, gold, Oldsmobile family sedan is less prone to be driven recklessly than, say, some cute little red coupe, which some parents think is the ideal teenagers car. It just seemd to make sense, and while I'm sure she would love a bright red Miata or something, she's actually quite pleased to have a 4 year-old Intrigue, especially since one of her friends has already pronounced the Bose stereo as "cool"!
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
"a 4-door, gold, Oldsmobile family sedan is less prone to be driven recklessly than, say, some cute little red coupe..."

Don't be too sure. Once she feels what that car can really do she'll be smokin' all those other teenages in "some cute little red coupe"! :-)

I will also heap praise on my '98 Intrigue, with 59,000 miles. I have not had to pay out any money on service for this car, although I am looking at replacing the original wipers any time now. I am really pleased with how the car is performing, no rattles (and I drive in Chicago!) and good handling with the Autobahn package. I stil have the original Eagle RSA tires but am looking to replace them with Firestone SH30 tires, probably this summer.

Nevertheless I am starting to look for a new car, as my wife's '93 626 is getting a little old. She will get the Intrigue as I do not want to give the car up completely. If only there was a new version of the Intrigue available! Right now a Passat 4Motion is top of my want list.
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
I am glad to hear about these '98 and '99 Intrigues without rattles and squeaks. I test drove a '99 with 37K miles before I bought my 2000. It had a front end squeak that would have driven me crazy within a week. Anything bigger than a tar strip would make it squeak. So far my 2000GX is squeak and rattle free at 31K miles but I did replace the wiper blades already.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
As far as I know, one should replace wiper blades every year, especially if you live in a colder climate with snow ect.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
During my last year in high school my dad gave me exclusive use of his 1973 Plymouth Valiant green on green sedan. Affectionately known as "The Valium".
It was so bad it was almost cool.
    Indestructible.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
ian18 - Shouldn't your wife get the new car? I bet she would feel really special if you got her a new one instead of your used Intrigue.
  • oscarz2oscarz2 Member Posts: 153
The blades that came on my 99 (new) were crap and needed replaced within a year. Got OEM replacements from the dealer parts dept and although they were about $12 ea (don't remember exactly but they are made in Mexico), they are much thicker than originals. It's been over a year and appears they will go a couple of more years. No streaking yet.
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
from day one. Maybe it had to do with something in the preparation of the car from the dealer. But the car was built 5/01 and purchased 7/01. So the weather couldn't have done but so much to wear the rubber. I usually replace my blades every 6 months. I can usually still see out the window but it creates a glare at night after 6 months or so. They really get worn down during the snowy months.

Over 12,000 miles on the 'ol girl (bought it with 11 6 months ago) and still tight as a drum. But I have GOT to get those Badyears off!!! I'm considering a Yokohama tire this time if I can't catch the Pilots on sale. Will also be ordering the strut tower braces this afternoon too. I'll be testing them out when I take the wife down to Baltimore Saturday. Can't wait!!!

Anyone know what it is? I can't tell by my monitor.

BTW on a different topic: sad to see that www.autoextremist.com has moved to a pay-as-you-read model. Not that it isn't worth paying for, but I think Peter has decided to charge too much for just a week's access to something that takes 5-10 minutes to read, and will lose most of his readers. If he did a monthly fee like Consumer Reports that might work out better. It is sad because I really like the site and it had some neat opinions.

They're supposed to be replaced every 6 months or more during extreme temperature seasons...

For those awaiting the outcome of our 4th alternator exchange, the dealer kept the car overnight. I suspect they wanted to check out the dimming/flicker problem themselves, but won't know if they actually drove it at night until we ask or check the mileage. They did offer a free rental car for our inconvenience. Should know more by the end of the day.

I had a blue 77 Cutlass Supreme Coupe/white vinyl interior with the 350 Olds motor in it my last year ('90). Was a fun boat.

Are they showing the Mazda 6 this year? Looks like a big improvement over the 626.

The more new reviews of this tire I read on tirerack, the more I think I might replace my Pilots with these when the time comes.

one2one - Which STB's are you ordering? GM or aftermarket?

vcjumper - I know you put on the GM STB's. Did you do both front and rear? How happy are you with them? Any fit issues other than a little drilling for the front? Do you notice better handling?
I would like to get STB's myself, but am weighing the various alternatives. I'm a bit nervous about the aftermarket bar's fit up front (p/s noise) based on comments by jg28 and oscarz2. The GM part sure has the price advantage, but any disadvantages that you have seen?
    Any info is appreciated.

I have 1 month on my 2002 (1900 mi) and loving it! Now that it has been broken in, I am really enjoying exploring the "turbo boost" at 3500 and beyond!
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I love it. If it drives like it looks, I may buy one. The current Mazda 626 is reliable but rather dull IMO. Mellenia is too expensive for me.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
I only have GM bar the back right and did notice a difference, it seems tighter back there but is harder to explain. I have another one for the front but have not tried putting it on. I will check sometime in the next few days if it touches the power steering pump line like the aftermarket ones do on the Intrigue.

The disadvantage of the GM bar for the front application is you have to drill holes. An advantage is the supplied bolts are designed to shear in an accident so the bar won't have any part in warping your chasis (though I suspect if you have to worry about that the car is totalled anyways). In the rear it is a no brainer - less than $20 so if you don't like it...
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Certainly doesn't seem to have a BAD angle like I think some other highly rated cars (i.e. Altima) have. It does look lower to the ground that the competition (as the Protege is in that regard) so it must have a pretty sport coupe like driving position.
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
Vcjumper- how about 17" dunlops? Let me know when you located the best price in town.
STB part #1245-6148, went look at it at dealership, on the computer it said is for the front; so front and rear are the same bar (for GM)?
