I think you did the right thing
It is too bad that dealers try to pull these tactics after you called them multiple times to verify the price..

Sounds like you are a smart shopper. I took my wife and child out when we were comparison shopping (drove all the different vans back to back, found the particular model and color we wanted) and then I emailed and called the next day (last day of the month) to get the best price. I also handled all the paperwork at the dealer by myself so my wife and infant did not have to wait (it took about 2.5 hours total).

Good luck, and let us know how things turn out!

You did it the right way. Test drive, go home and e-mail request quotes, get "APPLICABLE FEES" spelled out, and go solo to the dealership when you pick up the vehicle. If the dealer sees your kids climbing the walls, he'll know that you are vulnerable and want to get out of there quickly and will start playing games. See my post # 12358 about covering your [non-permissible content removed] and still getting the run-around.

I just confirmed and it does not include destination charge. Total is now 24,800 excluding taxes and title.

I also got a quote of 28250 on EXL-Res. Still trying to decide which one to get EX, EXL or EXL Res. I will make up my mind by tomorrow. EXL is quoted at 26800.

    Good luck on your purchase

    Hi Guys

I have a deal on new odyssey EXL + DVD for 29200.
I also have a deal on new PILOT EX (cloth) +DVD for 27000.

I appreciate if someone can give me some feedback.

Which one is a better car for a family of 4 with my wife as the main driver?

How much more room do I have for negotiation?

    Thanks

Think we all can do better on our prices as we head to the end of the year...I will be going into my local Honda dealer which is number 1 in the country in volume sales...I and a few other family members have purchased there in the past....will be heading in @ the 27th of june and I am looking to buy a 2006 EX-L..will make an offer of 26500..of course that doesn't include TTL..I think at that time that would be a reasonable offer from a repeat customer and besides..they will be looking to clear out inventory...most people buying an Odyssey buy the EX or Lx..no leather..I was told by one Honda dealer that they are the most popular so the won't pass up a reasonable offer on an EX-L so late in the model year (I hope!)...LOL...anyways...will be checking this board every day for others experiences and luck at their purchases

Here is the thing, I recommend you bring your wife and kids down and test drive them both back to back before you decide (if your wife is the primary driver she should really be the deciding factor).

That said, I think the Odyssey will be way more functional for a family of your size. Like most midsize SUV's the third row seat in the Pilot is not very comfortable and almost unusable for adults. The Odyssey will also save you some $$ at the gas pump. If you have infants or younger children the power sliding doors on the Odyssey are a great feature. Leather is nice with kids as it cleans easier, and the heated front seats will make you both happy on a cold morning.

As for price, if the above prices include destination then they look decent (although some folks seem to be getting better deals right now, but that depends on where you live and how many competing dealers you have).

    Good luck.

Just purchased an EXL w/Res and Navi for $33,638 OTD from Lanier Honda. That does not include a trade-in because they tried to low ball me and beat me down, so I just said pull the trade out of the deal. I had the car for $33,500. However, I messed up by picking a car that was straight off the truck w/no dealer add-ons. I ended up paying $129 + tax for the mud guards. Mistake on my part. Anyway, I am supposed to pick up the car tomorrow.

I just bought an EX-L w/ DVD this weekend. Paid a total of 29400, which included five separate dealer add-ons: Moonroof noise reducer, wheel locks, splash guards, rear cargo liner, and the cargo net. Breakdown was 29000 for van, plus 400 for the dealer adds.

I would also recommend the Odyssey over the Pilot. My wife loves hers.

BTW, the moonroof shield really makes it nice and quiet. At 30-40mph, you can hardly tell it is open. Even at 65mph on the highway, it is completely bearable.

I am considering a Demo Touring Odessey with 5500 miles, 2006 OTD for $34,247, is this a good deal?
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
If it's a base Touring (no nav), that's not a good deal. If it has nav, it depends on what you mean by OTD (i.e., tax rate, fees, etc., all of which can tremendously vary the total acquisition cost of a vehicle).

There have been recent reports here of Touring R&Ns selling for less than $35,000 (cost of vehicle only) and one last week that was less than $34,000.

Like ccompson's post above, if it's a basic Touring then it's not really a good deal. If it has R&N then it's good. You pretty much paid EXL with R&N price for a loaded Touring. Just make sure you negotiate for the extended warranty for peace of mind.

Most people got the fully loaded Touring with R&N for around $35k.

I went to the dealership today (Ohare Honda). I picked out the van, silver color for $26,500 (plus tax and title). Unfortunately deal fell through as I thought the trade in value quoted was almost $1200 below what I expected.

I like the dealership and would like to go back, but want to check couple of other places to see if I can get better value on my trade.

I am trading a 2005 Honda Accord LX, 4 Dr, 4 Cyl with 18,800 miles. I was offered $13,000. I was ready to deal at $13,750 as the lowest number.

Anyone know of a good honda dealership in the Chicago land area (suburbs).

    Thanks

Your trade-in seems really low.. Is it in good condition? Does it have an automatic transmission? If it has an automatic and is in "good" condition you should be able to get closer to 16K for it (KBB dealer trade-in value is 16.300).

Try taking your Accord to the Carmax in Chicago, they usually give pretty good trade-in values (very close to Blue Book Value).

The price of the EX-L is a very good price (you sure this includes destination?).

    Good luck.
  • momelmomel Member Posts: 4
    Thanks

I am living in dallas. I am trying to get the extended warranty 7 or 8 years. They did not include it in the 29200.
I may offer them 30000 plus tax and title for the car and extended warranty.
    Thanks again.
  • spk1spk1 Member Posts: 9
Thanks for the reply. EX-L price includes destination. I have this in writing from the dealer. My total excluding taxes was 26,6xx including title and doc fee.

I checked on KBB and yes, trade in was very low. my accord is in good condition and it is automatic. I had an accident (hit a pole) and had to replace the front bumber. I disclosed this to the dealer and showed the lifetime warranty on the replacement.

I am planning to go to Carmax, but the only issue is I will not get the Tax benefit of trade in which is 7.5% of trade in value, so unless carmax can offer more than 14k, I may be in the same overall price range. Unless I am missing something.

I like Ohare honda, but with the trade in they are offering, I am looking at taking it to another dealer and see what the net net price would be including trade in.

Thanks for your input and look forward to any other advise

  • dc_driverdc_driver Member Posts: 712
The tax benefit does make a huge difference.. Sounds like you are making a sound decision by looking around.. I am really surprised that Ohare won't at least meet you halfway on the Accord. I just traded in my 02 Nissan Altima and a local Honda dealer gave me KBB trade-in value on my car even though it also had an accident (back bumper, it was repaired like your but showed up on Carfax). I had to haggle a few times to get that price, but was pretty happy in the end.

Too be fair, you are also getting your EX-L for about $1K less than what I paid. It may be that the dealer is just playing with the numbers a little and trying to make the money on paper off your trade versus on the new Odyssey.

    Let us know what happens.
  • chirpchirp Member Posts: 194
O'Hare Honda is where I picked up my Touring-RES/NAVI on Monday for $1500 under invoice. They're good people and convenient for me. I'm selling my Sienna on my own simply because I refuse to get caught up in the "trade" issues. You never really know where you stand with the dealer as they are experts at number manipulations :D

I like to have my cars serviced where I purchase as the relationships have always worked out better that way and O'Hare Honda is close. You can pretty much count the Northwest side Chicago Honda dealers on one hand and you can go from door-to-door if need be, but I would pick one you are happy with and go with that. Sounds like O'Hare has given you a very good price on the purchase and maybe you should try and sell your Accord on your own and max-out the value by doing that. Taking it to Carmax is a very good suggestion since it is so new. Good luck!
  • spk1spk1 Member Posts: 9
I like the dealership too. I got my accord from them and get my servicing done there. As dc_driver said, with 26500 on EXL, they are just making up the difference via trade in discount.

I am planning to go to Carmax today and just sell the car, else I "may" go to Grand Honda. They are too pushy in their sales techniques which I do not like much. But, if it makes a difference or 1K, I will take a chance.

    Thanks

    Hi again

My final offer from dealership is EXL+DVD+backup sensor+7 years/100000 extended waranty for 30500+TTL+TAX.

    Any recommendation on that?
BTW, what kind of rate should I expect for financing 2/3 of the total cost? I live in Dallas.

    Thanks

I've recently emailed about 10 dealerships for quotes on the EX. Out of those places, 3 have sent me back quotes, and 1 sent a "VIP Certificate" to bring in to get their Internet pricing. I was looking at one dealership in particular, since they seem to be the only one in a 150 mile radius of me that has my color of choice in stock. Of the 3 quotes I've received, they've given me the lowest offer.

Odyssey EX $26,301.71 (this includes destination fee)
    Mud Guards/Wheel Locks $260.00
    Processing Fee $249.00
    Sakes Tax $804.32
    Dealer Bus. Lic. $53.12
    Online Filing $10.00
    Registration Fee $44.50

    Total Unit Price $27,722.65

Is this a decent price? Should I wait to see if I can get anything lower (the only reason I even requested quotes from other dealers) or is this about what I should expect to pay around here (southern VA.) The $26,301.71 ~is~ a little lower than the TMV pricing of $26,791, but a little higher than the CarsDirect pricing of $26,101.
  • dc_driverdc_driver Member Posts: 712
It seems decent, but I'll bet if you can wait until the end of the month (Memorial Day Weekend) you may be able to get it a little cheaper.

I was quoted 25,688 for an Odyssey EX (price includes mud guards, wheel locks, pin striping, and freight) from a Northern VA Honda Dealer (Hendrick) at the end of April.

Have you tried calling the dealerships that gave you the top 3 quotes? Usually your first quote is not your best offer..

At a minimum, I'll bet you could get them to throw in the mud guards/wheel locks for free...
  • luvmytwinsluvmytwins Member Posts: 4
Thanks for your response, dc_driver. I actually emailed Hendrick and it looks like I got the same exact offer from them that you did ($25,688 incl freight and add-ons.)

One more question (sorry, I'm new at this.). How do you present a competing offer to another dealership? Do you give the name of the dealership that made a better offer, or just the numbers? I want to go to one certain dealership, since as I mentioned they are the only ones anywhere remotely close to me that has the EX in Ocean Mist in stock. Even if they won't match the price (although I'm pretty confident they will) I'm willing to pay a little extra for my color of choice. Also, we're going away Memorial Day weekend and I was hoping to possibly have the van by then.

Do mind sharing what dealer(s) you've shopped and their prices?
  • dc_driverdc_driver Member Posts: 712
I would simply call them and tell them the truth (you have another offer that is better) and see if they will match or come close. I would not hesitate to give them the name of the dealership..

Good luck! BTW, I have an Ocean Mist EX-L and my wife and I love the color. I know in my area, Hendrick was by far the lowest price.

When I negotiated our deal, I simply e-mailed the other dealers and said:

I have an offer for $$, that includes the following options. (List X,Y,Z) We will be purchasing the car this week, so if you can make a better offer, please respond ASAP.

With that tactic, 3 dealers said, "no, can't do it", a couple matched, and one knocked about $50 off. I ended up with the EXL-RES for 28,941, with mudflaps, wheel locks, cargo tray. I got a great (well below invoice) deal.
  • tkm526tkm526 Member Posts: 4
I just picked up a Touring with RES/NAV for $34,134 from Castle Honda in Morton Grove. It was the only place that has my color preference in stock and all of the dealers would only REALLY deal on in-stock. Even so, it was the lowest quote period, plus my color of choice. Very easy deal and they gave me a very fair trade-in on my 2001 BMW X5, they came up a little from what they originally offered for the trade, so it was about $100 over what I walked in expecting.

The hubby and I have decided on an EX-L/RES and want to buy by the end of the month. Cash, no trade-in. I sent off several dealer quotes Thursday and so far have received only two quote--for 31,600 and 32,800! These seem high given the other prices (some below invoice) I'm seeing on this forum. Three questions for those in the know: a) is this a regional price issue? b)if so, should I consider buying in another state and drive the car back out to the NW? (realize that would mean paying TTL 2x, but saving 3K would almost make it worth it). Another alternative would of course be to just call every dealer directly and offer invoice (30, 500) . . . . Thanks in advance for the help.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
While reported Seattle prices are high compared to many places, I don't know that you have to go any great distance. Expand your search to the south (i.e., Oregon) and east (i.e., Yakima and Moses Lake). There's always a store that will sell for less.
  • gimbygimby Member Posts: 1
I purchased an EX-L w/ NAV&RES this week in Illinois for $30,240 (not including TL but does include destination charge). That being said, it gets delivered next week to the dealership so I won't be getting any dealer add-ons (mud guards, etc) included in the price. We got our choice of colors, though, which made it worth it.

I'm trying to decide whether to purchase an 06 now, or to purchase an 06 or 07 towards the end of the year or next spring.

I'm wondering what the price increase will be like between the 06s and the 07s -- any predictions out there?

From what I can tell.... the invoice prices were

    2005 EX - $25,367 (different car site) + $515 dest
    2006 EX - $25,552 (source: Edmunds)+ $550 dest

Total % increase from 05 to 06 = $220 increase or 0.8% Doesn't seem like much of a price increase, but I'm not convinced my 2005 invoice price is accurate.

That said, it seems like the 2005s were moving above invoice, and it's much likelier to get an 06 for at invoice or maybe even up to $1,000 less.

Grand Honda in Elmhurst IL has an EX price on their specials for $24,601 (which supposedly includes destination). I read here that the best price achieved was $25,000 even... but now there's the extra rebate (maybe it was in effect then, but not known?)

Anyway, we could get the van now, or wait... our area has a special with 4.9% financing for 60 mos which is attractive.

I think I'd bite now at a $25,000 or less price... I think we could do this. I'd only look locally at this time.. if it gets to be too much of a hassle to find our price we can wait.

If we wait for the 07's, I also think I could probably get close to invoice, although it may take more shopping around and the big dealer hunt.

Any opinions on buying now vs. waiting until next year? I'm having baby #2 at the end of June, so if I'm going to shop now, it will either be this month, or possibly Aug/Sept.

Do you think the finance deals will get lower than 4.9% for a 60? ELOAN is currently at 6.15% for a 60. Although it doesn't make much of a difference in the monthly payment, the rate difference saves about $500 (if I'm calculating right).

Will keep you posted on pricing if/when I start those conversations with our local dealers.

Silver EXs seem to be easy to find on the lot right now, too.

    Thanks for listening.

i'm shopping for an EX ody right now and have had offers as low as $24, 469.00 including destination. The lowest I've seen on other forums ( in socal) is $24, 360.71.

The color selection seems narrow though...lotsa silvers out there.

and do it before baby #2...who wants to buy a car when you're battling sleep deprivation...trust me as a father of 2 young'uns. :)
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Honda typically raises prices little from year to year. However, they had a mid-year raise in MY05 (which pushed me into buying in 2/05). The '05 figure you cite is probably accurate as an end of the year price that was higher than when the '05s launched.

While it's hard to say what the future market will be, it seems fairly safe to assume that prices will not get appreciably better. Of course, a year ago few would have predicted where there are now! Loan rates are headed up and I feel lucky to have 4.25% (which didn't seem all that great at the time).

My feeling is that market forces may drive prices up as folks abandon large SUVs.
  • dc_driverdc_driver Member Posts: 712
If you can wait to see what improvements they make for the 07, it might be worth it (although the difference between the 06 and 07 should be minimal. There are rumors of an improved transmission).

However, the 07's will not be cheaper, and I doubt you will be able to find an EX much lower than 24-25K even after the new model is out. The Odyssey continues to be a strong selling minivan and I doubt Honda will have too many on the lot when the 07's come out. Interest rates are going nowhere but up (at least according to everything that I have read). 4.9% is pretty good right now on a 60 month loan, I shopped around at local banks and my credit union three weeks ago and the best I could get was 5.6%.
  • tkm526tkm526 Member Posts: 4
Also, I posted earlier about a great price with Castle Honda in Morton Grove, IL. I told them my best price from all the others and they beat it by $100 on a Touring). They also were the only in the area with the color combo I wanted.
  • duperduper Member Posts: 127
I agree, once the 07 are out, there will not be too many '06 left and color choice will be limited. You may end up have to get the 3rd or 4th color or pay more for a newer model year.

I went through my credit union and gets 4.85% for 60 months.

    Honda could even match it.

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum but I need some help. We are looking to purchase an EX-L RES and Nav within the next week. We live in south texas (Corpus Christi) therefore dealerships are limited. We are looking at making a trip up to san antonio. Anyone have any good luck with dealers in the San Antonio area. We currently have a quote of $32174.00. Is this a good deal. :)
  • dc_driverdc_driver Member Posts: 712
    lawrencedg,

Does this price include destination and other dealer fees? The price that you were quoted is about $500 over invoice (invoice on this model is 31,673 including destination) and is not a bad deal, but many folks (including myself) have been able to buy an Odyssey below invoice.

I am not too familiar with Honda dealers in the San Antonio area and which has the best deals, but if you have not already, I would email as many as possible and then email the dealers that offer you the best offers and see which one can get the lowest.

I would definitely get a firm out the door price before you drive up there and recommend you speak to the Internet salesman on the phone as well.

    Good luck!

    Hello,

Correct me if I am wrong, but from what I read the Honda dealer profits by the dealer hold back , and/or by trying to get you to buy as far over invoice as possible (?)

    My Real example:

    I bought a 06 Odyssey for $26700 + $550 freight +5% MD tax + $50+/- fees ==> Out The Door at $28650

The dealer invoice is $27700 and Honda was offering a May 2006 $500 dealer incentive..... AND the dear gets 3.3% holdback of the MSRP which is $31345, ==> $1000

So if they sold it to me for $26700 which is $1000 under invoice, then they only made $500 profit from the special incentive... correct?

Sanvan and others follow this topic.

I reported we bought a EX-L at Penske for $26,358.43 ($28,824.46 OTD) on May 6th. I was “lured” to Penske after reading sgolvan and myhondas posts here. The buying experience was smooth and sale person were friendly. I recommended them here after coming back from dealership the same day.

But all these changed after a service trip at the same dealership. The great buying experience turning BAD! It is a long story and still not finishes yet.

Briefly, when we bought the van, sales can only find one key and missed the others two. So 4 days later, I drove 40 miles back to dealership and spent almost 3 hrs to program another two keys. When I was there, I got the service print out and found the van had service records before I bought it. I asked someone at service department and was told the van had been in body shop for paint repair! I was very unhappy but have no time to deal with them because I was late to a meeting (they spent almost 3 hrs for program the keys but told me 1.5 hrs the day before, I did not plan that much time).

Now I am dealing with them for the issue and have no result yet. That is why I have not post this bad experience so far. But at this time, since someone ask the Penske, I have to say something in case others get trapped as I did. I will not recommend Penske Dealer to anyone on this forum at this time. I was trying to contact with Sgolvan and myhondas, but no success. I found both of them just registered on Edmunds.com on May and only post several post about the Penske deal…….I have my own guess whom they are, but I will not post it without future evidence.

Now I am dealing with the dealership for this issue to see what will come out for a solution. What I can think about is either get a replace van or an 8yr/120k extend warranty. Are these a reasonable request? Anyone has other suggestion?
  • sanvansanvan Member Posts: 21
Atuzai: Thank you very much for your reminding. And also very sorry to hear the bad experience you had from them.

I send a quote request of EXL RES to them, they come back as 284xxx. It is far away from myhonds 27563.58.

I am trying to contact with myhonds and sgolvan, but got the same result as you.

Thanks again for your helpful imformation.

    edsnooper:

    Congratulations to your new Odyssey.
What's your price before the TTL? Can you also tell me where did you got this deal?

    Thanks in advance.
  • luvmytwinsluvmytwins Member Posts: 4
OK, here's the deal. I guess I jumped the gun a little because after only receiving a few quotes on the first day, they just started pouring in at once the next day. The original dealer I was trying to do business with has given me a final quote of $25,700.00 (incl. freight and mud guards/wheel locks) + TTL and $249.00 processing fee, for an OTD total of about $26,800.00. This dealership is about 90 minutes away, but all my local dealers have basically said they couldn't touch that price. So I started getting quotes from a little further away (a few in PA) and got two lower offers of $25,250.00 and $25,052.00, each + TTL but no processing fee. When I gave these to my preferred dealer, they said they couldn't go any lower than what they gave me. So it seems this is the best I can do anywhere remotely close. I've seen lower on these boards from other places but I guess here in VA is a different story. I think I'll take this offer while it's still available and I hope I'm getting a good deal.

Also, has anyone financed through the dealership with less than excellent credit? We have a pretty short credit history which hinders us. Our credit union (Navy Federal) won't even give us a loan that big. We have a smaller loan through NFCU on the car we have now, bought before we had twins with two carseats and a double stroller and a diaper bag the size of a small country :-) But obviously the perfect payment history on that loan makes no difference to them. So I'm hoping we can get financing through the dealership with a rate that's not too terrible.

Many dealers are now saying they can "Let you have the Ody at invoice". And try to make it seem like that is a good deal.

The most anyone should pay at this time is:

Invoice - $500 (Dealer Cash) - 3% of MSRP (Holdback) = Dealers true cost

You can add a couple bucks if you feel bad about the dealer not making any money.
But if you walk into a dealer next week (Tues or Wed) and he needs a unit to make his numbers he will accept the above offer.

    All this assumes
    1. CASH DEAL
    2. NO TRADE

If you finance the Van or trade the dealer will try to make money on each.

All this talk about Invoice or above is just too much at this time in the year.

    luvmytwins,
I am also in the market for an EX in VA. The best quotes I have gotten on the EX are

    1) $25,500 incl. destination but no accessories (Colonial Honda)

    2) $25,509 incl. destination and mud guards and wheel locks (West Broad Honda).

I tried to get them to go lower, but neither would budge. Here is the breakdown for the OTD price at West Broad:

Odyssey EX- $25,509.86 including destination & access.
    Processing Fee- $249.00
    Tax- $772.77
    Dealer Bus. Lic- $51.02
    Online filing- $10.00
    Registration fee- $44.50

    Total OTD- $26,637.15

Basically all the numbers above were the same at colonial, but they would not include accessories in their $25,500 quote. They tried to give me the old "we are already selling this van at a loss @ $25,500" line.

Hope this helps you get a better deal.

dwh522, West Broad is the dealership I'm talking about! Oh no, are you the other one looking at the Ocean Mist? LOL That would be funny! Your price is just a bit lower than mine:

    Odyssey EX A/T $25,700.00
    Mud Guards/Wheel Locks Included
    Processing Fee $249.00
    Sakes Tax $778.47
    Dealer Bus. Lic. $51.40
    Online Filing $10.00
    Registration Fee $44.50

    Total Unit Price $26,833.37

The $200 difference isn't that much in an almost $30,000 car but I wonder if I can get them to give me that price. Thanks!

Sorry, but I do not think this is realistic for the majority of buyers and dealers. There may be a handful of folks across the US that get that kind of deal (right place, right time) but this is just not realistic to me (and I am not a car dealer). A dealer has to make money somewhere. About 99% of the dealers in Northern VA would laugh at me if I proposed the above. It took me almost a week of negotiation to find a dealer that would sell me an EX-L below invoice (I got mine for $560 below). Your deal would be something like $1500 below invoice and I just do not think this is realistic without a rebate.

Like I said, folks can shop that number around, and they may even get lucky, but I do not think that is very realistic on a Honda Odyssey...
