Sticker price is about as good as you can do here. Some dealers are asking for as much as $1k over MSRP. Also, dealers like to add-on what is sometimes called a "Dealer Enhancement Package". Which is a fancy way of adding pin striping($100), Scotchgard($300), weather proofing($400), undercoating($200), tire well trim($100) for an additional $1100. If you pick one before they come in the door, you can tell your sales person you're not interested. They may try to push you that it's their standard procedure, but if you push back hard enough they'll sell it without the unnecessary add-ons.

I have a 2002 EXL-NAV on order for delivery between Oct. 18 & 20. Just got an email from a dealer 200 miles away stating:
"I have a Silver 02 EXL-R ready for deliver $27,190 delivered to ....". He is even willing to deliver it to my location!
Is $3K below MSRP even possible???? I have a call into him.

I'd venture he misquoted. That's MSRP for the EX.

I am in austin and tried to get below msrp. I found david mcdavid in houston at MSRP less $500(talk to chris stimple- tell him you "know" jim in austin) He is trying to arrange delivery to Mcdavid here for me. I am sure he can do it for you in DFW, too. I havent really hammered the local dealers to match, but I called a newer dealership, CleoBay in Killeen, spoke with Tonya at 1877 253 6229 x108 and she agreed to match. She was also able to give me a build date of late this week!! Plus she threw in that very valuable "paint sealant (wax) and fabric protectant (can o scotch guard). I am sure she would do same for you price wise for a referral. Let us know what happens.. and good luck

I just bought a 2002 EX from Wilde Honda, Waukesha, all of their vehicles contain a rust proof/paint protection/stain resistant package from Auto Armour. For this "Add-on" they charge $1,000 over MSRP. For a comparable vehicle from Zimbrick Honda in Madison, you must wait 4-8 months, however they sell it at MSRP, if you want the same protection package the cost is $499. I had a 94 Voyager that needed work and wanted the new vehicle now so I paid more for the vehicle but got it right away.

I have a new Honda Odyssey for sale, it is an EX with Navigation. I have about $700 worth of options and the Plates are new a $500 cost. Options are, Splash Guards, Front Deflector, All Weather Mats, Reart Cargo Liner. It is Mesa Beige and has only 3,000 miles on it. We are a private party that is selling it only due to a work situation. Don't want ot sell because it is a great vehicle and the Navigation system is excellent. We have only had the vehicle less than 3 months and was driven only 1.5 months. It is perfect, same as new. We are asking less than invoice at $28,500, this is a more than $1,800 savings from new.
My question is: Does this seem like fair pricing? I thought it would sell right awy but I have only received about 18 calls over the last 3 weeks and nobody has even came to look. If anyone has interest it is on www.autotrader.com

Went in last night and drove an EX Ody. I was very impressed to say the least. We initially wanted the LX and the salesperson quoted us $1000 above MSRP. Sounded okay, but we have now changed our minds to the EX and he has quoted us $2000 above MSRP which I think is way too much. Am trying to negotiate $1250 over MSRP for the EX as last years TMV per edmunds was $1250 over MSRP.

Anyone know where I can get one closer to MSRP in the Sacramento, CA area??
  • csandoval1csandoval1 Member Posts: 5
Didn't see your post, but just called Mel Rapton in Sac, CA and they do indeed sell for MSRP. They actually have a Silver EXL on the lot and they are going to call the people on their list now. If they can't get a hold of anyone, it just might be mine. Keep your fingers crossed.

I live in NJ, and in order to buy a 2002 EX at a reasonable price, I had to buy from Philadelphia Honda. They came down to MSRP plus fees of less than $200. No other gimmicks like dealer added equipment, window VIN etching, etc, etc. I was told my Ody would be ready in two more weeks. Although other NJ dealers came down to msrp, they tacked on fees of a few hundred dollars, or they could not deliver the vehicle in a timely manner. I worked with Joe Louis, Jr., who was straight with me on the deal. Every thing so far was done over the phone/fax. So far things are progressing smoothly.

I would like to thank those who posted their replies to my earlier posts when I started on my shopping. Got some good leads that eventually led me to Philadelphia Honda. Anyone who is discouraged with high priced NJ dealers should give Philly a call, and post their results.

I am in the Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri area (Nebraska specifically). Looking for a 2001 or 2002 Ody EX without navigation, leather, or entertainment. Anybody know of a dealer in this area who will deal over the internet and has odys in stock?
  • csandoval1csandoval1 Member Posts: 5
Just bought a Honda Ody EX last Thursday. Absolutely love it!! Paid a bit over invoice, but didn't have to wait. I called about 4 or 5 dealerships...the last one I called actually had what we wanted on the lot...a silver Ody EX. Couldn't beleive it. I called my husband and we drove 20 miles to pay for it and pick it up.

Try the Honda dealer in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (quite close to Omaha) - I think he has 1 or 2 2002s (said he has a SS EX). He even offered to sell it at MSRP and drive it down to Omaha at no additional charge (but he did not have the MB EXL-NAV that I was looking for).
The person who contacted me was Heath Rodney - his email address is: honda@dtgnet.com. His telephone # is: (888)372-1984

Found a 99 EX with 34850 miles today that looked in to be in excellent condition. It looks nearly brand new inside and out. Bought the CarFax report on it and nothing came up. I can have it for $23700...what are the problems I can expect to encounter (I don't have time to digest the 1600+ postings. Should I get the Extended Warranty? Should I look around? Edmunds lists the dealer retial for this vehicle at $25697 (clean) or $27011 (outstanding).
Consumer Reports recommends staying away from the 99 Honda. Reliability being a big concern.
Advice from '99 owners (or others)?

Geez, you can buy a 2002 lx for a couple of hundred dollars more and have a 3 year newer vehicle, many improvements, more standard equipment, better resale, and no mileage. Other option might be to purchase a Canadian Odyssey-you are close to the border and there are companies that import them, convert the speedo's and sell them with aftermarket warranties for less than you are paying for the 1999 lx.
  • ukrickukrick Member Posts: 66
I think $23,700 is a little high for a 99EX with nearly 35k miles. A 2002 LX stickers for $24,690 and the EX w/o leather for $27,190. I personally would go for a new EX. It's another $3,490 more than the used 99EX, but would only add another $70-$80 a month to your payment. Plus you'd have piece of mind with a 3yr/36k warranty. I don't know what your financial situation is, but I'd go for a 2002!

csandoval1- Did you mean to write that you paid a bit over MSRP? A bit over invoice is hard to believe--if it's true, what part of the country are you in?

kalajian--I also live in Portland and I've looked into buying from a Canadian dealer, but they've all responded back that Honda doesn't allow them to sell Canadian cars to US customers. Do you know the names of any of these companies that import them? Thanks.
  • kalajiankalajian Member Posts: 43
I see them advertised all the time on ebay. I think the company web site is platinumautos.com or something like that. They are not a Canadian dealer, they are a U.S. dealer who buys them in Canada, converts them to mph from kph, and then sells them with an aftermarket warranty in the US. Their price is a few thousand below U.S. Honda dealers msrp. Check out the other ody sites on the web for more complete discussions regarding Canadian purchase. also quite a few posts about one month ago here on this thread regarding this issue.
  • todd48todd48 Member Posts: 22
Thanks for your response. I took a look at the platinumautos.com site, but their price was at MSRP. As you suggested though, I'll take a look at Ebay and look back in this thread.

Can you please give me the web sites for those other Odyssey sites you mentioned? I'm a newbie to the Odyssey sites, as I currently own a Mazda MPV.

    Thanks in advance!

Hey All, I'm shopping in the SF Bay Area for a 2002 EXL and am noticing that dealers are starting to show signs that demand on the Odys are slowing down. I did a direct email to 35 dealers in No. Cal last week, and am getting multiple calls for Odys on site. Prices haven't moved just yet (range still MSRP to $2000 over), but soon to follow...??

I'm taking delivery next week on a 2002 EX-L in Upstate NY. Price is MSRP. Looking to get extended warranty 5 yr / 100K. Price quoted after haggling was $800 for Honda Care extended warranty.

Has anyone taken delivery on a 2002 odyssey at less than MSRP? Also, does the $800 for the 5 yr/ 100K warranty seem reasonable?

Live in Seattle..had to fly to Spokane and drive it back. Seattle dealers are ripoffs, and wanted MSRP+2k. No negotiation.
I paid MSRP+750, and got steering wheel cover and cargo tray thrown in. Not a bad deal compared to the puget sound area! I also got immediate delivery as they had it instock..:-)

I just purchased a 2001 EX Odyssey, and I'm in the market to purchase a Honda 7yr./100K Mile Warranty. I've called several Honda dealers in several states to quote a price. I was wandering if anyone has a dealer in mind that is selling such a contract for less than 1000.00.

    Friends,
Put down your price guides and take a step back. I personally don't care what the "market value" is of a used car; the question is: Does it make sense for me to buy it for that price?
A used car or van with N miles for just a few thousand $ less than I can buy a new one for? One-year-old Accords for $1500 less, 3-year-old Odysseys for $4k less? That's crazy.

Buy the silly thing new, enjoy the warranty and the peace of mind that comes with knowing it hasn't been abused.

I agree that these are very well put-together automobiles, but they don't walk on water, and they generally are not worth the prices that they fetch used. A friend of mine bought a well-kept, 9-year-old Camry w/ 70k miles for $5k. That was a good price, as the market goes. Two years and $1600 in maintenance-type repairs later, he's not so sure it was a good idea...

I'm living Portland, Oregon area. I'm looking for a white '02 EXL Odyssey but could not find any dealers in the Oregon that has the car. Please give me some suggestions anyone.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
hungyen-I'm having the same problem. St John's had one with Navi and some other options on Friday, but it was silver.

Most dealers in your area will have a modest mark-up on the car. I'm almost at the point of recommending having one shipped from Southern California.

I guess that I missed the post by Barry5 before it was deleted. I take it that they had some Odys on the lot.

It will be nice when the supply catches up with the demand. I have never had an Ody on the lot for a customer to test drive and buy. Supposedly, this Spring it will happen when the AL plant is cranked up to full speed. I have been told by our rep that Honda will watch the supply carefully, like they do the Civic and Accords. Theyaork on a 30 day and 60 day supply respectively.

iirc, "some" meant two. Some demos to test would be nice - I'm still somewhat surprised I got to drive a '99 LX twice back in Dec. 98 when I was van shopping.

This forum has been very helpful to me,so here is my buying experience for other's info
Picked up my 2002 LX yesterday after three week wait. Dealer sold to me at MRSP no haggling. Total documentation and titling fees only about $70.
I did decide to buy HondaCare (I kept my last van for 11 years/135K miles). The best I could find on the internet for 7y/100k mile was $905 with $50 deductible and $1030 with $0 deductible and the dealer offered $1100 for the latter so I gave him the added profit.
The dealer got the better of me by offering window VIN etching/antitheft which I was unprepared for. Charged me $199. Later I found that you can get those etching kits on the internet and do it yourself for $25. The dealers' included a 5 yr policy which provides $2500 in case your car is stolen but not recovered. Reading about this window etching I come away feeling it is a good idea but not worth this price. Anyway, other readers be forewarned. To their credit this dealer did not hassle me with rustproofing, detailing and other unnecessaries.

First, I want to thank everyone on here for their opinions and information on pricing. It was very helpful in my search for a new van (we bought a 2001 Odyssey EX in February). We got the Van for $300 UNDER MSRP (after paying $150 doc fee), adding only car mats and the rear cargo cover as options.

If you are looking for a good shopping experience and deal on a Odyssey, I would definitely recommend Ric Sherry from Honda Cars of Monroe (just outside of Charlotte). 1-800-768-8836.

He made the buying experience VERY EASY. He isn't a pushy salesman-- very straight shooter. He had all the paperwork ready for us when we arrived and gave us all the time we needed to check out the van.

It took about 2 1/2 months to get the car once I put the deposit down (which is what he told me it would be). I drove 150 miles to get the car and would do it all over again if I could.

He even called 3 months after we bought the car to see how things were going...

If you buy from Rik, please feel free to mention my name (Steve Becker from Raleigh).

Good Luck on your buying experiences!

Where I am (NY City) the NY Police Dept. offers vehicle id number window etching (which reduces your comprehensive (fire & theft) insurance premiums by 5%) AT NO CHARGE. I suspect that police dept's. from other municipalities offer the same. Paying a dealership hundreds of dollars for what is free is what is known as being ripped off.
  • odd1odd1 Member Posts: 227
The Austin Texas police dept. does it free several times a year also.
  • jleeyapjleeyap Member Posts: 4
I thought the idea of this forum was to advise and get advice and not to be sneered at! Yes I was ripped off on the VIN etching. I live in a small town and had not previously heard of the local police dept offering free etching. I hope other readers will be forewarned when they buy their own vehicles.

I think I want to by an Ody vice a Sequoia (due to interior size, safety, price). However, the last van I bought was a Plymouth through a broker at dealer cost. I now live in DC. Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase an Ody at a dealer cost price point. The best I've seen, thus far is $700 over invoice

I have a 2000 EX Nav with 65000 miles on it. I do alot of traveling between Pennsylvania and Florida. A dealer in Florida offered me a 2002 EX Nav for $11000 plus my 2000 Nav. Not sure if that is a good deal or not. Other than high mileage the van is in good shape with no problems and has a 5 year 100K Honda warrently. Any advise.

jpmbgood, Try Colonial Honda in Petersburg, VA about 120 south of DC. I have my 2002 EX on order there and have been very happy with their service. MSRP + 99.00 processing fee. No unwanted accessories. Lived near the dealer for 2 years and always had my Accord svc'd there. Call Belinda in Sales 1800-564-9836 or 804-733-0700. Pls tell her Sgreen sent you.
    Definitely worth the trip.
  • attymedi8rattymedi8r Member Posts: 1
You should be able to do several thousand dollars better by taking the time to sell it yourself. Remember, the Honda warranty is transferable only to a private buyer and is therefore a strong selling point and provides peace of mind to the private buyer. The warranty does not transfer back to the dealer on a trade and therefore will be ignored in the dealer's trade-in offer. If you do go for the 2002, don't wait too long. The opening of the new plant in several months will reduce prices for used Odysseys, I think. I'm selling my 1999 EX privately later this month when my 2002 EXL-RES arrives. Good luck.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Good idea about using the transferable warranty as a selling point.
