Called a dealer in SJoaquin County (Lodi) who swears they have not sold anything less than $1k over MSRP. He says the Stockton store has the same pricing (same owner).

Found another dealerin LA who had exactly what I was looking for - with several Odysseys in stock and was asking $2k over MSRP!

I admit I'm not haggling much, but I do say I'm ready to plunk down $$ today and the say there's a long waiting list of buyers out there.......

You have a name for me?

You need to go through the Fleet or Internet departments. Try using email and hope you get the right person. I do it for a living so maybe I get them straight to the best price right away, I like to think that, anyhow ;^)

Sorry, thragus, but with a $200 doc fee, you paid $500 under MSRP. And what and how much were those "at cost" accesories? And what NC dealer did you go through.

I am in norhtern ky/cincinnati area and I am looking for a new van. I am hoping to get a good deal on a trade in of a 2000 Honda Accord EX V6 with 19,000 miles on it.
Does anyone have any good dealers in this area?? Is it true that dealers are selling vans at 1000.00 under MSRP???
    Thanks for any info!

The accessories were my choice and not pushed by the dealer. I needed cross bars for the roof rack: price to me was $152 ($195 not inc install on Honda site). I got the mud flaps for $94 ($189 on Honda site). Also decided to get the cargo cover and cargo tray. Did not save any money on them. Pretty much the price on the Honda site, which are $99 a piece. Expensive for basically a piece of rubber, but what are you gonna do, they're custom. tj, I know technically I didn't pay $700 under MSRP, but when I figure in accessories I wanted and waived doc fee, it feels like it to me. Pretty much every dealer in NC charges $199 to $279, which is pure profit, but it is still something you have to negotiate.

    Per hondapartsforyou.com:

    Cross Bars = $ 83.00
    Mud Flaps = $ 57.00
    Cargo Tray = $ 57.00
    Cargo Cover= $124.80

Cost of Cargo cover per Honda is $159.00. All prices are quoted as shipped to the US.

One way or another, they made their money on you.

You did fine, especially in your region.
  • thragusthragus Member Posts: 4
My van is still on order and will be for awhile. I can always drop the accessories and buy from the site you mentioned. The Cargo cover on Hondacars.com does say $99, when you go to customize and add interior accessories. The $189 for mudflaps, and $195 for cross bars, I got from the accessories catalog at the dealership not the Honda site like I had said.

Still sounds like a good deal for what you wanted, thragus. I think the knock-off of MSRP will make up for or beat the accesory stuff, so congrats. I called about 15 dealers in NC for our Silver EX-L, Burlington Honda charges no doc fee but I paid MSRP. No accessories. Waited about 7 weeks.

Just an observation, but it still appears that non-leather EXs are perhaps in the least demand (or the greatest supply relative to demand), and can therefore be haggled over a little more than the LX or the EX-L variants. I suspect this is because the LX goes to the really cost-conscious buyers, and the EX-L goes to those who have more money to spend. The EX only goes to those who don't want leather. The $1500 premium for leather doesn't seem too bad, so if people are in two minds over leather and can afford an EX, they get an EX-L (looks more 'classy' for the money).

Got the 2002 Odyssey EX (no L, wife did not want it) for $600 off of the sticker - paid $26,590 +TTL in lieu of $27190 + TTL.
Fantastic van, great ride ( acceleration, speed, noise level). In my opinion, the next best Siena is a very distant second.

Went shopping for an SUV with my sister and brother-in-law last Friday and after riding in their mini van decided to investigate buying one. After a number of visits to see the different models available, I went home to investigate my options. I finally decided that the Honda was the best mini van around. On Saturday morning I started calling around and found that it was impossible to locate one and the expected wait was 30-90 days. One dealership, Hendrick of Charlotte, said they had one in stock due to a cancellation. As it was located near where we were going to shop, I decided to "stop by". Much to my suprise sitting in their parking lot was the exact model (EX-LN) and color combination that I wanted. I rounded up the salesperson I had spoken to on the phone and told him to sharpen his pencil and give me the best deal he could. As there was no trade-in and it was a cash deal, they offered to apply the $500 deposit from the cancellation to the MSRP. I now am the proud new owner of a EX-LN Ody. I cannot believe how well it drives and how luxurious it feels. After reading the postings on this Forum, I cannot believe how lucky I am to have found the van so quickly and at a competitive price. While I was waiting for the paperwork to be completed, 3 other people wanted to buy the Ody.

Took delivery on 2002 Odyssey EX-L on May 5. for $28690. Go online and submit to as may dealerships as you can in the area and be patient. THEY WILL COME AROUND. I started submitted at end of Jan. went back and forth with several dealers and finally three within 50 miles came around last friday. One caveat, check your email frequently. They won't last long. Good luck.

Good for you. I had to fly down to SoCal to get my EX-L last November at MSRP. Fingers crossed that the dealer doesn't try to sell you any dealer add-on accessories at inflated prices come May 5.

Don't want to gloat but very easily just bought a red 02 Odyssey EXL/RES for $29190 vs. $30190 MSRP. Price includes destination but not taxes, license fees. No add ons whatsoever. Found an east side Cleveland dealer with several on his lot and just got lucky I guess. Maybe the pipeline is filling up a little.

Another good site for accessories is: www.handa-accessories.com. They have the cargo cover for half list price at $49.95 plus around $8 shipping. Overall though, hondapartsforyou.com has better prices though. sgergen and tj_610, I called back the dealer and am dropping the accessories. Will order off the internet for what I want. I will save another $200. I think I can handle a screwdriver for installing them. Thanks y'all.

belmarin - You are lucky. Good job. Did you happen to work with a guy named Ed?

    Hey!
We've been shopping for a ex-l with res for about 2 months. The best deal so far is 29,295. How does this sound? Is there anybody out there in this area that has gotten a better deal? THANKS!

I am waiting on an EXLRES and wanted to get the tow package. Has anyone had this installed on their Odyssey? What price did you pay? I checked out the websites above and the tow hitch w/ tranny cooler kit costs $430. Is this a good price? I understand this would be a do-it-yourself install. My dealer gave me an accessories list w/ prices and it seemed a bit high. I think it was like $900. How about aftermarket options? If anyone has had any experience with this, I would appreciate your comments.

As of this afternoon, I am an owner of a brand new Granite Green EX which is scheduled to have after-market leather seats installed on Tuesday.

We walked into the dealership on Thursday and they just happened to have some on the lot. After MUCH haggling on the price, we managed to get it for MSRP + $400 for dealer installed items such as mud flaps, pin stripe, paint sealer, etc. (talked them down from $1400). The after-market leather seats were $1200 and it looks & feels much nicer than the factory leather, although we did have to give up the seat warmers.
We also managed to talk them down from $1295 to $900 on the extended warranty without much of a problem.

Sarsah- after MUCH haggling, you bought a vehicle for MSRP? Sheesh. After paying dealership $400 for mudflaps (pinstripes and paint sealer are useless profit squeezing mark-ups), I doubt the dealer lost much sleep that night. The truly obscene act is that the dealer would ask $1400 for a couple of mudflaps in the first place. I would have preferred the mud over the dealer's offer.
  • sarsahsarsah Member Posts: 3
sbpceap -- I must disagree with you -- we got more than mud flaps, but I couldn't remember all the items off hand, hence the "etc.". We also got the cargo liner and fenderwell trim. We would have paid for the pinstripeing anyway since we felt that the vehicle looked kind of plain without it, but I do agree that the paint sealer is a needless markup.

By "much" haggling, I mean that my husband was on the phone for less than an hour with 3 different managers at the dealership (they were all calling us). We have always, in the past, had a fixed (employee) purchase price on a vehicle, so this is our first time 'dealing'. Everyone was pleasant to us and we felt they were, for the most part, honest, (had they been rude, arrognat or blatently dishonest, we would not have purchased from them).

Due to our circumstances, we are not able to drive to another state to get a better deal. We are happy with what we paid.

I got an Odyssey EX for $200 under MSRP and got free mud guards (they say it's $149.) on March 9. No wait. I feel it's a good deal in Kansas City area.

The market is definitely getting softer. Made the following deal last night in Ohio on an in-stock unit. Bought an EX-L RES for $29,190 ($30,190 MSRP) plus $65 doc and title fees. Also included was $500 (retail value) worth of accessories at no charge. Trade-in value for my '99 Ody EX was $18,500 (48K, fairly nice but not great condition). Since Ohio gives sales tax credit on the value of a trade-in , I'll be out the door for under $30K when it's delivered on Saturday.

I had no really planned this purchase (and did minimal comparative shopping) but the numbers were, at least for me, simply too good to pass up.

Has anyone had experience in this area with a dealership lately? I would probably want the EX, I want leather, but not for what they are charging for it. Also I want the CD/cassette player combination, which i don't believe I can get on the LX. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Just received an email response from a Georgia dealer who said that Honda issued a memo about 7 days ago telling dealers NOT to use after market leather seats because of potential problems they can cause with the side air bags.

Dont know if this is true or not - perhaps someone at a Honda dealer can confirm this memo. But be forewarned when the dealers try to get you to take a cloth model because their 40% leather allocation is already sold.

Sorry to be ignorant, but just what is a Honda Pilot? The last few posts I read mentioned it, but I haven't heard of it before.

I've seen aftermarket leather that even has the SRS logo on the side. I seriously doubt that dealer.

This week I received two e-mails from Georgia dealers telling me they have lots of Odysseys on the lot and are ready to deal. One dealer is local to Atlanta who wouldn't give me the time of day when I was buying last summer. "I have 10 on the ground right now," he e-mailed to me (and umpteen others in his broadcast).

The other is in south GA, who worked a reasonable deal and even delivered the van.

So it looks like Atlanta, once the proud king of the $2000 "mandatory appearance package" is finally seeing supply catching up.
  • hschultzhschultz Member Posts: 42
I don't suppose they gave you any indication of what they're willing to accept any of these 10 or so? I'm interested in an Odyssey when we can begin negotiating in terms of "$XXX over invoice".

I think the Ody is a lovely minivan, and I'd like to own one. However, I'm not so enthralled with it that I'm willing to pay $2k over MSRP. The new '02 MPV (ES variant) is quite nice, and for the price (currently available for $1k UNDER INVOICE), it's a no-brainer for us (we don't need the largess of the Ody with a 4-month old and a 17-month old). Nevertheless, all things being equal, I'd still be happy to pay $1k over invoice for an Ody EX-L. Fortunately for us, our SUV lease isn't up until late Dec, and I'd like to think that this type of deal will be available on the Ody by years' end. Also, with the new '03 Sienna due out in Jan, I'm tempted to wait another month or two.
  • greg44greg44 Member Posts: 5
Like I said - I have not seen the memo but something else happened this week which makes me believe it is true -

another Atlanta area dealer suggested we buy their Granite Green EX and swap out seats for after market leather - BUT the dealer could not do this themselves anymore. Instead they would cut us a check for the cost to have this done and we would have to go to the aftermarket provider and have it done. The salesperson said this was to remove Honda liability in this area because of the issue with the side air bags.

Believe it. Dont believe it. I would like confirmation or denial from someone who would have access to a Honda memo but I dont expect anyone will come here on this message board and go on the record for an issue like this. But for me - I will not buy an EX and put in after market leather.

I am going to contact Clark Howard here in Atlanta about this matter. This is a serious consumer matter if true.
  • greg44greg44 Member Posts: 5
I have been soliciting prices around Atlanta this week. Here are the comparative drive out prices I have received so far on an EX-LRES in Granite Green:

Phil Hughes Athens (Mr. Wilcher 800-969-0347) $240 below MSRP ($29,950 + 198 doc +21 tag/title +6% sales tax = $31,977.88) No indication as to whether this includes the interior/exterior package or not. Most quotes have included it.

Ed Voyles Marietta (Mr Dreisbach 770-701-5584) MSRP ($30,190 + 298 doc + 42 tag/title + 6% = $32,359.28) This price includes the interior/exterior package = floor mats, splash guards, fenderwell trim, interior / exterior protection package with a 5 year guarantee, and pin stripes. Without the package they might have come off the price a few hundred dollars.

Carey Paul Snellville MSRP = $32,339 includes their "Honor Society" with free loaner car, free set of replacement tires or lifetime oil changes free, free scratch/dent repair (small ones)

    Milton Martin Gainesville MSRP + $179 for the interioor/exterior package = $32,424.00

    Curry Honda Chamblee MSRP + 179 = $32,541

    Honda Carland Roswell MSRP + $400 = $32,783

Hennessy Honda Woodstock - ridiculous $33,102

As you can see - it is definitely more competitive and most dealers are now around MSRP so prices have definitely come down. I expect they will continue to drop over the next month or two as well. These are still $1500 to $2000 over invoice so you might want to wait a little longer or leave your name and number and hope for a cancellation they cant sell. I dont think you will get much better than $1000 over invoice though which is about $1000 under MSRP.

Well I went to the dealership last week to get down to business with the salesman, and he gave me 29,190 for a price. I was quoted 2 days earlier a price of 26,890.00 with a 4.9% for 60 mo.
I asked about that and he came back to the table and agreed to it. I will be getting a 2002Ex Ody for 26,890 off the lot. I think I got a good deal what do you think???

I sold my 2000 Accord Ex v6 to a friend for 17,500. 1500.00 more than the dealer was gonna give me..
  • punocchiopunocchio Member Posts: 1
OK, I caved. I can only take some much dickering. Wife and I gave in and bought a redrock pearl ex for msrp plus $200, including paint protection, crossbars and mudflaps. Got a good interest rate too. Wish I had fought more to dump the doc fee of $299. Makes my stomach churn to think I paid retail. Although after greg44's message maybe I did about average.

Question: Shouldn't I get some kind of written guarantee/warranty on the teflon paint protection? None was offered.
  • dschmitt1996dschmitt1996 Member Posts: 9
Chris Assaf at Mike Patton in La Grange said "all will be sold at MSRP with no additional markup". I paid MSRP in July (techically $250 under and a $250 doc fee, but they can call it whatever they want) in much tougher conditions. So I would expect you could bargain.

(I continue to highly recommend this dealership for the excellent pre-sales experience and the absolutely easy delivery experience. They drove it to my door from 100 miles away. If you do buy from them I'd appreciate mentioning my name since like most dealerships they do pay for a referral.)

The other e-mail was from some salesman I contacted once over the net. I think he's at Gwinnett Place Honda, but he's never bothered to include that info in any of his e-mails. He didn't specify price beyond that they "are finally discounting the vehicles."

Greg, I noticed you didn't list the new Honda dealership near the Mall of Ga. They were the worst of all, the usual runaround coupled with odyssey demand arrogance, but maybe they've been humbled, too.

You are right - they and Hennessy were the worst. Hennessy REFUSED to deal claiming a birthright to upcharge. They wanted $1200 over MSRP after my wife spent several days discussing MSRP pricing with the sales rep. In the end they reneged on their representations.

I also received the following quote yesterday from a very friendly and knowledgeable salesman:

Heritage Honda Rome (Kip Bishop 706-290-1646) $140 below MSRP and no charge for exterior package = $32094.28 ($30049 plus $189 doc plus sales tax and tag/title with no charge for exterior package)

Many others have now offered to drop their price further. Several have EX-LRES on the lot ready to sell. Several others have them coming in at the end of the month. A couple said they cant get them until May.

For an EX-LRES with the exterior package included you should be at $30,150 to $30,389 before sales tax and tag/title - maybe less as inventory appears to be accumulating on some lots.

I found them willing to discount the EX and EX-L a little more than the EX-LRES.
  • greg44greg44 Member Posts: 5
This is what one salesperson said about the exterior protection package:

"Your new Honda will include floor mats, splash guards, fenderwell trim, interior / exterior protection package with a 5 year guarantee"

I would assume they would provide you with written documentation for the warranty.

I paid MSRP last year, and I'm still finding the dealers in Northern California are charging over sticker for this car. I'm glad to see others did better than I did, but I don't think it's worth the effort to go 2,000 miles to get a car. I did travel 400 miles, though! ;^)

Other quotes will be posted as received.

For those of you who don't want to haggle with dealers, I checked the carsdirect.com web site and their price for an EX is slightly below MSRP. (but the price for an EX-L is $800 above MSRP).

Has anyone used carsdirect? I have not, but have heard positive things about them.

Went by my credit union yesterday and saw a letter from the local Honda dealer offering $500 off Odysseys for credit union members until further notice. This supports idea that price will be falling.
Production in both plants 38,200 since 1 Jan
last year 32,582 in same period

Of course supply affects price. $1,000 off soon to be common.

Has anybody bought an Odyssey in Bay erea ( San Francisco, San Jose )below MSRP lately ? tell me what dealer ? I'm tired of being quote above MSRP.

Right before I went down to Ed Voyles in Atlanta, I was given this website. I dealt directly with J. Dreisbach (770-701-5584) and the expierence was great. My wife wasn't too keen on a mini-van, but he explained how it's not a mini-van, it's an Odyssey. She got the whole sales pitch, and now she can't wait for our new car. :) He showed here exactly how each seat moves, reclines, comes out, folds down....All of it. Took the time and explained all the ins and outs.

I would recommend Mr. Driesbach to anyone that wants to shop for a Honda.

I got my EX-LRES in Redrock Pearl for 32056.00 out the door.

    30,190 + 298 doc + 42 tag/title + 5% = $32,056.00. And this was ordered. I'm not too upset with this deal.
