mfullmer, please take your Bravada to a different Olds Dealer today!! He is feeding you a line of garbage!!! There are TSB's out on the mirror issues for over 4 months, there is a TSB out on the transmission problem as well. As far as the seal goes, there is no redesign on it that I know about, and even if there was, they should still replace the split seal with what is currently released!!! This kind of customer jerking around is why I get so upset with dealers. Obviously your dealer is NOT interested in service, because he/she/it does not respond to your problems. PLEASE Go to another dealer, even if it is a Pontiac/GMC or a Chevrolet dealer, they can and will help you. Also, please report the old dealer to the CAC at the number listed in your owner's manual. Believe me, the corporate staffs want to know about these kinds of people!!! mfullmer, there is definetly a TSB out on you issue as well, maybe Tlauro's site has it listed, if not, send me a message back and I will look it up on the SPO internal site and give you the number! Best of luck people, and mfullmer, don't back down!!!
Ok, first I'll explain the dealer situation. The dealership I purchased the vehicle from is about 15 miles from my home in Atlanta, GA. They also own another dealership around 8 miles from my home. That is the one I was taking it to since I purchased it and they NEVER were able to even diagnose the problems. Finally, after speaking with GM Customer Service they called the dealer I bought it from and put us on a conference call. They are the only dealerships within 20 miles of my house (Despite what the Olds site says, all of the other Metro Atlanta dealerships have closed their stores). GM CS told me that I COULD NOT take it to another GM dealer until ALL of the "area" Olds dealers closed.
Here is what the dealer told me. He ordered some things so I really don't think he's jerking me around. Regarding the mirror motors - He found the problem and the fix but was told that he could not order the parts because there is no part number at the moment (he has done this fix before and was able to order the new motors but now isn't). The same for the rear seal. There are NO rear seals anywhere near as everyone is out of stock and cannot order.
One good thing - the "transmission" problem that I noted they could not find was diagnosed. This guy (Service Manager) was good enough to drive my vehicle himself yesterday evening after talking to me. He found that it is the encoder for the All-Wheel Drive system. Unfortunately, they were not able to order that part either.
One thing that makes me think that he is, at the very least, telling me what he was told is that they are going to replace the steering wheel stereo control when it comes in (and give me a loaner) but still cannot order the other parts. It would seem if he was just trying to blow me off he would try to do it all at one time.
Anyway, at least I finally have people who don't just write "could not duplicate problem" under every complaint.
rcbaker1: were you in full sunlight when this happened? there was another post that mentioned instrument failure when the car was in the sun. I wonder if the electronic odometer if affected by the failure. If so, the GOVERNMENT would be interested. Drive in the sunlight and freeze the odometer. No wonder my gas mileage is so low.
I'm not sure I remember the sun situation precisely, but it was around 7:30pm, and the car had been parked towards the sun only a few minutes, so I doubt that it was the cause. The temp was probably over 90F.
The Odometer was not affected.
I could not find a TSB that looked relevant on the tlauro site or the edmunds list; so if anyone (gmdrone?)knows of one please speak up. I am skeptical that the dealer will try to fix this when I cannot demonstrate the problem.
I am one of the poor souls who has a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer that sounds like a leaf blower and looses power when I start it up. I have had it to my dealer twice and have had the clutch fan replaced. The problem still has not been corrected. Today the Trailblazer was particularly bad, so I contacted my dealer again. The Service Manager said that he has discussed this situation with GM and they told him that this is the way the SUV was designed. Therefore, there is no problem and thus there is no fix. I find this incredulous! I can't believe that I have to live with this horrific noise and lose of power for as long as I own this car.
littest: I hope they gave you a very large glass of very fine wine to go with the BS they fed you. I find it amazing that someone would admit to designing an intermittent circuit. Ask them precisely how often the fan should roar like a leaf blower, then complain when it doesn't and make them "fix" it so it does. My old 2001 TB fan roared when the engine was getting hot. It was accompanied by a loss of power. At least it was predictable, annoying but predictable. My 2002 TB fan will roar once in a while. When it does, I just gun it and go. It is easier to do it that way after you buy the extended warranty. Let them worry about it later. When the engine blows, I'll buy a Honda Pilot or an Infinity QX4. Same money.
Envoy SLT - 5000 miles The air conditioning has never seemed particularly great to me (at least consistently). At times it seems adequate, other times less than mediocre. Now, it's out completely. Seems to be blowing that telltale "muggy - outside air smell" air only. I'm taking it to the dealer tonight. Any information that you guys have to arm me with is certainly appreciated! Although, I hope not many have experienced this. Yuck!
Has anyone converted their mirrors on an Envoy SLE to the SLT type ( the ones with Chromic Mirror on drivers side and Turn signals)?
I purchased a set on ebay, mainly to get the chromic mirror feature on the drivers side. The mirror controls and and turn signals work fine but I can't get the chromic mirror to work. Is there some wiring that is not included in the base model?
I've tested the mirror (1.5 volts) and it darkens as it should. Yet it will not respond along with my inside mirror, indicating and internal problem.
The shop manual shows a direct thru wiring from the door thru the rear fuse block and up to the rear view mirror. But I haven't chased down all the wires yet.
Anyone done this? Is there a shortcut to get it to work?
If you don' have the inside dimming mirror, then the outside one will never recieve a signal to apply power! All of the circitry that is necessary for the function of the outside mirror is contained in the ISRV mirror, including the photocell that commands the mirror circuts. If you have the ISRV, then the wire in the mirror harness is either not powered, (broken or shorted or not connected). I would believe that the harness that carries these wires would be the proper one, however all body harnesses are built for specific VINs by the vendor these days, so it is possible that your harness does not contain that wire because it was not factory ordered with the electrochromatic mirror. If that is the case, you would have to provide the power to the mirror head and the signal and power to the remote mirror head.
Has anyone had this problem with there speedometer, was cruising along 40/45 mph in a 45 speed zone looked down and it showed a steady 70. After stopping at the next light it started operating normal. All the other gauges were normal. I have 30,000 miles on my Envoy and this is the first time I've had any problems with the gauges.
First of all, thanks to all who contribute information to this board. I picked up my '02 Envoy (Summit White, med Pewter, 1SH, 3.73 RAR, Sunroof) on 6/l2 and am LOVING it!
It has a build date of 5/02 so hopefully all of the previous issues have been addressed prior to my Envoy being built/shipped. I haven't had any of the issues dicussed here previously, so I feel lucky so far.
I ordered some great all-weather mats from Mats4less.com with no shipping fees. They fit really nice. See them here:
Also, I ordered and installed a really cool stainless steel grille insert. It took less than 20 minutes to install and virtually no tools are needed. The grille fits over your existing grille. This is the least expensive place I found it with no shipping costs:
One thing that I have noticed, actually the only thing so far, is that there is a "click" noise from the driver's seat when I step out of my Envoy. Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions/solutions?
Just wanted to post a follow-up. Left the car with the dealer and he said that they could not reproduce the problem and that the air temperature met factory spec. Hopefully, it was just a fluke. My wandering mirror problem is now fixed and the license gasket installed (thanks to the board). Has anyone had an issue with the rear license plate scratching the car? The dealer had to actually bend the bottom of the plate "up" and paint a few small scratches. He said..."small design issue".
Took the Envoy on a 800-mile round trip this weekend and it performed as expected. This thing is joy to drive. Got about 21 MPG on the DIC over the life of the trip. After about a 2-week hiatus, the roaring leaf-blower appeared after sitting overnight. Guess I will just have to live with it. However, since it seems to be every 2 weeks, this may provide me the opportunity to have the dealer diagnose. That's the old news.
The new news is, after being parked outside in the sun on Saturday, I opened the rear hatch and was greeted by a loud pop. Everything seems to be in proper condition, and I have the license plate bracket gasket, so it wasn't that. Has anyone else had this happen??
Otherwise, no other complaints. Added the GM bug deflector before the trip. I would hate to see the amount of guts on my windshield if I had not had it.
The front bumper of my Trailblazer has developed a 1/2" high bulge on the top surface. The bump is halfway between the center of the truck and the left headlight. I can press down on the plastic but it springs back into the warped position. I loosened and re tighten the mounting bolt, but no success. This is no sign of any impact (not even a chip in the paint) on the bumper.
The vehicle was built 4/02, has 4K miles, color is metallic red. The vehicle is out in the sun 20 percent of the time. By the way, I live in Phoenix, the temperatures are now about 105-110 degrees F during the afternoon.
Anyone else with this problem, and how did the dealer fix it?
Other than this bulge the truck has been perfect, I am very happy with my purchase.
I have experienced the same speedometer problem that you have. My Envoy has 20,000 miles on it. I was travelling at 35mph and noticed the speedometer was reading 80mph. When I sped up to 40mph the speedometer read 85mph. All the other guages were reading correctly. I pulled over and shut the car off for about 10 sec. After restarting, the speedometer worked properly. This has only happened once so I chalked it up to a computer glitch.
After three trips to the dealer i finally got him to admit that the rattling in the front end was not NORMAL. He say's the Envoy has a problem with the intermediate shaft in the steering column, they have been replacing it but sometimes it does not cure the noise.GM is trying to find a fix but have come up with the solution yet. Does anyone have this problem and have you been able to get it fixed?
jwinky: I left my TB in the hot sun opened the rear hatch and found it would not go all the way up. Worse yet, the plastic panel that holds the upper brake light assembly had loosened up. Its stuck on with some type of adhesive. When I tried to drive this way it came off completely and was dangling by the brake wires. I had to disconnect it and take the panel off. It got dented. The dealer said he would replace the panel on warranty. Waiting for the part. If your fit was close it might have been the popping sound you heard. I would check it closely for how it fits and take it back if too close.
My 2002 Bravada has had a slight pull to the right since the day I drove it off the lot. During my first service visit, I had the dealer realign the front end. The vehicle drove much better, but it still pulled to the right. Today, I took my Bravada in for the mirror and gasket fixes and asked them to look at the alignment again. His reply was that ALL these vehicles are setup to pull to the right. It's designed this way so that if you fall asleep at the wheel, the vehicle does not veer into on-coming traffic. Question for the group, does your triplet (especially Bravada owners) pull to the right?
My understanding of a vehicles alignment is that if there is a crown in the middle of the road or the road is flat, then the vehicle should steer straight. If the crown of the road is on the ditch side, then the vehicle will pull to the left. Vehicles should be setup to handle a crown in the middle of the road or a flat road.
i took delivery on 6/7 Envoy XL with the 1sk pkt the truck is sweet. but today had my first problem came out of a store the truck was parked for 5 min the most . the truck would not start. Towed it back to the dealer they said there was 3 error codes one being with the air load leveling system the 2 others he didnt say so the truck has 560 miles on it and it is sitting at the dealer. i hope i know more tomorrow by the way i did have power for the radio and lights and stuff gauges were working too didnt even get a clicking sound just mnothing when u turn the key.
I had one big bump on the top of the plastic bumper because the center screw/fastner was missing. The body shop fixed that but now I have two smaller bumps on each side of the center screw/fastener. When you press down it almost sounds like there is faulty glue under there. I have seen new TB's sitting on the dealers lots with the same bumper problems. GM really has some bad glue with all the bumpers, baffles, 3rd brake lights, head liners, and trim pieces falling off the triplets.
Oh, and I could be completely wrong, but the line about all of the triplets being set up to pull to the right (if you fall asleep) is one of the lamest lines I've ever heard of from a dealer. I wish you could have got that on a video camera.
I've heard that in tons of forums on here everything from the Pilot to the mercedes topics! It's a classic dealer excuse. The only trucks that might pull to one side or the other would be ones with recirculating ball steering as opposed to the more common rack and pinion.
I wanted to let everyone know how things are progressing with the project as pieces are finally coming in. The Borla exhaust has shipped and will be here Thursday. Two intake systems are on the way as well (S&P and Volant). I have a Poweraid TBS, but don't know if it is compatible with either intake. Still working on chip companies... Kenwood is the audio sponsor and they have provided a powered woofer and their best 7" speakers (components up front, coax's in rear) to bump up the factory Bose unit. A California Dream rear spoiler is coming also. The 18" AT Italia wheels and tires from the Tire Rack are on and look/perform fantastically. I have a few other goodies that are awaiting installation (Bosch plugs/wipers, Ross rear obstacle sensing system and wiper fluid heater). BTW, I had a Denali style grill on (powdercoated black), and I removed it in favor of the stock grill painted body color black instead. I'll keep everyone informed far ahead of the article release date this fall.
Hi! I'm new to posting here, but have been reading through the past posts and have found some interesting information. We bought our Envoy in Feb and until recently have had no problems. There hasn't been anything about our Envoy that I haven't liked. But my new rig is now in the shop and has been since last Monday. We started to hear a high pitched huming noise from the rear end at about 4000 miles, it has 4600 miles on it now. The sound would stop when you took your foot off the gas. Last Tuesday I called to find out what was wrong. The gears in the rear differential were torn up. They said it had been "put together wrong". The service rep said that he would call when it was ready. By Thursday and no call, I called them. I'm told that they can't locate any parts, none in the warehouse, so they have to "make" them and I shouldn't expect to get my Envoy back until this Wed at the latest. That Friday my husband calls and they tell him another storey. The parts are being expressed in and should be here on Monday and to call on Monday. I called yesterday around 1:00 and the parts weren't in yet. I'm told to call back later in the afternoon. I call and get no answer so I leave a voice message. Another service rep calls back and said that the parts won't be in until Friday. My personal opionion is that we're being jerked around and the parts weren't ordered in the first place. We call our Salesperson who was upset that we hadn't called him prior to taking the rig in. He said he'd check on it today. The Service Manager is suppose to call back sometime today and explain why we've gotten several different stories on where the parts are. Hopefully he'll be able to pin down when the parts will be here. I've seen in other posts that some parts have been pulled off existing Envoy's at the Dealer. What do you think the chances are that I may be able to have this done? We're on vacation and had planned on heading up to the mountains in it. Now we're just waiting to see what they are going to do.
My TB has/had very slight pull to the right from day one. I put about 1 more pound of air in the R-front tire than in the L-front and that pretty much neutralized it. Now on a flat road it goes straight. You also might try swapping the two front tires. Sometimes the alignment is fine but it's a tire causing a slight pull. BTW according to all the tire manufacturers these days it's OK to reverse the rotational direction on radials.
I too am having the steering problems with my 2002 Bravada (5000 miles). Does fine if you go straight, but once u are in a slow sharp turn, things almost grind to a stop. When this happens, I also hear a vibration noise coming from the front of the truck. Is this all coming from the problem with the transfer case or is it a totally new problem? By the way, I have an appointment to have it looked at on Thursday. When I asked the service guy over the phone what he thinks it is, he said that the wrong fluid was used and that the fluid in the transfer case needed to be changed. Is this an accurate fix or just temporary? Does anyone know the true fix??
Also, I have notice that the body molding at the bottom of both front doors looks like it is pulling away from the doors. Is it normal to have gaps there, because I am able to push it in flush with the door. Also, is anyones front bumper loose? I can move the entire front bumper on my Bravada up and down.
Another question; anyone notice rattles coming from the exhaust assembly...is there a fix that I can tell the dealer?
Would appreciate your guys opinions and help.......Thanks.
Hi there. I posted here a while back when I was shopping for Envoys. I have since decided on a Trailblazer LTZ and I have found a good one.
My problem is that it has an older build date 11/01. From what I have read here I'm a little nervous about getting a lemon. Also- why would a car with 3 miles on it still be sitting at the dealer after 6 months?
Am I being paranoid? Should I just shut up and buy it?
It sounds like you have the binding problem. There's a problem that occurs with the Encoder Motor on Bravada transfer cases, and my service advisor said that it usually occurs between 5000 and 7000 miles. The first time it happened they reprogrammed the encoder motor, it worked for a few days, and then the problem came back. The second time they replaced the encoder motor. I've only had it back for two days so I don't know if that has fixed it but we'll see.
Don't let the dealer tell you that it's normal - it's not. The first one I went to told me "that's the way SmartTrak works" Tell them to call their GM techline to find the fix. If they try the reset and relearn route, ask them to place the encoder motor on order just in case. By the way, this must be happenning frequently because GM didn't have any in stock - it took two weeks to get the part into the dealer. Think it's a design problem???
The front bumper on My Envoy is also loose, I too can move the entire bumper, and it’s been like that since day one. Also, has anyone having problems with the transmission hesitating to downshift while going uphill? Sometimes I have to floor the accelerator in order to get the transmission to downshift, it feels like it can’t decide what gear to use. I haven’t brought this up with the dealer yet, but I have a feeling I’m going to get the “It’s normal” routine.
My molding did the same thing. The molding on the passenger door started to lift near the bottom corner. I had my service department remove and replace the adhesive strips that hold the molding on. It's all better now. It was probably a bad adhesive strip or dirt on the paint during installation.
As for the front bumper... get use to it. It was designed that way. I took mine off to examine the design. I think I have a solution to secure it better. Currently, it's secured to the vehicle with 9 push pins and 2 push brackets. The bumper pivots on the 2 push brackets, hence the up and down motion. My plan is to fastening Styrofoam to the metal bumper, behind the plastic bumper. This would eliminate the air space between the plastic bumper and the metal bumper, providing some stability or a resting point for the plastic bumper. I don't want to interfere with the air bag sensor that resides behind the metal bumper.
Yes, you should be worried if you buy any GM product that has not been on the road 2-3 years. GM is a big bureaucracy like the govmint and it takes them a long time to debug a new product. No way would I put my loved ones in a new "accelerate by wire" GM vehicle!!
As the name implies Pluto5, you're way out there...I have the LTZ and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Yea, Its the first year in this "Triplet Line" but with forums like this and the info provided here by concerned people, we can all get rid of that "First Year Scare Junk". I Love my LTZ and the way people look at it as I go by, guess they like the looks too.
gmdrone: I have been somewhat critical of the G.M. software engineers recently. I just received the most recent issue of TECHNOLOGY REVIEW. It is a tech magazine written by the engineers at MIT. The July/August issue has an article dealing with the same issues I have been bringing up. Notably: Why Software Is Bad. The article should be mandatory reading for G.M. software gurus as well as other software types. I bring this up only because the triplets rely so heavily on computers which only do what they are programmed to do. We are seeing new problems now, speedometers registering higher speed than real, encoder motors loosing their programming etc. Perhaps your engineers would be interested in visiting www.technologyreview.com . It is good reading.
envoyowner wrote: Has anyone had an issue with the rear license plate scratching the car? The dealer had to actually bend the bottom of the plate "up" and paint a few small scratches. He said..."small design issue".
When I got my Envoy, I noticed that the license plate plastic frame was rubbing the paint, so I removed the black dealer frame and threw it away; it was a cheap ad. But the license plate still touched the paint. So I solved it by getting 1/4" thick nylon washers at Home Depot and using those on the top 2 screws to make it standoff from the paint. For the bottom, where there are no screws, I used two stick-on vinyl bumpers like are used to protect furniture, etc. I stuck them right over the bottom holes in the plate. They make the bottom of the plate standoff about 1/4", and the vinyl touches the rubber inserts that are already present. Luckily I did this before there were any scratches. On another note, I had the license housing gasket put on this week. It was the first one my dealer's bodyshop had done, and it looks like they did a good job.
i posted 2 days ago that the Envoy with 560 miles went dead dealer said they found a 10 am fuse to be the problem it is in the fuse box next to the battery # 22 it is an ignition fuse all is well for now see what happens
Thanks for the info triumphbobk...called parts department at the dealership and he admitted that the encoder motor problem is a big issue and that parts are backordered because of the supply vs demand issue. He told me that it could take up to 6 months to track down the part.....is this true? any way to find one sooner?....if it does take that long, I am doing more damage to the truck by driving it?
I own a 2002 bravada and have had all of the problems listed in this group regarding the bravada. I have had to have the rear gasket installed. The mirror actuators replaced and also now the encoder motor. I brought my vehicle in on monday last week for the mirror fix and on that same day they ordered the encoder motor. I got a call about 3 days ago from the dealer telling me the part is now in. So for them to tell you that it will take up to six months is wrong. I have friends that work at the dealer where I bought my car. I asked how did they get it so fast. They told me that when they ordered it they had to give my VIN number and that a certain group of VINS is getting all of the ones that come off the assembly line.
They had told me that it wouldn't be in until July 1 and they had it last Friday. Maybe what john9907 said about the VIN numbers that are more susceptible being treated first is true. Give it a shot. If they won't help, call the Oldsmobile help line and confirm it with them. I wouldn't want to risk damaging the transfer case by driving it any more than I needed to.
Picked it up on 06/17/02, black fully loaded (except for DVD and running boards, dealer ordered a pair for me). Squeak when driven over bumps, ceiling adhesive not to good, pressed on ceiling, glue stuck, squeak stopped, nice. Turn on AC I hear a hiss coming from under hood, stopped, opened hood, coming from AC area, not very loud but you can hear from the interior and stops when AC is turned off, any idea what this could be? Pump? Compressor? Leak? Normal? Called dealer said to bring it in..I'm going to wait about a month and see if I need to add to the list of problems. (fingers crossed) Thanks in advance... Rating: A+, best truck I've ever driven and I've driven a few. Pretty, comfortable, roomy, toys, quick. I'll update as time goes by. Thanks to all I've learned alot prior to purchase by reading the posts...
I paid 36,000, for every option except DVD and Running boards. With the tax 39,000. Dealer showed me the invoice of 34,000, plus I added alarm and anti-theft devices probably another 2,000, which made me feel 36,000 was invoice...MSRP was 38,000..... Any opinions?
Now that summer and humidity are here in New England, I have noticed that when shut off after having air conditioning on, the condensation from the system drips on the exhaust system. Drip, sizzle, drip, sizzle . . . Other than sounding like barbecue cooking, I guess I don't mind UNLESS this is going to cause damage in the future. I would assume that water dripping on a hot exhaust system component is not a good idea. I have told my service manager to look at it . . . of course he said it was normal -- I asked him to double check that it was and to show me exactly where all this dripping and sizzling are taking place. I am also going to get the dealer/service to fix the chattering rear end on left hand turns . . . locking differential. I have the TSB on the subject and we shall see what happens.
I had a problem with mine actually working the pushpins loose. The dealer epoxied all of the pushpins in the closed position and replaced the cables that hold the bottom corners with braided steel vs. plastic! They said they had a TSB for the old Jimmy's/Bravada's/Blazers that was exactly the same. The fix really works, and I have no play in my lower front fascia anymore!

Added pics of my Step Hitch which fits nicely on my LTZ. There's also a pic of it on an Envoy from where I got the idea

A few others have sent in their pics as well. Be sure to check out these cools rides at:

The new news is, after being parked outside in the sun on Saturday, I opened the rear hatch and was greeted by a loud pop. Everything seems to be in proper condition, and I have the license plate bracket gasket, so it wasn't that. Has anyone else had this happen??
Otherwise, no other complaints. Added the GM bug deflector before the trip. I would hate to see the amount of guts on my windshield if I had not had it.

Thanks, Rick
My understanding of a vehicles alignment is that if there is a crown in the middle of the road or the road is flat, then the vehicle should steer straight. If the crown of the road is on the ditch side, then the vehicle will pull to the left. Vehicles should be setup to handle a crown in the middle of the road or a flat road.
Oh, and I could be completely wrong, but the line about all of the triplets being set up to pull to the right (if you fall asleep) is one of the lamest lines I've ever heard of from a dealer. I wish you could have got that on a video camera.

Anywhere you plan on taking a bling bling Envoy will not need a wiper fluid heater!

My problem is that it has an older build date 11/01. From what I have read here I'm a little nervous about getting a lemon. Also- why would a car with 3 miles on it still be sitting at the dealer after 6 months?
Am I being paranoid? Should I just shut up and buy it?
Thanks guys,
Travina
Don't let the dealer tell you that it's normal - it's not. The first one I went to told me "that's the way SmartTrak works" Tell them to call their GM techline to find the fix. If they try the reset and relearn route, ask them to place the encoder motor on order just in case. By the way, this must be happenning frequently because GM didn't have any in stock - it took two weeks to get the part into the dealer. Think it's a design problem???
Good luck.

Has anyone had an issue with the rear license plate scratching the car? The dealer had to actually bend the bottom of the plate "up" and paint a few small scratches. He said..."small design issue".
Thanks in advance...
Rating: A+, best truck I've ever driven and I've driven a few. Pretty, comfortable, roomy, toys, quick.
I'll update as time goes by.
Thanks to all I've learned alot prior to purchase by reading the posts...
Dealer showed me the invoice of 34,000, plus I added alarm and anti-theft devices probably another 2,000, which made me feel 36,000 was invoice...MSRP was 38,000.....
Any opinions?
