I was curious if they specified the exact location of the ground trouble. The dealer had to replace the electric steering column in my 2001 due to a noise coming from it and they replaced the driver's seat module to see if that would take care of the problem. The problem is as most others have, when I put the key in the ignition, either the seat or the steering wheel does not move back to position it was in prior to me pulling the key out of the ignition. Pressing the memory button makes all well.

If anyone has any advie, I'd like to hear from you.

Other than this very annoying problem, I really love the car. It's amazing how this one thing can really make me second guess my purchase (wondering what lies in store for me as the car ages and the miles start adding up). Ever since I was a little kid and I used to watch the farmer down the road drive his Mark V, I always wanted a Lincoln. My parents have a TC and love it and haven't had a lick of trouble with it. I really want the same from my LS.

    Thanks, Matt

Well, Steve, you've touched on an old bugaboo of mine. It's my perception that Ford seems to have a way of killing off various models through lame advertising or no promotion at all. Then, they use the "dwindling sales" routine. They did it with the Scorpio, the last-gen T-Bird and Mark VIII. Now, there's no doubt that the market for full-size coupes waned, but they had a unique product here and IMO, didn't play to it's strengths. The latest example is the FWD Cougar. This was supposed to bring a whole new generation of buyers to Mercury showrooms. IIRC, initially, sales were quite good, then trailed off. Why did this happen? Coupes are making a comeback. Witness the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Honda Accord Coupe, Toyota Solara, etc. The car was saddled with tepid peformance and notoriously bad seats; things easily remedied. Rumors abounded about a performance model that never materialized. Then after hemming and hawing for several model years instead of an SVT, they brought out the "S" model. Laughable. Too little, too late. It will die off without a whimper. Ask yourself when you last saw a TV or print ad for the Cougar. We're a long way from the Cougar Eliminator, aren't we?

How does this relate to the LS? I don't think anyone here will argue that with the exception of the luanch campaign, advertising for the LS is either non-existent or totally lame. I realize that you can't change public perception overnight, but this car has been on the market for 2½ years now and people still don't what it is. When I worked the NY auto show on behalf of LLSOC this past April, I couldn't get over how many people asked me if this was the new Continental. Maybe Lincoln should just rename it that. Sales would probably double. In an obituary of Continental in my local paper, the writer states that the Continental will be replaced by the LS--Arrgh! Of course, I absolutely love my car and Lincoln has my undying admiration and devotion for the bold step of bringing it to market. Those of us who have met the LS team know what an enthusiatic and dedicated bunch they are. We'll see what's in store at Mania III and we'll hope that the powers that be decide to step up to the plate to make the LS the household word it should be.

Have you guys that have engine stall problems in hard corners tried turning off the Advance Track?

This may be the problem. With mine off, I can slide around corners at full throttle with no hesitation.

I agree the marketing of the Lincoln LS has been dismal. Lincoln's initial marketing campaign was outstanding. Wood, Adrenaline, Leather. I can still hear the LS going through the gears.

I used to actually look forward to those commercials and even turned them up. After a couple of months of commercials, I went down and test-drove the LS. The rest was history and I do not regret my purchase.

As I recall, Lincoln received an award for that ad campaign and one has to wonder who was the Idiot that changed the marketing of the LS.

Here in LA, the only advertising I have seen is a short 15 or 20 second ad promoting 0% financing or the lease incentive. What is worse it usually is shown in conjunction with a Navigator offer.

    Scott,

You might be on to something with your suggestion as to the AdvanceTrac feature being the culprit.
I always have the feature in the default on position. Lately I have been thinking about turning it off for normal driving conditions. Sometimes it can be annoying when it takes control when pulling out aggressively into traffic, or when you hit a bump in the road. I don't think it is designed or safe for it to stall in a sharp turn however since you loose steering control. Does anyone else turn the AdvanceTrac off for every day in traffic driving?

I agree Tom but if it does not stall in the corners, that would narrow it down to a problem with the Advance Track.
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
You would have to make a very hard right turn or be on a very slippery road for Advance trac to even engage. Even then it wouldn't kill the engine - just apply the brakes on one or more wheels and if necessary cut engine torque. I don't think it's the culprit. If it's happened on manual equipped cars and we know it wasn't driver error with the clutch then that rules out the auto tranny. Sounds more like the ignition or the computer. If it was fuel then I would expect it to be hard to start afterwards.

There was a very similar problem on my 97 explorer (and many others) where the engine would die when turning left, usually as you were trying to pull out into traffic in an intersection. Never did hear if they actually diagnosed the problem or not. I got rid of the Explorer shortly thereafter.

If you are in your car and you put the key in - and the seat doesn't return... if you then push the memory button - the seats return, correct?

Okay... after your seats return... (with the key still in the ignition) press the unlock button on your key fob, if your seat stays in that exact position - then I'd say you have a problem that the dealer will probably have to fix.

If the seat goes to the wrong position - then you need to program your key fob to match the seat memory.

That's the only thing I can think of that might be user-error, besides manually changing the steering wheel or seat position before inserting the key.

No AdvanceTrak on my baby... So that can't be it unless if there is more than one reason for stalling..

I totally agree that advertising can make or break a car, but Ford is not the only guilty party.
As well as the LS, there's also a Camaro in the family fleet. The Camaro is being killed after 35 years. GM says that sales are too far down to keep the line running, even though it's a great "bang-for-the-buck" hot rod. Seen any interesting and consistent ads for the car in the last 3-4 years? Wonder why sales hit the skids??

Ok, we build a great platform but we are down on power. Fantastic handling at the time but the mags are not universally excited. The LS keeps getting compared to the smaller Bavarian. Those of us who like to row consider the LS Manual the first alternative RWD 4 door sedan you can shift besides the German brand that has had this market locked up for 15 years. LS has 50-50 balance, aluminum hood, trunk lid, front quarter panels, battery in the trunk, aluminum suspension arms, etc. Now WHO are you going to sell this to ???
Yes, many brand loyal or buyers lookin for something new, who don't necessarily know or care about these features will buy the car. I call this the normal market share. It's like as if you insert ANYTHING into the market, a car will get some sales. So besides this "normal" market, how do you market the car? Well, with this kind of standard equiptment, you would go after the younger (30-50) performance oriented buyer, right. Well, Lincoln has not pursued this market directly. Possibly, they know they don't have the goods compared to you know who. Down on power/weight ratio. Poor 0-60 (especially in the current market). Lack of availability of a limited slip differential.
Performance buyers are not entirely dumb. They read magazines. They talk to their friends.
If Lincoln wants to play this game, they can't put out the first edition and not improve. They lost the possible great first impression game and now have to really try hard. This is not a half-way game. You have to decide whether you want to have a "nice" car or go after what I consider a smaller market but filled with high price competitors as well. The LS can be the "performance/value" leader in this segment.
2003 improvements will address some of these deficiencies. But the Manual, especially, needs to go to finishing school. If the Focus can have a six-speed, why can't the LS? Or at least the overdrive 5 from the Rx-7. I don't believe Getrag has all the answers, but they did show a little initiative with the CTS overdrive fiver even though Getrag can't translate "overdrive" into German. (The CTS uses a useless .82 fifth instead
of a cruiser .71). At this point, a Tremec looks good, even though it is not "world class" (if you can call no overdrive "world class").
I would like to see the LS admired as a performance car. It will not happen overnight. Two factors are Ford's current financial challenges and the SUV boom which de-emphasizes the sedan market. But if you start something, you ought to decide where to go with it.
The Manual LS is a car still trying to find a market.
(I will wear my metallic underwear to Mania 3 to avoid an engineering colonic from the loyalist contingent and LS Public Relations monks. I will also wear my T-shirt that reads "Free the LS Engineers" since Scooter does not answer my E-mails and is no doubt locked up by the bean counters).

Maybe I drive my LS too hard but when I go around the corners, my Advance Track engages all the time. I turn it off. I have a favorite FWY onramp that I slam with the LS in a 4 wheel controlled drift at 60mph plus at the end of the apex.

I am a forty year cripple who has to get his jollies some way.:-) But then again, there is no whining coming from the co-pilot seating either.

BTW-I must be lucky because I have had no failures in my LS8 since taking delivery in September 2000.
  • leadfoot4leadfoot4 Member Posts: 593
I also say amen, but would like to add one thought. Since you (Lincoln) decided to make the plunge, be serious about it. Or, should I say, stay serious. In all honesty, if there was still an Impala SS, I probably would have bought one of them in 2000. But, since GM killed that car, the LS got me to switch to a Ford product rather that something else (foreign).
The Jaguar camp is stepping up to address the "shortcomings" of their edition of the platform, so way can't the solution be a "shared expense" between the two marques??
IMHO, the RWD platform WILL make a resurgence, and the LS certainly is at the forefront of the domestic offerings. It doesn't need an overhaul, just some upgrades. FoMoCo, are you listening??

Received quotes to Lease an LS Sport with All-Season Package, 3 year, 15,000 miles per. All local dealers started at $535-$550 a month. I am know down to 2 dealers at $515-519 and one dealer at $509. How low can they go!!
  • tuckmantuckman Member Posts: 22
To follow up a previous post, the money foctor for leases in Colorado is not the interest equivalent of 1.75 to 2.75 percent.

They are NOT playing with the residual, just giving the money away cheap.

mweinstein2-Is that for a V8 Sport? Any additional options?

Tuckman- I assume you meant IS the equivalent of 1.75-2.75%? That's a really good deal. A co-worker of mine was just quoted an equivalent of 6.75% on a Dodge Caravan.

A thought --doesn't the LS have a feature that in an emergency the fuel is cut off? Could a "misread" of this function have any relationship to the stall phenomenon? ALSO, concerning the LS image and market, I would imagine that there are quite a few guys like me: late 50's, baby-boomers, now own other cars (Boxster, Ferrari 308), but remember with fondness and nostalgia the glory days of American Muscle: front-engined V8, rear drive, fast 0-60 sexy cars that got your insides to tingle. When I was younger I owned a '55 Chevy V8 and then a '62 Pontiac Grand Prix with "tri-power" carbs. Guys like me, when we were younger, KNEW that the Answer To Life was Fast Cars and Fast Women -- now that we are a little older, we'll just make it Fast Cars. That's what got me to the LS -- there are others, Lincoln

"DEARBORN, Mich., Jan 17 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. on Thursday reported a net loss of $5.07 billion for the fourth quarter of 2001, as it braced for a restructuring that will includes tens of thousands of job cuts and shutting down at least five North American plants in a bid to return to profitability.

It closed the books on a horrific year for the world's No. 2 automaker, which posted its first full-year loss since 1992 due to problems including the Firestone tire crisis, quality control, costly recalls and a heated incentives war amid the U.S. economic slowdown."

Hard to see where the capital will come from to re-invigorate the LS in view of the above. Not to beat a dead horse but Lincoln Advertising and Marketing really dropped the ball on what should have been a spectacular LS story. "Just build it and they will come" does not work in this competitive marketplace and the old line sales mentality in Dearborn still doesn't get it.

I suspect that bringing this message to the Lincoln folks at MANIA 3 will be preaching to the converted. The good old boy senior management in Detroit is hunkering down to protect their retirement plans and buy out clauses. This lends itself to the more basic bottom line expense cuts we are seeing. Improving the revenve line requires a grasp for the market that is apparently not there. What a shame.

AdvanceTrac is supposed to cut power, but not kill the engine completely, so if that's causing the stall, something is wrong with the system. I never drive with it turned off, take a hard RH corner quite fast every morning and have never experienced the stalling problem.

Chuck, like you, I thought of the fuel shutoff. It has a reset switch on the driver's side kick panel, IIRC, so I believe it's not supposed to work partially, or intermittently. Not to say it couldn't be defective.

What's really odd: I've been a regular here for about 15 months, around LLSOC since almost the beginning, and don't ever recall this problem until just recently. Should we be comparing model year and build dates here to see if we can narrow things down a bit? We can bring this issue up with Lincoln next month at LS Mania 3; the more data we can provide them, the better.

I found this this afternoon and got a kick out of it. If you're a registered user of Owners Connection and go to Lincoln, check out their latest links. Go to the life style tab, and then on to the Gearing Up article. Does anyone sound familiar?

Anyway, I hope this board does not become a quote, residual, or a factor board. I hate to say this and garner the wrath of the people who lease, but by definition, isn't a lease just revolving credit? I can see the sense if the entire payment where deductible for a business, but don't factors favor an owner for deducting vehicle expenses for business uses anyway? I guess I tend to factor ownership in too much, not user-ship.

It's possible that the mass air flow sensor wires have picked up a thin film of dirt. This may be causing the engine to run ever so slightly richer or leaner. This can cause the engine to stall out on turns. Only reason I'm saying that is when I was playing around with the mass air flow sensor with the recalibrator, if the adjustment was even slightly off from factory parameters, the engine would die.

You can check for this by observing the next time it dies. If the rpms drop suddenly from 1,000 to 600 then slowly dies, this may be a possibility.

Mine is a 2002 V8 Sport and I never experienced this problem with my 2000 V8 Sport. I think there were two other 2002 V8 Sports, and only one 2000 V8 Sport involved. The 2000 was Airwolf's and since he ran over a black cat, Broke a friends mirror in his trunk and lives on top of an ancient Indian cemetery, I don't think we should include him.

The AdvanceTrac always seems to kick in when I try and have a little fun. A push on the button and no problem laying a patch of rubber off the light. I think I'm going to start having some fun and, unless the weather warrants other wise, shut it off.

Mine's an '01 V8 Sport w/AdvanceTrac, built in early August 2000. My stall was after a fairly rapid trip up a right-hand exit ramp (shallow slope, shallow turn), then quickly across three lanes to the right, then a fairly quick stop. I wasn't turning right at the moment of the stall; I was headed straight in the right-hand lane of the frontage road. No ABS activation, no AdvanceTrac light. (I've only turned AdvanceTrac off a couple of times to make sure the switch works; I always leave it on.)

Mine's only died that one time, and has never shown any inclination to do it again. What Brian described, though, does sound vaguely familiar. IIRC, it seemed like the revs dropped and just kept dropping until the engine quit.

I think Scott's right about the fuel cutoff. If it activates (designed to do so after a significant impact/accident), I think it has to be manually turned back on. The car won't run at all until the cutoff is reset.

Mine's a V8 sport built 10/99. Mine only stalled once, about 18 months ago as I was going uphill slowly (25 mph or so) and slowed to a stop at a stop sign. Just as I came to a stop the engine died. Restarted with no problem. Hasn't reoccurred since. And I don't have AdvanceTrac.

I seem to remember my V6, non-sport, 5/00 build LS stalling once as I came off the freeway. I was on the freeway doing about 80 for about 15 miles. I exited and stopped at the light at the bottom (no turns). The engine (RPM's as LS1bmw0 described) started faultering then the car stalled. It was about a year ago, I guess, and hasn't happened since.

You can get a FREE copy of "ZoneAlarm" at:

    http://www.zonealarm.com

This is a FREE personal firewall program which allows you to turn off/block those annoying and pesky ads & pop-ups. You also get protection from those little programs some web sites install on your computer (unknown to you), for the purpose of collecting your personal information and sending it to the offending web site (also unknown to you).

...but I hope you folks realize that if you are seeing "pop-up ads" that they are not coming from the Town Hall.

Yes, we have added a banner ad at the top, and some links and ads on the left sidebar. But NO pop-ups have been added or are planned.

I do hope you good folks can understand why we had to do this. The reality is that the Town Hall has done nothing but lose money for Edmunds.com ever since its inception.

This is a wonderful place, and the Edmunds.com folks have always realized that, so they have been subsidizing it. But you know, there always comes a time when the piper has to be paid.

And for the Town Hall, that time is now.

The very nice thing about letting the advertising pay the way is that you, our community, gets to continue to enjoy our Town Hall for free.

This is JMHO, but it seems to me looking at a banner ad and some sidebar ads is a very small price to pay for what we all receive here.

Just my thoughts. I don't mean to distract from the discussion here, though.

One other problem with the pop-up stoppers is that LLSOC uses pop-up screens to go from one area to another and you won't get them if you turn those programs on. I tried Pop-Up Stopper and it works really good but I couldn't get around LLSOC.

Auto Barn http://www.autobarn.net/proair12vcor.html has a cordless/rechargeable 12V air compressor that looks pretty cool. It’s the PRO AIR model, it's sale priced at $44.95. If you want something cheaper the best price for a Yorkcraft™ 12V Mini Air Compressor is at Lots For Less http://www.lotsforless.com/mtmac.htm priced at $29.00. The Yorkcraft is going for more then double that at some other sites.

for different folks. I was anit-lease until four years ago when I took a job which required extensive travel(got home from a week in Cairo,Egypt last night and leave again for 3 weeks in Salt Lake for the Olympics in February). I frequently leave my wife and 2 young children at home alone, so by keeping her and the kids in a new luxury car with an excellent warranty and roadside service, I have nothing to worry about when I travel. Flat tire, dead battery, no problem. I want my wife and children in a new car every 3 years that is under a great warranty, so leasing a new luxury car is THE answer for MY family situation. Besides, since I am A-plan qualified, I have a V-8 powered luxury sedan for what most people pay for a Taurus. Problem is, the wife is GMS qualified, and saw a new CTS......I know, say it isn't so....

For those of you who are a little computer savy, the pop up ads are occuring because programs like New.net, SaveNow and Comet Cursor have probably gottem themselves installed on your computer. It's easy to do - at some point you've probably been promted to install one of these programs.

Go to your Ad/Remove programs (Control Panel), look for any of these. If you see them, remove them. There are more, but these seem to be the most popular. I had all 3 installed on my computer (my fault, it's easy to do), and after removing them, I rarely get a pop-up ad.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
In addition to koury's helpful thoughts, it is possible you have been to website that uses popups prior to coming here - in some cases, the popups will "follow" you around and sometimes can even show you advertising related to the content of the site you moved on to.

IOW, some of them can figure out you are now on a car site and show you related ads - which makes you think that they are originating here, when they are not.

I know this can happen from visiting ezboard because it has happened to me. I've heard of this happening from other sites as well.

I am left with no choice but to blow away the message board and start from scratch. I do have the messages saved and I will attempt to put them back. They will not have the original author showing and they will probably be one long post for each topic and I can't promise that all of them will be restored.

I wanted to put the new board on at the same time that we went to the new site but I can't wait. So the board will be down for today.

Working on my mobile video project in the LS. For my purposes, I need to have my audio and video signals amplified. (Signal Coming from my DVD player. Using Y-RCA connectors to split the video signal to two monitors and splitting the audio out signal to one FM modulator and two a split headphone jack is reducing both audio and video signals.) A installer on the net stated that his shop has used a Radioshack 4-way device that is a video/audio amplifier all in one. (Has RCA inputs for audio/video source, and 4 outputs for each for output). He stated that although this device (which Ive seen on the shelf) is designed for home use, his shop has "easily modified it" and routinely uses it for automotive use. THe specs on the transformer for this device lists input at 110volts, and output of the transformer at 9 volts. Any ideas on how his shop uses this? I assume that simply cutting the plug off and wiring it directly to the 12 volts of the car will simply blow the device, sooner or later. Correct? Any ideas on what to use to step down the input from 12 volts to 9?

    Thanks..

Seriously, The stalling was legitimate. It started reving funny and then it died. It was after a right hand turn here in the BIG D... I cranked it and it would not start. Cranked it again and came right on... No fuel Cutoff Switch involved he unless its an automatic switch.

Does this sound like a Question for MANIA III or what?
