I am trying to get the money factor and will post it later.

No, the 2.5 is a smaller bore. However many of us enterprising Contour owners are mating the SVT heads to the 3.0L block. The block has the same dimensions, but a smaller bore. Both the 2.5L and 3.0L Duratecs share the same crankshaft.
Interestingly the 3L LS block is considered by some.
As to the older of the two, the 2.5L was released in North America in late 1994 with the 1995 Contours, I don't think you could yet get th 3.0L Duratec in the Taurus until the 1996 model year.
So I could say you have a tarted up Contour engine in those V6 Lincoln LS thingys. Not that that's so bad 8^)

I have set up a topic under the LS MANIA 3 forum at www.llsoc.com. They want honest and free-flowing questions but need to be prepared ahead of time. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated to enhance this very important role of Mania 3.
We need to have them turned in no later than Friday, January 25, 2002, so they have adequate time to prepare.
Thanks,
Brian

Looks like there will be a 3 hour roundtable so should we categorize and provide printouts of questions to be asked. Also what should the format be to ensure we optimize the time available?
Regards,
Airwolf
I can always categorize the questions once we get them. Everyone will get a copy of the questions. I'll have to meet with Jonathan to figure out the format once we get the questions collected.
Keep it comin' Lincoln, I'm Lovin it!
On a more positive note, I closed a big escrow today and I ordered a $175.00 Bell Helmet (white in XXLarge because of my fat head) and gave Torrey my Visa card for a 2002 Air Box. Nothing like spending over $300 for LS "accessories". Let's see.. the Borla, the K&N, this new stuff...
I'm sure that at least tires are next. If the wife unit doesn't notice, I may get those AVS Sports with the awesome tread pattern but after Mania 3. Oh, I'm making the Doubletree reservations pronto and a check to Brian asap. I smell those cones...
badazzls6,
I had an exhaust leak on my 2000 V8 and it only made noise when it was cold, once it warmed up it disappeared. It sounds like you may have a feul issue to me.
Tom
LS owners may benefit from the knowledge base
gathered at MANIA 3.
Sorry I'll miss what promises to be a super event.

I agree with lolaj42, it's amazing Lincoln is still so interested in owner feedback and treats us the way they do. And they keep incrementally improving the car, largely in areas we all complained about. And my LS has been very reliable. The list of things that have gone bad and needed repair are mostly small problems, and are not that many, most could wait until a regular service to get them addressed. They are:
1) Right after delivery, the hydraulic pump for the engine cooling fan went out, repaired correctly the first time.
2) Had one headlight fog up after a year, replaced, no more problems.
3) Ball joint recall (in spec)
4) Transmission reflash (although my tranny was without symptoms, the reflash tightened it up more)
5) Radio controls on steering wheel stopped working. Went through the usual replace steering wheel switch, then replace radio, same as everyone else (they won't believe it's the radio until they replace the switch). Done about 8 months ago, still works perfectly.
Not much for a 6/2000 build car in what was really it's first production year (sort of). Everything except the cooling fan pump didn't require a special trip to the dealer, just waited until oil change time. BTW, the service dept at my dealer seems to be quite competent. They even have a system where you give them your e-mail, and they will e-mail you when your car is done as well as call, and I always get either an LS or a Grand Marquis (de Sade ) as a loaner. Plus the dealer has gourmet coffees and really great pastries in the customer lounge in the mornings. I still get calls periodically from my salesman asking if everything is still OK (I know, it's good sales technique to get repeat business, but it's nice he's asking, he's managed to get an answer for me on several accessories and got right back to me). So my dealer experience and car are completely satisfactory. I know there are some lemons in any grove, but mine has been one of the more trouble-free cars I've owned. The worst was a VW GTI, that car drove me nuts with service and build problems.

"When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car..."
-Pull the key, leave the car w/out locking doors and when you reinsert the key - the seats/wheel SHOULD be exactly where you left them.
-Pull the key, leave the car w/locking the doors and if you use the Key Fob to unlock - the seat/wheel will automatically change to the setting that is programmed to that particular keyfob which is programmed to either seat memory 1 or 2 - that you program it to match. (default is 1?)
*If you adjust the seat/wheel in any way before putting the key in the ignition - neither will move from the position they are in at that moment following the adjustment. Of course, if you hit the memory buttons and they will return to your setting.
Programming the key fob for a particular memory is in the manual and easy to do.
My problem occurred whether I used the keyfob to unlock or left it unlocked at home. I was even able to reproduce it by sitting in the car and pulling the key out and putting it back in immediately over and over. The seat would fail to return to position upon key insertion about 50% of the time. Hitting the memory button didn't fix it either (unless I hit #2 and then hit #1 again.) Either changing the original seat position bypassed the problem or maybe there was a loose wire that tightened up. But I did nothing to fix it and it went away.
As you know my LS has been in the Dealership for the past week and a half. Going on a total of 4 weeks for this issue this coming Friday.. They think they found the issue. The clunking noise is coming from the sway bar in the front. They are replacing the bar, bushings, the Links and the Clamps from what I understand..
How did they diagnose it? Took out the sway bar and drove it without it. No Noise. Now here is the clincher... They don't know why the noise is being caused. Parts are on order car should be all back together by Friday. You should see my car... Passengers Seat Out, Fenders Off, Hood Off, Shocks Removed and reinstalled, Engine Undercarriage and skirts were also taken out. Bumper taken off to from what I understand.
On Friday we will find out if changing out the parts solved the problem. Will keep you posted..

P.S. Never thought about it but regarding the Stalling mine happened on a Right hand turn. Don't know if it helps but might.
Thanks for any responses and problem solvers to my situation in advance,

Any suggestions as to what I should look at? I would like to keep the performance I enjoy on my LS but need more space. Wish it were the size of the BMW 7 series or the Continental.
It won't have anywhere near the handling of the LS, but maybe the Mercury Marauder will fill the bill. LS Mania 3 is all about the LS, of course, but I'm hoping we'll get a good look at the Marauder when we're at PAG headquarters.
BTW, there's not much size difference between the LS and the 7 series.
I'll just have to take it in and listen to what the dealer has to say. I just don't want to get a rental car because, our dealership rents out Grand Marquis and/or Town Cars and it's just not the same as my baby LS.
Thanks,
Mike
I hope I will not jinx myself but no falling windows, never a stall, no rattles, clunks or vibrations. My heated seats are still nice & toasty. This is the most trouble-free car I have ever owned. The only thing that I ever came back for (besides my free maint.) was a fogged headlight. I never have anything to write about. My lease is also up this summer and am confused about my replacement. I wish the LS were just a bit bigger. A little small for a family of four. I JUST LOVE THIS CAR AND HATE TO PART WITH IT.

I'm planning to change the transmission fluid this spring, as the LS will be two years old. Due to the fact that we have five cars in the family fleet, I try to do as much of the work myself to help keep the costs within reason.
I kept a posting of Mark's from last year that says to put 7 quarts of fluid in through the fill plug, start the car, and this will fill the torque converter. My question is, how much more fluid will be needed to finish the fill up?
In the shop manual, transmission fluid temperature, via some computer tool, is also mentioned. Would a "temperature tape" affixed to the tranny pan work sufficiently well for this job? Thanks for any info.
The bad grounds did not allow the motor sufficent voltage to complete its move with the memory.
I was told the LS (early models) had a history of bad grounds that caused a multitude of problems.
Just a note about my LS. It has been in the shop more than any other car that I have owned. Almost as much as the others combined. The only reason that I still have it is that it is really an exciting, great car to drive.
Temperature tape will work fine to measure the transmission temperature. You want it to be at 100F (37.7C) to set the level.

They are supposedly the oldest LM dealer there is. I post this in case anyone around Central Florida is looking for a good dealer. I've been very happy with them, they were easy to deal with and open to negotiation on price, low pressure, attentive, etc. I shopped two other dealers in town, and neither wanted to deal, or appeared to be as interested in customer satisfaction as Central Florida LM has. After some of the horror stories I've heard about other dealers, I really appreciate my dealer more.
I recall one poster saying the dealer ignored him because he was casually dressed and young. I'm not that young (but younger than most Lincoln owners, I'm in my early 40's <g>). When I went in I was wearing my usual clothes for working in the software lab, beat up sneakers, jeans, a polo shirt. At no time was I ignored, treated rudely, or treated as if I wasn't the right type of person to own a Lincoln. Perhaps this is due somewhat to the fact we're in Florida, everyone's casual here, the guy in cutoffs and flip flops is probably a 6 figure income type.
Just a note, hope it helps anyone looking in this area.
Unless you go way back to the Lincoln road racing days in the early 50's, Lincoln and performance have never really been synonomous. Lincoln's always been the car for the luxury minded, although the two door Marks tried, but couldn't quite change that mindset.
Mercury has a performance history, although a fairly quiet one for a number of years.
Merc made some pretty fast cars in the late 60's/early 70's (drag cars, oval racers-cars like the CJ428, Cyclone GT, Cyclone Spoiler, performance Cougars, Comet "funny cars", Dan Gurney and Cale Yarborough specials, Dyno Don Nicholson drag cars.) Even the big Merc family sedans in the early/mid 60's could be equipped with high performance, big block engines.
So, why did Ford choose to offer a sport sedan under the brand name of a luxury yacht? Did they possibly feel that the Mercury brand was going to be eliminated and didn't want the embarassment of keeping the LS and changing it's name? (The Jag S could have been the car for the pure luxury minded buyer that wanted a sport sedan.)
I would have positioned the Ford line as the cars/trucks for the working guy, or the families just starting out; the Mercury line for the performance minded and upwardly mobile professional; and the Lincoln line for the well to do, luxury car buyer.
In fact, this is pretty much the way they were lined up back in the 50's/60's.
I learned today that my business travel that would have otherwise conflicted with Mania 3 has been pushed out a week. I'm thinking I'll go, and one of my hot buttons over the past 10 months has been the lack of interest (at Lincoln) in pushing the LS as a true performance vehicle. Point being, the Lincoln "image" is in need of definition. Cadillac has somehow managed with their cars over the past ~10 years to show that they're interested in the enthusiast market. Lincoln still appears to be in limbo. Where are the TV commercials that compare the LS to the BMW, GS, Audi, or the Merc performance cars? Where are the dealers who have even a passing knowledge of any of these vehicles? With luck, we'll be told. I can hardly wait.
Those of us in the 0.003% of the Lincoln ownership who care about performance are drinking each other's bathwater on these and other forums. Dollars rule -- what sells defines the product, and the fact that the manual LS's and (perhaps) the sports packages drive the Marketing Group. We all know that the manual has been a flop in terms of sales volume. I'm not so sure about the sports package, but I think I can guess. The fact remains that the "general public" still doesn't connect "Lincoln" with "sports sedan."
The bean counters at Ford are caught between a rock and a hard place in that they'd like to market more to us, but can't figure out how to do it without alienating the base (that'd be those blue-haired Lincoln faithful).
The Datsun crowd (that'd be the G35) is a pretty impressive competitor, though if it turns out to be as much of a "boy racer" vehicle as the IS300 did -- no harm, no foul, and we'll await the next offering from companies that are courting the performance crowd.
I've been told it's impossible to serve two masters, but maybe we'll learn how or if it's done at Mania 3.
Folks, even if you aren't going to Mania 3, which if you don't you might miss out on some excitement, you should add to the list of questions on the LLSOC forum.
Lincoln wants all feedback, good and bad, so they can respond to them. Without the questions in advance, they won't know what we want to know.
And the performance image, or lack thereof, has always been one of our hot buttons. Bring it up please!
Thanks,
Brian
ls1bmw0: The advertising started with the redo of Edmund's web pages a day or two ago. Also, isn't there more advertising along the side too? Annoying, isn't it?
Who is running the show?
Will Bill cut their legs out?
How does Jerry McGuire fit with the NEW plans.
The vision, identifiable look, the IMAGE etc...
It took someone with true insight and determination to come up with the Jag S-Type R
which will be in your local showrooms late Spring.
Does Lincoln always have to play a DISTANT second fiddle to Jaguar?
For the LS to succeed it needs to morph itself a bit. A 2 door coupe and convertible, a station wagon....yes I said it. And an SVT enhanced version etc.
But as some have said on theis board. Is the LS a one year wonder? The ONLY way the car will start to be better in the residual/resale department is if it becomes rock solid in features and QUALITY.
It has to be BETTER than the the BMW,MB,Lexus, and Infinity to EVEN be considered as a purchase option. And at that the rep does NOT happen overnight and Ford would have to commit for the long haul.
Some folks I work with went to the LA Auto Show.
They made a point of NOT going to ANY American manufacturers display areas!....Sad.
To compete you just have to be all-around better!
Lets hope for the best.
It is OK to fail trying.
But failing to try is unacceptable.
Funkcity...........Out
**Brian, I will also post this on the LLSOC board
If it's a choice between the new ads or not having the Edmunds forums, then I can certainly live with the ads. As long as they don't start doing pop-ups, it's OK by me, given the alternative. TANSTAAFL.

I'm not an engineer -- but it sure smells of MAS/engine/transmission/computer. That narrows it down. Will ask the service manager at Witt Lincoln in Escondido when I bring it in for the 5000 service.
P.S. The car has been GREAT. My last one was a MB E320 and I don't miss it at all.
Chuck
Those? Blew right by 'em.
(Though ads for aftermarket goodies would be better than Lexus ads...)
Seriously, "Norton Internet Security", or a slew of similar personal firewall programs, (some even free), have an option which allows you to block Ads and Pop-ups while surfing the net.
I meant Jerry McGovern...
Oh well
1) The clutch pack for F1 cars. ~9" in diameter, ~3" thick, weighs 30 oz & has 440 #-ft of torque capacity.
2) ZF 6-speed auto transmission for BMW 7-series and, I think, Jag S-type. All clutches, no bands. Said to shift so smoothly that tach has to be watched to know when shift occurs.
