Glad to hear you're enjoying your new baby. The black bra will look hot with your color paint!
Don't loose that color coordinated cell phone of yours, I can tell you that my Nokia has the faux wood looking faceplate, and it's an identical match to the wood-trim package I installed in my car..blends in perfectly!
I've had my M for 10 months now, do 60/40 driving, moderate foot, and I've been sitting at 21.0 mpg for months now.
Sorry about that. Hard for me to contain the excitement but Bluebird arrived last weekend (3 weeks from time of order) and I haven't quite been the same since. What a great ride! Maybe I coulds waited and gotten a higher hp. unit for '02 but have absolutely no complaints as this car, while young, while being babied a bit during breakin, shows way more power by a LONG shot than anything I've had before. Just wanted to let y'all know how things were going and will keep everyone posted on "our" progress.
Bye the bye, how long did you all run break-in on your cars? 300 miles, 1000, what? Also, is there a minimum time that DC wants break-in oil left in the engine?
I left my "break in oil" in for 3k and change it every 3k miles. It was hard to keep speeds down, but I did wait about 500 miles before putting my foot into it.
sdmike- I can't seem to find the 300M jacket on ebay. That might have been cool! Did you but it?!?!
catguy - Pics man, give us pics! I'm not the right person to ask about break in. I hate to admit it, but I had the poor car red lined at about 100 miles. I've been taking it very easy since then. I plan to dump the oil out at 1000 miles and put synthetic in it.
ALL - One of my co-workers told me that last night Speed Vision (apparently a cable channel) had an entire show on the history of the 300. She said they also showed the 2002. If you get this channel you might want to check your TV Guide.
Dustin, The link and photos on your post looks like the photo of the " 300 Special " Concept car (December 2000; Concept Vehicles Calendar). Although the calendar details no info. This years Concept Cars calendar January shows a photo of the 300 Hemi C Convertible.
Manufactures recommend that you "condition" you engine for the first 500 miles by not maintaining a constant speed (i.e. set out on a trip w/ the cruise set for 6 hrs) for a long period of time.
By varying your driving speeds this allows the rings to seat properly. If you want to go 90 m.p.h go for it just drop back to 80 or up to 100 after a couple minutes. :-)
is break in oil any different from regular oil--i had mine changed for free by dealer when I bought it with 60 miles on it because it sat on the lot for 5 months before I bought it--I now have 16k on the car with no engine problems
Has anybody read the www.allpar.com/reviews/300m.html review?
I just can't agree with it. I have a 01' with PHP. 1) Interior is not quiet at all, it is not any better than a camry. Road noise is quiet high. 2) The transmission is not responsive at all, my 00' Nissan Quest response much better. I hope my M is not a downtuned one. I would like to hear more comments. Any way, I love the M, I believe AllPar boasts for Chrysler. Vow Monterey Rendezvous! I can't wait, I live in San Jose, see ya!
There's good reason for that. The special IS the '02 model! Everything that I have ever heard about the "special" indicated that it would be the '02 model. I think they finally announced that sometime last fall. We just didn't know if it would be the same thing, or a more tame beast. Sounds like the special will keep it's exact features as the '02 model! Makes me wish I had another 30 grand in the bank. I'll patiently wait for the N I guess!
Sounds right on the money to me. They did a fine job describing a exceptional car. The article was less enthusiastic about the M than a lot of others I have read.
Yes, I caught that last night. It's on the Speedvision channel "American Muscle Car" segment. It airs again this Sunday morning at 9:00am EST, 6:00am PST. It traces the 300 lineage right up through the current 300M and the Hemi C. Shows about 15 seconds of the Hemi C cruising under power. I WANT ONE!
One of the "interviewees" is Don Warnaar, a new member of the Chrysler 300M Enthusiasts Club. Don is also involved in the Chrysler 300 Club International. He owns both a vintage "letter series" 300 and a 300M. Talk about loving your Mopars!!
Set your VCRs for Sunday at 9:00 am EST. This is a great video for 300M owners. You can check out the whole Speedvision program lineup at http://www.speedvision.com.

looks like this is going to make it for 2002, and with the ZF 5 speed auto tranny. i would think we would need more than 30k to drive off in one, considering most of us are upside down in our 99 and 00's. thank all the incentives for that. probably looking at 38k msrp, just a guess. maybe Otto can fill us in.
Got the M back tonight and all is well. The install went well, the ride is not much different and I think over time the springs will settle some more so the stance will be lower. If the ride stays this way, I may end up with 20's afterall. I have a 20" KMC Tramp coming to America's tire for a test fit next Saturday so we'll see.
pics we like pics the more pics the better, if you don't mind tell us how much the install cost. i love my 16" chrome minivan wheels but the gap between the tire and the fender is too big. i want it low if it doesn't jar the car alot over bumps, are you the first to use the H&R springs???
I read the Allpar article for the 2001 model and one statement really jumped out at me. They said, "Transmission flare has disappeared, eliminating a problem noted by Motor Trend as well as by us; indeed, the transmission seemed much smoother as a whole. (Part of this may have been due to the use of a new fluid, Type 9096). We suspect there were other changes, but those were the ones we noticed." Can someone explain "transmission flare"? Otto? Can I use this type fluid in my 99? Maybe it'd help help my tranny quirkiness (flare?).
OK, I have just got to have one of those 2002 M's or a 300N. If I give up eating breakfast out, I can save $6 dollars a day...hmmm, that won't quite be enough. All right, got to get the SO into a new MV and get her used to a new ride. She has a history of driving cars 7 or 8 years and currently has a '93 Grand Voyager. The old thing won't die, except for the transmission every two years. 120k miles and counting. Cars are not part of her personal value system. At least I have a very nice looking, luxurious ride while I am scheming. (2k bright silver, hole, big sound, PHG)
On the Speedvision show did they actually show the 2002 300M? Was it the "concept" special that we've already seen with very ugly wheels or what? With all the people talking about the 02's lately, wonder when they'll come out. I think the two things that should be changed but probably will stay the same are the road noise (come on, three years and they still can figure out how to make this car at least a little quieter) and the crappy transmission (the current one shifts funny, saps whatever power there is from the engine, and is prone to problems). Solution? Add new, better insulation in the handsome body shell and put in that new 5-speed ZF transmission (I really don't see why they don't do this, whats a couple hundred dollars per car gonna hurt). Anyway, I'm always checking the spy photos and looking for 300N test mules but I think that it still is to early.
I thought I should share something with this board. While I am always on here talking about my M, it is actually my wife's car. She's always complaining about something with it and I find my own issues when I drive it. I'm just always the one who surfs the web and comes here for advice/complaints. I myself drive old cars (each time I get a new one, it usually is 10 years older than the last). I used to have a 1970 Dodge Coronet that was 77' Corvette yellow with a white stripe on the rear. At the same time, I had a 1979 GMC van that I still drive. Before moving to Delaware, I sold the Coronet (sometimes I really regret it, that car was so fun, looked cool, and I always took it to shows. Last July, I bought a two-tone blue Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu in Jersey. It's a daily driver but still needs a little work and should be painted soon. I don't bother with any of the new cars myself.
As for the 300M, it still is as wacky as ever. Some days it rattles or vibrates (not much but noticable) and other days it's tight, solid, and drives nice. We just can't figure it out. Both my wife and I notice the slipping transmission but this might be considered normal according to Chrysler. But hey, at least M owners (or any Chrysler for that matter) haven't been told to park their cars which will then be towed to the dealer because of a front suspension that breaks (the new 2002 GM SUV's). Our car's suspensions just vibrate or pull (could be bad tires too).
It rained a little bit here in South Florida last night. I was coming home after the rain, the road was slightly wet. Took an off ramp that curves left, up and above the highway. Yellow speed limit sign says 30mph. My 300M normally has no problem doing 60 on that curve when it is dry. So I went around at 50mp this time, because it was a bit wet. Halfway into the curve, the M started to do a four-wheel slide. I thought no problem, I do four-wheel slides for fun all the time, on the dry pavement. Besides, it is late, there is no one else on the road, and the ramp widens from one to three lanes.
This time however one of the wheels must have hit a dry patch. It least it felt like that. The nose lurched left and the rear started coming out, I think I got up to 45 degrees before the car recovered (with my help), only to start spinning in the opposite direction, again up to 45 degrees the other way, I straightened it out, and it started spinning left. I had a total of 6 violent fishtails like this before it calmed down.
Sometime in the next week or two, the name of this discussion will be changed dropping the "XX" designation.
Now that we have moved to our new platform, we no longer have a requirement to stop and restart discussions after a certain number of posts have occurred. Therefore, this discussion can be regarded as the permanent home for 300M conversation. The "part number" designations on all of our discussions will probably eventually confuse new members, so we will be gradually dropping them from the titles.
We'll also be altering original discussions in the Archives to differentiate between the first and the current.
I just wanted to give you a heads up - and by the way, if you are subscribed to this discussion, a name change will not affect your subscription.

cleaning! heck no! this weather is too volatile for me to try and temp to clean her ... my blood pressure is high enough without having to be stressed out during this rainy season, one day it's predicting nice and BOOM it rains!
got a new windshield today. yeah, you all read right. a NEW windshield. some rock decided to hit the shield and made a small crack. coudln't stand it and called immediately and had the appt set up for installation at home. the guy came, popped the old one off, and wouldn't you know it, the factory shield had a small leak in the corner seeping into the body! what the heck!!! so much for depending on machines to do what human's can be best!
now that the guy is gone, the windshield is the cleanest i've seen it since the day i BOUGHT the car! no streak, road, wax marks on it!!!! i am not leaving my home this weekend.. wanna at least enjoy the only part of thecar that is CLEAN. LOL.
The noise on the 00's and 01's are a lot less then the 99's. In other words the newer ones are about 10dbs quieter then the 99's over the same streach of road. (at least according to my sound meter).
I taped the show the other day, really like the part at the end, when he talked about racing the new M against the older letter 300's. Can't wait to put a 350hp N against the old 350hp letter 300M's.
Where did you read about the new 5sp ZF transmission going into the 2002 special? The only thing I have read pertaining to the transmission is that they are going to add a larger cooler to it. May still trade in my 99 for one though. The cam and throttle body can't hurt. Hearing news about a 300hp TL comming out in 03, so Chrysler better hurry up with the 350Hp N 300.
Glad your alright. I drive just like that when it's dry, howerver, in the rain down here, I'm old fart Too many other driveres who can't drive to watch out for. ALso noticed the on/off ramp, & thier curves are always a bit tricky in the rain due to way they drain the water.
Ok, I dove in! I got a Viper 550ES alarm with remote start. I must say, the installer was very good. Let me see the install, as well as explained every step. This system on the 300M, does not defeat the factory system. I can use the factory remotes, & features, or the viper remotes. The viper turns on the factory system. Now it did require a key to be in the car. However, It is enclosed in a black case, that is so well hidden in the dash, no one but the installer can find it. It works like this….That black box that holds the key, only sends a single to the alarm brain when the remote start is triggered on the viper remote. It’s bypassed AT ALL OTHER TIMES.(ie-the factory system is active) Even is someone breaks into the car & tries to start it, it will not start, due to this fact. They still need the key. The install is very clean, & you cannot tell a difference. So far no electrical problems, or any problems with it. Cost was $334.
Wow!! Had a great day. Just purchased a 01M loaded to the gills (No PHG, want to live to enjoy the M) in champagne toast with sandstone squating area. Spent this past week reading all your folks posts from the beginning (about 5 hours worth) and taking in all the great info you provided. Can't thank all of you enough. Will be picking it up Thursday and my wife and I will probably go through the M brochure till it's in tatters. Thought I was going to have a nightmare trying to get the price I wanted but I think after the Sales Mgr. saw me walking in the lot prior to opening crunching numbers in a calculator and papers flying , it all went great. I went in there with a total 5% profit for him over invoice after rebate deduction and deducting his holdback. His first offer was 1k higher than I was looking for and I told him so. He asked what my price was and I told him. He dropped another 700 and we agreed to $29,112 with prep included. No other charges, no mentioning of financing other than when I asked DC's rate. I told him up front I'm paying cash. No haggling over extended warranties etc. Just a done deal. Can't wait till Thursday. A little sad though... have to sell my 91 LSC (only 53k on the clock). It's been great but now with a 2 year old and another kid on the way, 2 carseats in a 2 door just don't work. So glad to have found you guys/gals and this great list. Will keep you posted. Thanks again for all your help. Have to look into Zaino now.
Many of us in the group use photopoint to share our photos on the web. I got an email from them today that said the service would no longer be free as of mid-May. That bites.
Hopefully the 300mclub web site can supplement this service, or someone can recommend another free site to use.
Congratulations! I know you will love the M as much as we do. You need to zip on over to www.300mclub.org and join the Chrysler 300M Enthusiasts Club! We have a $10 charter member special that lasts through the 15th of April. Our club membership is growing, and we have great plans for the future!!
Yahoo does offer a place to upload images and when you sign up you get yet another email account.
I will post some pics of the after install, soon. Mom is in the hospital so I have been spending a great deal of time there.
The ride is not harsh, its tighter with less float over bumps and humps. My M is sans the PHG, which I really should have opted for in hindsight.....Cost for the install was $275.
I don't think I am the first to use the H&R springs, one of the other folks on here has them too.
Now I have to decide on "how much" I want to do to the current M, since I will want (read need) a "Hemi C" or 300N whatever its going to be called.
Congrats! Give us the low down on everything you got in your M for that 29,000. We have found that sharing experiences like this help the people who are buying and want to know how others are doing. The information posted in here was invaluable to me in getting the best deal on my Inferno Red 01. Make sure to post pictures ASAP. Oh..you can find Zaino at www.zainobros.com. They don't take credit cards, but you CAN call them to see if there is a distributor in your area. Otherwise they have a convenient form on the web.
ruski - Whoa! Glad you're ok. It rained here in SoCal today and I had a hard time spinning the tires a little for fun...until I took the traction control off.
My 2 month old M has PHG and I have been noticing allot of "Road steer" recently, where the rutting of a road from wear to it can cause the steering wheel to pull to the outer edges of the ruts, or in most cases out of the lane your in.
I hadn't noticed this to much until I had been driving in the downton Chicago area more recently where some streets can be very rutted. At one point I thought she was going to jump the curb. Even while slowly going over bumps they tend to jostle the steering wheel more then usual. The last symptom is, When I let go of the wheel after a turn to let it return straight, it seems sluggish to get back and I end up having to bring it back by hand.
I had a mechaninc friend take it for a drive and he suggested it could be the rack&pinion
I know there is a TSB on clunking or loose steering, could this be it. Does it reference the Rack&Pinion being faulty in the TSB? Or has anybody experience rack&pinion problems?
I knew the steering was stiffer on the PHG when I bought it, but I didn't notice all this pulling around to be so aggresive. I drove a non-phg recently and noticed the smoother ride, but the steering responded ten times better. No road steer, pulling or wheel jostling. I would expect the PHG to be smoother then a standard, not the other way around.
I am going to have it in the dealer soon for the weather stripping replacement. (Stripping was shrunk at 800 miles) and I want to have some good ammo to feed the "soon to be rated my me*" dealer about this steering problem. Please respond..
Luckily I have at least 3 other options of Chrysler 5*'s around me so I'll soon be grading them.
I was the other one with the H&R Springs... I did have a vibration during hard accelerations, but I just had the tires rotated and it disappeared I have some pics of my dirty New England M with them on at:
Ruski, just back on 300m after nearly a year. Is fastdriver still around. can email me at larry@larryrivers.com Still driving the 300m and its been great, just had windshield wipers start to stick, thats been the only problem...love the car. bushpilot
Does anyone know of an effective method for removing door dings that is not too expensive? It seems SUV drivers love to put dings in my 300M. It really ticks me off!
For the 29k price tag, our 01M options included: 17" chrome wheels Luxury Package Power moonroof Side Airbags Smokers Group 360 watt Infinity with 11 speakers Any and all fees, charges etc.... MSRP with destination was $33,395.00 NYS tax is a killer at 8.25%
I think we lucked out by talking to the Mgr. (owner also) and not some commission/bonus hungry salesperson. This guy had 28 M's on the lot and had more on the way. I think that some of the cars were past the three month holdback (3% off msrp) time and they were starting to or costing the dealership money. Anyway, we're real excited about the deal and can't wait til Thursday. And the topper is my insurance (Allstate) for the M is only $1,388.00 a year with $300,000 liability, collision, comprehensive and glass. I do get a good price because it's categorized as a "pleasure vehicle" (under 6,000 miles per) and spotless record. Boy, did they categorize that right. We plan on getting a lot of pleasure from the M.
Will post pictures shortly after I pick it up Thursday.
Welcome, Joe, and enjoy! Sounds like a great ride at a good price. Check out woostrim.com for a great wood dash kit to compliment the Luxury Group trim.
Well, I just order a "molded" dash kit. (Thanks for the link rogor) It replaces all the existing wood trim and adds a molded pieces for around the "clock pod", radio/HVAC controls, and shifter. I liked the molded kit because there are no sharp edges on it and it offered a piece that covered the entire vent/clock area. It comes in "English burl" (kind of knotty looking, and "rosewood". I opted for the burl as my wife's Grand Cherokee has this from the factory, giving me a pretty good idea of what it will look like installed. I just hope I did the right thing. I'll post pictures as soon as I get it.
HI!!!! Welcome back! I'm STILL here! LOL... I've only been back here about a month myself. Couldn't stand all the problems with this new site early on. Things seem to be working ok now.
Well, Christine is GONE! Two months early, but I could not take the chance of her reaching 36,000 miles with NO warranty. You know all the crap I went through with those "5-STAR" dealers. She had about 35,500 miles on her when I turned her in. I bought a 2001 Acura CL- Type S. You can see some preliminary pics here-
Since those pics, I have put on two coats of Zaino. You should see that red now! Will post more pics next week if I can. Have a house full of company here from FL. I'm leaving for West Palm Beach myself this Friday. Not much time to get things done. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 70 degrees here, so maybe I can put on coat number 3 and take some pics.
Glad your 300 has no problems considering where you live. Good to see you back here. Still taking those trips with your friends? You know who I mean. ;-))
Joey - Sounds like you got a good deal..over $4,000 off MSRP. I paid about $700 more for mine in San Diego but I also got the PHG and a couple of other things. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures of ...Bluebird was it?
"My M is sans the PHG, which I really should have opted for in hindsight.",
would translate to no PHG.
I drove a PHG equiped M before I bought mine, with the H&R springs I still think the PHG is a little stiffer, probably due to the valving in the struts.

Hopefully the 300mclub web site can supplement this service, or someone can recommend another free site to use.

Now I have to decide on "how much" I want to do to the current M, since I will want (read need) a "Hemi C" or 300N whatever its going to be called.
ruski - Whoa! Glad you're ok. It rained here in SoCal today and I had a hard time spinning the tires a little for fun...until I took the traction control off.

For the 29k price tag, our 01M options included:
17" chrome wheels
Luxury Package
Power moonroof
Side Airbags
Smokers Group
360 watt Infinity with 11 speakers
Any and all fees, charges etc....
MSRP with destination was $33,395.00
NYS tax is a killer at 8.25%
I think we lucked out by talking to the Mgr. (owner also) and not some commission/bonus hungry salesperson. This guy had 28 M's on the lot and had more on the way. I think that some of the cars were past the three month holdback (3% off msrp)
time and they were starting to or costing the dealership money. Anyway, we're real excited about the deal and can't wait til Thursday.
And the topper is my insurance (Allstate) for the M is only $1,388.00 a year with $300,000 liability,
collision, comprehensive and glass. I do get a good price because it's categorized as a "pleasure vehicle" (under 6,000 miles per) and spotless record. Boy, did they categorize that right. We plan on getting a lot of pleasure from the M.
Will post pictures shortly after I pick it up Thursday.
Sounds like a great ride at a good price.
Check out woostrim.com for a great wood dash kit to compliment the Luxury Group trim.

You know who I mean. ;-))

If your ride is good, & you do not have the PHG, i'm sure the PHG ride is alot stiffer.
Sounds like you got a good deal..over $4,000 off MSRP. I paid about $700 more for mine in San Diego but I also got the PHG and a couple of other things. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures of ...Bluebird was it?
-M
would translate to no PHG.
I drove a PHG equiped M before I bought mine, with the H&R springs I still think the PHG is a little stiffer, probably due to the valving in the struts.
