I love your spirit and I, for one, am happy to see your posts even if you are a former disgruntled 300M owner! For all your horrible experience with Christine, as you put it, "the car still turns my head!" The difference now is Christine isn't around to turn your stomach as well...LOL!

Tried the Zaino first on the Miata.
Seems that when applying the Z1/Z2 for the first time it takes forever (over 2 hours) to dry. Subsequent Z2 coats dry quickly. Normal?

For those with side impact air bags, any seat covers you would recommend? The brand I used on the Durango, I was told that there were insufficient "M"s made to warrant them producing such a model. Sheesh, I called DC and found out the 53,000 M were made in 2000. Any pointers?

Second question. I note that the mpg rated for the M is between 22-27. I know this is very subjective (how you drive, where, climate etc...). It's my wife's car and she drives very conservatively - doesn't use the auto-stick (reserved for me on weekends 8-) ) yet she hardly gets over 15 miles per gallon. We're taken "M" in tomorrow for a check-up since even DC said that it's unusually low. My thoughts are perhaps a miscalibrated computer (no I haven't done the manual calculation). But have any of you experienced such poor mileage? Thanx for your thoughts,

I had the same experience with my first Zaino application. It took forever to dry, even in the warm california sun. I just did another layer of Z-5 and it dried in about 15 minutes.

sibe - I get pathetic gas mileage as well. My dual exhaust increased me from about 16 to 18mph, but that's still a far cry from the 25's that I see here. Most of my driving is highway too. Let me know what you find out.

I have two of my own. The other day I was coming home and started to slow down because there were two kids playing with a ball on the right when two kids came running out from behind a car on the left. At that point I was going really slow and stopped about 30 feet away but all I can think about is if I had been going 15 or even 10 mph how close it would have been. Be carful!
  • intrepidspiritintrepidspirit Member Posts: 662
While I got 26.2 MPG on my recent trip (post # 2597), the mileage drops off dramatically with short stop and go trips. I have seen mine drop to under 15 average under these conditions. The engine works so much more efficiently @ 75 MPH and 2300 RPM's...

Also, I believe your car is still very new -- my wife was getting only 15-16 MPG on her freeway drive to work when it had less than 500 miles on it. Now that it has 750 miles, she is getting 20-21 on the same trip. I expect she will get 24-25 when the car has 2-3000 miles on it....that's what she gets when she uses my M (6500 miles).

I think I was MORE disgruntled with the "5-STAR" dealers/factory reps then the car itself. I still don't think that I should have been back to the dealer so much when the car was new, but maybe if they were TRUE "5-STAR" dealers I wouldn't have been. Yes, the 300 still turns my head to LOOK. Christine turned MY head 360 degrees at times! LOL....

    rklass-

Like any wax/polish, the weather conditions make a big difference. I never had to wait hours for Zaino to dry. I'm going outside right now while it's still fairly warm to wash my new car and put on coat number 2 of Z-5/Z-6. I already have 4 coats of Z-2/Z-6. Looking good so far.

Well, my corroded CHRYSLERs are off, and they'll replace my door (armrest) panel, weatherstripping, bulging outside driver's door trim (starting just below the lower back corner of the window, going back), and do the shoulder bolt safety recall. They didn't get the rear end to make the bad strut/bearing sound, but everything apparently looks intact back there and since it's logged into their computer, if it happens again within a reasonable time after my warrantee expires, they'll fix it then.

Hey strangers! I have been in Spain for the last seven days, and prior to that we where moving, so I have kind of been MIA for the last 2 weeks. Any way I have some great pictures of a European spec 300M but don't know where to post them since photopoint is going to a pay service. I also have pictures of the new wood dash I installed the week before last (god I have been away a while).

The European 300M I took pictures of has a 2.5 V6 w/ cloth interior, and break away mirrors. Are break away mirrors on the 2001? Also in the pictures are a european front license plate bracket w/ a cool 300M plate.

Let me know who the prefered host is now to post pictures and I will get them up.

    Thanks

they are flushing out the atf 3 they put in by accident and putting in atf 4 as required.

they are replacing ALL 4 weatherstripping around doors due to shrinkage--no argument there

reprogramming ATC climate control due to poor operation--blows ac when set at 70 and outside temp is 50

checking clicking window on drivers side

    replacing headlight welt--loose

checking for growling noise in belt area on slow acceleration from stop---2nd time --couldnt fix last time---they did try tightening belt to no avail

They gave free use of a "Cheep" --sure dont drive like the M---

let you know how I make out--i pick it up tomorrow
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
You can put them at photopoint temporarily, or you can use Yahoo (next choice, so it seems). To answer your question, the 01 has "breakaway" mirrors.
  • sibesibe Member Posts: 102
Intrepidspirit: I knew that engine break-in has a lot to do with it. And yes, my wife's car has 700 odd miles on it. But what you are suggesting is a 50% mileage increase between new and 5k miles. That's a HUGE increase. Not disputing your figures, but just very surprised by the increase in mileage due EXCLUSIVELY through engine break-in. FWIW, we do have the High Performance Package with the 17" rims and Michelin tires.

I am concerned as since up to recently we had the highest gas prices nationwide with the middle grade fuel at 2 bucks a gallon on Oahu. And since I can't do anything about the Durango's mileage, I'm praying I can do something about "M"s one. Thanx again for your feedback.

Good luck on the ATC. My 5* said my 2000 300M ATC was operating "within spec's" and wouldn't touch it. My Dodge dealer adjusted the sensor and it is better, but still doesn't always maintain the temperature. At least he tried! My wife's 2001 works fine. My 98 Intrepid worked fine. I think it may be the positioning of the sensor, which means it will probably never work right...
  • sibesibe Member Posts: 102
Yes, the 2001 come with breakaway mirrors.

My mileage on my 99 is about 18-19 combined (predominantly stop and go city driving). FWIW - they run fine on regular unleaded, so you can save a few cents per gallon.

    Pjyoung:
You're right, however I did read in the manual that if you had the HP package that you could get better oooooompf by using the midrange fuel. Thought it might also burn cleaner and keep the injectors clean.

OK. Done! Washed the car, dried it, applied Z5, then Z6, took pics, posted them to Photopoint and made a new album- all in less then 2 hours! Not bad. Take a look. Sorry for posting this here, but the Zaino drying question came up here.

You can post the pics at Yahoo photos for free or e-mail them to me and I'll put them in my Photopoint albums. I paid for a subscription the other day because I have too many photos there to move now.

With all the recent gas 300M gas mileage issues, I thought I would post the numbers we get. No matter if we are on the highway or just doing the normal daily route, our y2k M with base suspension and Goodyears gets 21.5 MPG. I check the little roof computer (a very nice feature) and it always reads the same figure within a tenth of a gallon or two. We drive normally and have never used the Autostick.

Thill381- post those pictures quick! My wife wants to see an M with cloth seats (even though it's only available for exported cars) because she doesn't like leather period. I think it's kind of nice, just a little warm in the sun and cool other times.
  • rklassrklass Member Posts: 133
Greg, you didn't say how many miles you have on your M. The EPA rating is 18 city, and 26 highway, and living in HI, I don't imagine you do much highway driving.
I have gotten as low as 18.5 MPG on mine, and "city" for me is rural driving. I have also turned in 26-28MPG on long trips.
You will see some improvement after 3-4,000 miles, bur 15 MPG may be worth a dealer check.
As for the seat covers; who are you saving that beautiful leather for? Enjoy it!

ruski, ask your dealer about vinyl repair. There are guys that go from dealer to dealer to repair vinyl rips and cracks, they do a fabulous job. They're probably brothers of the dent doctors.

intrepidspirit, the heater blend door in my M is stubborn sometimes. It will refuse to close when I have the a/c on, and refuse to open enough when I have the heat on. What temporarily cures it is to run the thermostat, the temp selector thing, all the way up and all the way down and then put it back where you want it. It will be ok then for an hour or maybe a week. You will probably want to turn the fan on its lowest setting when you do this.

    Rklass:
"M" has 700 miles + change on her. Well surprisingly we have 3 (THREE) Interstate Highways (would you believe) which are nothing more than parking lots most of the time. So yes it is stop and go a lot. I was just very surprised given that we were looking for a car that would ease us off the guzzling of the 5.9L Durango. So the 20-26 looked real good. When I got to 15.8 average (and the counter does reset after every clear), and reading the 25+mpg on the List I figured I'd call DC. They suggested I bring it in. Initially I thought it might be a badly adjusted computer (i.e. not calibrated for the 17" rims). But I guess we'll know more tomorrow (though the delaer doesn't hold out much hope). I must say I'm more concerned with surface rust developing on the inside of the trunk than the mileage....

As for "who am I saving the leather for"? 8-) Well I'm mostly concerned with UV and sun damage here in Paradise...

    fmc...
Thanks for the tip. I've played with it several times and had cold air blasting at me when I had the temperature setting up to 89! I guess I resent having to fool with it to get it to work for a while (an hour or a week). My 98 Intrepid worked perfectly and the Dodge dealer that worked on my 2000 M told me the sensor was in a different location. Apparently they corrected the problem for 2001 because my wife's 2001 M works perfectly.

Mine seems to work better since the adjustment, but I'll have to wait for the real hot weather to see if it is fixed. Since Chrysler obviously corrected the problem year to year, they may replace it if you make enough noise...

    sibe...
If your interstates aren't moving, you won't get good gas mileage. I understand that you can use regular and the only effect is 11 HP less. You may want to try that to save a few bucks...

If you've taken that off-ramp, you'll HAVE to tell us if your sunroof leaks. ;) Personally, I think *I* live in paradise (San Diego). All the amenities of Hawaii but without $10 per pound hamburger. ;)

Today I saw a sleek green car coming up behind me pretty quickly in the fast lane. When it got closer I saw it was a dark green 00 M. We gave each other a knowing wave and he went on his merry way. Any of you guys have a green 00 M and were on the I-15 near Escondido today? ;)

I have discovered a blind spot - I was turning left into a side street as some guy was crossing the side street. I only knew that he was there when I saw him scurrying away - the thick A pillar and sunset into my eyes had made him invisible.

my fuel economy - 16.2 mpg. Mixture of really bad stop and go on the outskirts of Miami, followed by a 90-100mph blast on a lonely highway.

My dealer wanted to charge me $135 for removing the lettering on both doors and for the new sets (uninstalled)! After I complained that the warranty should cover it, they dropped it. Always double-check your bill from the dealer. What do they think I am -- an insurance company!?

Reminder for you M'ers who live close to Brookline, MA. May 6th is Chrysler Dodge day at Museum of Transportation located at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline, MA. Brookline is just a few miles from downtown Boston. They usually show a collection of 40 or so cars at this lawn event. Plus they have other classic and antique cars on display in the museum building. Refreshments are served at the event. If youre within a couple hour drive , it may be worth your while to see some nice Chryslers of yesteryear---hopefully some letter series 300's will be there too.

Maybe we M'ers can meet up there. If youre a member of our 300M Enthusiasts club, you should display your membership card on your shirt so we can meet up with each other. Just stick it on your shirt with double sided tape. I'll be lookin for fellow M-owners there. Here is link to the location for the show.

Greg, don't rely on the trip computer, they are OK for rough estimates of MPG, but no substitute for pen and paper when accuracy is desired.
As for the UV, the 300M has excellent window tinting for UV protection of the interior, but if you want more, aftermarket window tining may be the answer. Some posters here from lala land have had their windows tinted and could give you more info.
Besides, that way you can save the comfy leather for yourself!

Nice pics Tim. Notice those Euro spec side marker lights? The "real deal", just like a select few of us creative and safety minded 300M owners over here already have. It's kinda' nice to have a little kinship with our Euro cousins. I'll keep my 3.5 liters and leather though.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Beach, do you ever reset your computer? A .1 mpg fluctuation in all types of driving doesn't seem like enough.

thill381 - It's a shame to remove two of the best parts of the M, the leather interior and the 3.5 litre engine. I wish my speedo went to 240 :)

  • scotianscotian Member Posts: 1,064
As much as I abhor Euro kinship, I wouldn't mind just a little more and get those HID headlights.

Anyway, just received my Club packet. Beautiful! Someone has much too much time on their hands (and I thought generating clock faces was time consuming).
  • sibesibe Member Posts: 102
    Scotian/Ottowrkr:

What's the scoop with HIDs for US based models? I know aftermarket kits are around 900 bucks. Are there any plans for them? I checked on the Xenon bulbs, as close as you can get for 20 bucks (on e-Bay) but due to the angle of the bulb on the "M" they haven't come out with one yet. I have them on my Durango and although they do give a blue shimmer and are brighter than the "blue coated lenses" they are still a far cry from the real thing. So any reason why the "discrimination" between Europe and us?

Just wondering if there would be any advantage/disadvantage in using the Borla 40665 turbo muffler instead of the dynomax 17739? It seems as though they have almost identical dimensions. I think the cost would be a little more. Any opinions would be appreciated. Here's the link to the Borla. http://www.borla.com/uk.melloprimo/?cartID=20010501120822165.247.83.242
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
The Borla is stainless while the Dynomax is aluminized, but you'll pay $100 more for the Borla. Otherwise it's just a matter of which sound you prefer. Also, you'll want to check the input/output of that Borla. The diagram implies that the "A" is the input side, and the dual pipes listed as "B" are the outputs. If that's the case, you would have to do some serious piping contortions to wrap one of those outputs back to the other side of the rear (unless you want to run dual singles out the existing cutout, which I considered).

    -Mike
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
I think the Borla cat-back system that uses that muffler exits only to one side through the existing cutouts.
  • malyelmalyel Member Posts: 46
Thanks for the info. I overlooked the problem with the "A" side. It's not worth the added work.

Sibe-I have gotten 15MPG in bumper to bumper driving for several hours at the Talladega NASCAR race last week. A big V-6 in a 2 ton car eats a lot of gas in stop and go driving. I get around 18 in the city, but it's a lot of 1-2 mile jaunts between stops. I get less MPG's using regular instead of mid grade. My theory is that since the engine generates 15 less HP, it takes more energy to get the car going and negates any benefit of a few cents a gallon. I might be wrong, but that's my opinion. Might not matter for you since you probably don't do much driving at speed. As for leather protectant, get some of the Zaion leather cleaner and protectant (2 separate products). It has a sunscreen ingredient to protect the leather from the ravages of the sun.
thill-how much (in US$) did the M go for there? Otto says they are pretty expensive in the Great White North, so I was wondering about overseas.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
You guys keep talking about a "few cents" for 89 octane. Here in San Diego we're getting robbed blind by the oil companies (even for crappy reformulated underachieving gas). Last night I had the choice of paying $1.85 for 87, $1.95 for 89, and $2.05 for 91. And this at a gas station I consider reasonably priced.

    Bent over at the pumps...

    -Mike
  • rogor2krogor2k Member Posts: 385
Yep, that's correct. The Borla cat-back system replaces everything from the cats back and exits thru the existing notch on the left side. I've heard that it's pretty throaty and you may also have some cabin resonance problems unless you install the annular venturi tubes (available at additional cost) inside the pipes.

It goes for around $500 street price.
  • thill381thill381 Member Posts: 64
The 2.7L w/ cloth pictured was 6,290,000 pesetas, if my broken Spanish serves me right. That is approximately $37,000. I had to ask the sales manager on the price as there was no moroni sticker.
  • intrepidspiritintrepidspirit Member Posts: 662
Don't forget that in the great white north, the dollar is worth only 2/3 of the U.S. dollar. Therefore, a $45,000 car in Cdn. $ is actually $30,000 in U.S. $.

I am from Canada, and during a trip 2 years ago, I was trying to figure out how to buy a car there and get it back to the U.S. without paying duty. The car was actually a few thousand cheaper when translated to U.S.$...

Another interesting thing about looking at cars in Canada was that the "Dodge" Intrepid was the "Chrysler" Intrepid in Canada, with Chrysler lettering on the sides, just like the 300M. And the destination charge (again adjusted for the exchange rate) was identical for a car 40 miles from the Brampton plant as it was thousands of miles away in California!
