Any idea how much this option costs since the worst thing in this car for me persnally is radio sound quality, unless speakers frequency response is to low.

What is the "Semi-floating rear axle" that is featured on the 2003 Axiom. New or newly mentioned feature?

Also the under the seat rear ducts. That is very interesting. With a little more length to them they could provide some decent air flow to the back seats. I also noticed my Anniv. Edition Rodeo has them, too.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
IIRC that is the same, just a newly mentioned item in the marketing stuff.

I saw that twice recently, what does IIRC mean?

    Thanks

I found it quite odd that on a recent trip on the interstate of two and a half hours...I saw two Hummer H2's and not one other Axiom.
  • cptsessocptsesso Member Posts: 116
I have only seen 2 Ax's on the road since I got mine in the beginning of November!!!!!

I am actually considering buying an Axiom a bit later in the year, but i have a question. I have a travel trailer that is around 3500 lbs. I know that this is within the listed towing ability of the vehicle but with the bottoming-out problems that I have read about here, would I have problems towing a trailer of this size?
  • heniopheniop Member Posts: 6
I think that people started buying them finally t saw white one on the higway a week ago,and today wow a green one, which I followed back to back for 5 minutes, what a show on the intersections.think green is a perfect color for this car. Also see more commercials with a new cars like AX so we are an avant-garde :)
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
If you plan on towing often, I'd get a set of OME coil springs or air-bags to help offset the weight. It won't be a problem, but the stiffer rear OME springs will help and are relatively cheap ($120)

Paisan is absolutely correct about the spings on the Axiom. They are a little soft but can be easily upgraded. The Airlift 1000 airbag kit works really well. The great thing about this kit is that the air springs can be inflated or deflated depending on the load. Springs only are about $90 while a kit with an onboard compressor is $200. Other than that, the 3.5 in the Axiom is plenty to tow 3500 pounds.

I have just finished instaling the grill kit from StreetCustomAuto and here is my report.

When the instructions told me to remove the entire front I was a little concerned, however the front came off very easily, cudos to the Axiom design team, and guess what? There's a huge truck bumper behind that fancy plastic. Very comforting.

The grill pieces are expanded stainless steel and mount behind the louvre slot with small brass screws which have to be screwed into the plastic, so care is required. I went down to the hardware store and got some #2 large pattern washers because I felt that the split washer and screw head weren't big enough to stop the grill from popping off. The kit installed fairly easily, not technically difficult, just a little time consuming.

HINT: Make sure that the expansion pattern on the grill pieces is oriented in the same direction.

The truck looks a little more edgy now, but way cool. Putting the front back on was just a easy as taking it off.
  • cptsessocptsesso Member Posts: 116
That's great sowr. I just received my kit last week. It will be a while before I have the time to instal it though. It sounds relatively easy just time consuming like you said.
  • icedog97icedog97 Member Posts: 141
sowr...just curious which way you installed the pieces...with the curved part toward the Axiom or away from it?

Also, what color is your ax? We have the blonde-grey and I showed my wife a piture of how it would look (from ebay) but she seemed skeptical.
  • cptsessocptsesso Member Posts: 116
Go to this link and show your wife the pics.

    http://club.vmag.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/000075.html

If you scroll down the messages you will find 2 pics of a blue Ax with the kit installed. From the pics it looks good. My Ax is the Anthracite Gray. The inserts should go well with both my color and your Blonde Gray.
  • sowrsowr Member Posts: 69
Icedog97, I installed the pieces with the curve away from the Axiom, although it doesn't really matter, the stainless is very ductile and can be bent in any direction. My Axiom is Anthracite, so the stainless (which will dull over time to a more satin finish) provides a contrast, but not excessively so. I think it looks good, whereas I think black just wouldn't really make any difference. I'm not sure what material the black ones are. Perhaps they're painted stainless, hope it doesn't chip.

Anyone care to send me a writeup for isuzu-suvs.com? :)

  • icedog97icedog97 Member Posts: 141
I emailed the guy from Street Custom Auto and he said the black ones are just primed and then painted flat black.

I'm not sure when I will be able to put mine on...we have had 18 days below freezing (most days in the teens) and my garage isn't big enough for me to work on the car and keep the door closed!!! so maybe the first signs of some warm weather and I'll install mine.

I'm still trying to decide if I should keep them all steel or paint the ones in the middle black (including ther 7th, to be mailed later piece)..it might give it and interesting look on my blonde-grey ax.

    Thanks again for the feedback...

Does anyone know where we can go to get great(jobber)prices on Isuzu factory parts. I saw that the '03 Ax come with a spoiler and I would like one. Does anyone have a picture of the Ax with the factory roof rack? I am a New owner, I bought a new XS 4x4 loaded for $24,500(nice rebate).

Care to give more details re St. Charles?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
If you go to the vendors section on http://isuzu-suvs.com there should be a link. In the Isuzu community they are generally the cheapest place for OEM parts.

I'm looking into the lift kit made by Independant4X, 98+ Rodeo. This should fit the AX, correct? I called the guy and all he said was well, if it's a Rodeo suspension it should work.

Does anyone know if there is a way to reset the elapsed time on the display? I checked the manual and it doesn't indicate how to reset or start the ET from 0.
  • twocartwocar Member Posts: 95
I think after you get it in elapsed time mode you merely hit the reset button and it will start ticking from "0".
  • cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
You need to do two things. One show the elapsed time on the MID . Next set the center display to a function that can not be reset, such as current mpg (not average mpg), then press reset. The elapsed time should be reset to zero. If the center display is set to something that can be reset, that number will be reset instead of the elapsed time. I hope that makes sense. It's harder to explain than it is to do.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The lift should work. All it is is larger springs, and shocks, and ball-joint spacers in the front, IIRC.

A lifted Axiom? Man-o-man I like the way you are thinking!! I have never seen this done, but I bet it would look awesome. Please keep us up to date if you decide to do it. Pictures, details, etc.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I've seen one lifted on Planet Isuzoo, but that was a remote controlled model :) We actually did a lift kit, body lift, and rear LSD on the Radioshack remote controlled Axiom at one of the Uwharrie trips. :)

Paisan, everytime I search on Lift and Axiom I get that crazy article! I'm constantly trying to get information on this Isuzu model. Too bad I bought the 2wd. When my bro and I went out to the desert we really didn't even need 4x4, even on the stock tires! Looking to upgrade the tires as well.
  • sowrsowr Member Posts: 69
Paisan I can give you a write up. Let me know your requirements.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
the writeups in the "how-to" section on http://isuzu-suvs.com they will give you an idea of a good writeup. Then e-mail it to me and I'll post it up! :)

At 13,500 miles the brakes on my Axiom squeak when I back out of my garage. Cannot tell which wheel or wheels are squeaking. It seems to only happen backing up and not when I stop going forward. Any ideas what the problem is.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
only at start up or all the time while backing? Two theories. One is that rust could be forming overnight or in a couple of days it is parked and causing the noise until it wears off. The second is that the back side of the pad surface may have uneven wear and not making clean contact with the disk and therefore causing squeeking.
  • axiomloveraxiomlover Member Posts: 216
I am experiencing the same promblem with my 8,500 mile Axiom. Actually, I am not sure if it is the breaks or not, but squeaking is only audible when backing up and the wheels are turned one way or another. I was going to bring it up to my dealer at the next visit.

I also noticed that when it is really cold (15 F or below), the front shocks (or maybe springs) squeak when depressed. It sounds like driving a 1985 Chevy Caprice. It goes away after I drive for a few miles.

I would like peoples opinion on PCM Reprograming(like a chip). I have heard of a few places that do this to GM stlye computers(Like ours). Anyone have any thoughts?
  • n2mysvtcobran2mysvtcobra Member Posts: 6
Does anyone know the part number for the new spoiler on the '03 models? I would like it for my '02. I have check with St. Charles and a few other dealers but no luck. St. Chatles said if I can find out a part number they can get it.

PS what size fuel injectors does the Ax use?
  • usg8110usg8110 Member Posts: 6
I had a squeaking problem at 3000 miles. I took my Axiom in to the dealer. They were unable to see any problems with the brakes other than some small amount of rust buid-up on the brakes. The tech greased a few areas on the brakes and sent me on my way. I have not noticed any squeaking since the visit to dealer.
  • twocartwocar Member Posts: 95
I have noticed a squeaking as well with 20,600+ miles but believe mine is the chair mount. I had the vehicle off and heard the squeak and have duplicated the noise while rocking around in the driver's seat. Just a thought for you others with a squeak.

As a new owner I have added heated seats, hot headlights{80w&100wbulbs} Piaa driving lights nad teh roof rack. Are there additions I can do for roll bars, Axiom feels a little wallowey, anyone find that rear air deflector for the 2003 and a grill setup like in the SUV magazine? This vechicle compels me to add custom touches, but I can't find enough of them. Air intake would be good, any suggestions?

    You mean sway bars?

Air intake? Do a K&N drop in filter.

  • pallairepallaire Member Posts: 9
Yes that is what I meant, it is early here!!!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
On my trooper i put in poly bushings for the sway bars, made a good improvement. Also upgraded my front torsion bars and added Old Man Emu rear springs.

Is it me or do they look alike, especially when comparing them from the rear?

Check out the pictures of both vehicles (BTW, there are new pics of a black '03 Ax on Edmunds - it looks sharp).

Just purchased an 02 Axiom XS 2wd. I got it for $22500 out the door. Was pleased with the price!
I really like it so far. I've gotten 19mpg combined city and highway. Better than I expected.
Things I would change however are.....
Rear doors don't open very far....
When closing the sunroof, you have to press the switch twice
No automatic daylights (knew this going in)
The doors don't automatically lock once you get in and start the Axiom (my Olds Intrigue did this and my wife's minivan does that at a certain low speed). It may just be that I need to read the owners manual.
I would like to just depress the cruise button and leave it always on rather than have to turn it on and then adjust the cruise.
More storage cubbies. The cd changer in the armrest hogs the whole thing.
These are more minor than anything else and I found similar issues with just about everything else I looked at.
What sealed the deal for me is that these are unique, you don't see many of them, they pricing was great considering the sticker was nearly $30000, and the warranty.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Sunroof, cruise control and door locks are all very similar to the other japanese manufacturers. The auto-locking doors is a GM thing. If you put an aftermarket alarm in you can probably have them wire it up to do that.

The cruise control is great IMHO. I like to power it on, rather than have the control unit constantly being powered (and burn out quicker)

The moonroof is so you don't crush anyone's head in the roof :)

    -mike
  • bestokesbestokes Member Posts: 2
With the moonroof, I wish it would close continually as long as you're holding the switch. As it is now, you have to let go and then grab it again. I agree that you wouldn't want a touch and close sunroof for the exact reasons you stated above.
Is it just me or does the Isuzu roof rack (which wasn't installed on my Axiom) costs a lot? It seems that roof racks are pretty standard typicall on other vehicles and usually not very expensive. What are other options besides Isuzu's?
  • leedavidyoungleedavidyoung Member Posts: 102
Their are several companies that offer after-market racks. I saw an axiom with a roof mounted bike rack from saris.

    www.sarisracks.com

Check out Mike's website under "vendors". It's been a great help to me for after-market suppliers.

Thanks for your opinion. If you look at the tail gate, GX 470 and Axiom have more in common than with any other SUV (IMHO).
