Does anyone know of a vendor selling either a discounted or used replacement Rear Entertainment System ("RES") ceiling unit (everything that mounts in the ceiling)?

The dealer price for a RES ceiling unit is nearly $2600, even though the *entire* RES (including the player unit in the dash and an upgraded head unit in the dash) is only a $1600 option on a new 2007 Odyssey. My ceiling unit (but not my dvd player) was stolen from my 2005 Odyssey, so it sure seems like the cost to replace just part of it should be less than $1600.00.

None are on Ebay now and none have been on Ebay in the last 60 days. Froogle.Google doesn't turn up anything useful. Any suggestions?

Here's how you save $500-600 if you want the Honda product:
    http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/jsp/mws/prddisplay.jsp?inputstate=5&cat- - cgry1=Odyssey&catcgry2=2005&catcgry3=5DR+EXL+RES%2FNAVI&catcgry4=KA5AT&catcgry5=- - REAR+DISPLAY+UNIT

or, consider using someone else's display:

i bet you could go to a car audio specialist and find out what would be an easy install. i presume since yours is missing, you can see what you need to do. probably you could purchase an aftermarket display, and have someone else put it in.

Thanks for the link to Majestic Honda's site. I had spent over an hour Googling, but didn't find anything remotely close to Majestic's price. You just saved me hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Thank you very much. :D
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
Majestic's site has helped me and numerous other people.

Their exploded parts / sub-system views are great. the prices are a side-benefit. ;)

Funny, after making that post last night, I commented to my wife, hey, this person is gonna save hundreds based on one hyperlink if he/she chooses to purchase OEM. Even more if aftermarket.

Isn't Edmunds great? :shades: Unfortunately my wife doesn't think so.

You are most welcome. As they say, pass it on.
  • pattonpatton Member Posts: 4
I read your note on the DVD player. I've also purchased items from majestic as well. Did you install the OEM DVD on your 03 van from scratch after you purchased it or did you just replace the player like the other person is doing. I would like to install a complete system.

    Curious.....
  • pattonpatton Member Posts: 4
Has anyone come up with a coin/change holder for their van. Prior to the new design in 05 they had one in the pull out cup holder. The new design doesn't have one. Other that using the cup holders when the center console is up what has anyone done.

    Thanks.....
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
no. i didn't purchase any DVD stuff for my '03. my wife and i are sort of cheap. to play DVDs for the kids, we use a personal computer / laptop (screen is big right?), and we use a cassette adapter and run the audio into the stereo.

i had good luck purchasing the OEM CD player that works with the LX radio&cassette. I bought that on Handa's site.
    http://www.handaaccessories.com/odyelec02.html

follow that link. you'll see the two DVD systems they sell. examine the installation instructions. now then, that should give you an idea what you need to do. if you wanted to do a complete system but aftermarket.

    isn't the internet great?
  • nbkramer1nbkramer1 Member Posts: 7
I have an '07 and I have one. If you open the cup holder on the dash board, right in the middle of the cup holders you will find a flat top and a little button next to it. Somehow or another you push/pull the little button and it opens a coin pocket. If it doesn't work maybe go into a dealership and ask them to show you on a floor model. :D

COuld you tell me how to remove the front bumber and the panels without damaging the clips? Thanks

Can anyone tell me if the 2007 Odyssey PlusOne seat in the EXL... Is it removable? Can I take it completly out and store it in my house? or can u only do that with the second row center console of the touring model?
    Thanks
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,837
Yes, you can take it out entirely. You can also pop off the cushion and fold down the back to use it as a tray.

NOt that I have done it, but I believe you can also slide the RH side middle seat over if you take the +1 out to make a bench seat.

I just leave it in our Ody. Actually use it more often than I expected we would.

The installation manual in PDF format covers this and can be found at bernardi.com. The removal of the front bumper was not difficult following these instructions. Does require two people in my opinion.
  • anhleanhle Member Posts: 19
Thank you. Could you tell why it may require 2 people? It's hard to pull it out, or it is very heavy, etc? I wonder if my wife can help-:)

Just got a 2007 EX-L and need to urgently buy rubber floor mats. A few questions:

    1. I notice that both the WeatherTech floor mats and Floorliner have a one-piece mat in the second row. However, the second row in my van has an under-floor compartment, which obviously will not be usable with these mats. Are there other mats on the market that have an opening for the under-floor compartment?

    2. I notice that the WeatherTech floorliner has high edges. Does this interfere with walking around inside the van?

    3. Which website(s) sells the rubber cargo tray/mat used just in the cargo area (besides the Honda site)?

I appreciate all the advice. Thanks greatly.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
I looked at several different mats and ended up with the Honda ones. It had the separated 2nd row allowing access to the lazy susan which was a priority. I bought everything from honda dealers on Ebay.

I got my new 07 EX-L Odyssey on Dec 23, 2006. Just recently I suddenly noticed that the alignment of the windows seal part outside the left window of second row is quite different from that of right side window (They supposedly should be symmetric). More annoyingly, I found that there is a small broken dent on the edge of the window glass. I went to see the HONDA dealer and they told me as long as it's not a funtionality problem, they would not take the responsibility to do anything. It's indeed a small problem but it really bothers me because it is from a brand new car!!! Does anyone here have similar experience? In that case, how do you deal with the dealer? Should I just ignore that and suck it up? Thanks in advance for any inputs.

try this sight... they are Honda but cheapier than directly from honda... we always buy for them for both our acuras and honda....

Hi there, I just had new (after market ebay kind) roof mount 9" with DVD installed in my 2007 Ody EXL- it obstructs the rear view mirror view rather badly, one cannot really see anything on the back in the mirror...wife is pretty upset. Is this a norm with all the Roof mount monitors? I figured I can drive it on the highway with kids watching without looking back, but she is safety fraek :-)
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
you can't say a roof entertainment system isn't going to obstruct rear view. it will to some extent.

if she is a safety freak I guarentee you, she doesn't have the side view mirrors adjusted optimally. so i suggest first of all, setting up the side mirrors for optimum angle. that is

1). leaning head against driver window and adjusting side mirror till the vehicle's side just disappears, then
2). leaning over the center table, and adjusting passenger mirror till side of vehicle just disappears.

you and she will need a few days to get used to it, but when you have, there's no going back. this is the proper setting for both side view mirrors to complement the center-rear view mirror, and also minimizes the blind spots on both sides of the vehicle.

now then the rear mirror, even if the RES screen is obstructing some of the immediate rear view, should still show plenty of view below the unit. yes/no? what does she need to see, the whites of the person that is tailgating you? :surprise:

if not, i presume you could mount a temporary (suction cup mount) rear-view mirror off center windshield for this purpose for times when the unit is folded down.

okay, i'll ask. why didn't you go with the OEM unit? :shades:

this question must have come up before. why not google for other possible solutions / mitigations? good luck.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Well, some aftermarkets will block rear vision more than others. The OEM system doesn't block my vision at all, which was a positive for the (very expensive) OEM system. I've had two other aftermarket DVD systems that failed shortly after a year so I decided to give the OEM stuff a shot. But I'm sure you saved gobs of money with an aftermarket Ebay system, so unfortunately that comes with another cost. A mad wife. Good luck with that.... :P

Tell your wife that truckers log a bazillion miles a year with a very good safety record, and they don't have a mirror for looking behind them. I'm sure that will help!
  • jakefljakefl Member Posts: 21
To tell you the truth, the Ebay unit cost was only $240 dlivered, TintLand installed it for $125- total cost $365, dealer wanted like $1800, this one came with TV also. THere is no comparison cost wise if you use such only occasionally. Honestly, just couldn't justify $1800 for 9" DVD... maybe I am weird ;-) How long that one lasts is an open question...Will play with the side mirrors as well. I bought at Target a little wireless back camera with small display for $99, I wired it to reverse lights but this weekend will wire with regular rear lamps so I can turn on either parking or driving lights and see display all the time plus little mirror next to the radio as you guys suggested should do the trick and make her stop complaining :-) Thanks for your input.
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
OK, don't extend the DVD down before backing up. ;)

ummm, yeah, i had fairly good results with the backup camera as i've documented (mine is a contrast and brightness model) via pepboys. same cost with discount/rebate.

anyhow, you know you don't really want to be looking at that little LCD display when you are driving or on the highway. too much heads down time. unless you want to see drivers immediately behind you getting angry because your kids are dumping fluids or something like cheese crackers out the windows. :shades:

better / safer to be using those properly adjusted side view mirrors. trust me on the side-view mirror adjustments. once you get used to it, i promise, you won't go back. so so so many people have theirs angled in too much, and have too large of blind spots.
  • jakefljakefl Member Posts: 21
How is your reception with wireless backup camera? My gets hell of a statics in the garage, outside of it gets better, but still screen jumps here and there, did you see any way to adjust?
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
in proximity to the house, there is a little static backing up. i presume this is comming from my linksys wireless router which is 2.4GHz like lots of other stuff.

when i back up in a nearby cul-de-sac, there's much less to appreciably no interference. i think they aren't technophiles up at that end of the street. ;)

try backing up in a parking lot like at a school or grocery store and compare. or, if you have a router, try turning it off and do a comparison test.

the instructions illude to interference from these devices. hey, it's only $99.

May seem like a silly question and I hope I can explain this right. I have an 07 exl Odyssey. In the second row if you look under the seat.... the one that is able to slide over if you take hte plus one seat out...well it has a plastic removable cover over the bar against the floor. If you look over at the plus one seat...all u see is the white bar... there is no plastic cover like on the seat next to it covering the bar... so the bar is exposed. Is there supposed to be one of those plastic cover pieces there too? or is my car missing that piece? I called the dealer and left him a message today but he never called back... I have no patience to wait till monday... if he even gives me an honest answer then!!
    thanks!
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Hard to explain, but it's just being stored under that seat until you remove the plus-one. When you remove the plus-one seat, you then pop the cover out and place it over the now exposed floor hardware. Also, if you slide the bucket to the center, then you put the cover back over the outside position hardware. This keeps the floor/mounts from being exposed when one of the seats is removed.
  • 07tahoemom07tahoemom Member Posts: 8
so what i am wondering is there actually supposed to be one of these covers in BOTH places over each bar... the bucket seat and the plus one seat? Cause I only have one over the bucket seat and it appears the one for the plus one seat is missing...
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
No, there's only one. You only need one. If the plus one is out, you use the cover there. If you slide the bucket to the center, then you use it where the bucket used to be. It's just to provide a flat surface for walking.

    Hi,

I would like to hot wire / switched wire my radar detector.
Without using a voltmeter, what color wire is it under driver's side fuse box. (I see red, red/white, blue, green....)

    Thanks!

I was wondering if you made a choice and found a good solution - I'm in the same boat and was wondering if the 150$ rubber floor mats price was the best that I was going to be able to do. Thanks,

    Hi,

Which works better, the backup sensors or the camera? Or should one have both? How long does the camera take to turn on after you turn the car on? W/o a camera, one just turns the car on, hits reverse, and drive. So is a delay introduced?

    Thanks, Dan
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
We have the OEM nav/backup camera and I give it a 5 out of 10. When starting the car, you have to wait for the NAV to boot before the camera will come on. I can start car, buckle up, and still have to wait before the camera will come on. Annoying. Additionally, any amount of dirt/wet/etc. on the camera lens and it's virtually useless. It's also slow to react to bright sun. It's useful, but not fool-proof.

IMHO, if I had to pick between sensors and camera, I'd take the sensors. Having both would be ideal.
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
if you went with the aftermarket $100 system we'd been discussing, it would come on as soon as you put it into reverse (the wireless camera is powered by voltage being sent to the white backup lamp on one side of the vehicle).

it's a viable option. the nice thing about the model i installed on our ODY, it has both a brightness and a contrast control setting.

i cannot say what is more effective / safer, etc.

    Hello All,
Can I buy genuine Honda "All season Floor Mats" for the Odyssey, online at a cheaper rate than what is offered by the dealer? I was looking for the 07 Odyssey.

    Jalimey,
Thanks for the link. The prices mentioned on the website is almost 80 bucks less than the dealer, for the cargo mats.
Also what is the Taupe color for the Floor Mats. I have a Grey interior. Will it match with it?

    Thanks

  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Taupe is pretty much tan. If you have grey, you'll want to go with the black mats.

Another place to look is handa-accessories.com

if i'm not mistaken, floor mats come with your vehicle:

    http://automobiles.honda.com/models/specifications_full_specs.asp?ModelName=Odyssey&Category=5

now then, are you looking for mats for adverse weather? the ones you see at the handa site or accessories site should be replacements for what you have, but nothing better.

are you looking for something like this:

Has anyone been successful acquiring the 2nd row middle seat for the touring model? I know it comes standard with the EX and EX-L but have no idea why you cannot get one for the Touring model.
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
yeah, the parts aren't available for the EXL-T, but EX and EXL they are:
    http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/jsp/mws/catdisplay.jsp?inputstate=4&catcgry1=Odyssey&catcgry2=2007&catcgry3=5DR+EXL-T+RES&catcgry4=KA5AT&catcgry5=

possibly, it's a weight issue with the PAX tires/rims and the suspension setup (and one additional passenger) for the EXL-T vs. the other.

"Has anyone been successful acquiring the 2nd row middle seat for the touring model? I know it comes standard with the EX and EX-L but have no idea why you cannot get one for the Touring model."

Well, for one thing, a middle seat in the 2nd row of a Touring WOULDN'T HAVE A SEATBELT.

Honda also MAY have revised the seat mounting points in the Touring model with the express purpose of preventing people from adding the 8th seat when there is no seatbelt for such a position.

I have a Honda EX-L R&N. I see sometimes that the A/C is on, but the display doesnt say AC ON. When I switch off the AC, it then says AC off.
    Is this an issue?
Is the AC at times activated automatically and is not displayed with an "A/C ON" message?

    Thanks

That's pretty much how it works. In fact, if the display doesn't read "A/C OFF" the A/C is running constantly. I discovered this by idling one night, I could hear the compressor cycling constantly. I then hit "A/C Off" and it stopped cycling. We try to make a point of turning the A/C off manually when it's not needed and our gas mileage improves when we do this. Obviously doesn't matter in the summer or when you need conditioned air (humid, raining, etc.) but for 90% of the winter we ran with the A/C off. If you put the system in "auto" and then turn the A/C off it will still maintain the temp automatically.

I keep seeing new cars coming with this same "feature" and I'm not sure what the thought process is behind it. I suppose they know the EPA rating isn't effected by the A/C so what do they care?

We want to install a bike rack on our Odyssey to hold 2-4 bikes. We've heard the hitch bike rack is best and therefore need to install a hitch. Anyone got any ideas as to best place to get hitch and where to get it installed, and how much we should look at paying for this?
    Thanks,
    Jalimey.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,837
You can go to any trailer place and get a hitch put on (or do it yourself if you are ambitious).

You can get the Honda part, or aftermarket. I think Hidden Hitch is probably the best of the non-Honda units.

OEM is ~300. Aftermark probably about $150.

I got the HOnda one, and had it put on at the trailer place for $40.

The big difference between the Honda and aftermarket is that the Honda unit tucks up behind the rear bumper. You do have to cut a notch for the receiver, but it doesn't look bad if you are careful.

2 benefits to this. 1, you don't have a big ugly hitch hanging below your van (look at some vans in a parking lot to see what I mean), and 2), it sits higher. Less chance of dragging it, and the receiver sits higher off the ground, so the rack doesn't side so low.

Just make sure to get the large reciever (I think it is 2", whatever the Honda piece is). They also sell 1-1/4" units that are much lighter duty.

Oh, and get a good quality rack. Safer, and much easier to use.
