It happens when it's cold outside, below 15C, most likely to occur and be noticeable at around 5C-10C. Only happens if the engine was left over night to sit and got cold. The car starts fine. The automatic shifting takes a little longer to change gears, revving the car a little higher than usually. The engine makes this fast knocking sounds on acceleration only and this sound increases as your speed and hence revs do.
The car drives like new and shifts smooth in less than 3 mins. It's not causing any problems to me, but I want to make sure it will not cause any engine damage.

Hell, the 2.3-liter four in my '94 Mazda B2300 pickup pinged incessantly (I mean incessantly, every trip, every mile) from 8,000 miles until I sold it at 114,000 miles -- and knock on wood (or should I say "on head") it was still after more than 100,000 miles of it. Aggravating as hell, but the truck never broke down.

Townhall19--yes, the 2.0L has been around for a while BUT it hasn't always been ULEV rated which I think is the issue here.
And what's wrong with 15-inch wheels? Why all of a sudden does everyone have a preoccupation with wheel size? Is this Freudian? After all, the 14-inch wheels on my 1992 LX served me fine, and the 13s on my '78 Corolla got me where I needed to go too.
I'll be replacing those drum brake shoes less frequently than your disc pads, plus there's less chance of my drums warping due to car washing. My "un-reinforced chassis" (whatever that means) is doing fine, and I suspect it too would save my skin in a 45-mph hydroplaning accident much like my first "un-reinforced" '92 did 10 years ago.
My engine isn't pinging, my car does not "death rattle" upon starting, and I don't have a god-awful crease running up the center of my hood either. And oh -- my headlight lenses will be much cheaper to replace should they ever be damaged, since they're separate from the signal assemblies.
One more thing -- my car's half paid-off now. And I paid less for mine than you did for yours. I'm the one who's laughing ... all the way to the bank.

"Death" in this case doesn't necessarily mean harmful...just extremely irritating and somewhat frightening.
Hee hee, it's Midlife Crisis time!!!

About the Miata, I'd wait and see what the Mazdaspeed version will be like.
If you do photo shop one shoot us a copy.
"I'd buy that for a dollar"
Kudos to anybody that knows where that quote is from.
What are you going to buy for the other cheek??
(ducks, runs, and puts on his flameproof suit)..
Todd: What I'm experiencing is not that bad (death rattle sounds pretty serious). It's just a very rapid noise that one can hear on cold morning starts when it is cold outside. The noise can only be heard when accelerating, and stops after 2-3 mins. I heard the same sound in my 93 Civic, but I had so many problems with that car, so that's why I wanted to find out more. It's most likely just a cold engine that takes (like any engine) a minute or two to warm up.
Meade: You said you paid $15.300 before TTL. What is TTL? I paid $24.500 for mine, taxes, interest, all dealer fees included. This was my final price. $15.300 is about $23.560 CDN at an exchange of 1.54%. If that's what you paid, PLUS taxes, then Mike and I must have paid less for our 2001s. I will hold on the "HE HE" comments until you tell me what that TTL is.
Dinu
Can't brag about that one (price) now, can we?
Dinu
It is well known that Canadian prices, when translated into US dollars, are considerably better than US prices. Hence all of the hoopla over grey market cars.
The real comparison would be what a '99 1.8 Pro (like Meade's) cost new vs. a new '01 or '02 2.0 Pro all in Canuk Buck. Don't forget to adjust for options - for example, Meade's '99 is a manual.
It's irrelevant, really, unless someone has a time machine handy. Inflation is a reality with which me all must deal. So is the fact that one can no longer purchase a brand new 1.8 equipped Pro - unless there's some crazy dealer (probably Canadian ;-) ) who's been hoarding them.
... and I can gaurantee you that, if I had a time machine, I wouldn't be using it to go back and pick up a brand new '99 Pro.
You know, for a small fee, I can get any of you in a Canadian-spec PRO 2.0 ES. Only 43.000kms and runs like new. Any takers? Only $18.000US. I know, I know, you can buy an MP3 for that much, but it won't have the Canadian speedometer, will it?

OK, that's the story of how I met my Protege.
You guys can dicker about special financing and deferred payments all you want. That just makes you pay longer and owe more when it's time to trade in the car. I paid under invoice and got a great rate (and a few things greatly discounted or thrown in for free, like my extended warranty and cassette deck) because I've been a customer at my dealership for 12 years and five vehicles. Let's talk bottom line: my monthly payments are $284 (including extended warranty to 6 years/100,000 miles) and the payoff on my Protege is now $8,748 with 32 payments left.
Paul: You coming to MAPP IV? Now that I officially have lost FIFTY pounds (stepped on the scale this morning) this year, we'll compare "cheek sizes" when we see each other again. And since I'm well on my way back to what I weighed in high school, we'll see which of us more resembles that remark in the near future.
(All of you who don't know what our old pal "Vocus" looks like (talk about the pot calling the kettle African-American), go visit the yahoo-know-what group and look at the MAPP III pictures.)
Sure, at my all-time highest weight, my other cheek would have had to ride shotgun in a Miata. My Miata is going to be my gift to myself for my hard work and resultant cheek-slimming! So what if it's on the Top Ten Gay Cars list?
Meade
P.S. Dale, you really get around lately ...
It's good to see everyone is still around. I've got over 16,000 on my Pro, and is actually overdue for its 15,000 mile service.

44 Proteges now confirmed! Hank or Wil, have you guys contacted Mazda NA about this???
Meade
How is defering a ZERO interest loan bad? Yeah, I pay 6 months longer, but I am paying no interest on it. Because of the time value of money, you would want to defer a zero interest loan AS LONG AS YOU CAN. I know there are places for my money that pay better than 0%.
"Let's talk bottom line: my monthly payments are $284 (including extended warranty to 6 years/100,000 miles)"
You are leaving out some info here. How much did you put down? What rate did you get? At $284, you are paying $13,600 INCLUDING financing so you must have put something down. You can't base your theory that you paid less simply by monthly payments. Geez. I have my finance calculator waiting.....
Paul: You are neither a pot nor a kettle.
Meade: I get around quite nicely, thank you, because I am the proud owner of a wonderful Protege.
Now everybody try to have a nice day.

It's more fun that way.
(You guys notice how slow and boring this discussion is while I'm not here on the weekends -- in recent weeks it's dropped off the top 10 entirely -- and then, upon my return Mondays, we're right back up at No. 1 again? I'm gloating. I love being so popular.)

I am not coming to MAPP IV, I told you that before. I don't have a Mazda, so I am not coming. I already went to one car event this month, so that's about enough.
And I didn't know the Miata was on the "gay cars" list. The Jetta is number one, but that didn't stop me from getting one. If I worried about what people thought all the time, I would probably never leave the house. Get what makes you happy.

Hey, I don't mind if my car appeals to a bunch of guys ... car envy is a guy thing anyway, isn't it? Just remember ... if it's a great car it'll be high on a LOT of lists, not just THAT one ...
;-)
Meade
P.S. Paul, don't fret. I wasn't upset with you. That's my humor. Don't you know me by now?
Hell, I can't even begin to think about getting into a Miata. It has more to do with the fact that I am 6'4 and have a bad back though.
Meade
I will own another ragtop in the next few years, I missed mine so much this summer.
I think I'm going to make it a 3rd car so I can get a 2 seater. So it will just be a matter of what exists at the time I buy. Right now though Miata and MR2 are neck and neck in my book.
The following specs came from each corporation's web site:
Headroom:
Protege (front, w/o moonroof): 39.3
MR2: 37.3 (ouch)
Miata: 37.1 (yeow!)
Hmmm. My 6-1 torso only has about 3 inches of headroom in my non-moonroofed Protege now. I dunno if I can deal with at least 2 inches' loss. Might just have to get out that torch now!
Meade
Posting too?
(Paul, you must have, because one of your recent posts posted twice too.)
