the 100,000 mile warranty is only for the First buyer, per hyundai.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Have you ever seen a 54-57 bug? pretty rare...especially in your parts.

The bug wipers grew in size over the years up to about 13" I think.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    Got one down the street.

Why in my parts? A lot of foreign cars do and did come right off the ships down in Norfolk, less than 100 miles away. There are a veritable crapload of older VWs around here!

    P.S. 13 is still tiny, ain't it?
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
not that they weren't there, but cars don't last a long time when they throw salt on the road.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The second hand warranty is 60K miles on the powertrain and the entire car. The basic warranty on the ECHO expires tomorrow (he will be over 36K), but its powertrain warranty is 60K as well. And Toyota has a better reputation than Hyundai.

Actually, my friend has a record alot worse than mine. I have 3 points on my license, all speeding (surprise, surprise), but only 1 of them shows on my insurance (I don't know why, and don't care!). He has had his license suspended for having too many points once (9 of them, but only 1 left at this time). And he just got a DUI back in February as well, and had his license restricted when he had that. He didn't get any points for it though, just probation and the restriction, which has since expired.

Drinking and driving is the reason he had to get another car. Had he not been driving with 2 beers in him, perhaps his reaction time would have been better and he would have avoided the Jersey wall. To his credit, I have seen many cars spin out of control where he did. They really need a warning there, because it's a pretty bad spot.

    Heh, heh!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Oooh, that was a low blow.

But seriously, I have seen people spin around there countless times and hit the wall.

He was going a little fast, and the 1997 Sentra he had was pretty bad in the rain (I drove it a couple times, and traction sucked). It only had 13" tires, and no ABS brakes, so it was pretty bad.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
    I don't think so.
It was very well suited to the situation.

    One more time...

this is not a "chit chat" discussion -- there are several of those in various owners clubs. I encourage all of you to take advantage of those discussions, since by definition, they are exactly where this kind of conversation is completely appropriate, welcomed and encouraged.

Please don't misunderstand -- I am not asking you to stop this line of conversation. I'm just asking you to hold it in a non-focused discussion - Protege Posse seems like a good candidate, but there are similar discussions in the Volkswagen, Hyundai and *all* other Owners Clubs - pick one and then everyone can meet there to continue.

If anyone doesn't understand my point, just look back through all the posts that have been made today.

I would really appreciate your cooperation and your understanding.

Thanks. I emailed them my story. We shall see if they use it or not.

I know a guy who has an 02 P5...he swapped out the horn for a Mercedes one...said it was easy to do; they were compatible and all. Mercedes horn was certainly more assertive.

Now you're going to ask me which model of Mercedes, and I have no idea.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I sent an email to Jeannine about my experiences, and she told me she would gladly forward it to the writer at the Chicago Tribune and he would be in touch. Too cool! Thanks for the info, guys.

you all are talking about improving the horn of the protege, quick funny story, i was next to a ford expedition, he was trying to get the attention of the driver who just cut him off, when he hit the horn, it was actually a train horn with the air compressor hooked up and boy what it loud. i spoke to him at the next traffic light and he said it cost him about 500 dollars, but does he get attention, plus later he admitted it probably was illegal.
  • theparallaxtheparallax Member Posts: 361
I bought it at Pep Boys for about $25. It's a dual horn kit they sell there that sounds deeper than the meep meep the stock horn puts out. I never got around to installing the other horn in the package. I put it to use today when an idiot pulled out in front of me at a stop sign where I had the right of way. Hehe heh....

    Here's a pic (it's the tuba-shaped thing above the bumper re-bar):

I think the horn suits the Pro's diminutive import stature quite well. It adds character without being obnoxious, unlike the train horn.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Well, it's true that the diminutive horn suits the diminutive size of the Protege.

But sometimes one wants something a little more than diminutive...like when that semi is about to cut you off.
  • theparallaxtheparallax Member Posts: 361
...this regular on the ProtegeClub forum rear ended the back of a semi then flipped 3 times going 80 on the interstate. Walked away w/ a broken hand. A miracle..

of the excellent crash worthiness of the Protege's famous triple-H body reinforcement.

kinda make you feel just a tad safer in your car now doesn't it? ;-)
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Really, my friend, you didn't have to take your car apart THAT MUCH just to show us your horn!?

was wondering what the 30k tune up was running at different dealers, here in ohio, i called 4 dealers and confirmed the same work and got 4 different prices, low was 275 dollars and high was 321 dollars. even though i plan to do the air filter myself and plugs to save money. p.s. i was told there is no replaceable fuel filter in the 2001 protege, its in the gas tank and never needs replacing.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
I plan on changing the oil, oil filter, air filter and spark plugs myself.

I also plan on rotating the wheels and lubricating the hinges and weatherseals.

Inspecting the front brake pads is easy. I don't think the rear drum pads need anything now (I think replacing them every other time I replace front pads should be OK).

I had the coolant flushed and refilled within the last year (I have this done every 2 years instead of going by mileage).

Am I missing something really big by not going to the dealership for a 30,000 mile service? I figure the first big service is going to be at 60,000 miles (with the exception of the tasks I'll do myself...I prefer the a la carte method), which seems to be mostly replacing the accessory belts.

BTW, I've found that doing a couple of the easier tasks doesn't really save that much money (maybe $30-40), since the "30k" service is a bundle of services. However, I just prefer to do as much as I can tolerate myself. I've had a number of goofs (stripped drain pan plug, cross-threaded wheel studs etc.) perpetrated by careless mechanics.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I went to my service writer and asked him for a listing of what's done at 30K miles. He very nicely printed me a copy. We then went over each item and I deselected several I do myself or have done elsewhere (i.e. tire rotation, oil change and air filter change). He deducted that from the ~$325 total and I wound up paying about two and a half for my 30K service.

Was that a Gen1 Protege? Those cars do have pretty good crash safety, it looks like.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
When you are coming to a dead stop on your protege, does the speedometer kind-of hover between 10-0mph, and come down slowly or does it come down fast, as fast as you are braking?

    Please do respond
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Paul: I can speak to that remark with first-hand (and first-neck and -chest) experience! ;-)

Chikoo: I'll have to check on the way home today and let you know tomorrow morning. Never really studied it that hard.

Just out of curiosity, why do you ask?

I left for work really early (6:10 a.m.) and it was still dark. After leaving my immediate neighborhood I got out on U.S. 360, a six-lane divided highway with a speed limit of 45 in our suburbian area. This guy in a pickup had been in front of me on the two-lane part, going about 35 in a 45. So when it opened up to six lanes, I zoomed around him. He then proceeded to display his assinine attitude and sped up to tailgate me. I wouldn't have that, so I zoomed up to about 60 and left him behind me. At the next light he (or so I thought) came right up on my rear bumper. So I jack-rabbit started and got up to about 55 again. It was then that I noticed, illuminated from the headlights in the distance behind me, a glint of blue plastic above the vehicle in my rear-view mirror ...

'Twasn't the truck anymore but a county COP!!! YIKES!!!

I got real respectable real quick and he decided to zoom around me and go search for other prey. Whew!!!

I HATE it when they do that!!!

What are you worried about? You just bat your eyelashes, drop a name and get off anyway!

I'm surprised you don't just drive like Vocus all the time since you'd never get in trouble.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Ray: I resent that! :) I have friends in my car club who are county and state cops anyway, so it's all good. So I usually get off when I do get stopped (which I have not in the VW yet).

Meade: How do you NOT know there is a cop behind you? I always look in my rearview mirror to check. I even know what the front ends of the Crown Vic cop cars they use here (and some Mustangs as well), so I know when the fuzz is behind me. :)
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I was going by headlights alone, and it's hard when your rear window is misty. Gimme a break man!

  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
But now that you brought it up, maybe that's why he didn't stop me ... maybe he ran my plate through dispatch and heard my last name and called it off ...

After the ordeal you went through when you were about my age, I don't blame you for not wanting to deal with police.
  • theparallaxtheparallax Member Posts: 361
I didn't take the off my front bumper just to take a pic of the horn; it was do change the air filter on my air intake also. The bumper doesn't need to be removed to do this, but I just said what the heck! It isn't too hard actually...
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I TOLD you to SHUT UP about that thing from my past. I mean, it really wasn't my fault; the cop said I was going 15 over and I was only going 11 over! And I didn't really think that tire iron was that heavy ...

But hey, I've done my time. And I learned a lot of things, like how to respect authority, how to make license plates, and not to pick up the soap if you drop it ...

I think we slashdotted/Farked your site. I can't seem to get it to come up now. I get the background and that's it.

(chuckle) I really hate the horn on my P5. It's really weak.

found a website with actual demo sounds of horns sold for trucks and cars. the train horn one is a must play, adjust speaker level please. decibals are 150, quite loud

regarding the speedo thing: check it out on an automatic transmission, not a manual one.

meade, check it out on your pro5.

And do let me know folks.

    it's very important.

Just make sure the compressor you need to run those big air horns is rated low enough in amperage that it doesn't overload your electrical system or alternator!

situations requiring a 150 db horn:

    1. people not moving after the light turns green
    2. truck or car that cuts you off.
    3. coming up on a car that does not have its lights on even at 11 pm at night ( imagine that ? )
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I find the small car horns with their cheesy annoying high tones work just great.

Air horns without a storage tank take too long pump up and short courtesy beep is not much of an option.
