I purchased a used '99 Sienna LE earlier this year and it was equipped with a AM/FM/Cassette player but not a CD player. I would like to add a CD player and would like to a Toyota CD deck so that it will work with the steering wheel controls. I have located a Toyota single CD deck (part no. 0860100869) which fits the Sienna and seems like it would be installed in the cubbyhole underneath the radio. The best price that I can find for this item is $252 with shipping.

I have two questions. First, has anyone else purchased this unit and installed it. Is the installation difficult and does the unit come with all of the parts needed. Second is there any way that I can get a better price. I have checked ebay and done a few searches, but $252 still seems a little steep. My local dealer wants $350 including installation.

BTW My wife and I love the Sienna with its quiet ride and comfortable interior. No problems, yet

i think all sienna's take 9003 for the headlight, the only thing that changed is the reflector/lens for 2001-2002 models.

9003 is also known as H4 bulbs. on the cool blue packaging - it says 9003. you will be happy with the cool blues, excellent choice!

Joefroe, I had one installed by an auto stereo place, the Toyota unit....it looks perfectly stock, works great. Initially it had a bit of a rattle, which the installer guys fixed no problem.
(let the pros handle the install!)
It does integrate perfectly with the steering controls. BTW..my Sienna is a '99LE that I got used, with the same situation as yours!

Bought a 2002 Sienna XLE annoyed by lack of storage or shelf in front. Dealer didn't have the center console box but could get one, decide to wait and see what works for different people. Get in Van with eye glass case in hand looking for somewhere to put it or a cd, etc. Has anyone bought the toyota console box or one after market that they really like .. thanks.

try the offerings available at WalMart. The beige/tan color one matches my interior perfectly; and at under $30 its pretty hard to beat. You can screw it into the floor, but I just put some anti-skid mat onto the bottom and it stays put just fine.

I have the Toyota console in mine. Had the dealer install it on delivery. It's very handy. The 2 cupholders are removed from the seats, being replaced by two pockets. The console has 2 cupholders designed in. It has lots of room inside, very deep and wide as well. Go for it!

I also picked up one of those collapsable boxes at Costco. It's kept in the back for carrying stuff (groceries, etc.) I also had the cargo net installed on delivery. Now have no issues carrying the smaller things.

Hi everyone, has anyone tried to convert the CE bench seat to the LE captain seat?? Is this difficult at all?
  • jeproxjeprox Member Posts: 466
not only would it be difficult - it would be costly too!

captains chair have different mounting holes, etc. i dont think its a good idea to start drilling holes unless you really know what you are doing.

We have a 2002 Symphony Lunar mist. Where can I purchase color keyed mud guards, front and back. The Dealer brochures do not mention the availability of them as an accessory. I previously read that they are available in Canada ??

Are color keyed Running Boards also available ?

I have a white XLE and the silver finish was just slightly lighter than what is on the vehicle.

Does anyone know who the OEM suppliers of the oil and oil filter are for the factory ?

If not, where is the best place to buy a case of 12 Toyota filters to cover me for the first 36,000 ?

Lastly, which Toyota Repair Manual should I order to be able to do basic maintenance jobs:
RM871-U1 or RM871-U2. Can they be purchased any where else besides Toyota Publications Dept ?
  • pjksrpjksr Member Posts: 111
Oil Filters: I got a case (12) from my dealer for $45. Check your dealer's site for possible coupons, too. Or search on "Toyota parts" for internet vendors (variable prices).

Service Manual: Vol 1 is mostly diagnostics (for ECMs), along with checklists of tools needed for each repair job, and some detailed specifications. Vol 2 is, if you are to get just one, the one to get (it gives important items like torques for each job). Get it thru Toyota Publications--the cheapest place I know of (too bad no Chilton's or Haynes).

Both volumes are intended for technicians, giving no detailed explanations of things' functions. If you're just going to change your oil, don't get them. But if you want to do brake work, or you want to pop the valve cover...it's a good investment IMO.

A few days ago, someone posted the new P/N for K&N Filter for 2001 Sienna (33-2145-1). K&N's home page does corroborate, however still no listing on any dealers web pages. I guess I'm still waiting. Any suggestions?
  • jasdmwjasdmw Member Posts: 118
I posted the part number, but I guess we caught it so soon after release that they haven't filled the pipeline to the retailers yet. I have a parts store looking into it and one of the largest retailers in Canada (Canadian Tire) has a listing for it, but nether can get it, yet. Guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks or so.

    Rudy, Jasdmw;

Actually, I have one. At one point I was going to bag it as it was taking so long and I was reading mixed results on the board devoted to K&N.

But when I had a chance to fulfill the outstanding order I had since late last year, I decided to go for it and see for myself how it goes.

Anyway, I've had it for a couple of weeks now - the above part number is correct. But I've been spending my free time golfing and working the polish on my Van (Clay Bar/Zaino - looks GREAT!) and haven't had the 10 minutes to slip it in.

Hopefully this weekend - I'll start without disconnecting the battery (to reprogram the ECU) and see what happens. As I have every mileage recorded since Day 1, I should see an effect (positive or negative) on mileage within a few tanks.

If the results are poor - I'll reporgram the ECU and see. If still poor I'll probably resell on E-Bay.

Probably the efficacy of K & N varies from engine to engine - so I'll experiment and post my results.

Oh yes, I got the filter from Performance International: http://www.performanceintl.com/.

  • thewolverinethewolverine Member Posts: 111
So far from what I can see after 1 week of driving with this in my 2001:

    Slightly less MPG

Slightly more power and smoother performance under normal driving

    Throatier sound!

Improved responsiveness when accelerating hard (which I do rarely).

Of course all but item #1 are subjective judgements.

I assume as the ECU adjusts MPG will improve - if so I'll definitely plop on in my wife's 98 Sienna.
  • zman21zman21 Member Posts: 46
    Great initial info....keep us posted!
  • jasdmwjasdmw Member Posts: 118
Have had mine in for a week now as well. Agree with Wolverines comments. You hear the engine howl sooner and with the foot a little less close to the metal than with the factory filter meaning, I presume, that more air is getting sucked into the intake allowing those smooth 210 ponies to get to full gallop sooner. I don't monitor mileage, just concentrate on getting the tank full before the price jumps.
  • jeproxjeprox Member Posts: 466
how much did the filter cost and where did u buy it from? canadian tire? lordco?
did u have to do anything else, other than just drop in the filter?
i'm trying to hunt one down and put it in my van.

    thanks.
  • jasdmwjasdmw Member Posts: 118
Picked mine up at Canadian Tire last week. They had a 20% of sale on. The store did not have a listing for it on their computer system, but the parts guy called a 1-800 number (Keystone?) and had one shipped in 3 days later. It cost $65.00 and change, plus tax of course.
  • jeproxjeprox Member Posts: 466
    thanks.

    i'll give it a try.

Has anyone plus sized rims on a Sienna?

I was thinking that when my Firestones need to be replaced I'd also up the rim size and add new tires. Perhaps some 215/60 16 Mich. Pilot's.

It would aid in handling, yes I know it's a van but even Chrysler offers 17 inch rims for the Caravan.
  • jeproxjeprox Member Posts: 466
just make sure your 16inch mags/tires would weigh roughly about the same as your OEM tires/rims.

i just recently switch back to my OEM steel rims from mags coz the mags actually gave me a rougher ride than the steel rims! yes, its true.

some vehicles just dont work well with aftermarket parts.

Does anyone know where to purchase vinyl mats to cover the OEM mats in a 2002 Sienna? I need to protect my carpet with a clear vinyl mat.
  • jeproxjeprox Member Posts: 466
what i did for my van is i went to home depot and bought carpet runner that were like the OEM type material and cut them to fit the entire van!

they go on top of the OEM mats and then i have rubber mats on top of the carpet runner. my van is a 1999 model and up to now, the OEM mats look brand new! i do this for all my cars and by the time i sell my car, the floor carpets and floor mats look brand new! works great also during winter time or when its raining.
  • odd1odd1 Member Posts: 227
Do you recover the cost of covering the carpet or just lose the enjoyment of the new car carpet? Do you get enough difference in resale to do this? If so, do you cover the seats to keep them pristine? Maybe you could wrap the steering wheel and radio with Saran wrap to keep them mint too. Better yet, just tell the dealer to leave all the protective shipping stuff in place.

Live a little be the one to take the newness out of your vehicles. You paid for them after all.

All kidding aside how about a K & N update. Any effects between winter and summer blend fuels?
  • jeproxjeprox Member Posts: 466
yes, i do get a higher value when i sell my car coz the interior is in great shape. yes, i do use seat covers. most of my cars, i keep close to 10 yrs. or more as i dont have the money to buy new cars every 4-5yrs! if you were in the market for a used car, i'm sure you would be looking at the condition of the interior. i choose to do this purely as a personal thing and i like to keep things clean. someone asked about protecting their mats and i reply. if you dont like my idea, tough!

i'm a car buff and therefore i protect my investment. since you mentioned it, yeah - i think will start wrapping my radio and steering wheel with saran wrap and yeah i'll leave every protective wrap from the dealer on the car too.

And my wife calls ME cheap. I too believe in getting a long life out of a vehicle but I think I'd drive my family and myself crazy being that anal. I only allow water in the cars and there is no eating in the cars.

I've decided that worrying about the interior of my Sienna to the extent of not allowing anyone to get it dirty would only lead to a short life span. Mine.

With kids, 2 large dogs, short trips, long trips and extensive back-road travel, trying to control the activity inside the van are only ingredients for more than I can handle.

We just returned from a 7 day camping (inside and outside the van) trip that included an abundance of beach sand and an overwhelming amount of forest service road mud. I have to admit I was wondering if it would ever look the same again. We pulled out the 2 middle seats for the 2 (90+ lb) dogs and threw 3 mtn bikes up on top and strapped them down to the luggage rack. All our camping gear (barely) made it in the back of the van and our 3 (pre-teen) kids sat across the back seat.

600 miles later I just finished cleaning the van and it looks exactly the way it did before we started the trip. I have to admit that I WAS very concerned if it would recover, not to mention myself. But, it did. Our next trip, will be more enjoyable knowing it cleans up so easily. I have been surprised how easily the fabric cleans on the seats. Most of the time, just water and a little scrubbing. In a seperate short trip I once spilled coffee and it came up with just water and a towel. Dog slobber and hair is just a bad memory for now, and not worth the amount of worrying that I did on the trip.

My 1998 LE had OEM cassette radio. It sounded so crapy and I was going to replace all the speakers. Incidentally, I won a bid on a JVC Kameleon CD radio 40wx4. After putting in the new JVC unit, all speakers sounded so much better that I do not think I would replace any speaker. The JVC cost me about $150 and was well worth.

I am interested in hauling a few bikes around. Undecided about rooftop carrier or hitch mount.Anyone have any comments about wind noise with rooftop hauling?
On the other hand, can anyone furnish a good hitch to install? I want the look of the Toyota hitch (hidden) without the cost.

    Thanks for your help.
  • eiasplaceeiasplace Member Posts: 1
We purchased a hitch and rack for our Sienna this spring. We ordered both items online after researching our options. Here's what we decided on:

We bought our hitch for about $125 and it's for the Toyota Sienna Van Class III. This is more weight than we needed, but our rack required the 2" receiver. Make sure you get the correct size receiver as many are less than the 2" we needed for our rack. The installation was easy and quick.

The bike rack we selected was the Thule 994 Expressway. It costs around $200-$225 for the one we ordered. It holds 4 bikes and works really well for us. Here are a few details: The bike arms fold down when not in use. Integrated cable lock secures bikes to carrier. Includes Snug-Tite lock for securing rack to receiver. Carrier tilts down for rear-of-vehicle access.

We carry canoes and water equipment on top of the van and bikes on the back and so far this has worked out great for us. If you have four bikes on the back and can't tip the rack down, it's very easy to access the back of the van from the side doors if you don't want to unload your bikes. With one bike on the rack you can carefully tip the rack down, but it's not recommended. We used to have rooftop carriers, but after driving into the garage twice with the bikes on top, we decided this was a better design for us. You also have to be careful in parking decks and drive-thrus if the bikes are on top. We are very pleased with the performance and ease of use for our racks.

Twice? Ouch :-) I "almost" got stuck in a parking garage one time with my canoe on top of my van. Luckily I stopped and eyeballed the warning sign hanging down.

Unluckily it was a Saturday morning in Toronto right after a parade on the weekend of the Eaton’s store closing and blow-out sale. Could only back out naturally and there were a "few" cars pulled in behind me, naturally :-)

Good advice on the bike rack.

I have a Saris "Bones" bike rack which straps to my van. This rack has an excellent design and quality construction, and is adjustable for many vehicles; it costs about $135 over the internet. If you don't already have a hitch, check it out. (www.sarisracks.com)

Does anyone know of a particular brand of seat cover that fits the best with the 2001 XLE cloth driver and passenger seats? Also, is it easy to take the armrests on and off the seats? I really don't want to do a lot of experimenting with my wife's car, she doesn't care for that too much.
  • davemmdavemm Member Posts: 33
Hey someone else who has a XLE without leather!
Covered my 2002 XLE with covers from www.covercraft.com.
Custom fit even for side air bags.
  • mayerofrfmayerofrf Member Posts: 33
I tried the Covercraft site and there wasn't a listing for the Sienna anywhere. Did you end up having them custom made?
  • davemmdavemm Member Posts: 33
I called them. Front side air bags had just come out for the Sienna. They mailed me the covers and I had to mark where the air bags were. Shipped them back (free shipping) thay modified and returned. They must be custom do to the fact that they fit like a glove even the arm rest.
  • mayerofrfmayerofrf Member Posts: 33
Hate to bug you with this again...

Were they resonably priced? Are the cover washable? Did you have to remove the armrest to get the cover on, or was there a hole for the armrest to slide through? Do they hook with straps under the seat?

My wife is known as the stainmaster and just trying to keep one step ahead of her. I hate trying to get Starbuck's out of a tan interior.
  • davemmdavemm Member Posts: 33
Resonably priced, that's relative. I don't remember the cost, but it wasn't cheap.

Wasable yes, they are cotton, like jeans.
You do not have to remove the arm rest. There are holes and slits that join together with velcro to ease the installation.

I have three dogs that bounce around in the van and the covers work great. I have the cover craft cotton covers in front, removed middle seats, and a heavy duty water proof cover on the rear bench for the dogs.

Thanks everybody for posting info and answers. I am waiting for a new Sienna - after driving 2
Chrysler vans for 8 years I am not scared by the engine sludge -:). But I want to keep my new van looking new as long as possible and the main problem here in Canada is winter stone chips -
they used small gravel on the road and stones flying like bullets. Undercoat and rust protection will be done by dealer, they also offered transparent 3M clear protective film glued on the hood and headlights. It looks very nice on the new and clean car, almost invisible, but I am afraid that after driving through winter salt it will eventually comes out and may damage the paint. It may be a good idea for headlights, but again if I need some acetone or paint thinner to remove it, may be problem with plastic. May be somebody have experience with that type of protection or can offer better solution. Dealer wants $ 220 Canadian for hood and 88 for headlights - looks expensive for a small piece of film.

Has anyone installed Backup light with alarm, so that anyone standing behind while backing up can hear the audible alarm?
What is the make and model of it ? From where did you get it?

    TIA

The backup alarms can be ordered directly through DesignTech.

just wondering if those of you using K&N filter have any updates to report. do u like it? continue to save gas? etc.
  • thewolverinethewolverine Member Posts: 111
Yes to both so far. 1 to 1.5 mpg improvement - more responsive to accelerate. A subtle improvement but worth it to me.
  • deepandeepan Member Posts: 342
Just around the city although hwy driving coming up the next two weekends. so far i cant definitely say that there is an improvement in fuel economy but definitely more responsive when accelerating. a friend has something called the tornado fan which he says gives him a 10-15% fuel economy improvement but no hp change.
