@ab348, you're stumping me this morning. When you "leave" text in the posting box but don't hit the Post Comment button, usually you would wind up with a new item under your Profile on the upper right that said My Drafts. Clicking that link would take you to your post and there would be an X there where you could delete the "pending" post. Or you could click on the post and continue to edit it and post the comment.

That's not working for me today so you probably won't see My Drafts either - maybe it's related to the Quoting change.

Not sure what to tell you about going to the page footers either. :( Stay tuned....

@ab348, I've had the jump to the bottom of the page scenario happen to me twice this session in the Buying discussion and in another one.. In the past when my screen scrolls or jumps around, I've just blamed it on my mouse (even though my hand is nowhere near it).

We may have to wait for @imidazol97 to figure this one out. B)

Don't forget the SANE minded people too! After hanging around here for almost 14 years, this is my favorite forum to come to because every thread does NOT end up where every "discussion" on the net seems to. (OK, the Domestics vs Imports discussion got close) ;)

Something changed in the spacing of the left window. But the colors of the text, blue and gray, both
seem to be more pale thant before. For me, it's too pale to read easily.

Was the text all blue earlier. I don't have a page copied of what it
used to look like--never expected a change.

I've noticed a format change. Seeing more discussions on the screen. An improvement, IMO.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Yeah, there was a layout change circulated last week to clean some pages up but I didn't know it was going to get implemented right away (I tend to space that stuff out anyway). It must be more obvious to those of you who use the Bookmarks - I use the Recent Discussions button mostly and didn't even notice any changes. :o

Part of my problem is that I'm always switching between Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, and IE 11, Edge and Chrome, with a dash of Safari on an iPad thrown in.

    This is Tuesday, right?

Nope, and it's not Belgium, either...

I haven't looked at this on my iPad yet. Formatting on my iPhone with Safari hasn't changed.

One difference - none of the thumbnail photos identifying the posters appear now on the listing.

Couple of hiccups this afternoon/evening. Looks like Vanilla may have a networking hardware failure somewhere at the server farm.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,262
One thing that drives me nuts about the Vanilla software that has never been addressed is its behavior when you click on a forum name to take you to the first unread post. If that post is any one of the 2 or 3 last posts on a page, it doesn't take you there, but instead to the footer that is at the bottom of each page. You have to scroll back up to find the last unread thing. Makes me crazy.

The latest revision is idiotic. The Forums menu doesn't allow jumping to a discussion's last page. It gives us that opportunity only after we've gone to the discussion's first page. More clicks, more bother, more irritation.
  • danfrommdanfromm Member Posts: 21
And there's another one. The date of last post in the Safety forum's opening page seems to be frozen. Dumb dumb dumb and a nuisance.

If Edmunds wants to get rid of the forums, fine. If not, don't make them harder to use.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,262
I am experiencing significant slowness in the Forums the last few days.

I timed the interval from clicking a link to actually seeing what I was looking to see, and it seems to average between 10 and 15 seconds. This can be either clinking the name of a bookmark or clicking the next page number in a forum discussion. The screen will cycle through "Connecting to forums.edmunds.com" to Waiting for..." to "Transferring data from...". Sometimes there are other "Waiting for" legends from Google analytics or Vanilla forums analytics.

I am not running on a dial-up connection (I have cable net access) so I am wondering if this is a network issue for me only or if others are also experiencing these lags?

I haven't run into any issues over the last few days, but that doesn't mean you haven't. Could be some slowdown in the path that your connection follows to Edmunds. But it's a good thing to take note of these things just in case it's a sign of a potential issue.

Any factors like time of day, etc. that might be clues, or has it been fairly consistent?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I haven't experienced this either, and I've been on pretty regularly throughout the last few days. About the only "glitch" I've seen is occasionally I'll get weird formatting on the page.
  • cdnpinheadcdnpinhead Member Posts: 5,617
I've noticed this myself and wrote it off to advertising or other scripts taking time to download and display. Definitely slows things down.

I've experienced a major CPU drain, 100% activity on my 4 cpu machine. Disabling Flash and Java seemed to help. Seemed to start happening with the new high-density ads...
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
Sometimes I can see that I'm waiting for some ad server to fill in a blank. And that's everywhere on the web, not just here. I know my newer laptop handles things much faster than my old one.

Ads, in general, are seriously getting out of control. I know y'all need your revenues, but I will just say that if it wasn't for blocker programs that allow me to selectively allow advertising through (well, that and the excellent people who frequent the forums), I would not visit this site any longer.

For a time recently, these programs did not work with my browser, so I just stopped visiting. The ads really (really) are that bad. It's not just Edmunds, but please don't jump on the bandwagon because the tune they're playing? It sucks.

I think it's been that way for a while now. Although to be honest, I've gotten pretty good at ignoring ads everywhere online B)

I'm running Firefox with AdBlock Plus so I don't see the ads, just the gaps where they should be. I was wondering if that was causing my slow response.

Same here. I don't notice any unusual delays. The load time is generally good, save for the initial load to the site, which can occasionally take upwards of thirty seconds for anything to display.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but could not find anything better.

Is the "Build and Price" button disappearing from the Pricing tab of the Car Research here on Edmunds? It is / was a very useful feature, I would hate to see it go.

There has been some tweaking going on - there's a push on to simplify finding prices. Usually you can find the link on the left side bar Under the Build Your Car section (see screenshot below). Sometimes it shows up in a smaller link midpage though (I think that's a result of some A/B testing).

Some people find it easier to go to the New Cars tab and then pick the make and model and then the Build and Price tab will show up under the More tab.

I think the site is a little wonkier than it used to be. But that is happening to many sites - bloatware. Websites have to pay the bills too I suppose.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Yeah, there's a big push on to improve navigation and load times. Will take a while though.

Thank you for the explanation, stever.

Removing consistency where it once existed does not seem like a positive thing, but I am looking forward to the site's improvement.

Vanilla also rolled in a bunch of bug fixes a couple of days ago (the best being able to go back in your browser from Recent Discussions and having the list automatically refresh).

It's apparent that the hardcore people who continue to endure the abuse here will hang on, no matter what.

That said, I've gotten to the point where I click on the site and go away for 2 - 20 minutes to do other things before coming back to see if the damn thing has finished loading yet.

I guess the message is that, since most living and breathing people interested in cars have moved on to Facebook or wherever, those of use who remain should be bludgeoned until they leave as well.

I'm not seeing that problem. Usually takes less than a minute for the forum site to load, and I bounce around dozens of discussions regularly, none of which take that long to load each page.

And, my wife and daughter complain that the Wi-Fi in our house is too slow!

Interesting. I access Edmunds remotely from many locations with varying upload/download capabilites, but when I'm at work it's about as good as it gets. Still takes many times longer to have the spinning dizzy stop so that I can read the page. Other sites load in less time than it takes the screen to refresh.

    Just me, I guess.
