ryanbab, now THAT is a work truck! Mine sure looks better than that! My bed is pretty chewed up, but not that bad! BTW, what color is Carmine??

blair223, I ended up going with the CC afterall. Just liked the extra space and the strength of the vertical support in the case of side impact.

    However...

Dealer found only two Chev 2500HD, LS, LWB, 4x4, 8.1L, 4.10, 6 spd manual within a 400 mile radius. One was EXACTLY what I want in pewter/graphite except it doesn't have the trailer package. Dealer was willing to sell me the hitch and parts at cost if I installed them! (Vehicle at invoice + $500 + cost of trading vehicles(like gas, driver pay, etc.)). But the other dealer is unwilling to trade at this point... AND if they do trade, wants the trade vehicle trailered out there! It's looking grim... The other 8.1L is summit white (I'd look like a city government worker...) and has roof marker lights which I can't stand... Allisons are everywhere, but I can't get a manual... And in 2002, they won't even fit the 8.1L with a manual anymore. ugh... I even had him look up GMCs to see. Zilch... May have to go to the 6.0L, but I was sooooo looking forward to that power!!!!!

Thanks for all the information. I don't qualify as I only get the supplier deal. Besides, I've got a HD now with the 6.0, and the only thing I'd trade up for would be the Duramax. I figured the HD were excluded, as they can get list for them right now anyway. Thanks again, and enjoy that new truck, you got a great deal!

    headliner to look..Mr. dealer doesn't

The tonneau cover is a Oddesy by Le Bra. She
got it from K-Mart $159. Comes with 6 clamps
to hold the frame down. Had it installed in
30 minutes. The bed liner don"t have a clue.
It's a under the rail kind. But couldn"t put
it in cuz i need to cut off the lip in the
front as it goes over the edge of the bed
and interferes (spl) with the cover. Will
take care of that today..She got it at Farm &
Country store for $189.....Good Girl !!!!

o1 2500 LD 3.73. On the way up to the Bay.
10 mpg...On the way home with tonneau installed
15 mpg. As i filled it up when i got on the
highway and when i got off each way. 60 mph
each way with AC on. My dad hauled the John
Deere with his S-10 4 cyl so i could check
    the mpg. My 97 X-cab would give 19 mpg...Geo

I'm just curious as to how much the 2500HD gas mileage is on average in city and hwy and what kind of driving habit, respectively.

Also, anyone have any idea which one has a higher ground clearance, 2500HD or a 1500Z71? and what's the tallest tire that would fit on a 1500Z71 and a 2500HD?

    Thanks

largest tire for both is 285/75/R16

I have the 285's on my truck

a 285 is too large for the narrow 2500 wheel. Someone here has done it....but I would bet the wear pattern would not be good for the long term as the sidewall bulge would be too extreme. Taller tires that are not as wide can be done though...

A 1500 Z71 would have more ground clearance...being the 2500 differential is so huge and sticks down....but overall clearance based on body height would be the 2500 coming on top.

MPG....it's all over depending on who you talk to...as high as 14 with a 6.0/4:10....all the way down to 9 with an 8.1.

Average with an 8.1 seems to be about 12.

    Good Luck

I have the 2500HD Crew Cab, 4X4, SB with the 6.0, automatic and 4.10. With close to 5000 miles the MPGs are still all over the place. Last tank was 13.9 but the tank before was 11.3. Average seems to be creeping up into the 13's. I have added dual exhausts and a K&N air filter but I think running the A/C is going to negate any gains there. Does anybody have an opinion as to whether or not adding a bed cover like a pace edwards or roll n lock will help the mileage?
  • Options
    obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
not enough mileage increase to notice or justify buying the bed cover. Practically speaking, there are many pluses to having a cover. Unfortunately, increase in gas mileage is not one of 'em.

crap. That's not the answer that "she who balances the checkbook" is gonna go for. Guess I'll have to approach it from another angle. Unfortunately 'it'll keep my golf clubs dry' ain't gonna work either because she has an answer for that too.

    I have a 2001 x-cab 4x4 6.0 3.73.
On a hiway trip last week (before wheel fell off )
On the way up i got 10 mpg. On the way home with
tonneau cover installed i got 15 mpg. 60 mph
each way with AC on and UNloaded. The tonneau
came from K-mart $159..The ball and chain bought
    it for me.
You bet a tonneau will increase MPG !!!!!!!...Geo

'01 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 EC SB 6.0/4.10 Auto w/ locker. Went canoeing in southern Missouri this last weekend. Couldn't believe my mileage when I filled up on the way home. 311 miles, 21.0 gallon (14.8 mpg). This was primarily all highway with the cruise on between 75-82 mph, although we did have to pass a few cars on a two-lane stretch of road. I figured it'd probably be around 13 - 13.5 because I topped it off pretty good when I filled up and its just too darn hard to keep your foot out of it when you get a little chance (since the wife was along). I was pleasantly surprised. I had heard that the 4.10 dropped off in mpg when you drive over 70, but it didn't really seem to hurt. 1736 miles on truck now averaging 13.3.

BTW, I'm running 50 psi front and back (stock Firestone 245's). Recommends 55 psi front and 80 psi back. Anybody else running the recommended pressure all the time or just when towing? Biggest thing that I've towed is the bass boat so I haven't changed pressure from 50 psi since I took delivery (dealer had 38 psi in each tire).

Had the Line-X liner for about two weeks now. It seems to be pretty tough though time will tell (although its supposed to have a lifetime guarantee). So far, I would certainly recommend it. I paid $439 for over-the-rail.

FOR SF0383: How's the K&N and what kind of muffler did you put on?

appearance wise when looking at the truck...the 255/85R16 IS larger than the 285/75R16. I would think that it also means that it IS a larger tire.

It's a little early to tell on the K&N. I replaced the stock filter with the K&N drop in a week and a half ago. The first full tank I ran after installing was 13.9mpg mixed highway and around town. I'm hoping to see the average mpgs get up in the 14's right now I'm averaging in the 13's at 5300 miles. The mufflers I am running now are turbokings from a local Midas shop. I like them much better than the Flowmaster 40's I originally had installed. I would have preferred to have the 70's but no one around me had any in stock and I was in an absolute panic to get the 40's off.

Got my eye on a new 2500 HD on the lot.
Options do not include locking differential which is something I was interested in. Is this a big deal not having in this type of truck? When is it nice to have?

Also what is the Electronic Shift transfer case?
    For 4HI 4LOW?

Why did Chevy decide to not have autotrac on the HD models?
    Thanks for the help,

electronic tranfser case are the buttons on teh dash for 4WD instead of the lever on the floor....

4:10's are better for towing and get going...but less MPG....(not enough to worry about though)

as for autotrac.....who knows?...could have been an issue of that transfer case not handling the GVW if the truck was fully maxed out?

Is nice to have in situations like I encountered this weekend. Was checking out some deer stands on the back side of a hay field a LONG walk from anything. Field was wet due to recent rain and I got back in at one point and started to move. Right rear began to spin and then locker kicked in and off I went. Probably not a big deal with 4 wheel drive. But if you've ever stuck a vehicle in wet grass you know how frustrating that can be. I wouldn't say it's a 'must have' but a 'nice to have'.

With the 6.0, you can only get 4:10 rearend.

Lower numerical values better for economy, higher values better power (within reason).

    Hello all
Well they put the wheel back on my o1 chevy.
Good thing the gave me a car to drive.
Seen a couple of complaints on the NHTSA web
site but it doesn't say where they were made.
I hope this not a sign of things to come.......
Had a problem on a vibration at 42-46 mph.
They took it inside and swapped the wheels off
another truck on the lot..VIBRATION GONE !!!!!
tHEY HAD IT DONE IN 20 minutes. Been getting
15 mpg hiway unloaded with tonneau cover on.
Sure ain't the 19 mpg my 97 got. But i expected
that anyway. Still haven"t found the wires for
the aux. roof light..Hate to pull the headliner
    to look...Dealer clueless...............Geo

Live in snow country, travel for snowmobiling quite a bit. Want an extra set of wheels for my 2500HD. Want stockers: painted, chromed or AL are fine. Gonna mount up some LT235-85-16 studded snows.

    Let me know via email.
