Anybody know if Chevy has a License plate holder for the front bumper on a 2001 2500HD? If so, what's the part number?

Well all the good & BAD posts didn't keep me from buying a new 2001 2500HD Ext.Cab LS 4x4 SB tow & snow packages,locker.ect. I just love this truck I've owned 8- 4x4's trucks in 28 yrs. of driving 1-Dodge,2-Fords,5-Chevys. I test drove all the 3/4 ton trucks I could find, Chevy won hands down!No problems at all but it is just 5 days old 200 miles,I realy don't think I'll have any major ones. I bought a new 2000 Tahoe LS 4x4 NEW BODY STYLE 16 months ago & only two small problems so far. Got a great price on my New rig sticker was $34,245.00 paid only $26,990.00 plus tax. Test drove the dealer's demo (same truck) STOMPED HARD on it & smoked both tires for 100 yards till I left off the gas, salesmen about pissed himself. Only thing I need is to put on a new snowplow. Does anyone have 3/4 ton 8-lug crome rim for sale. Thanks Brent

I live about 5 min. from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in North Canton,Ohio. I've snowplowed for the last 27 years with Myers & Western, I can install a unit in about 4.5 hrs & save about $350.00. Brent

Forgive me if this has been covered. We are thinking about getting a GMC 2500 HD 4x4 Crew, and it comes with the standard 245/75-16 Firestone tires. On our Yukon XL we got rid of the Firestones and put BF Goodrich long trails on it and loved them. We basically totaled the Yukon, (no one hurt) and getting this pickup. What size of tires does anyone recommend? I know about recalabriting the speedo. We do plan on getting a 5th wheel sometime in the future, so How big can I go without causing problems? 285/70-16 or 265/70-16. Thanks, Carl
  • sf0383sf0383 Member Posts: 204
I have not changed the 245's on my 2001 2500HD Crew Cab yet but have been told that 285's will fit. I have also noticed here that some are saying the front air dam may have to be trimmed to allow for larger tires.
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
First: 265/75 or 285/70 will both fit (approx same diameter with the 285/70's being a wider tire), but a wider than factory rim is recommended.

The downside of going with the larger tires is a decrease in classification. Most of the larger tires are load range "C", but there are some load range "D" and even a few in a load range "E". If you plan on 5th wheeling in the future, don't get anything less than a "D" rating (or keep factory rims/tires & swap). The same goes for the rims, many of the alloy rims will also decrease your payload capability. Look for forged aluminum or steel instead of alloy.

    Hope this helps.

My question is about the Vortec 6000 and the Vortec 8100. I am interested in a GMC and getting the 8100 for power. All that I seem to be able to find out is that most people get the Vortec 6000. Why? Is it, because it comes standard, and the 8100 is more$$$? Or does the 8100 have some unsolved problems? Or is it because they are new units and haven't had time on the road? I currently own a Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 with 360. Love the truck, but have a new addition to the family and not enough seating. Looking to get something with 4 doors in the pickup line. Any info on these two power plants would be helpfull............Thanks

    John:
Many have purchased the 6.0 for multiple reasons: mileage, price, availability (8.1 was scarce in my area for the first year) and most felt they didn't need it.

With GMC, the motor is an additional $850 and the Allison transmission another additional $1200. So for $2050, do you feel the need for the 496?

Your best bet is to test drive both, and base it upon your needs and desires. After test driving both, there wasn't any questions for me, just how soon I could get the 8.1 with the options I wanted.

As for issues, the 6.0 seems to be a more problematic motor. Both have been noted to have the start-up knock, but the 6.0 has been reported to have piston slap & pinging issues.

Which octane are you running in the 6. liter engines? I will be getting a 2002 this week and was just wondering. Thanks, Tom
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    manuals suggests 87
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
Nothing but 87 octane. No ping, hesitation, or other drivability problems. Even pulling 8K worth of trailer
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Got some light ping on 87, down low, while lugging in the 1500rpm to 2000rpm while driving around the hometown @ 7,000' elevation.
I run premium while towing, and am running mid-grade around town.

Prefer not to hear light ping.....
  • ruddsterruddster Member Posts: 19
    John,

In addition to the items mentioned by Eric, rear differential & transmission offerings between the engines are also important. The only option with the 6.0 is 4.10's, which are great for towing, but hurt economy. The 8.1 is available with both 4.10 & 3.73 gear ratios. I have a 2001 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 CC with 8.1 ,Allison, 3.73 gears. My mileage has been 12-14. A co-worker has the same truck but with the 6.0 liter & 4.10 gears. He got 13mpg on a 1000 mile trip to Montana. So, mileage is about the same. Also, the allison 5-sp automatic is only available with the 8.1.
My final engine decision was based on less reported problems with the 8.1, more available power, & better transmission.

The manual says 87 octane, and I never hear any pinging with 87, but I get more power and better mileage with 91 octane.

When pulling up mountain grades with my camper onboard (7450lbs total) I can pull grades in high gear that need a downshift with 87 octane. The mileage goes up about 10% with 91 octane (~14 vs ~15.5mpg).

10% better mileage won't pay for premium, but I buy anyway for the power increase.

I believe the truck's computer reduced the advance to stop pinging (before I can hear it) and the reduced advance causes the loss in power and economy. 9.4 compression is too high for 87 octane and only the reduced advance lets it run without pinging.

I am jealous, I have the same setup (if you have sb) but I only get 9 mpg, unless it is on the highway. I also have a tonneau, and I am running the stock AT's. I take it easy, and don't abuse it either.

What is the difference in cost of maintenance also? My understanding is the routine oil changes, etc. cost much more with diesels and push the breakeven point much further out.

Not to mention the fact that many of the 6.0 owners report 15-18 and 8.1 owners report 12+. I only have one diesel owning friend, and he gets 15-16 with his 2000 Ford Powersmoke. At that rate payback will never happen.

I'm getting 23 mpg with my Duramax. Oil changes are more, but only by the extra 4 quarts. A new fuel filter every 15,000, very accessible, easy to do owner service. What other maintenance? Things can go wrong on gas or diesel. Might cost more to repair on diesel, but then too you are covered with 100K warranty.

My feeling is, may take 100K miles to break even on intial cost, but you got a warranty during that time, and superior range and towing abilities. (More than 700 miles on tankfull)

So just sell it when you reach 100K miles. Your engine premium is paid off by the fuel savings. You've been covered under warranty the whole time. And you don't have to get a dime more for it at trade time, but you probably will.

    Hi All,

I was considering getting some Nerf Bars for my 2000 2500EC SB, and was wondering if anyone has experience with these? I know there are Signature Series and Platinum Series. I am interested in the Chrome plate, regardless of the series. Is there a need for the Stainless steel (Platinum) when it is chrome plated? How about mounting and sturdiness? Good places to buy online, price I should pay? Any and all info appreciated!

    Thanks!

i purchased my platinum series on the net for $369.00 includes shipping and no tax. i'am at work now and don't have access to the phone #, but i will post it for you tommorrow.

I just purchased a set of Westin chrom plated stainless steel nerf bars from summit racing...cost, $371 delivered to my door for a 2001 2500HD EC
The mounting was far better than the Go Rhino nerfs I had on my 97 half ton. The Westin mounts to the body mount like the others, but then also has another bracket that goes from the main bracket to the frame to make it a stout fit..

FEY-26-1940 is the part number for the Platinum Series Wesitn nerf bars for the 2001 2500HD extended cab from summit racing.
    Hope this helps...

Just returned from a 1600 mile trip ( LAX to SLC via interstate 15, R/T ) with my new 2002 2500HD ext cab sb 4x4 8.1,Alli, 3.73 truck. At 62mph 1800 rpm northbound 14.25 to 14.65 mpg; ( 600 miles)southbound 62mph, 1800 rpm 14.65 to 15.10 mpg. On one segment @ 70-75mph between St. George Ut. and Las Vegas 11.9 mpg. In town 10.5 to 11.2mpg. total miles on truck now = 2600, and no major complaints yet. One question what is other 8.1 hot idle oil pressure, (in gear)? My truck registers 20psi----seems low. SIR COL
  • caveman3caveman3 Member Posts: 14
Bought 01 2500 hd duramax with allison 2 wks. ago and averaged 18.4 mpg ,with 800 miles on the clock . should get better as it breaks in . love the truck and 5year 100000 mile warranty on engine and drive train . at 55 mph and above ,it really smoothes out. it was just as quiet as my 2k with 6.0. Was told to put 2000 miles on it before towing a 5th wheel. may notice some diesel noise at that time. from 0 to 55 you know its a diesel , but a lot quieter than the power stroke or cummings

My hot idle oil pressure on my 8.1L is one notch above 20 psi so about 22-23 psi I guess??

I have an '01 Chevy 2500HD LS EC SB 4X4 6.0/4.10 Auto. I now have a little over 7,500 miles on the truck. Just changed oil for the third time and rotated the tires. I have not had a single problem with this truck so far. No shudder/vibration, no hesitation, no knocking, just pure Chevy power (and I'm an old Ford guy). I do not use synthetic oil and have driven the truck pretty hard from day 1. I have averaged 13.2 mpg for the life of the truck (delivered 4/19/01). Hopefully, this will continue for several hundred thousand more miles. My previous two trucks were Ford 1/2 tons (both trucks had well over 200,000 miles on them when sold). Test drove the Ford 3/4 ton and the Chevy 3/4 ton. There was no comparison. I have installed a LINE-X bedliner (definitely recommend this liner to anyone). I plan on putting 16"x8" wheels and 285/75/16 mudders on as soon as I can convince the wife that it really does need new tires/wheels. My only complaints with this truck is the placement of the oil drain plug (empties all over the left side crossover pipe) and the 100 mph limiter (mine actually shuts down at about 97 mph). I did pick up a good trick from townhall for changing the oil. I tape a piece of aluminum foil over the crossover pipe - works great! I also picked up a pretty good trick from a buddy of mine so you don't make a big mess changing the oil filter (which is also an GM engineering snafu on placement). I poke a hole in the bottom of the filter with an ice pick (make sure you buy your own and don't use the one from the kitchen) and let the oil drain out before removing - this also works great! This is my first truck with an automatic transmission and may be the last. The automatic just can't figure out which gear my foot wants to be in - didn't have that problem with a stick. But, it is nice for backing the boat into the garage. Sorry for being so long-winded. God Bless to all!!!

I just put a set of BF 255/85/16 mud terrain on my 01 GMC crew 4x4 s/b w/6.0 and 4.10 gears. The tires fit the 6.5 wide stock alum wheels great. I did crank the torsion bars up 5 turns and got an inch of height out of the independent, this leveled out the truck, (don't forget to have it aligned)I didn't have to trim the airdam at all on mine but the tires will rub the inner fender on the driver side at a hard left until you tie back the emergency cable with a zip tie and screw the plastic inner fender to the steel inner fender with a couple of sheet metal screws. problem solved= 10 minutes of work. The 255's measure 33.3" advertised height, actual is about 33.0 this is slightly taller than the 285/75/16 but is narrower. These BF's are "d" rated(8 ply) and have a max load rating of 3000lbs. at 65psi. while the stock firestones (E- rated 10 ply) have a rating of 3042 at 80 psi. These BF's would surpass the rating on the firestone if at an equal psi of 80. The M/T will make a little road noise if thats a concern to you. I usually have a cd in the player so it doesn't matter. If you have 4.10 gears the tire height will drop it to around a 3.77 and will drop your rpm by about 250-300 rpm at 60 mph. I just pulled a 2500 # 18ft. landscape trailer loaded with 4 quads (1800#),and about 1000# of misc. parts, riding gear, gas cans, suitcases, 4 guys in the cab, etc.....( the truck sat level w/trlr.)up the grade from IL. to Mich. at 75-80 mph in the left lane and it had all the power it needed going up the hills and pulled great. The mileage was only 9.8 but what would you expect. My truck has 6000 miles now and the avg. is about mid 12 mpg. With this tire/gear combo it should pull your 5th wheel without a problem. Good Luck.

They don't have Steeltex in that size.....as these 'Stones have been the best wearing tires I have ever had....period.....

    Traction is excellent as well...

Guy over on PUTC has 255/85's dunlops on his HD CC and they look real nice. He really likes the tires too
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
go to Tirerack.com...search that size....it comes up with 5 choices....all but the first one are nice...

BFG's will be too noisey for as much highway as I do.....and no...I don't always want the radio loud to compensate...haha

    they look good though

I gave $178 a piece with mount and balance for my BF 255's. The tires run around 155.00 ea. and mount & balance is $12 a tire so the dealer made about $45 on the set plus the alignment at $40.

mgdvhman where are you in Michigan? I was just up at Silver Lake Sand Dunes with my buddys last week while on vacation doing some riding on the ole 250R's. What an awesome place to ride. Loved the 150-200 ft. Dunes! The heated seats felt pretty good while enjoying the upper 40's a week ago on Sun. and Mon. while there. Maybe next time I'm up you can see the truck and order up some better weather while I'm there.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...like on the "thumb" side...(base of thumb)....about almost an hour North of Downtown Detroit...

We are getting a fall heat wave now......67-82 days....but the cold stuff is coming back real soon...

I agree.....heated seats and 2 posistion memory are one of the best options!
