The downside of going with the larger tires is a decrease in classification. Most of the larger tires are load range "C", but there are some load range "D" and even a few in a load range "E". If you plan on 5th wheeling in the future, don't get anything less than a "D" rating (or keep factory rims/tires & swap). The same goes for the rims, many of the alloy rims will also decrease your payload capability. Look for forged aluminum or steel instead of alloy.
Hope this helps.

Many have purchased the 6.0 for multiple reasons: mileage, price, availability (8.1 was scarce in my area for the first year) and most felt they didn't need it.
With GMC, the motor is an additional $850 and the Allison transmission another additional $1200. So for $2050, do you feel the need for the 496?
Your best bet is to test drive both, and base it upon your needs and desires. After test driving both, there wasn't any questions for me, just how soon I could get the 8.1 with the options I wanted.
As for issues, the 6.0 seems to be a more problematic motor. Both have been noted to have the start-up knock, but the 6.0 has been reported to have piston slap & pinging issues.

I run premium while towing, and am running mid-grade around town.
Prefer not to hear light ping.....
In addition to the items mentioned by Eric, rear differential & transmission offerings between the engines are also important. The only option with the 6.0 is 4.10's, which are great for towing, but hurt economy. The 8.1 is available with both 4.10 & 3.73 gear ratios. I have a 2001 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 CC with 8.1 ,Allison, 3.73 gears. My mileage has been 12-14. A co-worker has the same truck but with the 6.0 liter & 4.10 gears. He got 13mpg on a 1000 mile trip to Montana. So, mileage is about the same. Also, the allison 5-sp automatic is only available with the 8.1.
My final engine decision was based on less reported problems with the 8.1, more available power, & better transmission.

When pulling up mountain grades with my camper onboard (7450lbs total) I can pull grades in high gear that need a downshift with 87 octane. The mileage goes up about 10% with 91 octane (~14 vs ~15.5mpg).
10% better mileage won't pay for premium, but I buy anyway for the power increase.
I believe the truck's computer reduced the advance to stop pinging (before I can hear it) and the reduced advance causes the loss in power and economy. 9.4 compression is too high for 87 octane and only the reduced advance lets it run without pinging.

4k miles with tonneau unloaded.
10 mpg new..Slight pinging on reg. gas
depending on brand (don't bother me )
Minor cold start rattle ( 97 350 did it
too ). Otherwise great truck.......Geo
Not to mention the fact that many of the 6.0 owners report 15-18 and 8.1 owners report 12+. I only have one diesel owning friend, and he gets 15-16 with his 2000 Ford Powersmoke. At that rate payback will never happen.

My feeling is, may take 100K miles to break even on intial cost, but you got a warranty during that time, and superior range and towing abilities. (More than 700 miles on tankfull)
So just sell it when you reach 100K miles. Your engine premium is paid off by the fuel savings. You've been covered under warranty the whole time. And you don't have to get a dime more for it at trade time, but you probably will.
I was considering getting some Nerf Bars for my 2000 2500EC SB, and was wondering if anyone has experience with these? I know there are Signature Series and Platinum Series. I am interested in the Chrome plate, regardless of the series. Is there a need for the Stainless steel (Platinum) when it is chrome plated? How about mounting and sturdiness? Good places to buy online, price I should pay? Any and all info appreciated!
Thanks!
chris
The mounting was far better than the Go Rhino nerfs I had on my 97 half ton. The Westin mounts to the body mount like the others, but then also has another bracket that goes from the main bracket to the frame to make it a stout fit..
FEY-26-1940 is the part number for the Platinum Series Wesitn nerf bars for the 2001 2500HD extended cab from summit racing.
Hope this helps...
