Did we get our posts deleted the other day, yours and mine. I looked back later and they were gone. Still trying to figure out why? RYANS site was posted by Z71 Mike up above.

My CD player on both the 99 and 2000 get pretty hot on the face plate. So has many friends trucks that I have been in. There seems to be a fan behind there that kicks on too.

Ok Rick, lets see how much you really know about your Silverado:

How many Zirks does your truck have, how often should they be maintained, how do you maintain them, and what are they there for?

Good luck with this one now.
  • rdavenport1rdavenport1 Member Posts: 14
is a 2wd. therefore it has 7 Zerks (not zIrk) there are 4 that take care of the ball joints and 2 that take care of the tie rod joints and 1 that takes care of the joint where the two driveshafts meet which is between the tranny and dif. for service i grease them at the same time i change oil and i'm very careful not to overfill and rupture the rubber sack that contains the grease on the steering components. on the driveshaft joints i have been greasing this area at every other oil change. i use mobil 1 grease as i have confidence in the synthetic lubricating properties of this product.

Pocahantas has the connections to get you expelled from school if you write things on the blackboard about her.

every so often, where, so often happens to be now. And what is life without risk? Expelled? One often needs to evaluate one's own importance from time to time as to decide on that one. I noticed all the hosts who have left edmunds for one reason or another....don't post here anymore. Ever wondered why?

Hint: it doesn't take a genius to figure this one now....

is that rick hasn't to my knowledge, caused any problems, but it's more like some of the old regulars are treating him with resentment because he comes on and tries to help people. what i would like to see here is the elimination of attacks on our host. she seems to keep this topic within the guidelines, but then someone says the wrong thing and naturally their post gets terminated. then the offending individual replies in this foul way which i find not only offensive but disrupting as well. whilst i usually never allow myself to enter in a conflict, i will say this, joelis i find your response towards pocahontas a threat and is totally uncalled for.
    thank you i'm through.

You guys floor me! Please give me some truck info with the ongoing personal back and forth. Hey, If you want to do one thing that will add a bit of detail to your Silverado wash - Take a brillo pad and polish your exhaust pipe! Unless you are young and energetic, you may want to only polish the part that you can see.

If you used Zaino....the truck would be a piece of cake to keep clean...of course it all depends on where you live...

I can Zaino my xcab in about 20 minutes from applying to drying and removing. Recommended drying time is an hour but things dry a little faster where I come from.

Hi all. I'm in the market for a 2001 'rado, but have some questions that I haven't found the answers to yet. Haven't even spoken to a dealer yet... when I do, I want to go in loaded for bear! Would appreciate answers thoughts on subject below.
    1. In the 40/20/40 seat, does the drink holder slide into the seat or "stow" in some other manner?
    2. Locking Differential. How does it differ from limited slip, if at all?
    3. Why would anyone order a 4WD rig without the locking differential?
    4. Anyone got the story on the sliding rear window?
    5. The plastic whale tail on the tailgate. I've seen some with, some without at the dealerships. Haven't made the correlation yet as to why some do and don't have it. Help?
    Thanks, folks.

I'll stick to what I know for sure.
    1) The drink holder on the front of my 40/20/40 doesn't store anywhere. It's fixed

    2) I got the locker but not sure what the difference is

    3) Matter of personal preference. Some claim that without the locker your 4wd drive can turn into a 2wd in certain slippery situations

    4) You can get the slider as a dealer installed option. Some have claimed that there were problems with the sliders on the '99s and '00s

    5) Mine came with the whale tail. It's the LS trim package. 2001 2500HD crew cab, 4x4

Need to clarify my question on the locking differential, question #3 on post #1563.

I do a lot of duck hunting, sometimes dealing with icy boat ramps. Saw my dad's 2WD truck get stuck on a ramp this year...one rear tire on concrete, the other on ice. Wanna bet which one had the power? Dad just bought a 4WD 'rado, and dealer said he didn't need the locker. Doesn't compute to me.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
    1. If you have an automatic trans, the drink holders are in the dash and retract when not in use. If you have a manual trans, the holders are mounted on the floor and do not move.

    2. A limited slip differential always has some torque applied to both wheels. It takes a certain amount of power to get one wheel to turn faster than the other. You can jack up one wheel, but it won't turn freely.
A locker functions like an open rear end, one wheel is free to turn until the differential locks, then they are fixed together, short of breaking parts one wheel will not turn a different speed than the other. Jack up one wheel and it will rotate freely, unless you can turn it fast enough to cause it to lock.

    3. Beats me. You'll have to ask Tim about that one. I have the locker on both my 4wd trucks

    4. You used to be able to order a sliding rear window in 99. They had so many problems they dropped it as an option. It was not available when I ordered my 00. Don't know about 01's. Just go a get a CR Laurence slider, it's a better window anyway.

    5. The whale tail is standard on 1500 LS and LT trucks. sf0383 has is on 2500HDs also. It is not on Base models or 2500's or GMCs.

All 2001 models with the 40/20/40 seat have the cupholder mounted on the front of the 20 part of the seat. The in-dash cupholder was eliminated after the 2000 model year. I personally wish my 2001 did have the indash cupholder and I plan on checking into a retrofit. As for the dealer who said you don't need a locker, I'd venture to say that he just didn't have any on the lot and wanted to make a sale. Every truck, both 2WD and 4WD, on my dealer's lot has a locker. I imagine if you wanted to buy a truck without one, he'd say you definitely need one. Just depends on what you have on the lot that counts the most. Having driven all variations, I would never order a truck without a locker. When I went to order my 2001 I was told the slider was not available due to a supplier problem. That may or may not have been resolved by now. I wanted heated mirrors and the only way to get them was to also take a rear window defroster. So it looks like I'm stuck without a slider. There would be no point for now since my SnugTop doesn't have a front slider. Hope this helps.

The dealer is an old family friend in another state, and the discussion was for a custom-ordered truck. Why he doesn't think the locker is important is beyond me. I thought if 4WD is being ordered, traction is important. Whatever.
I saw a discussion about the Z-71 pacakge a while back, but it got pretty technical. What does it give the truck besides different shocks, skid plates, air cleaner and decals? Anything?
Pricing. I know EXACTLY what the invoice is for the rig. I also know if I custom order I can play the margin for the holdback. What kinds of prices did y'all pay for dealer prep? Considering invoice includes destination, what's a good price relative to that? I'm thinking a ways below invoice on a custom order is reasonable. Dealer's decent...willing to custom order and then call the truck his "stock" so I can get the good GMAC rates. How hard should I push? Do your dealers also do this for you?

I had a 2K Monte Carlo with a fancy RDS radio - the manual noted that the face of the radio will get hot. I also had an Alpine with CD controller and removable face plate that got hot. But my plain FM radio on my stripper is cool as a cucumber.
Strippers have thin tails, upscale models have the fat whale tails. Some don't like the whale tails if you are installing a tonneau cover or bed cap - something to think about before you buy the pricey models.
The big in dash cup holders ended in 2K, my 2K stripper has one, but I would never use it because my monster contractor style Steel Horse console extends too far toward the dash to be able to use them (strippers don't have fold down consoles)- Steel Horse console has integrated cup holders.
I don't think I would want to reach down to the floor to get my drinks like the 2001 models have, although I rarely drink and drive.
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
If you want a fold down console, buy a Sierra. Even their stripper has one. As for the whale's tail, no Sierra has one. That's strictly a Silverado thing.
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
Its pure decoration. If you don't like it the dealer can swap it out for a standard black cap.

Maybe it improves handling & keeps the rear end planted at 90MPH + speeds - like a 911 (LOL)

At first I thought it looked strange, but now I kind of like it. I have a soft Ex-tang cover on my bed and the tail does not cause any problems.
  • willimjowillimjo Member Posts: 73
The only benefit I've determined that the "whale tail" tailgate cap gives is a convenient finger hold to raise the tailgate. It's especially nice when the tailgate cap is wet, your fingers won't slip off.

I've missed this one some where along the line.

All I've noticed is the black plastic strip on top of the tail gate.

    Have HD LT coming.

    Thanks

  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
That black plastic strip on the tail gate is the whale tail. It is GM's idea of futuristic styling - real cutting edge, change the way people look at trucks, break new ground, leave Ford and Dodge in the dust advancements that make people run right out and buy a new truck. (Sorry for the run on sentence). I hear Toyota has been studing the success of the whale tail and is working real hard to come out with it as an option on the 2008 Tundra.

    is degenerating into nothingness.....whale tail....LMFAO!!
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
So they got rid of the in-dash fold out cupholder? I didn't know that. I have that style and I like it a lot. When I don't need it, it's out of the way. And when I do, it holds any size or shape I've tried so far. In fact it's not a bad little fold out table for stuff. But if you are unlucky enough to have received a Shakerado then you would notice the vibration more in the cup holder with the cantilivered design. Must be why they nixed it.

Really, does anyone know why they changed? Either people didn't like it or it was too expensive. It is a potential source of creaks and groans but I solved that with a little lube.

Thanks. I found his email address by searching in the board function for "blackmax". It showed the topics in which his handle appeared. Actually, another poster was looking for the Flowmaster .wav files that he sent me when I was considering purchasing a Flowmaster 70 Series muffler. Great muffler!!!, Great Sound!!

Has anybody else had their seatbelts start to make a squeeking sound? Mine started a few days ago, If I move a little in my seat with the seatbelt on, it makes a squeeking sound right where it goes into the seat. It sounds like it may be the cloth rubbing on something?

Man, I love this truck but what the hell happened to quality? This thing rattles and squeeks more than anything I've ever owned.

my truck is almost 6 mos. old and i too experienced the squeaks and rattles(more so squeaks). what i did was to clean all weather and door seals, and then i lubed them with dielectric grease and "presto" squeaks were gone. just part of upkeep i guess. for the seatbelt, i'd pull the plastic grommet that the belt goes through and shoot some silicone spray in there and that should take care of it.

  • mpalombompalombo Member Posts: 186
Thanks for the info. I thought about the silicone spray but it will get in the belt and then on my clothes. I'd rather not go into work every day smelling like silicon spray :-)

One more thing that i forgot to ask in my previous post. I know others on here have taken apart their dash to put some foam in there to stop the noise. I am going to be doing this pretty soon but I don't know where to buy the foam. If anybosy knows can they please tell me, I guess I need about 1/2 inch thick with a tape back?
  • rdavenport1rdavenport1 Member Posts: 14
or rattles? haven't had anything in this area yet, but i've read that others have. i'm pretty sure that a hardware store would have some foam material like you want.

died last night, two days before the new truck arrives. Dealer gave me a free bulb, a 3157K, so gotta install tonight.

    Looks pretty easy.

    Can't wait for new truck.

Any guesses what they'll offer trade in?

Kelly BB trade-in website says $14,000 to $15,200 depending on condition good or excellent. Edmunds says around $14,000 for trade in also.
I'm guessing dealer will offer a thou or two less.

What are your experiences with trade-ins? Had a ad in the paper for a week, no calls...
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
you're better off selling it on your own rather than trading.
  • mtrammellmtrammell Member Posts: 125
Yeah, my driver side seatbelt started squeaking at about 400 miles. Any little movement and it sounded like a mouse. The squeak was coming from the roller inside the seat right where the belt comes out next to my ear. I took it to the dealer expecting them to lube it. Instead, they replaced it (something about safety liability). Then the autolock mechanism wouldn't work properly and they replaced it again, and again... The 4th mechanism finally worked properly. I think they just put my original back in after lubing it. Now at 15K miles, the entire seat back squeaks and groans with any movement.

I should have just lubed the thing myself.
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
First off, I really prefer the 40-20-40 seats, especially clad in leather which is what I have. I really liked the Fold down cupholder on my 99 and 2000 trucks I have had. I don't seem to be too impressed with the location and functionality of the 2001 cup holders. I still wouldn't buy buckets because I don't like the arm rest location and fragility. The cup holders are great and so is the rear air though.

    Hunter
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
How would you use the armrests while driving? You're supposed to have one hand at the 10 and the other at the 2 o'clock position. That being the case, the armrests become decoration....lol!!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
follow the rules....in many cases...not only driving, I use the center console to rest my arm on. that makes the buckets perfect for me....and the armrests no longer relevant....lol again!!
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
With the seat all the way down, I would have to lean over since my elbow is about 3" from the console or something like that. I drive with the 20 section down. Elbow on the armrest, both hands on the wheel. The armrest on the buckets doesn't seem to go nearly as far forward and I was not comfortable trying to use it.

  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Outta the 90's, its the new millenia and the correct hand position are 9 and 3....

I'm with Hunter on the bench seats, but I prefer nu-leatherette....
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
I actually use 8 and 4 to be exact. Works best with one elbow on the left arm rest and the right on the center fold down console (Leather). Have the seat all the way back and all the way down. wish there was about 1-1.5 inches more track to go back farther taboot. I am about 6'4" and a big man and could use a little more farther back.

  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Ya know the one that all trucks had? Made for one handed turns....tell me ya remember....BTW, I use the wrist at 12 o'clock to steer...sort of like Tai Chi....if you know my meaning.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I have to agree about the squeaks, although in mine it's more like creaks. Plastic on plastic is the worst culprit I believe. I made a big improvement by lubing the cupholder, center armrest (40/20/40), door panels, and rear plastic trim. Luckily I don't have the seatbelt squeak, but the lumbar support does groan when I lean into it. I wish GM had done this work for me.

If starting with a 4.10 axle an goingto change to taller new tires, what tire size wuold give the equivalent effective ratio of the same truck (1500 ext. 4wd) stock tires and the 3.73 ratio? I'm looking at new in stock trucks and all I see is 3.73 's . Any drawbacks to the firm ride instead of the z71? What was the link to the tire size calculator? Thanks
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
It's all simple math. A 3.73 is about 10% taller ratio. So if you get a 4.10 rear end truck, you need a tire that has is 10% taller than the stock tire.
  • dch0300dch0300 Member Posts: 472
    This is directly from Tirerack.com

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To
convert to inches, divide by 25.4 In the example above, the width is 185mm or 7.28".

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the
example above, the tire is 7.28" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one
sidewall. In this case, 185x0.60=111mm or 7.28"x0.60=4.36".

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

To figure the outside diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2,(remember
that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the
wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.

    Example...185/60R14 85H or 185/60HR14

    185mm x .60=111mm x 2=222mm + 355.6mm(14")= 577.6mm or 22.74"

Some more good information from Tirerack.com

    - On front wheel drive cars, rotate the tires in a forward cross pattern (fig. A) or the alternative X pattern (fig. B)
    - On rear wheel or four wheel drive vehicles, rotate the tires in a rearward cross pattern (fig. C) or the alternative X pattern (fig. B)
    - If you car has directional wheels or tires, rotate them as shown in fig D.
    - If you car has non-directional tires that are a different size from front to rear, rotate them as shown in fig. E.

The 10/2 position comes from pre-airbag days and is no longer considered valid or safe. The recommended position is now 8/4. I have absolutely no problem using the center console as an armrest. I find the 40/20/40 seat extremely comfortable. I personally prefer to drive with one hand at the six position. Not really recommended, but most comfortable for me. Steering wheels with a spoke at the six drive me nuts!
