How much were the wade rail caps. Yours look real nice! I was thinking about getting the Line-X OTR but may reconsider now.

Getting ready to head to Kansas City. Adios amegos!

My wife likes her raised white letters on her SUV, I like my blackwalls on my truck. Both vehicles are black too. go figure.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
How do you cruise the boulevard without raised white letters?

    Oops. Stuck in 1978 again.

I do have RWL on my '67 Camaro, but that's the only car I would put them on. The stock rally wheels don't look good with plain blackwalls.
  • jmincherjmincher Member Posts: 65
is obviously a personal choice, it does not affect the performance of the vehicle in any way. However the debate on UTR and OTR does have functional validity.

For me I would go with the RWL out.

bco-you seem pretty knowlegable on the bed liners. If I am going with a fiberglass topper do I need to worry about rust from a drop-in liner?

Repeat: Any comments on oil additives or synthetic oil?
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
I would definitely stay away from Duralube. One of the ingredients is actually a corrosive. Slick 50 isn't as bad, but I've heard the active ingredient, PTFE, can clog up the oil filter. Mobil 1 is a great choice that has recently been reformulated and it's available everywhere, so it's the easiest choice. Other synthetics should be just as good, though. Be careful to not get the blends (such as Syntech) that are much cheaper. They may contain as little as 10 percent synthetic oil. I used Mobil 1 starting at 9k miles in my 89 and it has 111k miles on it now and it still doesn't burn any oil. My new truck will get Mobil 1 at 3000 miles, but no additives. Also, be careful with what filter you get. Fram is really bad, Mobil 1 is the best, but expensive and hard to find. The best compromise is an AC Delco PF59.

JM my old S-10 (dad is driving it now) has had a cap for 9 years with a drop in no rust whatsoever.

WADE BEDRAIL CAPS mine were $69.95

Ok i went and ordered my new tires 7-10 days (pending the weather and holidays). They are like $700. I talked to the guy about rubbing he said he has done many trucks and has had no problems. A GMC dealership is next door and he has been doing a bunch od 285 swaps on them. Only bad thing is the gmc dealership is reprogramming tires but is burning something up. So they are installing a $110 chip but i told the owner of the tire place about hypertech he was like hmmmm im calling the local autostore (van senus) and gonna try and get one. I told him to check online for the details. Its only a 3.6% change overall in speed and miles. Eventually ill get it reprogrammed. 2 wks ago the place had 8 sets of the 285s today they were at minus 4 (like the temp here).

Ill have pics soon MAYBE. My computer has gone haywire when i turn it on it go from the loadup page to the WINDOWS startup page and stays there. Wont go on its stuck. gateway wont help cause ive upgraded to windows ME. So i probably wont be online much at all fro awhile.

HAVE A NICE HOLIDAY EVERYONE!!! If your traveling have a safe trip.

I know the feeling. I've been trying to respond to xring for several days and each time I try the post punts it out into cyberspace somewhere. Today, for the first time since the new software format, I seem to be able to post ok. Hang in there.

What I do is copy my post before I hit the "Post my message" icon. That way, if something goes wrong, I can come back and paste it and post it really easy.

ryan- great pics. BTW does the g/f still let you drive the truck? (just kiddin) what's up with the tires, are the originals not working that well? also do you feel that acceleration is going to fall off a bit with the bigger tires?

What kind of gas mileage can I expect for a 2001 4WD Reg Cab with 4800 and 3.73 ?
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
It's my opinion that the engineers at GM spent a lot of time and effort determining what is the best tire size to use. Then they built the truck around the largest size. I think I'll just keep my 265s since they work really great, even though they are Wilderness ATs. $700 is a might too much for me to spend on new tires when I still have lots of tread on the originals. Just my humble opinion.
  • ckulusckulus Member Posts: 24
I have had the same experience. After typing in a longer-than-usual post about my buying experience, I posted it, only to see that it did not get on the site. I don't know what happened either.
  • ckulusckulus Member Posts: 24
I see on my Goodyear Wilderness ST's that the max p.s.i. is 44. GM recommends 35 p.s.i. I have heard that running the tires at max p.s.i. can increase gas mileage. Have any of you experimented with this. My truck is a 2001 Silverado LS Ext Cab, 2WD.

BTW, with my Lincoln Town Car I have run the max p.s.i. with no ill effects. Would the same hold true for truck tires?

    Thanks,

any tire will give better MPG at higher pressure....higher pressure - Lower rolling resistance.....lower pressure......Higher rolling resistance....aka more power to keep going...

Yea i get to drive the truck. She still hasnt driven it yet.

The original tires are alright. I wouldnt say good or bad id say average. They suck in snow and little pebbles get stuck in the treads. I also do not like how the truck looks parked. The bottom of the tire bows out mainly cause its a P tire. At least i will have a real truck tire soon. Erik actually i think i am paying close to $750 for them.

Today it was freezing cold out. Just above zero. Well i worked all day. I pulled in the driveway and to my amazement i seen an INDIGO BLUE truck in the driveway not a greyish one. My mom washed it today after she washed her blazer. I couldnt beleive it. Best xmas gift i have ever got.

    Merry XMAS Guys

How do you wash a truck in 0 degrees. If drops to
the freezing mark here exterior faucet freeze up.
    Must be well insulated
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
used hot water from inside the house. Ran a hose from laundry room out the the door to the garage.

washed the truck in the garage with hot water and a heater on

    Very easy actually

I have LTs on my old truck and they also bow out at the bottom. That's a characteristic of all radials. As for tire pressure, tires are manufactured for many applications. A max pressure rating of 44 psi is for the tire, not the truck. GM has determined that 35 psi is the best all around pressure for their pick ups. I personally would stay with 35 psi. My tires tend to last longer than the warranty period, but I check my pressure at regular intervals and maintain the proper pressure.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I have 35 psi all around on my fstones now and they are wearing horribly. The center tread is smooth already (characteristic of over inflation but thats not the case). The tires only have 9600 mls on em. Oh well i never liked these tires from the beginning and should have went with my original plan and had em changed out.

john, my wades were about $75 delivered. got 'em from performance products.

jminch, can't speak from experience as i've never had a fiberglass capper. i reckon you would have less exposure under the drop in, but even with it covered (by the cap) you still have the potential for rust if you live in a humid area, or if you drive in wet conditions a lot. bottom line, i would expect a lesser chance of rust, but i wouldn't eliminate it.

    happy holidays everyone!!!

I'm going for the ext. warranty.....matter of fact, I got it. I'm waiting on the paper work from GM.

I'm going to wait for about 6 months and then push for the new motor, unless they have a fix for the knock.
According to GM, a cure for the knocking will be out after the first of the year (yeah right!). My prediction is
there will no cure and I'll get a new motor. But, I'll give them a chance.

    Merry X-mas.....all

  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
That's good news. I would definitely work on getting a new motor. From what I understood, these are actually not new, more like rebuilt with new parts. Guess the factory can do it more efficiently and cheaper than the dealer. They would rely on the dealer to install the motor though. I agree that there is no cure other than changing the main bearings. And if done by the dealer, would actually be more cost efficient to replace motor. Unless....they add STP....LOL!!

Ryan - heated garage heated water - OK
picture was a huge ice cube

Bored today so decided to clean the truck, mid 50's
but by time finished hands felt like ice. If
build another garage (3 car full) will fix so floor
slopes so can clean/work on cars than hose out.
0 not much of a problem but would be nice on a
    105 degree day.

Didn't know if you'all were aware but there is a Silverado recall for 2000 models. Brake line on right side of truck can wear thin and leak fluid with prolonged rubbing of frame. I just heard of this myself. Hope this info helps. I'll be making an appointment next week.

    Component: BRAKES:HYDRAULIC:LINES:HOSE:NON-METALLIC
    Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
    Mfg. Campaign #: 00093
    Year: 2000
    Make: CHEVROLET TRUCK
    Model: SILVERADO
Potential Number of Units Affected: 1383922
Manufactured From: FEB 1999 To: JUN 2000
    Year of Recall: '00
    Type of Report: Vehicle
    Summary:

Vehicle Description: Light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Some of these vehicles have a clearance condition between the front
right-hand brake pipe and the body cross sill that could decrease to the point of allowing contact during the life of the vehicle. If contact occurs
and the brake pipe becomes damaged, in half of the brake system there can be a loss of brake fluid and pressure. The brake warning lamp will be
activated when the brake fluid lever reaches the indicator limit.

During braking, the pedal will be lower than normal and stopping distances will be longer. If this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash
    could occur.

Dealers will inspect the front right-hand brake pipe for wear. If there are signs of wear, this section of the brake pipe will be replaced with a new
designed brake pipe section. If there are not signs of wear on the brake pipe, the dealer will install a spacer flip to ensure sufficient clearance
between the brake pipe and the body cross sill. Owner notification is expected to begin during December 2000. Owners who take their vehicles
to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Chevrolet at
1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at
    1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

    NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 00X001000
    Component: BRAKES:HYDRAULIC:DISC:CALIPER
    Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
    Mfg. Campaign #: 00024
    Year: 2000
    Make: CHEVROLET TRUCK
    Model: SILVERADO
    Potential Number of Units Affected:
    Manufactured From: To:
    Year of Recall: '00
    Type of Report: Tire
    Summary:

This is not a safety defect in accordance with the Safety Act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency.

Vehicle Description: 1/2 ton light duty pickup trucks. On certain trucks, failure to follow the service procedure set forth in the Service Manual for
removal of the front brake caliper can result in movement of the front brake hose relative to its knuckle mounting bracket. If this movement results
in increased length between the bracket and the banjo fitting that attaches to the brake caliper, it is possible for the brake hose to come in contact
    with the wheel rim.

This contact with the wheel rim could, in time, cause the brake hose to become worn to the point that brake fluid leakage could occur. If this
occurred, loss of front brakes is possible.

Dealers will attach a notice label to the front brake hoses stating that the calipers must be supported when removed. GM has decided to conduct a
Service Program to install a label on the hose with warning and recommendations to support the brake calipers when removing them. Owners can
contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782, concerning this program.

Less than two months old and I already have a burned out fog light. These lights are truly disappointing. They are nothing but show lights. Even Ford and Dodge did better with theirs. The only reason to order them is to have the wiring and switch in place for when you get some real lights. I'm sure someone will come out with some aftermarket lights that will be a direct replacement. But for now I do need to replace the burned out bulb, but there is no bulb number in the owner's manual. Anyone have the bulb number I need? I'm not going to waste half a day at the dealer...it's just not worth it.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Performance products has an awesome set of fog lights. Its new front fascia ($100 some dollars) that has 2 circular holes. YOu have to replace the stock fascia Then you can buy the PIAA lighting kit. Its really nice.

SO far i have used mine in fog and i think they work decent.

    Ryan
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
That might be an option. I do prefer the look of the round fog lights over the stocks lights. But that will be a summer project. Any idea about what type of bulb I need to replace the stock bulb? Hopefully it's not a proprietary bulb available only at the dealer.

are any of you fellows noticing big inventories on the lots these
days?? chevy dealers around here have more trucks on lot than in any time in recent memory
  • truckdudetruckdude Member Posts: 55
Yep. In fact all the dealers seem to be overflowing the lots around here (Denver) with excess inventory. When the economy slows down, high priced vehicles get hit hard. The high gas prices probably aren't helping either. And in CO, they are expecting natural gas prices for home heating to be double what they were last year; some people just can't afford all of these expenses.

Now if you are in the market for a new truck, I think some awesome deals are on the way...
  • smikessmikes Member Posts: 130
to those of you who told me how to remove the z71 stickers and the badges. I did it in an hour. Easier than I thought. Truck looks much better, IMO. Also gave it it's first bath. Might have to buy drywall stilts to wash the whole beast! Big difference from my old Acura Integra...

Drove my Z71, 5.3, LS1500, 5K miles on truck, on a 400+ mile trip, cruise control, 70mph, 80% of trip. Got 16mpg. Is this average or below average base on your experience? Thanks!
  • xringxring Member Posts: 129
Try sending me your comments via email at: cmac@ionet.net.

Made it home from K.C. before the storm hit. The roads in OKC and the rest of Oklahoma are a mess now. The Governor even gave us state employees the day off because of the weather, but we have to charge it to our annual or sick leave - bummer : ( .

Hope you all had a nice Christmas!

    John
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I took a trip similar to yours. It was 600 miles and going i had the cruise on 75% of the time i got 16.2 mpg. Coming home less traffic had cruise on 95% of the time and i got 17.1 mpg my best to date.

BCO- took my truck in today to get the mirror looked at. I waited 2 hrs to get it looked at and guess what they told me NOTHING was wrong. Well they were right for a change. It seems the mirror "Broke" due to it being frozen and a bunch of ice up in the mirror housing. It sat in a well heated shop for about 2 hrs and dethawed. Works great now. Also they found my tailgate part and they need to paint it blue so ill get that put on later this wk.

    Hello,
I want to change the fluid in my transmission over to Amsoil synthetic. I have a 2001 Silverado LS with 5.3L engine. In looking under the truck I noticed a drain plug in the transmission pan, but is there also a drain plug for the torque convertor? If so, where is it?

    Thanks,
