I just finished a trip to Phoenix and back. Running empty from north Seattle to South Oregon I got 14.3 (65-75). North Calif to phoenix with A/C on I got 13.0. From Phoenix to Seattle (60-65MPH) with the A/C on and a U-Haul with 4,000lbs in it I got 11.7. Truck is a 2001 2500HD, 6.0, EC, SB, 4.10.

Only problem on the trip was when I got off the freeway (EVERY TIME - towing or not) the rear differential clutches (locker) would chatter for the first 3 to 4 turns and then quiet down. This is the same problem I had with a 92 Suburban. With that vehicle, I put in the GM additive and it worked fine thereafter. With the Gear oil being synthetic in the new trucks what is the current fix??? GM dealer says it is not sure but the chatter "shouldn't" hurt anything (standard BS line).
    Anyone have any ideas????

Unless you got a bad fan, it's not audible unless you're listening for it and have the radio turned way down. In which case, what's the point of having a radio anyway?

I have a 99 silverado 4x4 ext cab with the 4.8 engine. It is 2 years old with 35k miles. I have had no troble sofar but have been thinking about getting an extened warranty what do you think.

I have had the same problem with my weatherstriping also. I have noticed this on about three strips. The ends are peeling off.

On another note...does anyone have experience with a crooked rear bumper? Mine is about a half inch off and is visually noticable from the back! Is there a TSB for this? Any info or stories welcome

I was wondering if anyone knew what is in store for the 2002 HD? Is Chevy going to add more exterior colors to the HD for 2002? Are there any mechanical or detail improvements from 2001? I would appreciate any insight anyone might have to share.

having a bad weekend; his girlfriend's working and he needs to work on his truck as a substitute. Eventually he'll get married and realize he really wants to go to Kansas and/or work on his truck as a substitute. But, that's what the rest of us call lessons learned and you can't really appreciate it until you get there; right Tim?

Does anyone here the following TSB's that can post them here. I'm having both of the problem and would like to be able to take the TSB to the dealer for the repairs.

    1) 00-08-64-003 "Front door rattle upon closing"
    2) 99-03-08-002a "Front Suspension Coil Spring Noise (New Insulator"

Thanks in advance to whoever post them here!

I've read through some of the posts and it seems others have problems with a pinging or knocking sound when starting. It first starts out as ping or ticking then after a while turns into a KNOCK!

Well, our truck has been in three times now (husband should have brought it in more!) and apparently GM is redesigning the pistons. The service manager told us that when these new ones are out, they will replace the existing ones in our engine.

I'm really leary about this truck with the problems we have had and the fact that it is only 1 1/2 old with 31,000 miles. I read in one of the posts that some people have went the route of an extended warranty because of problems. Has GM paid for this or is this out of your pocket?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Thought it was the main bearings? and not the pistons. Best to be sure on that cause if it isn't the pistons, you're gonna be waiting a long time for GM to come out with some replacements. Service Managers know nothing...well they know how to explain to you nicely that they won't do anything.

or is the issue is with a lot of dark smoke coming out of the exhaust ?
  • jimdjimd Member Posts: 3
    My friend just bought a 2000 2500, 4x4, auto, 6.0 with 3.73 diff with 16,000 miles.
The truck will stall when idling and when running and will not re start.
The quick fix has been to replace a fuse in the engine compartment
(ECM B 20A which is a fuse for one of the on-board computers)
and then the truck starts right up. This has happened over 5 times and is intermittent.
The dealer replaced the fuel pump and upgraded the program on some of the chips.
With the upgraded chip, shifting is now at higher RPM's but now the truck is hard starting.
This fuse now does not burn out, but the engine will start better if this fuse is
removed and then put back in. Has anyone seen this or is it covered in any prior post.

I have read a lot of posts on steering problems but was never able to determine if it was on the 2wd or 4wd. My Silverado now has a clunk when turning. You can feel it in the steering wheel and sometimes hear it. The truck has 6,000 miles. It is at the dealer today any information you can give would be appreciated.

This will be the second time to the dealer. First time the dealer said nothing was wrong.

you need a new steering shaft

itll make a world of difference
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Just tell them others have had this problem, and it's been fixed after replacing the *intermediate* steering shaft, and you want yours done too, so you remain a happy customer. Should ring a bell.
  • abc246abc246 Member Posts: 305
I forgot to mention that I had 4wd. Does both 2wd and 4wd have the same problem? I thought 2wd was rack and pinion and 4wd was recirulating ball.
Why did they go bad? Dealer hinted there was a steering part that may not have been greased at the factory.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Steering shaft going bad is for both 4wd and 2wd.

So far about 4K miles on the new shaft and its fine.

    Did they fix it?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I have no idea really. I had a theory it was part of the collapsable steering column for safety, a deliberate weak part. For the few who bother to complain, they get a slightly up-rated part, less likely to rattle. Just a theory. The replacement intermediate shaft does make the rattle go away. I think 2x4 and 4x4 shafts are the same.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
upper intermediate steering shaft. Just to clarify.

    Here to help.
  • abc246abc246 Member Posts: 305
Dealer replaced the upper intermediate steering shaft without me recommending it, I was suprised. But, as luck would have it, it is not fixed! I guess it was not that. Believe it or not, it feels just like when I had to have the ball joints on the Blazer replaced. I am going to try to forget about it for now. They also did a brake recall.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I think they can also replace the upper intermediate shaft housing, if the shaft alone does not fix. Don't give up.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
part and it still feels the same....how do we know if they changed anything in the first place unless we had marked the part in an inconspicuos place. Dealers....trust em as far as you can kick em.
  • tucsonjwttucsonjwt Member Posts: 265
it has the engine knock. It looks like GM has not yet solved the ping/knock problem.
  • hunter48hunter48 Member Posts: 30
I have 2001 silverado had a very anoying whining noise come from the front of the motor the very frist day I start the engine. The noise is still there, along with lifter noise starting cold or hot and piston slap above 2500 rpm. If I would have built this motor I would be ashamed to put my name on it,dealer tells me we don't have a fix thats how they all sound. It sounds like a gas diesel only have 9500 on motor and it sounds like it has 300,000.All of us with nocking motors should ask for a buy back !!
  • cowboyjohn1cowboyjohn1 Member Posts: 125
Hey, if all you folks had bad ears like I do, you wouldn't hear all these knocks and noises. It is much less stressful and saves a lot of time not having to figure out what it is and the cure. My 8.1 purrs like a kitten. I can tell that because when I step on it - it goes!!

i have lifter noise cold & hot, is this in all 5.3's 2000yr. thought it jus might b cause of roller rockers in conjunction wit the roller lifters. watcha think? tks lh. not another trip to the dealer, they will probably say its just normal injector noise.f--------------------------------.

I just changed my original tires on my 2000 2500 Silvarado. It came with 245x75x16 and I put on 265x75x16. The dealer said they could recalibrate my speedo to adjust for the taller tires and charged me to do it. Nothing has changed. Has anyone put 265's on and had your speedo recalibrated properly and if so, what did the dealer have to do?
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
It's an upload to your truck's computer through the diag port. I recalibrated speedo/odo with a Hypertech HPIII. That way you can get it down to a gnat's whisker plus a lot of other fun things. But -- the dealer should have been able to do a generic change to 265's without a problem. They screwed up. Go back and [non-permissible content removed].

my 2001 8.1 allison 2wd ext cab 2500 LT started stalling on the freeway at 65mph , I would sit on the side of the road for about 15 min and it would start and run for 5 to 100 miles before repeating problem... after several dealer tries to fix it .. it finally died a block from the shop.. scan tool found no failures but it had no spark or fuel pressure, they replaced the power train control module then tried to start it... still no spark.... scan tool found intermitten bad crank sensor and bad cam sensor.. now it starts and runs great... I have only had it back for 3 days so stay tuned

My truck (2001 'Rado) is back in the shop again and this time its been two days so far. Creaking when slowing to a stop and steering feels like something is loose. They replaced the steering shaft three visits ago but still cant fix this thing. As for the creaking sound (first a cab mount, then a sway bar bushing, who knows what this time) they cant fix that either! I just got off the phone with GM, and they were so sweet! I would be too if I just got some sucker to drop $26k in my pocket for a piece of crap...anyway, the more I type the more pissed off I get. Any suggestions???
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    insulators.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
Speedo recalibration from 245s to 265s is only about 5%. You probably won't notice anything unless you carefully watched the speed vs. tach.

These numbers are for a manual trans or 2500 automatic. Speeds are 7% higher for 1500 automatic. All speeds are in high gear.

    245s w/3.73 = 33mph/1000rpm
    265s w/3.73 = 31.5mph/1000rpm

    245s w/4.10 = 30mph/1000rpm
    265s w/4.10 = 28.5mph/1000rpm

So, at cruising speed you might only notice 100-150 rpm less. If you track you mileage carefully you shouldn't see any difference. If the computer was not reset, you will see a loss of about 5%, less than 1mpg.

What I'm saying, is that you probably won't notice anything if the change was made; you might notice it if the change was not made.

No, seriously keep at it until all the bugs are worked out. Many have had no trouble whatsoever with these new trucks. I am sorry to hear about your trouble. Some have had to go the buyback route. Hang in there.

I just picked up my '00 rado, 4x4, ext cab, 5.3 with 10,000 mi from dealer who fixed rear end clunk per TSB 99-04-21-004 and ordered parts to fix rear door problem. I also complained about a ticking that turns to a knocking once in a while on startup. The dealer gave me a copy of their "Technical Assistance Request" with a suggested action...."wait until end of year for new pistons and bulletin to be released". Does anyone know what this is about?????????
  • michgndrmichgndr Member Posts: 160
Ya might remember I had a bunch of groaning and creaking after I installed my nerfs. I was going to go in and lubricate the isolation bushing, but before I got to it, the noises stopped on the left side. I think the bushings finally found their "happy place". On the right side, I examined the mounting brackets real close and discovered they're pretty close to the frame at the corners. When I hit a bump, I get a clunk. Frame to bracket contact. Got room to adjust, and that should take care of it. Thanks, nevertheless, to all who offered advice. Feels good to know I have an unbiased source of info out there.

I have a new 2500HD with the 8.1L and Allison Trans and I am concerned about the oil consumpsion that the engine is using. At 3k miles the check engine oil level indicator came on the message center. The oil level was down 1 quart. I had the dealer check for leaks and change the oil to make sure the level was full. Now at 6k miles I had the dealer check the level and change the oil again. This time the oil level was down 2 quarts. They say this is a normal consumption rate. Spec is 1 quart in 1k miles per Chevy. Is anyone else using oil at this rate? I have own several Chevy trucks and none of the used oil. At this rate of consumption I won't ever have to change the oil, but just keep adding it.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
don't you think that it's odd for a new truck to consume that much oil? I'd watch it very closely if I was you cause it just don't seem right. And leave it to GM to say that it is within specs.
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
you could pull in with the rear wing windows held shut with duct tape and they'd say, "yep, it's within them thar specs."
kinda like the groan noise i just inherited. going in again to drive with someone who still has hearing on this one now.
  • cowboyjohn1cowboyjohn1 Member Posts: 125
I have the 8.1/Allison. I have checked my oil, but hardly a noticable change. I changed the oil at about 2000 miles and it was "full" when I drained it. I have since checked it - not many miles tho - and no noticable consumption.

  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
you were asking whether anyone else was having oil consumption problems right?
it does sound like your's is out of spec. though.
my '87 1 ton with 454 had started gulping oil like it was going out of style just like yours, and at first i got the song and dance. second dealer checked it twice and replaced the engine. if you really want to mess them up a little, just have them check the level, go drive it 100 miles or so and then drain a quart out of it and bring it back for them to check it. bet they'll start talkin normal to ya. believe it or not, this advice came straight from a goodwrench mechanic.

I live in a very hot area ,it can get 120 and hold for a few weeks. The tires on my truck are heat rated (I). The truck has only 200 miles but I'm planning to replace all five with at least a (I) rating. Consumer Reports says no less than (I)
Chewy say's they are in sped.

I live in a very hot area, it can get 120 and hold for a few weeks. The tires on my truck are heat rated C. The truck has only 200 miles on it but I'm planning to replace all five with at least a B rated tire. Consumer Reports says no less than B temp rating. GM feels they are in spec. I have asked then to replace the tires with any thing B or better.

Hi all, Hope someone can help me out. Ended up with a 1999 Z71 LT 5.3 by default. Long story but the person i leased it for is no longer allowed to drive in this state.

Truck just turned over 40,000 last night. But yesterday afternoon when I was driving it, my ABS light came on and when I shut the truck off there was this sound of something still running underneath the truck. I called the dealership - they said its the ABS motor. is this soemthing that should go out...

Whenever I go over bumps there is a chirp sound in the rear end of the truck, they have already replaced the springs once, any thoughts...

Any idea on life span of window motors. I had the drivers side replaced and was having the same problem with the passenger side just not as bad, so they "fixed" it without replacing the motor and still having the same problem...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of friends have said they are experiencing very rough shifts from 1st to 2nd in 00 and 01's in four speed autos in 1500s', shifts that go from harsh sudden engagements to several shuddering thumps. I would appreciate any input and am sure these guys would like to know. Thanks and hello to all from a new log-in.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
but it's from 1999. I would think that this would have been corrected for the '00-'01 models. Might be better if they checked for trans reprogramming updates avaiable here:

for the information on trannys. Where can one get tsbs on this shift problem? I am also interested in the transmission computer update you spoke of. I could not get into the site you posted so I guess this is a restricted site. Thanks much
