I think I'll go back and suggest an alignment again, as the pulling seems tobe worsening. Other than this, we love the looks and driving characteristics of our Lib. Thanks for the responses.

From reading the previous posts I decided to hop in mine and check it out. Went up a local 2 lane and drove in the right lane. I set the wheel straight and let go. After a few truck lenghts it started to drift to the right. I changed lanes to the left and after setting it straight, did the same test. Guess what, it started drifting to the left. This is the first vehicle I have owned with a rack and pinion, everything I have had before had a steering box. The rack seems to be especially sensitive to the road, which may be a trade off to the more responsive steering the rack provides.

I too needed an alignment on my Liberty because of it drifting to the right. I went to the dealer and told them what it was doing and they said it needed an alignment and I've had no problems since.
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
so do you think the drifting right & left is normal then? I have not noticed that as yet on mine but will try it.

how is your's doing? got 320 miles on mine & love it so far. took it to the power wash yesterday and spent xtra time spraying around all windows & the antenna, then went looking for water leaks - dry as a bone inside.

two new concerns that were raised regarding gas tank placement too close to rear end collission zone & eventual rear door hinge stress due to weight of the spart tire. whats your opinion on these tony?
  • hotcoffeehotcoffee Member Posts: 218
I mentioned earlier something about the stress on the rear hinges due to the spare etc.

I don't have any basis for this since I had a Wrangler with the spare on back with no problems.

It occasionally was a pain because it needs a fair amount of clearance to open widely- but it has the cool flipper window which is awesome and what you'd use half the time.

The Wrangler's hinges were exterior and were prone to rust because of the weight and friction on the painted parts, but they were not the same kind of door hinges as on the Liberty. I bet this issue really is not an issue at all.
  • tonysracingtonysracing Member Posts: 80
I guess I would have to accept it as normal. It wasn't like it suddenly veered to the right or left, it went straight for a while and slowly drifted right or left depending on which lane I was in. Also, my wife was pretty amazed by the experiment and I got to explain highway engineering to her which she took great interest in :)

I've got close to 1200 miles now and no problems, however I've had to learn alot about keeping black clean. As long as I dry it by hand it's been looking pretty good.

As for the spare on the door, only time will tell. But, it has been done successfully on many other vehicles and I have never really read a complaint about doors sagging. Im not too worried about it. The gas tank i'm not sure of, I'll have to go take a look later and get back to you. We all pretty much took a chance regarding safety and crash test scores with a new untested platform. Did anyone see the IIHS crash test for the Escape? The dummy went right through the airbag and hit it's head on the steering wheel. Not Good.

FWIW, I ordered a Liberty Limited w/27G, ABS, and Heated Seats in the Chicago area for very close to invoice price. I do have a trade-in, which may have helped on the price of the Liberty.

A little while back there were some posts regarding paying below invoice at Carmax.com. I looked into that before ordering, but also decided against it because they did not have the exact color and options that I wanted.

Thanks to those who posted regarding insurance costs. Since I'm moving up from a '98 Nissan 200SX, I'm sure my insurance cost will increase, but it shouldn't be that bad.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
There is a cost savings for DC in regards to building right and left hand drive models. Window switches on the center console is one item that works for both markets, and doesn't have to be changed. I don't mind them. You get used to them pretty quickly.

The vehicle simply is following the way the road is crowned, very common. If you can get it to pull right from the left lane on a flat straightaway, you may have a problem.

Just wondering what colors everyone is driving out there. We have the dark garnet red (purple). It is the only one I have seen on the lot or the road.
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
silver ltd but dark garnet was my 2nd choice and after seeing it in person, I might have made it my 1st choice. I have seen all colors except for steel blue & salsa red (I dont think those are in production yet)
  • nik70nik70 Member Posts: 4
i ordered the shale green but couldn't decide between that and the steel blue. i saw both in the sport and really liked them. i've seen the salsa red and it is surprisingly decent looking.
  • mad0865mad0865 Member Posts: 176
Dealership where we got ours, had both the steel blue & the salsa (both sport). Really liked the steel blue tho'. No limited on the lots, all sports.

I have the flame red Sport though I like the patriot blue allot also.

Good morning all! I just called the order status hotline and found out I've been moved to D1 staus with an estimated ship date of 8/31. My question for people who have gone through this process is how accurate were your est. ship dates? Also, how long from the ship date until I actually get the Lib.?

    Doc
(waiting on my very first Jeep)
  • hotcoffeehotcoffee Member Posts: 218
....anyone attempting the wait on a 5 speed.

    ....any estimates on the wait??
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
my ship date was accurate to within a few days

    7/23 ship date
    7/26 actual shipped
    7/30 arrived in selkirk, ny
    8/3 arrived at dealer

however, from the time it's in production til the time you actually have confimation that it shipped, the cust svc line really only has one piece of info that is reliable, and that is the date it was released by the factory "k?" status after that there seems to be a news blackout of sorts for a few days until your vehicle is jockeyed around to get on a rail car.

If tonysracing is monitoring today, Im sure he will concur here as he & I had identical production & ship dates.

Well.. a few weeks back I reported that I cancelled my order and decided to purchase my 1999 Explorer Sport (coming off lease). Apparently the buyout is NON-NEGOTIABLE. I decided NOT to pay $16,800 for a 3 yr old car even though it has less than 30,000 miles. I was going to offer them $13,000. The dealer told me Ford has insurance that covers the loss when they sell it at auction. Probably dealer BS as I can't believe that!

I live on Long Island and can't believe how scarce these cars are in the style I want it! Deals range from $100 to $400 over invoice. It seems that the Limited is harder to find and a few dealers even said that they aren't making Limiteds now.

Essentially I wanted a Liberty with ABS and Selec-Trac. I finally found a Patriot Blue Limited with those features plus deep tint. Price is $300 over invoice. I figure I can do a little better but I was happy to find the vehicle! Tonight I do the finance work and tomorrow I will pick it up. I'll keep everyone posted on my initial impressions.

Called DC today for an update and now have a VIN number. The Liberty is still in "D" status, and has been for over a week, but hopefully will be moving along to D1 soon.

Here's my timeline so far, so those who are tracking their own orders can compare:

7/6 - ordered loaded silver Limited 4x4, all options except engine block heater
    8/1 - BX status
    8/14 - D status
    8/21 - D status, VIN assigned

If you are tracking VIN numbers, my last 5 digits are 80838. The last time I saw anyone post their VIN it was in the 59xxx range.

5 speed on the V-6 wont be available till Jan. 2002. Here's the official FAQ from JEEP's site at http://www.jeepunpaved.com/liberty/faq/index.html

Q: Are there any features, or options, that will be added after Liberty’s initial launch?

A: The 2.4L Power Tech engine with five-speed manual transmission will be available October 2001. The 3.7L Power Tech V6 with five-speed manual transmission will be available January 2002. All other options are scheduled to be available shortly after launch.

I ordered a Limited 4X4 on 7\31 but am still on "BX" status. This Monday the DCX info line person told me the "Limited" package itself was on restriction until Sept. I'm hoping to have the vehicle by Oct 1. Anyone think that's a reasonable time to expect delivery?
  • iggycatiggycat Member Posts: 25
Given my own experiences and several other people I've seen in this forum, I'd say that you have a slim chance of seeing that Liberty Limited by Oct 1, depending on what options you ordered.

For my order, the dealer told us today that he figures around another month (including shipping time), based on the current "D" status. That would put it at about 11-12 weeks, which appears to be about average.

You should probably be getting your Liberty around the end of October, which would be about 12 weeks from when you ordered.

It seems that part of the Liberty ordering experience is a long wait to make sure you get exactly what you want. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

...from a first time buyer. I asked the salesman about the 16/20 gas mileage estimate. He mentioned that the estimate was based on 4wd only and would be slightly higher once factoring in 2wd usage. Is that correct? Also, for someone who doesn't plan on strenuous offroading, would Select Trac be worth the added cost? Finally, for those that have financed the purchase for 60 months, what interest rate did you get, and more importantly, how negotiable is the interest rate typically?

    Thanks to all who answer...
  • tonysracingtonysracing Member Posts: 80
Selec-Trac isnt meant for off-roading. Specifically, it will allow you to leave the vehicle in a full-time 4-wheel drive mode even on dry pavement. Traditional 4-wheel drive systems must only be used on low traction surfaces, or you are risking driveline binding and damage to the vehicle. I would highly recommend Selec-Trac to anyone considering a 4x4 Liberty, it's definitely worth the money.

I ordered on 6-19-01. Got a delivery date of 8-1-01 2 weeks later. Arrived at the dealer on 8-2-01, picked up 8-3-01. Just about exactly 6 weeks, but i guess the wait time is getting longer?

    Tony
  • iggycatiggycat Member Posts: 25
EPA mileage on the sticker is most likely derived in 2wd mode. Using Selec-Trac in full time mode shouldn't really make it worse, but running the Liberty in 2wd mode probably won't make it better either.

As for finance rates, http://www.peoplefirst.com has 60 month financing for a direct-from-dealer purchase at 6.65% as of this afternoon. The Fed lowered the interest rates a quarter point again today, so this might drop again soon if we're lucky.

Here I am trying to relive my youth and since I can't fit the troop into my old CJ, I am looking at the Liberty.

I know that the 5sp V6 will not be available until January, but I was wondering if anyone has seen anything in print reviewing it? I was hoping that some lucky reporter got a sneak peek.

BTW, the brochure says that the selec-trac will not be available with either 5sp.

I ordered on 7/31 and at the beginning of last week my dealer said that I have a build date of the 3rd week in September......I won't be even expecting to get my Liberty until Mid-October looks like. That's okay, it will be worth the wait.
  • snafu4snafu4 Member Posts: 9
Thanks for all the info about order and delivery experiences. It does look like an Oct 1 delivery date wont work. Since I'll be moving to another state by the time the Liberty is likely to arrive....I wonder what can be done. I don't mind waiting, but don't want to drive 800 miles back just to pick up a car. Then there's the engine break in period I'd need before driving 800 miles back! Argh. Then what about all the extra mileage on my trade in? My dealerhship assurred me I had ordered in time (2 months leeway). Looks like they might be stuck with a Liberty when it's delivered! (well, not stuck as it would sell quickly I suppose).
  • rmk17rmk17 Member Posts: 16
I second the thanks to everyone for posting about ordering and delivery timelines. I ordered my Patriot Blue Limited on 8/13 and called the DC 800# today for the first time. My truck has a BX status code. However, looking at the post from iggycat, I will probably be in BX status for a while! My dealer told me I'd have the Liberty 4-6 weeks from when I ordered, looks like they're clueless. Waiting patiently...

Hang in there rmk17. At least you have a new hobby while you are patiently waiting- reading all these message boards about your Liberty. ;-)

The good part about the wait is that you can plan ahead for the purchase. Get your financing lined up and all that, so you can pick up your vehicle with less hassle at the end. I'm going to get a loan from one of the on-line financing sites, http://www.peoplefirst.com or http://www.eloan.com so I can just walk into the dealer with a check and avoid the whole "How much do you want to pay a month?..." negotiation and finance hassle. Of course, it helps that our salesman is the fleet/internet sales manager for the dealership. We sent an e-mail to a couple dealers asking for a quote, and this guy replied with $100 over invoice for a factory order. So the price part is fairly easy. If I can avoid getting ripped off on the financing by getting my loan outside the dealer, I'll be happy.

    "#1297 hotstuff1's ramblings by indylowflyer

You are comparing a mini-suv(Liberty) to a mid-size suv(Highlander), these are not in the same class. The Rav4 is the vehicle Toyota produces in the mini category. So wake up!

    #1298 but by winbro
edmunds puts the liberty in the mid-size category along with the highlander and its not suppose to be.

    #1299 Huh?? by rsholland
You actually think the Rav4 and the Liberty are both Mini-SUVs?"

I would rather compare in price range, and then see how much I can get for my money, rather than limit myself to someone else's category, and try to compare that way...

"need something to go camping/hiking and to the beach etc."

Me too! I bought a 1997 Wrangler Sport!

"first of all, it was alot smaller than I thought, it looks bigger on the outside, the cargo space with the seats up is almost non existant"

    true
"..and with the seats down, they aren't flat!"

    Who cares?

"Then the tailgate is that terrible design like a rodeo, you can't open the thing in a tight parking space,"

    ?huh?

"with that heavy spare on the gate, how long do you think until the gate sags and doesn't close right?"

I am buying a bumper mounted spare carrier for the Wrangler.

"...saw where the gas tank was, anyone see it? It is BEHIND the rear axle! I know I would always be worried when I was at a stop that someone would rear end me and I would go up in flames!"

All the Wranglers have this. I haven't heard of it as being a problem...

"ear space: Hey, my dog seems comfortable back there, so it's gotta be better than sitting in the back seat of my taurus. At least she can stand (yellow lab) or lay down comfortably. Personally, I think the room is sufficient."

I looked at Liberty and thought 'Hey, it's great, but the dog can't even turn around back there, and the windows in back don't open!' I have a husky/shepherd mix, and she loves to go for rides.

    Can your dog turn around?

I think when the right options and model and pricing come out, you are going to trade up to a Liberty (next year some time?).

Driving home today and all of a sudden I heard it, WHACK!! Piece of road debris or a rock bounced right off the windshield. Now I've got a 15 inch spider crack in front of my face. Can I have the honor of being the first on this forum with a damaged Libby? Im calling the dealer tomorrow, no one other than them will get their hands on it.

    Tony
  • winbrowinbro Member Posts: 235
I hope you get it fixed at the dealer under warranty, but wouldn't this fall under your insurance comprehensive? although most of the windshield auto places probably dont have the liberty windshield yet.

on the bright side at least the debris did not skirt up your hood scratching the paint as well as cracking the windshield.

also, yesterday when I left the train station to come home, I saw they paved the access road so I took it real slow - thank god it was asphalt and not the tar & chip stuff they use on the country roads here sometimes.
  • tonysracingtonysracing Member Posts: 80
Yeah I know the insurance will cover it, but I don't want any other glass than original equipment. Last time I had a cracked windshield was on my S-10. I had it 6 years when it broke. The new glass was put in by an auto glass shop. The new glass looked worse in 6 moths than the original did in 6 years. It looked like the replacement had a coating on it that got scratched and chipped real easy. Anyway I think im going to order the front wind guard. I hope it fits behind the brush guard I also have on order.

If you look in the back of the Liberty brochure- I recall it mentioning that the grill guard does NOT work with the deflector.

(I believe it was in the big brochure- in the back)

hey guys~~first off, I just found this site because I'm so excited about my pending Liberty purchase so have been enjoying your repartee and am impressed with your vast knowledge re: 4X4's, metals, engines, you name it.

Because of the layout of this board, I decided to start at the beginning so as not to miss out or not understand the conversation...I'm on message #174. Most of what I'm reading is informative and fun butttt I have to take exception to the characterization of 'women' being the SOCCER mom set who will no doubt be attracted to this new cute ute....yes, let's face it, the Liberty IS a cute ute. I'm female, yes, but not a mom and most definitely not a soccer mom. I'm concerned that while I'm tooling around in my solid Jeep Liberty Limited 4X4 with sunroof trying to look 'cool', you tough guys are going to think I'm yet another SOCCER mom....this is thoroughly tongue in cheek...what you think is not weighing heavily on my mind but I just wanted you guys to know that some women appreciate the Jeepness of this new JEEP.

I've been an off-roader for years (I'm a very young 45)having pitted for many different off-road races (and really wanted to race)...the Baja 1000 was the coolest tho I've pitted for the Barstow to Vegas and many others. So I'm a dedicated off roader with a deep appreciation for Jeep.

btw, my bro-in-law who died recently (too young IMO) worked the Wrangler line in Toledo. He said the Liberty WILL get the respect of Jeep die hards (he was one himself) and that time will prove the Liberty as one of the best. Although I live in SoCal, I visit Toledo a lot and saw the Liberty plant go up...it's a state of the art monstrosity...biggest car plant I've seen.

Anyway, I'll stop, just wanted to jump in the convo and let you know that not ALL females are SOCCER MOMS LOL thanks for the education and entertainment guys.
