Isn't graduating from a boombox (or something similar, even if it has those itty bitty detachable speakers) to a true A/V receiver the most amazing thing? We had a discussion about home theater setups on that 'other' board, recently! Which speakers did you buy? And cables? The right choice for those components can make a huge difference as well!
I use the Toshiba DVD player for playing my DVD and the CD and I have connected the DVD player using TOSLINK optical cable, as well as standard RCA jacks and selector is set to AUTO(i need to experiment what would happen if I took out the RCA jacks).
Speakers:
(please don't kill me...please)
I am using my old boombox AIWA speakers(6"woofers + 1"silk tweeters) as main speakers and AIWA center and surround sound speakers. I need to change the center speaker, but the main speakers are certainly upto the task. And so is my AIWA subwoofer.
I really need to go out and find out a better pair of main speakers, but for now, they are not worth swithing to an expensive brand. Believe me.
You guys ever hear of Mirage speakers? Canadian, eh?
I'm using 16 or 18 (forget which, but its moot for the LOW wattages we're running) guage Acoustic Research cables, and have a JBL NSP-1 speaker package (4 N-24's as mains and surrounds, and the excellent N-Center-1 as the center) and a Yamaha (model number something-105) sub, 8" or 10", front-facing (live on the top floor in an apartment building, downward facing was outta the question
For the first 2-3 weeks after I bought the receiver, it was ooked up to the Jensen freebie $50 per pair speakers that CC gave me as part of the special they usually run on HT receivers, and I was stunned by the difference when I hooked up the small N-24s, even in stereo mode. Good speakers make a HUGE difference. Of course, now I feel the N-24's are good enough as surrounds, and the N-center is a great center (incidentally, the center speaker does the MOST work, especially when you watch TV or DVDs - so budget sensibly for a center speaker upgrade), but are somewhat inadequate as front speakers. I'm now considering getting rid of one pair of N-24s (and the sub), and buying standalone, full-range JBL's or Infiniti's that can handle the base and provide more powerful (but also clearer at low volumes) sound, and dispense with the sub altogether! But it'll be a LONG while before I can budget for those kind of speakers - they cost way too much money (200+ each!)!
I've got some good fronts (Mirage OM-10's) but need to get a center. I'll probably stick with a Mirage center....would hate to shell out lots of cash and not have the speakers sound right together.
I pretty much know my ears wouldn't be able to tell the difference, others can.
Speakers are sooooooooooo subjective.
And sticking with Mirage might not make a difference. If they have changed the models at all, just because it's Mirage doesn't mean it will match.
The OM-C3 (non-Omni-polar) or
The OM-C2 (Omni-polar, which my fronts are)
I'm sure the OM-C2 would work better, but I'm not a true audiophile and I doubt I'd be able to tell anyway. Not to mention the OM-C2 is about 300-400 bucks more than the other one.
Anyway. I think it would just look cool too having all the same speakers along the front
Anybody else see "Bowling for Columbine"?
I just saw it this weekend and wow...it's a really great documentary.
I was interested in hearing what US people thought about it.
eg. The bose tiny cubes cannot handle low bass. Low freq bass is handled solely by the subwoofer.
Now we have the the Indian Superstar Amitab Bachhan who has a real low freq bass(heavy) voice and those bl*&^dy bose cubes could not handle it in some dialogues and the voice was directed to the sub-woofer....dialogues fromthe subwoofer???
Hell No. Bose was out of the picture there and then!!
Ashu, you have a fantastic speaker pair. But you know what? most of the times I listened to High end speakers, they appear to overemphasize the highs and I cannot stand shrill highs.
What my AIWA main speakers do is very clean represenation w/o any unusual highs and extremely wonderful lo-mid ringe handling. No coloration.
Plus she got two golf umbrellas since it was a customer-loyalty pre-sale event.
She got better than S-Plan pricing (I think it was $16k plus some change).
We get to finalize paperwork and drive her home tomorrow. She said she'd let me drive it sometime.
But I know, the temptation is there to want to answer right back. I probably shouldn't have said anything in response to him at all.

I think you should all go see Bowling for Columbine while on your holiday. Enjoy.
Hint: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, _, 7, 8...
I think Pat is already on vacation, otherwise she would've drop the hammer down already :-)
I went shopping for a center channel and they cost a minimum of $150....too much.
I kept on looking and I finally see that most of the high end center channel consist of dual woofers and a tweeter.
hmmmm.....so I bought a pair of SONY bookshelf speakers for 29.99/ea featuring 130mm woofer and 25mm tweeter from circuit city.
(msrp $80.00 at Sony stores)
I connected them in series and so now my center channel speaker has dual woofers + dual tweeters + dual bass ports.
and they handle Frequency Range 80Hz - 50kHz.
Yeah!!!
and they sound great(at least better than the cheapest center channel I could find at Best Buys, Circuit city and Tweeter stores.
