So, I am new to the Board and have been reading the various posts. I am finding lots of useful information but am hoping that maybe someone can clarify what is a good deal and what is a bad deal. I am looking to lease a Highland Ltd. w/power liftgate, and sunroof, but I am not picky, I really just want to get the best deal that I can. I assume I can get a better deal on a 2008 as opposed to a 2009, but I am not sure what kind of lease payment I am looking at and how much money I should expect to put down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Chicago and am currently looking at a 2008 Highlander Limited AWD. I've read a lot of the posts and am looking for verification on prices people are getting. It looks like most people are getting right around invoice price for their Highlanders and then from that they are getting the rebate for their area. In Chicago the rebate is $2000 so am I correct in thinking that a good price for my area before tax title etc... is $2000 under invoice?

    Is anyone doing any better?
  • iwantvaniwantvan Member Posts: 9
    You can look at

    www.fitzmall.com

to see the best prices in the washington dc metro area. The 08 inventory is getting small, but there are some models you can compare. I believe the prices are at about 2000 under invoice. We also have the 2000 rebate in this region.

I think the current rebates end today, Dec. 1st. Has anybody heard if higher rebates will come to the KY/Tenn/Indy area for Dec? If anybody finds new rebates, would you please post for me.
    Thanks!

You're on the right track, JJ. I don't know where in the Chicago area you are, but when I purchased back in May, Brian Bemis Toyota in DeKalb (just a bit longer drive) was terrific to deal with, flexible, motivated, and gave the best deal on my trade. I'll buy all my Toyotas there from now on.

Anyone bought a 2009 Highlander Sport or Limited in Canada, and care to share price paid?

    Thx.

Looking at the 4WD limiteds here in the DC area, it looks like the 2008s are only running about $2500 less than a comparably equipped 2009, which is almost entirely based on the $2000 rebate. Given that we can't find any 2008s with the options we want in our preferred color (Magnetic Gray), I'm starting to think it makes more sense to wait a couple of months and get a 2009. In my mind the $2500 savings doesn't justify the loss of our preferred color as well as the immediate depreciation / wear from a 2008. Also, the 2009s are already selling at below invoice, and sales numbers are even further down for November than they were for October -- I'm thinking that while there are no incentives on the 2009s now, that because they are trying to sell off the 08s. Maybe once they clear out the 08s (say in February or March) they'll offer incentives (like low APR financing) in order to boost sales. Or am I totally crazy?

Hi there, I'm new to this board and hope you can answer some questions. What is the big diff. between hybrid and non-hybrid with price and mileage? And debating which pkg to get. Seems crazy to buy dvd pkg when one can get a portable for $100. Also - want to hear pluses about navigation system, Does it tell you where traffic is. and once again -- much cheaper to buy an external gps although not as fancy. we're going for the limited model..also,we live in NYC and will prob. buy in NJ - but could stick to NY - Brooklyn, Bronx or upstate - any thoughts?

    Dave,

I just signed a contact with http://www.leithtoyota.com and am dealing with Sedric. They beat any price in Virginia by around $2,500. I was told there is no way that dealers in the Mid Atlantic states can come close to matching that because in the south east there is a 5,000 rebate by a friend that works for a dealership.

Sedric beat the www.jimbarkleytoyota.com (Asheville, NC) price by $250. Jim Barkley posts there best price on the internet. I guess they may go lower to match a price but most dealers will not meet it. Leith Toyota is in Raliegh it is half the distance (3 hours) from Richmond. I am picking the car up Friday so I hope it all goes well. On Jim Barkley's web site one letter from a satisfied customer said that the dealership delivered their new car 500 miles and only charged $300. I found out about delivery after I signed the agreement with Sedric. I think I would have had it delivered if I had known that before. Good luck.

Also http://www.leithtoyota.com has an admin fee of $399 which they waived (they actually lowered the sales price by $399). Jim Barkley has no admin fee.

I just traded from a Camry Hybrid to a Highlander Hybrid. The Highlander difference is not as bad as with the TCH because you can get the HH at a discount and the cars go at MSRP. However, with that said, it is difficult to get a HH in trim levels you may want. They seem to either come in a base level with no leather, or loaded up (moonroof, leather, NAV) if you go with the Limited. I wanted leather but did not want the other options so I eventually went with the HH base (although it was as loaded as you could get it). Study the Toyota site to see how you'll have to option them out.

My base HH was about the same MSRP as a Limited ICE only model. However I wanted the Hybrid system and if it wasn't for that then the Highlander would probably not have been on my list anyway.

Milage will vary a lot between people and their styles of driving, however I would say that you'll do around 20-25% better overall on FE with the HH over a gas only Highlander, maybe more so if you're in the city.

I did not want the DVD system and it is possible to find a HH Limited without that option. However every HH Limited I saw had the NAV system and moonroof. My past experience with the NAV was that it was complicated to use and I never used it for anything but the energy screens (which were great). It did have a lot of features the garmin did not have but the garmin's are pretty cheap right now and you can move them from vehicle to vehicle. With the built in, the best case is you'll lose 50% of that cost in depreciation and have nothing when you dispose of the vehicle.

If you want a moonroof, leather or Navigation system in a Hybrid model you will have to go with the Limited, which will put you in a $47,000 Hybrid. I think there are a lot of other vehicles out there competing in that price range and unless I was simply hot on the FE I would go probably have went with them (ML, FX to name two).

I was able to get a substantial discount on my 2009 HH and that sealed the deal for me. After some research it seemed to me that the HH would hold its value a little better than the Highlander and with that and the new model year and the gas savings I decided on a 09HH over a 2008 model of the other options I had. I figure at worst case it will be a wash over time, but if (when) gas prices rise the FE will become an important plus once again.

I'm not a lease expert but will comment since no one has yet on your topic. My current SUV (Ford Expedition) is my first lease experience. You'd probably have to have a dealer calculate it for you. What I found out last year was the end of the year vehicles already had depreciated and when you figure that into a lease you're paying for that depreciation. So currently if the Highlander is getting a $5000 rebate on 08's but it has already depreciated $10K then you're going to eat the extra $5K over the life of the lease. You're leasing a vehicle that is already a year old. Same deal with purchasing. If you buy an 08 with little money down you can be upside down real quick on the loan. Whereas with the 09 you're paying a year off before the new ones come out. (Yes it will depreciate when you drive it off the lot too but chances are you won't trade it in that first year). The 08 will always be a year behind on depreciation ($2K to $3K) over the 09. The only plus is that when you trade you may have a low milage car with an end of the year purchase where you might have a high milage car if you buy an 09 when they first come out.

I used to trade often and when I bought an end of the year car and wanted to trade in 18 months it nailed me pretty good as I was trading a car almost 3 modle years old and only had been paying on it for a year and a half. Had to come up with a lot of cash.

Also most postings I have seen say put as little down as possible. Research that some to feel comfortable. There are issues if the car is totaled that you will lose the money you put down. I'm not sure why, if you have $3600 cash to put down you'd want to to save $100/mo on a 3 year lease anyway. It's all about the same and with reasonable rates I don't think the cost outweights the benefit.

I know absolutely nothing about leasing a vehicle... have never done it...

However, before you make any final decision to lease or purchase, you may want to investigate whether or not it would be prudent to obtain some form of GAP insurance, especially if you're looking at a model year end vehicle and/or a low down payment. This will hedge against becoming upside down on your loan/lease if you were to (god forbid) total the vehicle, especially during the earlier portion of the loan/lease term.

Here's some more info on GAP insurance from Edmunds.

    Richmonder,

I am looking for the same thing as what it appears you purchased. How much of a better deal did you get from Leith Toyota compared to the local dealerships around here. I have offers from Haley and McGeorge but they seem a little high.

Any help you can shed would be much appreciated.
  • richmonderrichmonder Member Posts: 15
This is the SUV I got below. AWD. Price is from Asheville dealer. No dealer prep fees. Leith sold it for 29,199 with $399 dealer fees ($29,500). They have another one almost identical to the one I bought. It might be the same with out the all weather mats. $2500 lower than the best price in VA. Once I found prices were that much better in NC I didn't worry to much about VA.

If I had to do it again I would do it the same or see if Asheville would meet Leith's price and deliver for $300.

Thanks for the help and all the information on this site. I bought my 08 Highlander this week. I live in VA and went to Jim Barkley Toyota in Asheville for the purchase, due to the better rebates in that region. I used frequent flyer miles to fly to Asheville, they picked my up at the airport and took me to the dealership where I completed the paperwork and a walk through of the car and was on my way w/in an hour. It was a very easy transaction and Jim Barkley was great to deal with, esp my salesman Aaron. Here are the details:

08 Limited AWD w/ Navi in Magnetic gray

    Options
Tow Prep Package includes: 5,000lbs-TOAT $220
    Navigation System with-NVAT $2,505
    Power Rear Door-PBAT $400
Auto Rear Air Conditioning System-QRAT $585
    Multi-Stage Heated Front Seats-HDAT $440
    Color-Keyed Sport-Styled Rear Spoiler-RFAT $200
    Power Tilt/Slide Moonroof w/Sunshade-SRAT $850

    MSRP $40, 345

    I paid $31,288 + TTL

So you're the one that bought the car out from under me! I had called Jim Barkley about that exact car earlier this week, and they told me they had just sold it that morning. So close and yet so far! Congrats on getting the magnetic gray -- those are pretty impossible to find now.
  • iwantvaniwantvan Member Posts: 9
LOL, that's too funny. The Magnetic gray is very nice, I"m really happy. Good luck in finding the right car.

    RIchmondguy,

If you buy in Richmond, I've found McGeorge Toyota to be very good to work with. Kenneth Puryear gave me a pretty good price and is a super nice guy. They will be getting all of my service and parts from here on out. I picked up my car yesterday. It took too long but all in all a good experience.

FYI - NC taxes the rebate money and VA doesn't...or at least that is what I was told. So the difference is $150 less than I thought.
  • dj_davedj_dave Member Posts: 16
Richmonder - if you buy in NC from out of state, you shouldn't be paying taxes; you would pay those in your home state when you register your car. I've been talking to several dealers in NC (I live in MD) and none of them would charge me tax if I bought from them.
  • richmonderrichmonder Member Posts: 15
Thanks dj_dave. A high ranking VA DMV employee told me that it is OK to pay the dealership in NC and have them send the VA taxes to the DMV in Virginia. I also talked to dealers in NC who were going to do it the way you did. I guess you can do it either way. That's why I wanted to make sure

I might have gotten the part wrong about if in VA you pay TAX on the rebate or not. That might have had to do if you were trading something in (which I didn't do.
  • dj_davedj_dave Member Posts: 16
Good point, Richmonder. I imagine that the NC dealers living close to the border with VA would probably be taking the tax, since they probably are used to having out of state buyers from VA. I'm coming from MD, on the other hand, which probably is why they automatically just told me that I would pay tax when I registered in MD.

On the tax question, most of the dealers I've been dealing with in MD and VA seemed to apply the rebate before taxes on their quotes, so you are only paying tax on the price after rebate. I had one dealer whose quote applied the rebate after tax, and that seemed weird to me.
  • RIchmondguyRIchmondguy Member Posts: 9
    Thanks Richmonder,

I think that McGeorge Toyota dropped out of the price race as I haven't heard from them in a couple of days since I said I was talking to a couple of dealerships in NC.

Conversations with two dealerships are going fairly well and hopefully I will be driving a new car soon.

You can so tell who is really helping the rest of us and who is a DEALER IN DISGUISE. Enough of these, "I went to this guy at this dealership and he gave me the best price" without telling us what you paid. Watch out buyers, the dealer may be on this site and using it to sucker you in - especially if you fly out there only to find hidden charges. Don't want to be paranoid but the dealers are desperate and sneaky.

I found a loaded 2008 Highlander Limited AWD in Blizzard Pearl that is a dealer DEMO with 5k miles. MSRP is right at 41000. Does anyone have an idea what I should be able to get this Highlander for? I'm thinking the dealer won't be able to go low enough to cover the depreciation on a vehicle that is technically "used". Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!!

First of all, this is a great forum and was very helpful when it came to buying our new car. I thought I would post my experience and hopefully it will help some one else out.

I am in Houston and the new car price/invoice at Edmunds did not include all the extras packages the dealers throw in to increase the MSRP. I thought KBB did a good job of adding those packages, it was a pain to go through the list and add everything but it was pretty accurate of coming to the same MSRP as the dealers here and an invoice price.

This car is for my wife and she wanted a Grey 08 limited with nav which was hard to find. I found two, both demos in North houston. One was not kept well at all, the interior was already torn up. The other was pretty well maintained but the dealer was not willing to work on the price.... MSRP 41500 and were only willing to go down to 38,100 saying that was at invoice. So we walked out. We had contacted them through the internet.

One thing I have noticed in Houston, I dont know if it is true for the rest of the country, the internet department say it will charge $150 above invoice but there invoice is at least $1500-1700 above the invoice listed in KBB. One dealer let me take a look at there invoice and the extra money came from extra fees. And most were not willing to waive these, kinda odd since cars are not selling these days.

We decided to go for an 09 Limited. We thought the 08 is already a year old car and already depreciated one year and starting on the second year. The only benefit for the 08 is a 2.9% interest for 60 months so that saves at least $2000 in interest. We are only planning on keeping the car for maybe 3 yrs maybe longer. What are peoples thought on this, were we on the right track in our thinking?

Anyway we could not find an 09 gray with nav but my wife found one she liked without and it ended up being at the first dealer we had walked into 2 months ago. They were pretty aggressive, there was at least another few hundred dollars to play with, I think but I did not have a real idea how much I can get an 09. I dont know if there was any holdback on the 09s?

    09 Highlander Limited FWD
    MSRP 38,900
    Invoice 33,600
Options: JBL, heated from seat, power gate, rear AC, Moonroof, Option F package and vehicle shield package

Selling price 34,200 so about 600 above invoice.

I think it was a decent deal. A friend had recently bought similar equipped car but an 08 for $300 cheaper. Thoughts.... advice what I could do better next time ( this was the first car I have bought)

As per the articles, shop around before you buy for a car loan and get pre approved, My bank offered 4.8% ( excellent credit) for 60 months. When we bought the car, the dealer offered 7.1% through the SAME bank. At that point we said we had a better deal with the same guys and were already pre approved. The questioned it at first, I didnt have any proof with me and the bank was closed on Saturday. I told them we could wait till Monday and buy then. At which point
they came back with 4.79 through the same bank. I guess they make some fee by bringing the bank business.

I know you should get GAP insurance when you lease a car but should you get it when you buy? it adds $9 to our monthly payment but I have 10 days to opt out.

Also, anyone know of a place in Houston where I can add a good in Dash nav?

Sorry for the long post. Any input would be helpful

    Thanks
  • mdhuttonmdhutton Member Posts: 195
Dealer demos are not "technically used." In every state that I'm aware of, a car is legally not used unless it has been previously titled. A dealer demo is just that - a demo.

Nonetheless, you should be able to get a wonderful deal on this particular vehicle. I'd offer 30K.
  • abidjanabidjan Member Posts: 4
I bought a blizzard pearl with with nav sys, ect leather, moon roof in march 08 in bryan, tx for 37500, it also had some option packages on it. it will really pay to shop around and dont believe the salesmen on their prices, if you get the extended warrenty offer half of what they ask, there is a toyota dealer in kansas that whole sales the toyota warrenty for usually a third of what dealer want. it is the same national warrenty. I hope this helps.

We are looking at buying an '08 Sport or LTD for my wife. In our area Central FL, all the dealers list a Dealer Fee of $699.99 plus many have the Toyoguard added at $619. Been through this crap many times over the years and I'm pretty sick of the effort.

Assuming what we want is in inventory, can anyone come up with a valid reason not to buy from Jim Barkley in NC? We happen to love Asheville, and I have already figured a cheap way to get there, so traveling is not an issue. Airfare is $29 one-way to Greenville, SC, and a one-way rental car is cheap through Budget.
  • talen316talen316 Member Posts: 32
Can't see any valid reason why you shouldn't make the trip if you can't get a competitive deal locally and provided Jim Barkley doesn't have any policy against geographic buyers, like apparently some of the dealers in Georgia do...

I believe I checked their website for AWD Sports before I purchased, but they didn't show any available. I ended up buying from a dealer close to my home, but as it turns out, I've paid about $1k more then what I could have paid if I had waited to buy from Asheville. I knew I left a few bucks on the table and was ok with doing so as I wanted to support the local dealer and I knew they don't have the volume to compete $ for $ with some of the larger dealers, but I didn't think I was $1k off the mark...
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405
It may not "technically" be a used vehicle, but it has been driven with significant milage and they should have to take that into consideration. They need to depreciate that as a business expence, not you. I'd look at the deals others are getting on 08's right now and expect even more than that. I just bought an 09 HH for $4200 off MSRP. I'd have to have an aweful good deal before I'd drive away an 08 right now. Look at KBB PPV on an 08 to see what it will be worth once you drive it off. If you buy a used 08 you can indeed find them at the KBB prices. I'd just as soon be a second owner as having a demo. Only advantage is the % offers and rebates and if the dealer isn't dealing then it's a pure financial comparison.

I'd have a hard time being a loyal Toyota buyer if I had to deal with this everytime I wanted a new car.

Find an internet deal and drive a few states away if you have to. They will still service and do warranty work on your car at home. $1300 is a big chunk of change to just line the dealer's pocket with.

I know. Our last 3-4 new vehicles have been Hondas, and I have a great contact at one of the local dealers. I currently drive a 2006 Honda Pilot EX-L and my wife has a 2003 Honda CRV, which is getting passed down to our 16 year old. The current deals on the '08 Highlanders is hard to beat.

Dealing with the local Toyota dealers is more hassle than I have time for. Jim Barkely seems pretty easy to deal with based on what I have read. I don't mind paying a little more to deal locally, but even $ for $ the locals need to be $1,300 lower than JB to be even.

Oops -couldn't figure out how to turn off the bolding.

    Amen brother!

Also, these guys have to much time on their hands since they have not been movin' horses.

A little more dittle time cruisin this discussion forum to see what they are missin'

Everyone out there reading. Do your homework. This is the time to DRIVE YOUR HARDEST DEAL when at the showroom. If it doesn't work just walk. I assure you, deals will only get better with Toyota as time wears on.

    :P :P :P

    Interesting...

    Who are the suspected DID's?

Speaking of homework, I felt like I did mine, but turns out still could have done a bit better on price, although I was satisfied with the deal at the time.

Unfortunately, when I bought, it seemed as if the specific Sport, AWD model with the color/options I wanted were all but just about gone in the SE. Now, I go and check one of the dealers website and they show 3 of the same vehicle available again. So, it's possible for those looking for an 08, there may be more 08 inventory in your area and/or in the pipeline to your area then you're led to believe. In my case I bought when I did not because I absolutely had to, but because I was concerned about what I wanted being gone. Just another tactic that can be used against the buyer I reckon.

I don't disagree that now is a great time to drive the hardest deal, but I was surprised with how many dealers didn't seem all that aggressive in trying to make a deal. Some didn't even follow up.

Should be interesting to see what kind of deals folks are able to get on any remaining 08's early into next year...

No worries, I just got the same exact car from Jim Barkley at the same price as you ($31,211+TTL on an MSRP of $40,345) in my second choice color of salsa red. Very happy with my decision (and the price!), and they'll be delivering the car to me here in Maryland, saving me a 7+ hour road trip to Ashville.

Interesting side note. Most of the NC dealers I was calling would tell me that they would "try" to get the car I wanted, but when I called Jim Barkley Toyota, they right off the bat could offer me the car. I asked why that was and apparently they had anticipated the run on Highlanders and ordered 50 or additional cars (I guess a similar phenomena had occurred last year on a different Toyota model and they decided to get ahead of the curve). So, it sounds like the majority of Highlanders being delivered to the SE are going into that dealership, and other dealerships are trying to do transfers (which is why they were all telling me they could only try to get me the car).
  • jam8jam8 Member Posts: 22
What did they charge for delivery?

I'd love to get some help from all the experts on this forum! I am interested in an 08 4WD HIghlander sport. The MSRP is 38, 232 and the internet price is 31, 988. It has everything except nav. It has leather, sunroof, dual air, rear air, JBL, crossbars, tow package, etc. Again, loaded except for nav. What would be a fair offer? I had made an offer to another dealership that was never accepted, so I do want to be fair. I want the best possible price however! Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time!

Where do you live? If it in the South East, you should be able to get this for under 30K. See my post on the last page. I got the basically the same thing you are looking for and paid $29,500 in North Carolina.

No not otd. I think the price was actually 29,411 +++ it ended up being about 30,500. Go to Jim Barkley's internet site and price it. Go there and get it or have them delivered. As posted on the last few pages, they are more than reasonable with delivery fees. 300 to Richmond, VA or 500 to DC.

You are so right about the dealers not following through - it's shocking. We're in the NJ/NY city area.

I checked out the website. They don't have the color that I like, but they do have good prices. Did you get a price below the selling price or is the selling price pretty firm? I'd love to get it even lower if possible. A lower price just might make me be happier with not getting my color choice!
I'm a bit scared of buying a vehicle 12 hours away from my home, but it sounds like this dealership is pretty popular on the board.

Asheville is 6 hours away from me so I was lucky enough to find a a couple dealers to match their price and Leith Toyota beat it by a couple hundred in Raleigh (3 hours away). Since then I found out that they deliver for a very reasonable price and posted that on the board. You should call them to find out if they are getting any your color. They are supposed to get more.

Thanks, I did look at that website, but they didn't have the color either. Since they are even a greater distance from my home, I may just go with a less liked color. Is the Asheville dealership's sale price their bottom line deal or will they negotiate a lower price?

I found a 2008 Sport 4WD in wave line pearl with leather interior, towing prep package, with bluetooth/9 speaker JBL system for 29,651 before taxes, tags, processing fee. The on the road price I was quoted was 31,919. It seems pretty much in line with edmunds.com TMV pricing. I'm thinking it's a pretty good deal but was wondering what others on the board thought of this pricing. Can I do better?

I'm not sure if the Asheville dealer will lower their price. They told me they wouldn't but maybe they would to match a price. If they are the lowest, there is now reason for them to go lower.

we are about to buy a 2009 limited V6 4 wheel dr. Highlander - we found it at the better dealer for around 37,500 and at another dealership for about 35,500 including our trade in which will be a little over 5000.... this bottom price is including the cheaper pkg and a few accessories. We will go to higher/better dealer and ask to some closer to lower price... does anyone have experience with the toyota dealer in Hillside, NJ on rt 22 ... or what kind of problems might we have if it's not a great place??? thanks in advance!
