Picked up an 09 Sport (in Cda they come loaded w 3 rows, except no JBL, bluetooth, push start and chrome handles) for about $2800 off MSRP. Given there are very few in Ontario and Quebec (production has been cut), I am pretty happy. In fact, because I wanted black with less than 100 kms, I had to order it.

Dealt with 3 local dealers over the phone, gave them my offer, which I based on Car Cost Canada pricing. One dealer accepted my offer and to get them to close the deal, they threw in the cargo tray and body side moldings at 20% off. The other two came in a few hundred more. Time from the call to the first dealer, to the call back from the dealer stating they accepted my offer: 30 minutes. They faxed contract later in the morning, I checked and signed and sent back.

I began using this method back in 1999 based on buying tips I found here on Edmunds, and have never looked back. Avoid all the pressure tactics and you can have several dealers on the go at the same time.

    Hi 08HLBase,

Seems very good deal, where did you get this car? I'm looking for same model HL base. Could you give me detail about the dealer?

    Thanks
  • 08HLBase08HLBase Member Posts: 8
I got it from Woburn Foreign Motors, in Woburn MA, just north of Boston. Since I can't post the name of salesperson or other contact information, I can send you a private message if you leave your email address here (only if this dealership works for you geographically, of course). Otherwise, at least you can use the information as a benchmark in your car shopping. Good luck!

Are you serious? I got the exactly the same one this weekend at Boch Toyota (West of Boston) for $26,300. *sight*

    Hi 08HLBase,

I'm in Boston, the dealership works for me, could you send me the sales person detail information to my email likeping@yahoo.com?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi fatchy,

I am sorry about your experience. I went to Boch Toyota in Norwood before closing my deal with Woburn Toyota. I didn't like the atmosphere and tactics at Boch at all. They lured us in with the impression of they were ready to make a deal, then refused to negotiate once we were there. All their 'matching or beating competitors' price' is merely a marketing ploy.

I got the HL base 4WD with exact option for 25500 + TTL in Boston area before the President's Day.
  • fatchyfatchy Member Posts: 8
Are you serious? Which dealership did you get it from? Does it have a sunroof?

I bargained at two other places for a 2009 base but both of them held firm at 27500. So when Boch offered me a 2008 with a $2000 higher msrp, I thought I got a good deal at 26300! Funny how Boch has this reputation among people I know as a 'low cost volume seller'. What BS!

Isn't there a $3000 to $3500 rebate on the 08's? If so then these dealers would be offering about the same deal.

It's 08 model with sunroof from IRA.

I currently have the lexus rx400h coming to the end of my lease so comparing with the rx450 '10, but seems the lease prices are high on the highlanders. Hello everyone!

I am really interested in 2008 HH Base and I have a few questions:

    1. From my research, the HH Base invoice for 2008 was $30, 780. Even with the current $3000 rebate, that comes down to $27, 780. I saw some people are getting these cars for $25, 500. Is this really possible? Over 2K under invoice. That would be great!

    2. I'd be very happy with base model, but I do want leather seats. Is it possible to have leather seats installed in the base model? I saw somewhere on this forum that its around $1300 extra. If yes, should I negotiate the car first and then have seats installed post purchase?

    3. I am in so cal. Any dealer recommendations?

    Thanks guys!

My van is just about ready to kick the bucket. I've been trying to research the Highlander....
I have a price from Clarksville, IN on a base model with convenience package #2 and cold weather package of $26126
I'm not sold on it yet. I'd like more options but that gets pricey.
    I WANT A GREAT DEAL!!!
Is there anyone out there with a better deal?
Louisville KY, Clarksville & Jeffersonville IN, Elizabethtown KY are near - I'm willing to travel for a great deal.

Fremont toyota @ NorCal has the base model for $25,888
but i'm still waiting on the hybrid model, best offer i can find is still over $35,000
It's 10k difference, but i just love the feeling in a hybrid!
  • rjdoc74rjdoc74 Member Posts: 20
Are you talking HYBRID or a regular highlander? Sounds like a pretty good price for a hybrid model.

See, this is what's confusing me. This whole section is for "Highlander Hybrid" discussion. People are posting these mid-$25K prices and I can't figure out if they mean a hybrid or a regular highlander.

At a dealership in the NE today looking at an 08. Have one left in a rather loud blue which might be the reason it is left. The MSRP is 42235 including dvd, nav, etc. I am being offered the car at invoice less 3500 dollar incentive. Is there any reason or hope to actually get a better deal than the current 33,695? We really don't care that much for the color but could deal with that I guess. I believe the dealer incentive ends Mon. Thanks much.
  • theyattheyat Member Posts: 4
Purchased on 2/28/2009 for $22,989 + fees of approx $200 upstate NY.
    MSRP = $28,165 (after .delivery)

    FE - 50 State Emissions
    EH - Cold Weather Pkg
    CO - Convenience Pkg
    Rl - Daytime Running Lights
    SD - Remove 3rd Row
    CF - Floor/Cargo Mats
  • fatchyfatchy Member Posts: 8
If you could wait..you should. Prices can only go down in this economy. Your choice is about 10k more than mine in MSRP and the offered price is about 8k more, so you essentially buying all the options at 'invoice' price. I think your price is fair but definitely not a steal.
  • drocdroc Member Posts: 4
I kind of see what you are saying. If we both got the entire 3500 incentive given to us, then yes, I am paying for the additional options exactly at invoice, because I'm guessing we both would buy the cars at 3500 below invoice. This would make purchasing a lower MSRP car a better % discount. The 33695 was their offer on first pass when the car we wanted was sold, so he said he would let us take the one that had the dvd for the same price essentially. Are dealers willing to sell the cars for a loss after passing on the entire incentive to a customer for a car that has no holdback? I'm seriously thinking of not pursuing the car given the tire problem (no decent tires in that size, let alone the cost).

    FYI:

    Recall Date:
    APR 18, 2008

    Model Affected:
    2008 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER

    Summary:
TOYOTA IS RECALLING 90,189 MY 2008 HIGHLANDER AND HIGHLANDER HYBRID PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A THIRD ROW SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION." THE NON-DRIVER DESIGNATED SEATING POSITIONS (DSP) ON THESE VEHICLES IS EQUIPPED WITH SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES THAT HAVE A FEATURE THAT CONVERTS THE RETRACTOR FROM AN EMERGENCY LOCKING RETRACTOR (ELR) TO AN AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR (ALR). THE BELTS CONVERT TO THE ALR MODE AFTER THE WEBBING HAS BEEN FULLY WITHDRAWN FROM THE RETRACTOR. THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED SO THAT AS THE BELT IS RELEASED INTO THE RETRACTOR, THE SYSTEM REMAINS IN THE ALR MODE SO THAT A CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM (CRS) CAN BE TIGHTLY SECURED.

    Consequence:
HOWEVER, FOR THE TWO THIRD ROW DSP'S ON THESE VEHICLES, THE ALR MODE DEACTIVATES BEFORE THE WEBBING IS FULLY RETRACTED, SO THAT IT WILL NOT LOCK WHEN CERTAIN REAR-FACING CRS'S THAT HAVE A SHORT SEAT BELT ROUTING PATH ARE INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. THIS CAN ALLOW THE SEAT BELT WEBBING TO SPOOL OUT DURING NORMAL DRIVING MANEUVERS, WHICH COULD AFFECT THE STABILITY OF A CHILD RESTRAINT INSTALLED AT THOSE SEATING POSITIONS. AS SUCH, THIS COULD DISCOURAGE THE USE OF A CHILD RESTRAINT AND IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE CHILD MAY NOT BE ADEQUATELY PROTECTED POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURY.

    Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEWLY DESIGNED SEAT BELT COMPONENT FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT DECEMBER 18, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

    Potential Units Affected:
    90189

    Notes:
TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC. 80D

Here's more information about the recall:

Toyota halts 2008 Highlander sales as part of recall

by Dan Roth on May 3rd 2008 at 10:33AM

Slightly more than 90,000 Toyota Highlanders are being recalled for a seatbelt problem in the third row. The recalled crossovers are all 2008 models built between May of 2007 and March of this year. The stock belts could prevent secure mounting of a rear-facing child seat in the third row, and dealers will install a redesigned part on affected Highlanders. The problem with the third row belts hasn't spawned any complaints or injuries, and owners will be notified starting in June. Still, Toyota has put the brakes on Highlander sales until current stock is retrofitted and assembly lines are resupplied with the new part.

After a couple months of research, shopping for used vs new, we settled on a new '08 on 2/21. Shopping by internet through the fleet departments at a few southern CA dealerships was very easy. One large outfit in LA area included free delivery.
MSRP is 46,524. We got white, which was to us the best of a less than stellar color palette. It has NAV, Front and rear Auto Climate Control, Moonroof, Carpet mats & Cross bars, in addition to the special color.
Price paid was $39,350, plus Tax & Lic.
They claim less than inv., even with $2,000 from Toyota, but who knows?
    Had to be close.
We are happy with the car and got 26.6 mpg on a recent 330 mile trip to the mountains. We own two Prius and love them.
The dogs are happy to have a roomy back seat and smooth ride.

Three weeks back i went to toyota of plano, they have silver 08 used one. he was saying 23k, i offered 19k diveout price , he came up to 20k drive out. i walked out. he keep calling , but now i am looking for new one not used anymore.
Richardson also have some used ones , i saw in lot duing my visit for new limited edition.

    thx
  • dallas12dallas12 Member Posts: 14
Thks for your reply. I was also looking for a price between 19-20K but have not been successfull. I had been to grapevine but they did not come below 22K.
Vandergriff does not have any stock they just advertise that they have a lot of inventory. I would advice people not to go there at all, its a waste of time.

Toyota's sales in the U.S. dropped 40% last month and were down almost the same (38%) for all of 2008. You would think they would be aggressively trying to sell all their cars, including the Highlander. Yet, in the Wash. DC area (includes parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia) prices for the '09 Highlander are the same or worse than they were in October-November! What gives?
  • wvgasguywvgasguy Member Posts: 1,405

For the most part Toyota has never jumped big time into the large rebate / give vehicles away game that the Big3 have played. It's why they are simply sick right now while the others are on their deathbed. As one who purchases new Toyota's they are doing their part to make my resale as high as possible by keeping ths prices on their offerings stable.

I enjoyed huge discounts on my new Expedition, but now the resale is horrible.
  • luck11luck11 Member Posts: 425
Yeah, same here in Canada. No rebates on 09s, and until a week ago, even the financing was not even close to being on par with other Asian competitors (ie Nissan, Mazda etc). Now at least they are offering 2.9% on 36 months, still a far cry from 0% being offered by some others.

Reason being is that, at least for Cda, Toyota began cutting production before x-mas in anticipation of low sales. Most dealers (about 6 in total) in my area don't have any HLs on their lots....I had to order mine and it will be about 7-8 wks before it arrives from Japan at the end of this month. That said, I was able to negotiate a price of approx 3% over invoice plus some accessories, which is pretty good for up here.

park100, where were you able to get that deal? I've been looking in Houston and can't get very close. I found an 09 Highlander Sport 2WD with MSRP: $35,524. The lowest price I can get is $32,837 +TTL. Anyone getting any good deals on these this month?

Bought an 09 Highlander sport with 4wd, leather, sunroof, cold weather package, EVP, auto tailgate (MSRP $36530), for about $31900, total about $34200 out the door in MD (after tax, tags, $100 dealer prep fee)

Could you tell the sell price? Some dealers would sell a HH08 $1000 below the original invoice price minus rebate. If the car has been sitting on the dealer's lot for several months and has some miles on it, you could cut the price more.
  • carinfo09carinfo09 Member Posts: 2
    Hi,

The invoice on this '08 HH is $34,476, as you know they have $3000 incentive from Toyota.
