if its Friday count me in, if its Monday I may have to change my work schedule

more specific directions/address for the plant in Lafayette? MSN maps is putting a trip to Lafayette at just over 3 hours and about 185 miles. I'm 'using' this trip to help get past the break-in mileage on my F-XT, it *should* be here by then ;-)

I'd probably boogie out after the tour on friday if I come but right now it's looking like only 20% chance of me going. The more I think about it the more I will likely not go. Too much effort really. Especially if everyone else is flying in or renting a car for it.... I knew we couldn't get a big thing going like the Saturn dealio a few years ago :( Web-racers if you will...

we had a few more (than Juice's list) commit to the trip on the chat last Thursday? *shrug*

I guess it is only April, so it is hard for people to know their schedules almost 2 months in advance. Give it another couple weeks or so before opting out Mike.

I'd love to have a nice procession of Subies entering the plant. Just think of the year span too, not to mention that we could have most of the models too! Paisan needs to trailer the Legacy turbo behind the SVX ;-)

C'mon folks, sign up (and drive your Subie if you're able)! 8-)

    Mike,

Sorry to hear that. I know you and Juice were one of the first people to push the idea of a tour. Maybe we'll make it an annual event, aka the 48hrs.
I'm still looking forward to going. I believe the address I found at superpages was
5500 State Road 38 East, Lafayette, IN 47905

I purchased a new Forester on 3/1/04. I traded in my 99 Forester that ran perfectly for 138,000 miles. At 500 miles my new Forester started to generate a loud harmonic noise at speeds above 65 MPH. The service department was too busy to check it out when I took it in for the first oil change at 2800 miles and suggested I return for another appointment when I could leave the car for a longer time period. When I returned for the second appointment the problem was diagnosed as a bad differential and a new one was ordered. After waiting a week, I received a call from the Subaru Service Manager stating that the Engineers were still evaluating the replacement differential and it would be another week before the part would be received by the dealership. There were additionally two other problems, one relating to rough idle and the second pertaining to brake noise. Both were dismissed as nothing to worry about as no codes were detected by the service technican. My question is, should I open a case with SOA? I'm not off to a very good start with the dealer, Byers Imports in Columbus Ohio. It is interesting that the car was delivered without a lug wrench and 44 lbs. of pressure in the tires. Great quality control. Is it time to consider american? Help!

I think it would be a good idea to open a case with SOA. I can understand the comment about no codes pertaining to the rough idle but there's no way a brake noise will ever generate a code. In both instances you need to be able to replicate the problem for the service tech.

    no code = no problem
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
The problem with today's mechanics is that there are really no mechanics just fitters. The modus operandi appears to be replace parts until something works.

In the not so far off olden days real Mechanics could diagnose most problems, and also repair or rebuild most units.

With the advent of Ist OD1 then OB11 most units are disposable hence the term I use fitter, as opposed to mechanic and so the heavy reliance on codes to Identify problems.

As you just just said no code = no problem:-)

     Cheers Pat.

and look into another dealer for service if that one isn't satisfactory. You are nowhere near a "lemon" yet and I seriously doubt SOA will let you get within spitting distance of that mark. Good luck.

I don't know why the lug wrench was missing but the high air pressure is a common complaint around Town Hall that seems to affect most makes.

Manufacturers over-inflate the tires to prevent flat-spotting while the cars are being shipped and the dealer techs are supposed to adjust the tire pressure when they prep the car.

But lots of techs miss this, and lots of salespeople apparently don't know to look either, and have to listen to people complain about bumpy rides on test drives. Or worse, lose a sale without any idea why.

My local mechanic (who is also a drag racer and builds his own alcohol burning monster) says the code is only a guide as to what is happening and in what general area. To be a "real" mechanic you still need good trouble shooting skills to find the root of the problem.

I just took my '01 Legacy GT in for the recall to have the additive put in. As long as they did I had the antifreeze replaced also for the tune of 70 bucks (rather expensive but I figured it was a good idea to put the conditioner in with new fluid).
Question: did the recall included the checking of the head gaskets and is it now guaranteed to 100K miles?
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Do we have any firm times yet? I might be able to head out early on Thursday to be bright eyed on Friday:-)

Who is planning on driving out from the East Coast? And, who needed the lift?

Assuming I can get off work, I'll probably want a lift as it's too long of a drive for me without a co-pilot.

I'd bring my daughter but at age 14 she's not interested in touring a car plant.

    Patti:

I had head failure in March of 03 with 74,000 miles- repair done at dealer for $1578. Nothing was said about extended warranty and I paid the bill. Does this qualify for extended warranty?

    What should I do next?

    Help and thank you.

Since it was over a year ago I'm gonna guess that you're out of luck. Had you called SOA at the time then you "might" have gotten some relief.

nothing was said because the head gasket campaign wasn't going on in march 03...

do you still own the vehicle? don't see it in your profile.

    Dave,

I can offer a lift out for you. However, on the way back I was planning on stopping off in Kentucky to visit some friends (they are just outside of Cinncinatti).

oh i think not, if you keep heading west you end up in space, so stop wraping around the earth, you go on a straight line and end up in space. put that in your pipe...

It seems to me that One reason to have your car dealer serviced is to be informed of recall and exctended warranties-maybe I should have known, but the car was clearly out of warranty--yet replacing heads at 74,000 miles is not normal wear and tear in my opinion
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I imagine that the WRX, non-STi, will eventually receive the 2.5L turbo in a similar state of tune as the Forester XT and '05 Legacy GT. Either that or if it stays at 2.0L, then it must gain variable valve timing and a more modern turbocharger to enable it to make more boost at lower rpm and build it much more quickly.

edit: by the way, there is a Suggestions for Subaru topic! ;)

    Patti:

I do my own oil changes because I like synthetic oil in a cold climate. What kind of proof will I need for warranty purposes? I typically buy it by the case at Costco so have no dated receipt.

    Help!

Is the factory tour date Friday 6/18 or Monday 6/21?

    Thanks,

    Jim
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I have my plans around 6/18 for the tour. Not sure what other activities are planned though. I don't think a time has been identified yet either, but it's not even May! ;-)

Dorothy giving you some 'courtesy miles'? Your airline of choice? I'll bet Continental or bust!!!

    Steve

    John,

I save whatever I can - the original cash register receipt for the oil and filter purchase, and cut out the UPC from the cans/jug and from the filter box. I put whatever I have into an envelope, date & mileage, and file with all other service info. That should be adequate. And in the case of Subaru, you can make an entry of your work at the "My Subaru" site.

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I keep a log book too with my gas purchases and oil changes and other repairs. Then you can argue it's your usual practice to keep a running record of maintenance (especially when it's obvious you didn't fabricate the log book the day before - that's where the receipts come in <g>).

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I have receipts for cases of oil, like most folks, so I also add an entry on My.Subaru.com, and then print it out. I put it all in a 3 ring binder.

You should see the look on people's faces when they see how organized the information is. It leaves no questions as to how I take care of my vehicles.

I say this as I approach 61k miles and haven't done the 60k service yet!

We do not have a MY Subaru site, SOC is still in the stone age don't you know.

We still have not been notified of the coolant deal yet.

      Cheers Pat.

Pat - was that the stone age or the ice age? :-)

Today I had the coolant conditioner added (and had the coolant changed too) along with tire rotation and balance. I asked the service guy about flushing the brake fluid. He said that Subaru doesn't recommend flushing any more - only removing and adding new fluid to the reservoir. He said there was an incident where flushing caused a bubble in the line which affected the ABS and caused an accident. I mentioned the whole idea of flushing is to remove bubbles and he reiterated that Subaru no longer recommends flushes. Is this true?

    Greg

P.S. I then went home and attempted to replace my brakes and rotors, but that's a story for the Outback thread.

Ice age stone age, I just wish to hell they would smarten up and get with the program, they operate like a completely separate company.

Sounds like that dealer is being lazy, you still gotta flush it out.
