Not digging up the dead, but was just wondering if SoA is aware of mail queries WRX owners are receiving.

Join the Subaru Crew every Thursday evening for a chat session from 6-7pm PT/9-10pm ET. The chat room opens about 15 minutes before the scheduled start time, so stop on in, even if it's just to say Hello! All things Subaru is the general theme, but anything automotive is fair game too. Come on in and get to know some of your fellow Town Hallies better! See you there...

I've been in some new model technical training and a few projects that were very time consuming. Plus - lacrosse season has me running at night. I'll be on the chat tonight.
Please accept my apologies.
Patti
I will be posting more details about the trip at some point tomorrow. I will need a solid head count. If you are going, please send me an e-mail so I can start the formalized list for SIA. I'm so psyched for you all and just wish I could be there with you!

Yes, there are enough to do both!
Cherry Hill is a lot closer than Lafayette, IN. I would still do both though. Who else is going again to SIA(you can put me down for that)?
Take care Patti, and try to take some time for yourself in the midst of everything.

I couldn't get on line last night. I was very disappointed to have missed the chat again...
I cannot believe that you will not be there with us, but I am planning on going to Indiana. I have always wanted to see a plant where they build big, hunking metal objects! (real man's stuff...) All I ever get to see is plants where they make microscopic thingies (on dinner plate sized wafers). I would consider driving, but am still leaning towards flying if I can do so.

My car has alot of (mostly highway) miles on it (96,500).
You can reach her at pmickel at Subaru dot com. I spelled it out so that harvesting software doesn't pick it up and start spamming her.
Judy: did they use the coolant conditioner in yours yet? I'd rush that. You should get a letter from SoA, but don't wait, call and schedule the appt now. Call 800-SUBARU3 to expedite, but you can schedule that w/your dealer directly.

I would consider getting an oil analysis done. Some of the folks here have had that. You could also flush the coolant and look for oil comtamination.
Basically if you find oil in the coolant or vice versa, then I'd be concerned.

I'd really really like to feel like Subaru is watching my back, so to speak. That's why I posted on here.
My last vehicle was a toyota truck. The head gaskets blew at 82,000. Yes, it had water in it. I don't know why it blew but the timing chain was slack in it...anyway toyota was no help. I spent alot of money and time rebuiding the top and then the bottom of the engine. While waiting I pretended I was getting a new car to cheer me up. Guess what car? A Forester! I had the Subie brochure and everything. Then I got the truck back and flipped it on the interstate. Totalled. Took the money from the insurance, and instead of paying off the engine rebuild debt, bought a brand new Forester. Hey, a near death experience will make you get what you want. I LOVE my Forester. I drive my Forester all over the SouthEast to paddle rivers (I'm a kayaker). It's been the best car I could have chosen for my needs. Having another lemon engine would be horrible. Please, Subaru, help me with this!
Patti's catching up but I'm sure if you do that, you should be covered.
When you call the 800#, ask them to open a case file, even if it's just a "Customer Says" complaint. Get a case number, too.

Will it work? Well, in tests they say it did work, but even if it doesn't you have the warranty.

The way I see it, if my gaskets are leaking now, then Subaru should replace them now.
Hmm, they're going to want to try the conditioner, though. It hasn't overheated or anything, has it?
I don't think they'll agree to go to that expense right now.

Here's the thing - if the gaskets need replacement now, they need it because of a manufacturer's defect, not because of my care or lack thereof. So if Subaru doesn't fix the problem now, and this fall, my gaskets fail, my engine overheats, and I need a rebuild should I be responsible for the cost?
Many things can cause you to smell coolant, and the most common is a leaky hose connection somewhere. So I'd be leaning in that direction now. Heck, I spilled a little coolant when I did the 30K checkup on my Outback, and smelled that off and on for months!
Two simple things you can do: 1) take off the oil cap soon after the engine has been shut off, and look on the underside of the cap for any creamy beige frothy stuff, which would be coolant in the oil. Also examine the dipstick for this. 2) on a cool engine, look under the radiator cap, in the reservoir, and perhaps drain a little coolant out the bottom of the radiator and see if it looks OK. If there's oil in the coolant, you'd know.
If these two diagnostics don't turn anything up, that's positive news. Furthermore, if you car has not overheated or gone through large quanitities of oil or coolant recently, those are good signs too.

My brother and I are going to jack up the car tomorrow and look at the drivers side head gasket to see if we can see a leak.
Though if you changed the water pump you should have a new O-ring (front main seal), that's usually changed along w/ the pump.
The radiator is easy to drain. You turn a knob until it drains, the knob doesn't even have to come off. This takes seconds to do once you've found it.

I would not expect HG problems to anonymously affect gas mileage, you'd surely notice the HG problem by other symptoms at that point.
Biggest culprit with gas mileage is underinflated tires. Make sure they are pumped up correctly.
Since you had major cooling system work done recently, those may have contributed to the coolant smell you're detecting, particularly if something was not done correctly and there is a small leak.
Craig
If it is anytime except the third week in July and we could work out a date soon, I will come all the way from West Texas!!!

Please try to remember - this isn't a recall - it's a customer service campaign. We're doing the best we can considering that not ALL of the vehicles will experience the seepage. It's more precautiounary because we've seen a higher number of issues than what we anticipated. The feedback continues to support that this conditioner does a great job. Try not to worry about it too much. If you get it checked out by a dealer, they will know what to look for. And....call us back once they do. We'll do our best!

I'll try to get something nice together for you! And....I'll be jealous the whole time!
