that's what I said, Ken. all late model Subarus have either an Alpine (ovoid remote) or Code-Alarm (rectangular remote) original equipment system.

paisan muddied the water, but I had it right. ;)

I think one of the original posts (by Dan?) was info on the '05 alarms.

    -Dennis
  • bookemdanobookemdano Member Posts: 55
That was me. I want the perimeter alarm, but would like to disable the motion (vibration) sensor in certain situations. My 2002 Audi can do it and my 1999 Volvo S80 did that. I asked Patti if she could check it out to see if the perimeter alarm upgrade has a disable switch.

If not, I'll have to get an aftermarket alarm that has the feature.

    Regards,

    Dan.

Before going the aftermarket route, I would just install an override switch for the shock sensor. Typically, alarm sensors just trigger a ground signal to the control unit that sets off the alarm. You could put a simple hidden switch inline with the shock sensor wiring to bypass it. Any good alarm installer could do it. In fact, I would consider it a DIY project myself. Most Subaru accessories are user-installable, and come with instructions. This is all you'd really need to investigate the feasibility of a modification.

The sensor bypass mode is probably available in our current OEM system, given that it's Alpine, and we're [Subaru also] not made aware.
My guess is we'll have to perform some kind of ritual, you know, like putting the car into valet mode.

    -Dave
  • bookemdanobookemdano Member Posts: 55
Yes, that might work nicely. I might be able to rig up some sort of bypass that would reset itself every time the the car was unlocked.

    Yes... Interesting thought.

    Regards,

    Dan.

I'll check the wiring diags and let you know which wire to cut/switch to have a shock sensor override.

Just curious if SOA has any plans to extend the warranty and/or maintenance coverage on rotors/brakes beyond 36K. (I for one, will be out of warranty in a few months.) Or if there is an new/improved rotor or brake pad now available for 00-04 OBs. I posted in Legacy/Outback Wagons Problems/Solutions #3149. Thanks. Martin
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Believe me - I want to go on this trip really badly! An in-depth auto factory tour, an opportunity to meet more of the crew, etc. Unfortunately, it is getting more difficult to do with each passing day. I am boxed in on travel dates, so flying is the only real option. I missed the opportunity to use freq flyer miles, so it becomes a cash deal, now up to $460 with some swizzling, $525 on a straight deal. And there are only a few seats left... In another day or so, I am probably out.

I should add that we are all very appreciative of Patti's efforts, but maybe this is just not meant to be? Given the overall difficulty of this date (Factory situation, Patti not available, problems with local logistics, Father's Day on Sunday, rising cost of travel), I would be open to postponing and making another attempt.

Snowbelter, I know that racingbrake.com is planning on coming out with legacy/OB size rotors within a few months. Very beefy units that we are using on our race cars in WRX size.

    Hey all,

My Legacy's been afflicted with a frequent 0301 CEL. If I run it toward 75 in 4th, it will often show, and occasionally it will flash. Sometimes it will drop to 500RPM after I slow down or stop, but it recovers after a few seconds. My fuel economy is still junk, too... I used to get 22/28 regularly, and now I get 16/23. The last time I brought it to the dealer, they sent me home with a "cannot duplicate the problem" and no fix. It's much more frequent now. It happened with the previous plugs and the current ones, stayed with cylinder 1 after swapping wires around and even after installing a different coil pack.

Before I bring the car to the dealer again, and before the warranty is up, I'd like to know if there's anything else I can check, or what the minimum I should expect the dealer to do should be?

    Thanks,
    -Rob

What's that a code for? Misfire or something?

    -mike
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
    yes, google says:
    P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

you can have ignition coils and plug wires tested for free at many autoparts chains. call around!

other than that, try a different dealer perhaps? this one should be dead easy to troubleshoot, honestly.

    ~c
  • rsgarlatarsgarlata Member Posts: 8
Yes, it's a misfire CEL. After using 2 coils and moving wires around, I'd like to think that the coil and wires are definitely not the problem.

This looks a little bit more complicated. As it seems intermittent, I'm wondering now if the fuel injector wiring is a little temperamental?
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
yes, after you confirm that the coils and wires are good the next is the sparkplug. after that, fueling. injector, fuel filter, pressure regulator if present, the fuel pump.

next is the timing. seeing as how it's a modern engine with crank and cam angle sensors (although 1 bit resolution) you check those first.

this should be in maint & repair. ;)

AutoZone will scan codes for you for free. They were also selling an OBD2 scanner for $99 last week, IIRC. I shoulda bought one.

Who is going on the SIA trip? Just want to see whom I'll finally be meeting in person. 2 weeks to go!

    Mark

Patti-what time do we have to be there for the tour?
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
Would anyone be interested in toting the Edmund's goodies to pass out at the tour? Please contact me to make arrangements. How many will be attending?
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
    Karen,

Where do they have to be picked up from? I'll have my wagon to myself, so plenty of room. Let's see-take stuff out from Edmunds, bring stuff back for Ed. The Suabru Delivery service:-)

I'm still waiting for the details before I make a commitment. Don't want to plan on showing show up at noon when the tour was over at 11.

The subject matter should be in m&r, but my issue with the dealer is my concern. What do I do when they tell me they can't duplicate the condition? Just pay for the rental car I have to get and live with the CEL?
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
I see two Subaru dealers within 25 miles of whatever Subaru.com considers Syracuse, NY and four more within 50 miles. as I posted before I would suggest bringing it to a different dealer.

well - I STILL haven't received any return calls, but I believe I understand the problem. However, I can't really share it at this point (dungeon). I will as soon as I can. Either way - I sincerely apologize. One of those unpredictable things. As this "internet" activity is still a bit uncharted, there are others that do not understand that the rules of my participation are clear and (from what I feel anyway) accepted and I wouldn't share what is inappropriate or premature. I guess others aren't quite comfortable with that yet so the option is to ride it out until we can talk about it.

If we are going to choose another date, I will try to do a better job at "locking" into something before we talk about dates and then letting folks know what was agreed upon with SIA vs. us giving them selected dates. I think it would be easier for them to feel a level of accountability. I don't think they are bad folks for not responding - they just don't know what to do with this.

Once again, I'm sorry for letting anyone down.
I'll post more as soon as I can. It's not a big deal or super mysterious - just confidential at this point.

FYI - it does not have the perimeter feature and there are ways to disable it - - - the info. is available when it is sold and it can be provided to owners with proper proof of ownership.

    I hope that helps?

    Thanks!

a tour cannot happen. Just that I can't get something formalized to be set up. I believe that the plant will be open on that date, etc. If folks are still going for a "regular" tour, just post a response here so I can let them know that you will be there and who you are. It may help make it a bit nicer.

please call us if you are having a concern that the dealer can't address. We can give them a call and see what we can do. Please let the Rep. know that I directed you to us and that I'd like to see the case. Thanks!

Patti: I will be in New Jersey tomorrow through next Wednesday. Is there anything to see at SOA in Cherry Hill?

I know I cannot make the June date, so the SIA tour at a later date may be possible for me.

Of course, I am but a small fish in your large pond.

Hope it works out the best for everyone.

I will definitely be there if its on. May have 3 kids tagging along.

Patti, whats a "regular " tour, do you mean they give tours regularly at SIA??
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
if it will cost you anything to wait. I'm flying a bit blind since I'm not getting return calls. If folks do want to still go, I will call them and leave word who is going to be there and we can go from there, but it won't be anything special like I intended since I can't get a contact to work with me on it. Your call. I'd hate to have you book it and something go awry when you got there, which is why I'm suggesting a reschedule - - - -??/

    Sorry

    Patti
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
I'm concerned. I just want to confirm that the 18th won't be a problem. I don't know what they will be able to show on the regular route, or details, but they do have them.

    Patti
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
well, we don't offer tours per se. I was thinking down the road that a visit would be nice. What to see? My office (if you can find it under the paper)? But, in the future, we could have a little meet there and then go to the famous Red, Hot and Blue for some ribs and the blues?

This week is nuts though. I think I've been in meetings from the minute I walk in until the end of the day!

if June 18th isn't the best time to go (best for the tour recipients and best for the plant workers), then by all means reschedule it.

Should we start picking a day for the rescheduled tour? August?

A meet in Cherry Hill sounds good!

    Patti,

I'm a bit confused. In your post, you said that the enhanced security system "...does NOT have the perimeter feature and that there are ways to defeat it." Did you mean to say that it DOES have the perimeter feature?

    Thanks and regareds,

    Dan.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
The use of "perimeter" in the description is confusing. I think "zones" would better describe the feature if the "perimeter" it refers to are the doors, hood, and trunk/reargate. Another zone would be the interior if it is sentried by infra red/motion sensor - that is what I believe Dan [bookemdano] is referring to.

Perimeter, to me, will mean an invisible fence put up by a proximity sensor that can detect approaching objects within 2 ft around the vehicle.

    Patti,

First off, I just want to say "Thank you" for trying to get the tour to work. I think we all realize that you put a lot of effort into this, just that we happened to pick a bad time (new product release) to go.
It sounds like it would be better to reschedule to sometime later on this summer. That may work out for having more folks go. As long as it's not the week before Labor day.
Ed - looks like it will be a while before you get your parts:-).

..the info. is available when it is sold and it can be provided to owners with proper proof of ownership.
Hopefully the owner's will keep the info in their homes and not in their cars! ;-)

You gave this your best shot, but maybe it is time to look towards another date. We are now down to two weeks and most of us have been unable to secure firm travel plans. It sounds like there are solid reasons being given from the factory as well for why this might not be a good time for an in-depth visit. Plus, from the day you announced that you could not attend, much of the 'fun factor' seemed to have drained away!

Please, lets pick another date that will work best for the plant, with you, and the crew at large.

    Thanks for trying!

  • bookemdanobookemdano Member Posts: 55
assuming that perimeter simply means that the system detects when a door, hood or tailgate has been opened. I'm wondering if the system also has a motion detector. And, if the motion detector can be disabled temporarily.

HOW the motion detector can be disabled is not important (now), just the existance of a motion detector disable feature.

    Regards,

    Dan.
  • rangerron7rangerron7 Member Posts: 317
Thanks for all of your efforts in getting a special tour going! No apologies needed.
I agree with many of the Crew who think it may be a better idea to reschedule, especially considering the new product launches.
    Thanks again,

I like that idea. Maybe when Patti feels there is something good to show us (a 7 seater test mule) we could go up there.

Heck, I drive to HAWAII to see that!

you as friends. I still feel bad that it didn't come together, but your nice words go a long way.

Let's proceed with getting a date. Once these "issues" are resolved (that I'll talk more about next week), I'll ask them to give me a date and to LOCK it in. We'll go from there.

SOA - well, it might be boring, but when the 5+2 starts showing up, that might make it more fun. Also, we could get a great vollyball game going across the parking lot from us at Cooper River Park (the Forester's vs. the Legacy's?) followed by a fun dinner? Hmmmm - we may have something here....

Thanks again for your patience and kind comments. I'm staying on it because at this rate, it may take me a month to get a lock!

    Patti
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
the system upgrade does NOT have a perimeter function (with motion detectors, etc.). It does have "shock" sensors. One short alarm sound for a light impact on the vehicle, continuous alarm for a stronger impact. The disabling is for that set-up.

    Once again, sorry..

    Patti

Ed - looks like it will be a while before you get your parts:-).

Not a problem. It's not like the Studebaker is my daily driver, though it has been pressed into service as such on several occasions when my wife wanted to borrow the Forester (this was before she got her current vehicle). At this stage all I'm looking for is interior trim parts to finish the restoration; the car is mechanically sound and aside from needing the bumpers rechromed it looks nearly new on the outside.

Patti: Again, lunch or dinner @ Red Hot & Blue is enough for me.

I intend to be in the chat in half an hour; hope to see you all there.

    Ed
