Patti- I'm very sorry that the 18th didn't pan out but we appreciate your efforts. Planning an event like this takes a significant amount of time and energy and is virtually impossible when you're not getting support at the other end. A SIA tour is still a good idea and I think would be well attended provided:

    a. The date is set well in advance (3 months?)
    b. A detailed itinerary is developed (so folks know what to expect)
    c. Lodging information is available and preferably arrangements are made for a group rate at a designated hotel
    d. Regular updates are posted (or newsletter sent) to keep everyone informed

Given your busy schedule, this might be too big a project for you alone to tackle.

    Patti,

Many thanks. It looks like the perimeter security enhancement is what I want.

    Regards,

    Dan.

Dan, if you have the ovoid remote you have Alpine. They have the best perimeter security (microwave- or radio wave-based radar) in the industry. The stock unit can probably accept an Alpine radar unit, look in your phone book and find some local car audio/security shops. They can help.

    ~c
PS, perimeter security is a total waste unless you have a convertible vehicle btw. they are just an annoyance to passersby... *no one* avoids a vehicle because of a perimeter warn-away chirp. I put an Alpine alarm in my ex-wife's Miata.

I'll be willing to put together all the organizational stuff. I'm pretty good at it (see 48hrs of Tri-state events, 3 years running) and would be willing to organize all the non SIA stuff like hotels etc.

let's start getting a date together. Late September or early October? When does the foilage start turning in Lafayette? Might be a nice scenic drive for some.

Fall is beautiful in Indiana! I can get away during the school year as long as I have a little notice to put in for a personal day (and so b/f can put in to trade with someone if his shift falls on that night) ...
Thanks for all the work, Patti ... we'll get it figured out next time .. this was just a 'trial run' .. lol

The only problem I can forsee is that the last 2 weekends in Sept (9/17 & 9/23-24) are religious hoildays. Also, personally, Columbus Day weekend is no good - my niece is getting married and I don't think she would appreciate my not coming because of the SIA tour. Any other time should be good.

For the second time (that I'm posting), Dan is inquiring about the '05's. Pay attention nOOb! ;-)

Let's settle this. Ask goneskiian, he just picked up the '05 GT with the enhance security. :D

doesnt the factory work during the week like most of the worlds factory?
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
It's because we are trying to do the tour on a Friday, so that we cna spend the rest of the weekend getting to meet each other. Also, it gives us the least amount of days needed to take off.

    Patti,
I know you may not be able to discuss this topic but.....What is the deal? Id navagation coming for the Legacy GT? If so when? Can a 2005 have it added on later by the dealer or is it factory installed. I have a deposit down on a 2005 GT Limited but how far down the road is navigation going to be here if ever. Thanks.

    Help?

    is it available?
    Thank you

Patti: In Msg #1552 I asked if SOA will be covering repair/replacement of brakes/rotor beyond 3yr/36Kmi warranty in light of the many problems so many of us have had with warping rotors. (I referred to Msg #3149 in Legacy?Outback Wagons Problems and Solutions.) Or, if SOA has a replacement rotor/brake pad of a different design or material. Or does SOA believe this is simply a problem of over tightening the lug nuts. This is certainly an expensive repair for SOA to make under warranty and will be expensive for us once we are off warranty as it doesn't seem to be covered under the Extended Warranty we purchased. Should we be asking the dealer to hand tighten lug nuts and to use a torque wrench? Thanks. Martin

John: I saw one in Vegas at the demo, looked well finished and ready for sale to me. No rough edges, definitely not a one-off. It might be new so they may be sorting out the part numbers and stuff.

    Patti,
Did you ever have a chance to follow through on that oil analysis I sent from my wife's 03 OBW? I haven't mentioned lately because I know you've been sooooo busy with the new models, tour, etc.

Just curious as the engine does some to be getting louder in the mornings. My wife will be gone to the west coast for a week in July so I plan to leave it at the dealer's overnight.

    TIA

the dog guards are readily available and they have been for some time. Maybe the dealer has poor information? Maybe contact us with the specifics on the dealer and we'll check it out? Sorry it took so long to pick up this thread!

the overall impression I got was that everything looked normal/good. If the noise is getting worse, can you schedule it to go in before your wife goes away so we can re-evaluate it? Sorry for the delay.

    Patti

hand tighten the lugs. We can't do a blanket warranty extension on pads/rotors. You do have your situation documented with us, so if you have a problem in the future, just call us. We'll do what we can. There are so many factors involved with brake issues/problems, that I can't just say that we'll take care of things. I can promise that we'll do everything we can.

    Thanks!

    Larry,
Just curious. Have you posted it here, or any other site?

Patti - thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I'll make an appointment to leave it over night when she goes away.

It doesn't sound like lifters in that there's not enough noises - i.e. the sound I'm used to with lifters is more of a clattering, this is more of a single loud clicking.

It does go away after about 15-20 minutes. It doesn't get abruptly louder under deceleration which is what I've been told to listen for with piston slap. So that, plus a good oil analysis puts this in the lower priority band.

Dennis - I did post the results in the Outback forum sometime back - so if you search for my posts you should be able to find it.

Sorry for the delay in replying Dave! I just checked this thread again as I need to post a question to Patti. More on that in another post though.

On the alarm system from the manual...
"The alarm is triggered by: Opening a door, the rear gate or trunk lid. Physical impact to the vehicle, such as forced entry (only vehicles with shock sensors (dealer option))."

I wonder if this shock sensor dealer option is the "upgraded" system I got as part of my Popular Equipment Group #1? I think so, as I just checked the www.cars101.com site and that's how he describes it as a single option.

FWIW, the alarm system can be disabled. I'm not going to share that info with you though. ;-P

Dan - It doesn't sound like there is a motion sensor involved so the pooch should be just fine in the vehicle.

    Cheers!

    Patti,
I've received my "Welcome to Subaru" letter from you folks there at SOA with the Mysubaru.com info on the reverse side. It's got my VIN and a PIN for registration but when I go to Mysubaru.com and try to register it gives me an error message that says something to the effect of "That is an invalid VIN." or "mysubaru.com does not recognize that VIN."

I've double and triple checked to make sure I'm entering the VIN correctly but I still get the same error message.

Of course this is not a major issue but I would like to use this online feature.

    Thanks!

    -Ian

p.s. I'm still loving the new GT! While the wait was long and often times very frustrating, it was well worth it!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Correct there is a shock sensor, the dog won't set it off. It's incorporated into the brain of the OEM alarm. I won't go into it's location or placement or disablement.

We've been doing upgrades to OEM alarms now here in NJ for about 8 months and have protected at least 75 cars with our systems that work with the stock ones. We've had 3 or 4 broken into or attempted to be stolen, none of them were stolen however :)

    Patti,

Just want to thank you for helping to get the piston slap on my 2000 Outback Limited repaired. Just got the car back and they replaced the #2 and #4 pistons using a piston kit provided by SOA. It is a lot quieter. It also appears to have a bit more power than it had before.

It took quite a while to get the zone rep in to test the vehicle, and a while to get all of the parts in, but now its done.

    Thanks.

I wonder if this shock sensor dealer option is the "upgraded" system

Nah, I'm guessing that woouldn't be the upgrade. Shock sensors are pretty much standard issue on all alarms.
    Maybe component upgrade... maybe.

I had ordered the upgraded alarm when I got my '03 WRX, and all it was was it does an retard passive arm - lock door yourself then close door, the alarm will activate in 30 ~ 45 secs.
It sits disconnected in the car now.

    -Dave
  • goneskiiangoneskiian Member Posts: 381
I'm pretty sure it is the option I got as I don't see any other alarm system options available. Unless SOA is really trying to pull a fast one and charge me twice for one upgrade. I don't think they'd do that though.

Ian: Did you order the security perimeter too? I have that ordered on my GT wagon (due to arrive next week!).

Patti: I posted over in the 05 Legacy boards but my Wagon is due in next week!!

    SO excited!

    Ken,
Yes. It came with the Pop. Equip. Grp. #1 (along with the auto-dimming mirror/compass). I also got the sub/amp.

Patti: Thanks for your suggestion that I ask the dealer to hand tighten the lug nuts. I'll do that. I'm wondering if SOA is thinking that over-tightened lug nuts or unevenly-tightened lug nuts cause rotors to warp. If thats the current thinking, I'd like to know as I would have no problem investing in a torque wrench. I'm a bit skeptical of relying on the dealer to always do things the "right way". Martin
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That is the only way that rotors warp is via overtightening the lugs. The other "warp" is really transfer of pad material to the rotor.

    -mike
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
usually lugs don't tolerate much of that type of abuse, though. they typically pull a thread or snap in half at the loads that usually deform rotors.

    ~Colin
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
All it takes is uneven torque -- once the rotor heats up, it will warp.

    Craig
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
I say, I have been very careful on torquing my lugs and still warped my rotors 3Xs. Don't think this is a torque issue. I now have Wagner pads and Subaru rotors on. We'll see how this works.

    Greg
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
it's not lugs in your case Greg. it's what Mike spoke of, pad deposit, which is historically referred to as "warped rotors". one thing is certain: whatever you call it, when that's your problem, turning them on a lathe fixes it. the face of the rotor is uneven.

maybe we could continue that line of discussion in the maintenance topic?

Head over and look at this:

    stownson "Subaru Crew: 2005+ Subaru Legacy/Outback" Jun 25, 2004 6:35pm

A potential 05 Outback buyer is concerned because the front passenger airbag(s) switch off when his small wife sits in the front seat. Maybe you can comment on this.

    thanks,
    Craig

Sounds like the 150lb weight sensor.

Wow, that's high. I thought it would be around 100lb.

  • snowbeltersnowbelter Member Posts: 288
Colin: I think this is not an inappropriate forum to discuss rotor warping. Earlier today I asked Patti to comment on whether SOA had come up with the cause of the problem (overtightening or uneven tightening of lug nuts, perhaps). Earlier, Patti had replied to my question about warping by suggesting that I ask the dealer to handtighten the lug nuts. If there is a known "cause" for the problem, then perhaps, we can come up with a solution. This topic is also being discussed in the Legacy/Outback Wagons Problems and Solutions forum. Martin

I was just wondering if a lengthy technical explanation of "warping" should be here or elsewhere. I don't mind either way.

    ~c
  • goneskiiangoneskiian Member Posts: 381
I wonder what the weight limit is. I just reread my manual and it doesn't say one way or the other. All it refers to is whether a child that has outgrown a child seat or a "small" adult is sitting in the passenger seat. In these cases the passenger side airbag may not activate.

Perhaps Subaru knows something about the safety of having airbags hit small adults and or large children. Could it actually be safer for them to not have the airbag fire?

    -Ian
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
    absolutely it could be safer!

but that's a whole different debate. if you want to throw down ;) (not literally!) let's discuss in the Cafe.

seatbelts save lives. airbags are a government band-aid for a lack of seatbelt use.

Colin- Keep it up and the "C" will start standing for cop ;-)

    ROFL.

I was thinking that too as I posted, but I just can't help but think that discussing new airbags in general shouldn't be here. ...Ah to heck with it.

So, how about them Pistons? :)

We can discuss Lafayette Pistons and Gunma Pistons but not Detroit Pistons. ;-)
