I am back again you have helped me sucessfully several times over the past few years with Lease/purchases. I have been looking in the South Florida area for a Civic EX coupe and they seem to be sparse. Is this a real shortage or just something to help inflate prices.

Anyway I was finally offered a deal that is under the MSRP of $19,810. Price quoted was $19,000 this includes all dealer fees. Does this sound like it's as good as it's going to get?

Any one have any experience in my area that is the same or different?

Looking in South Florida also for an LX sedan and possibly an EX sedan. What dealers have you been getting quotes from and for how much $? Looking to buy between the 16th and the 21st.

Has anyone here used data from fightingchance.com ($) to negotiate a price or find holdback information? Supposedly the info is up-to-date and comprehensive. I'm just wondering if it's any different from the information I can cull from here for free. Bought an Accord last year and I'm preparing to buy a Civic this year, so I'm starting to plan my strategy.

    You can find information anywhere.

It's always the prevailing market that determines pricing. If cars are in high demand and short supply, you can't expect deep discounts.

Cars that few people want are deeply discounted.

I live in Pittsburgh. The best deal I can find is list minus $250. This is through Costco. Can anyone suggest something better?

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but had a quick question. A month ago I put a deposit down in the twin cities on a LX Sedan MT but they said that they would have to order. I went through Costco which provided a $700 below MSRP. Well the dealer is telling me that the car is still not on order with the factory because "Honda won't let them order MTs right now"???? Does this sound feasible? Or is my dealer giving me the business becaue they can order their alotment of other Civics and sell them at MSRP? I've started checking other dealerships inventory as I have historically traveled 1000 miles to get the right deal and am finding that there are little to no MT on any of the lots. Can anyone provide some insight or direction on these issues?

    Thanks

I've been shopping for a Civic LX 4dr Auto in the greater Orlando FL area (8 dealers), am able to get a decent discount off MSRP (sell prices of $17, 200 - $17,500, some higher), but these "dealer fees" appear ridiculous. I'm getting $499 - 599 typical, and the lowest $299. I equate them as "additional dealer markup", but other than telling the dealer "nice try, I'll give you $50 as a dealer fee", I'm not sure what other options there are. I haven't yet tried this tactic. I tried the Costco approach, but Costco doesn't restrict or mandate "Dealers fees" (the Costco dealer will sell the above model at $500 over invoice but wants $599 dealer fee).

Any suggestions on how to proceed? What has worked? Does anyone know of any greater Orlando FL dealers who will negotiate this down to something I consider reasonable ($50)?

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer
  • wco81wco81 Member Posts: 594
That's why I started asking for out the door prices.

Anyways, I may try to wait until the end of the model year to see if there are better deals to be had than now.
  • riposteriposte Member Posts: 160
You subtract the "Dealer Fee" from their offering price.

If they claim to be "$500 over invoice", PLUS they're raping you with a $500 "Dealer Fee", you insist upon "invoice", and let them keep their so-called "Fee".

Use the information here on Edmund's to calculate their invoice price.

It's just a game. A sleazy one, but a game nonetheless.

    Don't let them win.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
I know exactly what you're going through as I too am in Orlando. All the Honda and Toyota dealers add that ridculous fee ranging from $299 to $699. Just say No, take it off. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't.

novice150, I feel your pain--I originally wanted to buy the Civic in central Florida before I moved to Ohio, but the fee game made me change my mind.

I have a quote from Immeke Honda in Dublin, Ohio (previously given a thumbs up in this discussion) for an EX manual for 17,821, which isn't Christmas in July, but it's the best I've got so far. The only thing that throws me off is the disclaimer: This price is valid for ten days and is subject to a vehicle in stock.

Umm. Nobody has this vehicle in stock, so I guess this quote is worthless. Do I get a "free upgrade", or a rain check? So I'm happy to read the accompanying BS about how they are a "fair" dealer and don't play games.

Has anyone had a good experience in the Columbus OH area? Roush Honda seems to have the largest inventory, but I can't visit, since I'm still in FLA, and I haven't heard from their internet manager.

    thanks!

One thing I'm finding out is that Hondas & Toyotas aren't in such hot demand in mid-western states as they are in southern and western states. I've been considering the Toyota FJ Cruiser and they're going for $2K+ over MSRP here in central Florida. Over in that forum, they're somewhere between invoice and MSRP in the midwest. For the price of a one-way ticket and gas, I could still save a couple grand.

I'm looking for Civic LX AT in NJ/NY area. The best quote that I've got so far is 18500 (OTD).

Anyone from NY/NJ who is currently looking - can I do better or should I jump at the offer.

Also all the quotes I got were on internet/phone. Do you guys think I can walk to dealership and negotiate a better price?

    Inputs / Recommendations welcome.
    Thanks.

I just got a Costco quote from the Seattle dealer (apparently Honda of Seattle is the only designated costco dealership- so I am assuming it was the same one) that was almost 18,000. You state that your quote was 17,200. If that is so then it seems that this so-called' membership pricing sheet varies from salesperson to salesperson - not what I expected from the costco program !
  • erc1erc1 Member Posts: 21
As for demand for Hondas in the midwest. . .based on what you see people driving, and greater dealer inventory, I agree 100% that the demand in Florida is greater. But according to Edmunds regional price adjustment, my zip is -$110 and Columbus is +$150. Hmmm.

I dropped into Tysons Corner Honda in VA today (6/10) and test drove the Civic. They were firm on wanting 900 above MSRP for the car. I couldnt believe they were serious. I told the salesman the TMV one edmunds indicated the car was going for about 20,600 instead of 21,300 MSRP. He said there was no way I could get the car for less than MSRP. The guy tried this high pressure sales style, really a joke, why isn't there a way to buy these cars directly from the manufacturer and cut out these absurd middlemen.
  • carmax1carmax1 Member Posts: 1
I have a question. Does the TMV price include taxes, tag and title??
  • postnobillspostnobills Member Posts: 43
They're part of the Rosenthal chain, right? Those guys are the most arrogant bunch I have ever run across. They played the same game with me a few years ago...actually starting yelling at me when I walked out on them after being told I could only buy a Civic at $500 over MSRP. One hour later I was in a Honda dealership in MD, bought the same car for $750 under MSRP. Plus, by law, MD dealers are capped at $99 on dealer prep fees, unlike VA dealers that try to extort/demand $350 or so for dealer prep. I have sworn i will never buy a new car on the VA side of the Potomac again.

I am looking to get the Civic EX Sedan AT and I was wondering what people in the Bay Area paid for the same vehicle. The best OTD quote I got from Gilroy Honda was $20133.56. Also does anyone know what is the current APR rate and terms from Honda Financing?

    Thanks all for our inputs.

    txn487 :confuse:
  • wco81wco81 Member Posts: 594
Best I'm getting is abouty 20,500 OTD.

Or 18,964 before tax and license.

Some of the dealerships in the South Bay are out of the EX sedans with Auto, although they're due to get more in a couple of weeks.

I offered 19,500 OTD at a few places and they said no way.

Gilroy might not be bad but I obviously would need to get it serviced locally so you wonder how the service dept. of local dealers who didn't make the sale would treat your car that you bought elsewhere.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
BUT it is probably better to list the price before tax and license, etc. The tax and license is only indirectly influenced by the dealer. Another profit padder is the so called "doc" fee. Essentially this is the money paid for the finance person who sits across from you filling out the contract and oh by the way uses most of the time (if you do not cut it short) to try to sell you other things (like the kitchen sink). This can range between 0 and 400 dollars. So as you can see you can use it as another negotiation point.
  • optikdcoptikdc Member Posts: 2
The experience was really bizarre, the salesman went on the test drive with me and half the time while I was driving he is on his cell phone grilling one of his co-workers about some customer who didnt come in to purchase an Accord, and how they can take their business elsewhere if they think they are getting that deal now...

I'll try emailing some MD dealers and try not to get discouraged by this unplesantness. These car companies should really try to get some control of these out of control dealers, I will just keep driving my 1997 Acura (which is running fine) if they want to treat me that way...there are plenty of choices for a consumer these days, if you feel leave the experience feeling that way it makes you want to avoid the whole experience.
  • wco81wco81 Member Posts: 594
Which is why you need to get the OTD prices from dealers, so there aren't these extra fees slipped in.

Yeah tax rates vary from state to state but these tax variances are probably wiped out by these fees they add these days.

Plus, prices vary between markets anyways so prices before tax and license are not necessarily more indicative of the kind of deal you can get than OTD prices.

    Hi,
Could someone tell me a decent honda dealer in DFW area, I am looking for a civic SI but all these dealers seem to be acting like they would do me a big favour by selling me an SI.
Also does anyone have an idea if you can get an SI for anything less the MSRP?
    thanks
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Let me put it another way, from your OTD price, I could not tell whether you paid 0 or even 400 dollars for the doc fee. Also (for example) you can be an Oregon state resident and buy a car in CA and NOT pay the TAXATION of CA of between 7.75% to 8.75%. Or you can be a CA state resident buying in NV and have essentially the same procedure going on, with of course different numbers. As you can probably agree, that would change the OTD price, now wouldn't it?
  • txn428txn428 Member Posts: 41
    Hi,

In my opinion, I would prefer to close the deal with OTD price. Since Edmunds.com already gave you the market price for car, so regardless of how much the fees are, you would feel assure that you buying it at the market value. :)
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
We were the Costco store for years. People would simply take my "Costco" price and go shop it.

I just love it now when someone brings me a Costco price to beat!
  • jmurman42jmurman42 Member Posts: 675
    optikdc,

Honda dealers like any car dealer is an independant business. If the manufacturers sold directly to the consumer you would not get some of the deals that you can with the present system.

I get a lot of people that come up from VA because of the doc fees...and because of the "ADM". Too bad for them and good for us. :)
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
Essentially you want to know the price you paid relative to the invoice price and TMV. Hard to know those, given the (OTD) out the door price. But if you don't want or need that kind of precision, that might work well for you.
  • nheninnhenin Member Posts: 8
I would agree with the others about VA Honda dealers. The out the door price works best when comparing VA to MD dealers, because the no-cap processing fee in VA encourages those dealers to charge $289-399 on average from what I've seen. MD law caps proc. fee; it's either $99 or $100.

But beware of any dealer that tries to make up the difference with an assortment of "Appearance Package" "Accessory Package," or any variation of this. DC area Honda dealers seem to favor this approach- I myself have not seen one in either state that didn't try to add these on.

Often these packages are $299 and up, but only include some basic things like wheel locks and pin striping.

One more thing to look out for is any so-called PDI fee. When I was at Fairfax Honda (also part of the Rosenthal chain), they tried to charge me PDI of $695.

They claimed it was the cost to the dealer of preparing the car for delivery. "Honda requires that we collect it," were his exact words.

I pointed out where it clearly states on the manufacturer sticker that the dealer is paid by Honda to prep the car. They then said the PDI was to "make the car look nice for you when you pick it up."

$695 for detailing your car??? Perhaps they have Evian running through their car wash...

i got one @ sussex honda in nj. $16300 for LX AUTO sedan. $16800 after the destination charge.

Just plain unprofessional and greedy. I was looking at a 2006 honda Civic Sedan today for $19K. I wanted to trade-in my 2005 Jeep Liberty with 30K miles still under warranty. I owe $18K and they offered me $11K. I walk over to their used car lot they have a 2003 for $18K, and a 2005 just like mine for $23,500. What a bunch of greedy jerks.
They really expected me to eat $7000 so they could make $12K in profit, sorry honda, guess you are not selling me a car this year, or ever. Gonna get a dodge caliber instead. Cheaper and same mpg.
  • wco81wco81 Member Posts: 594
That's how dealerships make money, from used car sales, not new car sales.

It's not Honda, it's the dealership trying to lowball you.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
" I walk over to their used car lot they have a 2003 for $18K, and a 2005 just like mine for $23,500. "

That says it all right there. They've got two other used vehicles like yours, so they don't want another one. Granted the $11K does seem unreasonably low, but just because they hurt your feelings, don't go off calling them "a bunch of greedy jerks".

And on top of that, you're going for an '06 Civic, still very much in high demand and one hot vehicle.

Why do you want to trade your Jeep so soon? You're way upside down, hang on to it.
  • cksycksy Member Posts: 3
you seem to know the deal with the Costco pricing.
does the price vary from day-to-day?
it seems it is kind of arbitrary - not fixed like costco implies when they say that 'they show you the membership sheet with the lowest price'

    btw,
although I would agree that the 06 civic is a great car, and has won a number of awards (which the dealers never fail to remind me about a half-dozen times), I don't see many of them on the road - in fact since I have been looking, I have seen only one in the last two weeks. But, lots of Mazda3s and GTIs. Do you think that it is mostly hype or am I missing something and these cars are flying off the lots?

    Hi,

I'm new to this board. I will be looking to buy a new Civic LX or EX at the end of August. I live in Brooklyn. I hope the prices come down a little by then. I need a second car to drive to work in LI. I have an 04 Santa Fe which is a great small SUV but only averages 20 mpg.

CKSY is right. The new Civics are nowhere to be found in the New York City area. I see maybe 1 every 2 days and I drive 60 miles per day.

I bought my 06 Civic EX sedan for 18500 excluding tax (7%) and tags ($120)(thankfully no outrageous "dealer prep" or "doc prep" fees as I see on other posts)..... I did have to go w/ another choice in color and car was found @ another dealer in another state.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
And those slow selling Jeep Libertys have probably been sitting on that lot for months!

What they are asking and what they would probably take to get rid of them would probably be a huge difference.

How much are you getting for your jeep liberty when you buy the dodge. Drove one as a rental car. Was not overly impressed with it. Seemed like it hesitated alot at highway speeds but then again it was the basic model.did you try selling the jeep privately.

This forum has been very usefull for me. I just purchased a 2006 Civi LX AT for $16968 includes destination. I went through Costco Auto buying and the whole deal was very much straight forward.
Even with lots of competition around the lowest quote I had was close to $17,300. Costco member price for NJ area is invoice + $400. I hope I made the right choice in closing the deal at costco price. and I love the car.

Have a internet price of $17,267 here in South Florida. Saw an ad from last Sundays paper of $1060 off MSRP. E-mailed my salesman & asked if he'd let me use the ad for a price of $17,000. If he agrees & they give me close to what KBB values my trade at, then I'll probaly do it in the next 3 days before I go back to work. All that would be left would be T,T&L.
On another note, rented an Impala LTZ this past week in New England and eventhough the gas mileage was pretty sucky, what a cool car. It drove effortlessly with available power when needed without that jerkiness of downshifting. The XM radio was also awesome. Congrats to Chevy for hitting a solid triple with this car. A little more work, & this car could be a homer...easily!!!

"I'll try emailing some MD dealers and try not to get discouraged by this unplesantness. "

I posted way back in Nov/Dec 2005 that I bought an '06 Civic EX sedan for $18900 OTD. I did all of my negotiation via email and got the best quote from Criswell Honda in MD (Gaithersburg or Germantown - I live in Northern VA and I can never remember which town Criswell is in.) Edit: This is an automatic transmission. And it was 8 months ago, so you may be able to get a better price now - but it was a good price at the time, according to posts here. :-)

The worst quotes I received were from VA dealerships.

Paid $17,000 this afternoon for the car in Galaxy Gray. Saw the Atomic Blue & the Light Brown cars also but liked the Galaxy Gray the best. Nice gray interior also. Car had 4.2 miles on the odometer. Will pick up the car on Monday afternoon, as the alignment was off and they need to put the stripes, wheel well mouldings & door edge guards on this baby. Threw in some services...5k, 10k & 15k to make me come down a bit on the trade. They applied some light pressure and as I told them I don't need the car, they backed off real quickly. Everything was within my target area on what I would spend, so both sides feel good about the deal. And no, I won't ask did I do good or not...the papers are signed and I'm happy. Was there some money left on the table...probaly, but sometimes it's just not worth all the stress to get every last dime.

Happy in South Florida, I remain,

Yes, $11K profit, $7K under KBB, they deserve to be called a bunch of greedy jerks.

No, they did not hurt my feelings, they lost a sale.

We decided to get a 2006 Civic LX MT Atomic Blue. We can wait. Ideally, we would like to get the car late August or early September, but can buy it sooner or later if that means saving $200+.

Most dealers around Denver, CO do not have the car, happy to order it for us, but cannot guarantee that the quoted price ($16,900 so far) will not go up by the time the car is delivered. They admit the price might go down as well.

My understanding is that the arrival of 2007 Civics may lower the prices of 2006 models, but it may be difficult to buy the exact 2006 car we want by then, because Honda will stop making them.

Can we use our flexibility to lower the price? When should we order?

    Thank you.
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
I almost bought the exact same car with the auto tranny yesterday...but decided on the Galaxy Gray instead. Both very nice colors and the gray interior is much nicer than the ivory in my opinion. I was lucky that both cars came in yesterday morning on their latest shipment from Honda. Mine was made in the Ohio plant I presume as it has a "1" at the beginning of the vin #.
About the price, I doubt the price will go down by much...this car doesn't sit on the lots very long according to my salesman. Isell would be a good person to ask about this. South Florida is a hot car market, probaly similar to SoCal & I see many Civics on the roads.
Good luck in whatever you do. I'm happy with my deal and this being my 1st Honda, I'm looking forward to many years of happy motoring!

We nearly purchased a Subaru becasue of rebates & discounts offered in liew of the Civic, just could not get myself to pay MSRP or more for the Civic. Checked with MANY area dealers.

Only two dealers willing to discount (slightly) were Fisher Honda in Boulder and Canyon Honda in Glenwood Spgs (Glenwood Automotive Group on internet). Had previously conversed with two metro area dealers & in the few weeks we waited their prices went up to at or above MSRP due to demand, cant blame them but wow! Wanted Atomic Blue or possibly the gray. Fishher & Canyon were great, Canyon wound up getting one in sooner, actually had two EX sedans on lot a gray, & a black, both super sharp.

Purchased a Galaxy Gray EX 4 Dr Auto non navi, was a good experience, low key. They insisted on the $599 doc fee and $179 VTR?? fee, but even with those fees came in under MSRP & were great guys to deal with. Got what we wanted, a so happy with the Civic, the car is way better than our expectations.

Drove up to Glenwood in my Mother's 05 Civic EX, what a difference in ride, power, room, everything on the 06 appears better. The 06 is WORTH the money, that is why they are BRINGING the money to the dealer!!! What a car.

I got it in ny area. Basically the car price before ttl was 16.8 k.

This price was quoted to me by 3 dealers in NY/NJ area, but got this price at a fourth one which was closer to home. I think i could have done better if i did not have the time constraint. At least I think 18.2k OTD was possible, but I simply did not have bandwidth of time to do protracted negotiations.

I want a Civic LX coupe automatic. As I drive 300+ miles a week, I must have a car with good mileage. My question:Will there be good deals for the 4th of July or will the deals be better at the end of this month (June)or will I get the best deal right before the 2007's roll in Oct./Nov.? Or are these the questions of the century and impossible to answer? ;)
